Programming the Finite Element Method
ASIN: 0471863335 |
Book Description
Providing an easy introduction to the boundary element method, this book is ideal for any reader wishing to work in this field or use this method for the solution of engineering problems. From the beginning, the emphasis is on the implementation of the method into computer programs which can be used to solve real problems. The book covers two-andthree-dimensional linear and non-linear analysis in potential flow (heat flow and seepage) and static elasticity. Several computer programs are listed in the book and may be downloaded free of charge via the Internet. They include programs and subroutines for:
* 2-D analysis of potential problems using the Trefftz method
* 2-D and 3-D linear analysis of potential and static elasticity problems using isoparametric elements (single and multiple regions)
* implementation of non-linear problems
* coupling to finite elements
The programs (written in FORTRAN 90) are well documented, and can be employed by the user to gain experience with the method through the solution of small test examples. Furthermore, readers may use them as a starting point for developing their own boundary element package. In addition, exercises are included in most chapters involving the use of the programs with answers given in an Appendix, and a number of interesting industrial applications in the areas of mechanical, civil and geotechnical engineering are presented.

Good for student and practitioner.......2001-06-27
I am a grduate student. My specific research area is BEM. and I programmed my own c++ code.
If I could get this book earlier, I could have saved a lot of time. By reading this book, reader can find not only detailed information for coding but also clear understanding about BEM.
The impressive points to me are 1) working 2D/3D potential and stress solvable code-there is multi-region version too, excellent explaining about 2)Corner problem, 3)assembly procedure (especially for multi-region problem), 4) programming frieldly math notations, 5) good logical flow of chapters.
The only problem I found is few mistypings. But, it does not prevent me to understand the material.
For engineers in industry, I think they can use the code to solve engineering problem with some modification if they don't have expensive commercial FE package, or use the code to solve linear problems quickly, etc.
As a result, Prof. Beer achieved his goal of writing this book and I hope this book can help to expand the BEM users.
Book Description
A thorough yet understandable introduction to the boundary element method, an attractive alternative to the finite element method, is presented. The unique feature of the book is that it not only explains the theory but also the implementation of the theory into computer code. The code in FORTRAN 95 can be downloaded free of charge. The issue of efficiently using parallel processing hardware in order to considerably speed up the computations for large Systems is also addressed. The applications range form problems of heat and fluid flow to static and dynamic elasto-plastic problems in continuum mechanics. After each chapter several exercises are shown and this makes it suitable as a teaching material in a class on the BEM. Several applications of the method to industrial problems are included, that show the advantage over other methods.

Rattigan's again - - -.......2007-04-08
Never any secret about where he grew up. Have read most of his work, and "Snow In August" remains my favorite. The references to Bird, Miles and Minton's (yeah, I'd take the A-Train up to Harlem and would be the only white face for miles, strolling to see Tony Scott, Percy, Klook, Baby Washington -- and Carman MacRae tried to get me to actually like Soul Food -- never did, but she was a super lady!)---(also flunked a tryout with the Dodgers at Ebbets Field in '52, but that doesn't matter; I know his haunts, well) -- and, although his experiences were different, there were sooooo many familiar feelings. Talks my language. Good book. Not great, but good.
Good story, but anachronisms abound.......2005-02-02
I liked Pete Hamill's "Loving Women" and found most of his characters real and sympathetic. Michael Devlin, the young sailor growing up after boot camp at his first duty station is a character with whom any of us who served in the military can identify. The characters at the Navy base are familiar and could have been found on any military base in any branch of the service.
The love affair with Eden Santana is absorbing. The erotic passages are well done - you can almost taste and smell the sex.
However, it is a little jarring when he gets some of the historical details wrong. Though the novel was set in 1953, he went on about the Dodgers moving to Los Angeles which didn't happen until April of 1958; wrote about James Dean and his famous red jacket from "Rebel Without a Cause" which was released in 1955.
These kinds of sloppy writing mistakes jar a reader out of his suspension of disbelief for a moment or two and make what otherwise would be a wonderful historical novel into just a pretty good one.
Still a good read - but it could have been a great read.
Deserves to be reprinted.......1999-02-08
I found this book in a used book shop, and being a fan of Hamill's, I bought it. Somewhat semi-autobiographical, the book follows a Brooklyn youth into his induction into the Navy and life at its most raw. The story thrusts one suprise twist on top of another, one exciting episode is immediately replaced by one even more thrilling. And this may be the most erotic book I have ever read. Not quite pornographic, the scenes of lust between two lovers are very descriptive and will stick with the reader for some time. I have read thousands of books, and this has to be in my top ten. Look for it, the search will be highly rewarding.
Book Description
Dishwasher is Pete Jordan's amusing memoir of his itinerant dishwashing extravaganza. "For 12 years, I was the most prolific dishlicker of them all. From 1989 – 2001, I dished my way around the country, unwittingly searching for direction. From a bagel joint in New Mexico to a Mexican joint in Brooklyn; from a dinner train in Rhode Island to the Lawrence Welk Resort in Branson, MO; from an upper–crust ladies' club to a crusty hippie commune – I washed the nation's dishes," he explains.
Part adventure, part self–parody, and part self–discovery, it reveals how he transformed into "Dishwasher Pete" – the ultimate professional dish dog, unlikely folk hero, writer, and publisher of his own cult 'zine – and his struggles to find love, stability, and yes, the elusive happy–ever–after.

Couldn't put this down!.......2007-09-19
I really like stories of people's jobs, and no one I've ever read about has had more jobs then Disherwasher Pete. The author of the long-run cult favorite zine "Dishwasher" has put out this great book by the same name. Pete decided at a very long age when he had a hard time figuring out what he wanted to do for his life, that he liked to travel and see the country, and that dishwashing was the way to do it. He put up a goal of going to all 50 states to wash dishes. This is his autobiography of those journeys. And as a former dishwasher, I love this even more.
It's one of those books you can't put down because it's so wild. He talks about his time aboard oil rigs, loads of evil, sick, and twisted bosses, grungy work conditions, the ability to quit a job that screws with him in any possible way (and believe me, he takes advantage of that, fulfilling the impulse of every worker in America.) Along the way, as he puts out his zine, he develops a reputation as a "Master Dishwasher" and treats the reader to the underground world of dishwashing, of sorts, like eating off of the bus tray buffet (sometimes I never got enough of when I was working as a pearl diver). He ends up on David Letterman (actually, just a friend of his impersonating him), has tons of near dates, and tells about the great history of dishwasher unions and the loyalty they have (to the exclusion of the servers and the cooks.) He doesn't spare the reader of descriptions of nasty kitchens full of roaches and rodents, and drinking on the job to pass it by.
Pete really lives a lot of people's dreams, and refuses to let it end until he's at the age of 35, having been to every state in the union and seen a lot more than most people do in their whole lives. He's got such a sense of humor that's so self-depricating but at the same time proud that he doesn't let anyone tell him how to be. Everywhere from racist Louisiana resteraunt owners to hippy communes who try to sucker him into doing more than he wants, Pete always seems to end up on top. He lives dollar to dollar and makes every buck count in his travels, but always confident he can find another job, because once you washed one dish, you can wash any dish.
"On the road" with a narcissist.......2007-08-21
Kerouac and Bukowski? Not even close, August 21, 2007
I picked up this book for a few reasons- first, I liked the idea. Graduating from college, I too had the urge to travel the U.S. and I always thought I could work in restaurants if need be.
Secondly, another writer refers to Pete as "kerouac"like and his tale akin to "On The Road". Pete himself mentions Charles Bukowski many many times in his book.
The difference is this- both Kerouac and Bukowski, while loafers and alcoholics in their own right, saw the beauty in the simple pleasures and the world around them. THeir works focused on their adventures, but also illuminated the people that surrounded them.
Bukowski in particular, with Post Office, showed a world of a very monotonous, meandering job and made it interesting because of his writing and the characters he met.
Pete spends chapter after chapter bitching about why people who won't just leave him alone and let him read while on the clock. He complains ad nauseum about the people who just don't "get it". Well, sign me up as one of those Pete.
I have a few friends that continue in their 30's to be mooches, sleeping on couches and doing as little work as possible and while I love these guys dearly, I have no interest in reading about them.
I was expecting a book about traveling across America, about the people you meet and the communities you find. I was expecting a narrator whose wanderlust and spirit I could identify with and admire.
Instead, I got a bitter and lazy version of Jack Black's character in High Fidelity, constantly belittling and berating people who "just don't get it".
It is, in the end, a mean book. And this coming from a guy who worked my fair share of dishwashing jobs to put myself through college.
He spends half of the chapters berating people for their treatment of dishwashers and arguing against the stereotypes leveled against "pearl divers"
He spends the other half living up to those stereotypes to nauseating levels.
and I'm kind of sad I supported the book with my hard earned money.
Who'd Have Thought?.......2007-07-09
"Dishwasher" has a take that few of us would have thought of, a travel narrative about washing dishes around the country. The proliferation of travel tales has resulted in many approaches but this has to be a first.
Pete Jordan comes across as a decent fellow with absolutely no ambition. Some would call him the ultimate slacker but at least he had the gumption to write and publish this book. It took a while for me to warm up to him, however. His tales of outright theft from the people he works for, as well as drinking himself into oblivion, lack of respect for anyone other than fellow dishwashers and lack of empathy for the hard-up restaurateurs who employ him make the reader wonder, why should I like this guy? Scarfing food from dirty plates (the "bus tray buffet") and sponging whenever and wherever he can go a long way toward testing the public's natural willingness to give an author the benefit of the doubt, especially when shelling out hard-earned cash.
Eventually, however, Jordan grew on me. I think my opinion turned about the time he began to research the early days of the American labor movement and discovered that quite a few of the rabble-rousers were abused dishwashers. This is a tale of what it's like behind the scenes, in the back of restaurants and cafes where the "dirty work" gets done. Pete's rule insisting that he have the freedom to walk out on any job, whenever the mood strikes him, is the dream of many an overworked, disrespected service industry grunt. While I often felt sorry for the employers who trusted him enough to give him a chance (as he drank their beer and ate their food when they weren't looking), the other side of the coin is that too many business owners still don't get it. To attract and keep good people, you treat them with respect, pay a decent wage and don't take advantage of them. Quite a few examples in "Dishwasher" illustrate how the "lowly" position is easily filled so keeping a guy on his feet for twelve or fifteen hours, late into the night, is common.
A few times I wanted Jordan to get out of bed and go to work when the time for his shift rolled around. That's not Pete. If he felt like it he went in. If not, he rolled over and went back to sleep. Consequently, the guy looking for respect perpetuated the attitude against dishwashers and other kitchen workers by not showing up or walking out in the middle of a shift. God knows why his wife persistently pursued him but, thankfully for the author, she did. Evidently he's now happily married (and a father), living in Amsterdam.
This somewhat strange little tale is mostly entertaining but does get a little redundant. How many stories about washing dishes can one relate and keep them interesting? Fortunately, Jordan manages to maintain that standard through most of the book. Life in a brutally capitalist society like America can be rough. Here's a picture of what it's like when you don't have a place to live, transportation or a solid, stellar resume'.
Simply Amazing.......2007-07-05
This book had me enthralled from the beginning! Many people speak of money providing freedom, but this book is a perfect example of true freedom and a man living life on his terms.
While reading it, my wife would have to remind me several times a day that she did not care what Pete was up to and that I could shut up. :)
Way worth it.
Fun read.......2007-07-02
I found this book to be a fun read. I was drawn into the journey and very much enjoyed the humor throughout the storytelling. I don't think anyone has to be a fan of any particular genre to like this book. It went by quick, and I was kind of wanting a little more when it ended.

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Experience.......2007-09-20
In "I Sent a Letter to My Love," story & score combine to make certain that the two CDs in this package will return many times to your CD player. Melissa Manchester succeeds here in the most difficult of song writing tasks, creating melodies that are at once complex and catchy, and the story they help tell is similarly engaging (the book here was adapted by Jeffrey Sweet from a Bernice Ruben novel by the same name). Three main characters, Amy, Stan, and Gwen, follow different paths with the same ache for love; yet this is really Amy's story. In her most particularly, we see our needs and wounds, our moments of blindness and of insight. With her we sympathize as we witness again love's ability to draw and repel, to afflict and to redeem.
These conventional, though ever-fresh, themes are explored in a somewhat unconventional plot. We meet Amy (played here by Melissa Manchester) in Maine in 1955. She has never married and has given her life to caring for her brother, Stan (Stephen Bogardus), a man crippled by childhood polio. The familiar and settled ways of their lives are altered one summer after Amy impulsively decides to place a "Lady Seeks Gentleman" correspondence ad to which Stan alone--unaware--replies. This conflict and contest unfolds as the sister and brother rent a cottage they own near their home to Gwen (Megan Mullally), a woman finding herself on her own for the first time and uncertain about her place in the world.
Ms. Manchester, Mr. Bogardus, and Ms. Mullally deliver strong, impassioned, and witty performances, supported here by the equally-impressive work of Megan Fay and Paul Anthony Stewart. The singing in this recording--which was produced by L.A. Theater Works and broadcast on NPR--is spectacular. All of the colors of Ms. Manchester's deservedly-celebrated voice are present amid Mr. Bogardus' soaring tenor and Ms. Mullally's very-satisfying mix. Though not yet a widely produced work, this recording makes it clear that "I Sent A Letter to My Love" deserves a prominent place in the musical theater repertoire.

An all in one handy medical reference guide!.......2005-03-12
As unbelievable as it may sound, I'm in my fifties--and still doing well (at least in my opinion) . . . yet that said, I sometimes find myself with questions about my health and in need of answers, I seek them out via the Internet, friends, doctors, etc.
So I was delighted to come across FACING YOUR FIFTIES by Dr. Gordon Ehlers and Jeff Miller . . . it is much of the information that I've been seeking--all in one handy reference
guide that is written with a minimum of medical jargon.
I recommend it not only for any guy in the 40-60 age range, in addition to their wives or significant others . . . you'll of course find information on cancer and heart disease, in addition to some unexpected though most helpful advice on how to pick shoes . . . I particularly liked these two suggestions:
* Try on shoes at the end of the day, when your feet are
the largest; and
* Uncomfortable shoes in the store will stay that way, even
with "breaking in."
There were many other useful tidbits; among them:
For prevention, two good examples of stacking the odds in your favor are: (1) taking eighty-one milligrams of aspirin (a "baby" aspirin) daily; and (2) taking 400 IU (international units) of vitamin E daily. How likely is it that taking aspirin will cause a problem for most people? Not very. How likely is it that taking vitamin E will cause a problem for anyone? Not likely. But both help to significantly reduce the risk of a fifties male suffering a heart attack or stroke. In these two cases, the benefits far outweigh the effort and affects of taking the pills.
If the alarm clock is waking you from a deep sleep, and you're overly tired in the early afternoon, and you can't shake that midday fatigue, then you need to adjust your schedule to create a better sleep pattern. Working in fifteen or twenty-minute increments, start by giving
yourself one more increment of sleep. Try it for a week or so. If this doesn't create the desired results, add another increment and then another until you find the optimum amount of sleep you need. Once you determine that, you can easily figure out when you need to go
to bed to obtain that amount of sleep-and still get to work on time.
Finally, one last piece of advice--maybe the best piece of advice in this entire book. Once you've had a physical assessment, once you've taken the preventive exams and tests, once you've implemented a sound, life-long program of good eating, exercise, and periodic physician visits, then remember: Don't obsess about your health Simply live your life to the fullest.
SO MEN YOU HAVE REACHED THE" BIG FIVE O!".......2003-12-19
Many of us men who have reached our fifties or about to attain the big "five O" have been told that it is all- downhill from here on end!
How often do we begin reading our morning newspaper by first turning to the obituaries? As heart disease and cancer are the principal killers of the male species when they attain their fifties, we cringe at the thought of perhaps spotting the name of one of our buddies, who may have met his maker.
How about those aching joints, bladder problems, hair loss, sleeplessness, upset stomachs, sexual dysfunctions, knee pains, lower back pains, shoulder pains and a number of other aches and pains in places we never knew existed.
Family and sports medicine physician Gordon Ehlers has teamed up with magazine editor, writer and author, Jeff Miller, to provide men reaching their fifties with a good overview guide as to what to expect when reaching this milestone and how to cope with many of the health - problems.
Though Facing Your Fifties: A Man's Reference Guide to Mid-Life Health is probably the first medical reference book to address the health concerns of this particular age group, it could have easily been called A Man's Reference Guide to Health.
No matter what your age may be, the advice, recommendations and explanations will prove to be invaluable.
Focusing on three principal watch- words, "awareness, early-warning testing and preventive actions," readers are counseled that they must take a pro-active attitude when it comes to their health.
The authors make it very clear that the book is neither an encyclopedia nor a replacement for health service providers, but rather a first-consult book providing a general understanding and awareness of health matters as it affects males.
Divided into eight distinct sections, the authors explore such topics as blood sugar level, prostate examinations, exercise, diet, weight problems, musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular and respiratory networks, digestive and urinary tracts, sexual issues, mental state and changing patterns, cancer, becoming proactive, diet and smoking.
In addition, the mixture of true life stories and sidebars replying to common queries such as can an aspirin a day really help, how a treadmill test really works, understanding inflammation, makes for a very compelling read.
The book's strongest points are the authors' determination to present information in a readable, down to earth and authoritative format. Readers with a low tolerance for medical jargon will find this book a pleasant change from many of the primers dealing with male health issues. However, as the epilogue states: "don't obsess about your health. Simply live your life to the fullest."

A Wealth of Information!.......2002-09-29
This book is fantastic! It is full of information that is really helpful to wives, who have husbands that do not like to talk about their health! It covers a broad range of topics from heart disease, blood pressure, prostate, sexual issues and male menopause! My husband has started reading it now and is learning all kinds of useful information! This was a lucky find! Very well written!
What took so long?.......2002-04-26
Finally, a book written for men doing just what the title says;"Facing the Fifties" written by a couple of guys who obviously don't subscribe to the "if you have fabulous abs everything must be just fine" school of health. Incredible it took this long for someone to realize with all us "boomers" out there that the need for this kind of book was huge. I like how straight forward, simple and easy this book is. No BS, just clear information and a nice sense of humor about it as well. This was clearly written by men who understand what we're up against physically and emotionally and I recommend it to anyone in the neighborhood of their fifties.

DON'T MISS THIS BOOK.......2004-11-12
The introduction by A. S. Byatt is fantastic, but the translation is one of the finest of Goethe I've ever read. The translator's intro is particularly informative. I cannot recommend this book enough. It's treatment of age and youth (and it's extraordinary langauge, well communicated in the translation) is without parallel. In this Christmas season, I can't think of a book more fitting for those older (and younger) people in our lives than this excellent book.
In the last few months I've read Proust, Hegel, Freud, Dante, and Boccaccio, but there is no book I have loved more than this one. Buy it now.

Book Description
The man came out of the blue. He was a Filipino-American who visited our village in Southern Philippines, a soldier in the US Army who fought the Japanese in Leytejust before the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Forces in the Philippines. He was a former resident of the village who left for America when he was on his early teens. He came to visit but left an indelible mark on the young people's mind about America, the land of opportunity; America, the melting pot of all nations; America, the beautiful. This book recounts the author's fifty odd years adventure in America. It tells of the stark reality of life among the poor; the uncertainty of life among the laboring class; the hardship of stoop labor, earning "from the sweat of thy brow." In contrast to this background, the author tells of the life of a professional in America. This book also tells the stories about the American people, the nature of college life; the lifestyle of the rich, the coeds, the fraternity boys. The author recounts briefly some romantic episodes of a young man in a strange country and people. The author was caught in a maelstrom of social, economic and cultural upheavals in America, including global conflicts.
