Book Description
Nonlinear Finite Elements for Continua and Structures Ted Belytschko, Wing Kam Liu, Brian Moran Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois This book provides a comprehensive description of the major methodologies of nonlinear finite element analysis for solid mechanics, as applied to continua and structures. Treatment of the subject is integrated in such a way that the reader can gain an understanding of the fundamental methods, a feeling for the comparative usefulness of different approaches and an appreciation of the difficulties inherent in nonlinear analysis. In-depth coverage of the following is given:
* Lagrangian and arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian treatments of continua
* many of the material laws used in today's software and research
* solution methods, including explicit and implicit time integration methods and methods for equilibrium problems
* basic concepts such as stability and smoothness, and techniques such as linearization and regularization
* methods for shells and structures
* contact-impact problems
* element technology, including multi-field elements
Ideal for self-study, no other book provides such a comprehensive description of nonlinear finite element analysis for solid mechanics. This is an invaluable reference not only for final year undergraduates, postgraduates, academics and engineers working on sophisticated finite element software and in the field of solid mechanics, but also for all users of nonlinear finite element programs.

Simply the best there is.......2006-06-16
This book is simply the best nonlinear FEA book out there. While most other books stop at the Total and Updated Legrangian formulations, this book goes way beyond that and teaches you some really advanced FEA techniques. The treatment of material is thourough and meticulous. Unlike what some other reviewers have said, this book is NOT a bunch of research papers thrown together, but is very well organized with consistent notation and timely explanations. This book is ideal for self study as well as reference for scientists and engineers. However, watch out for some typos that may throw you off-track. This is the only complaint I have about the book.
A good reference, but need further revision.......2004-10-15
The approach taken by this book is neither too mathematical, which makes the subject untractable, nor too engineering-lized, which missed out important insights. I am an engineer with a master degree in mechanical engineering. I found this book very readable, given enough coffine and a good mood. The subjects covered are self-contained.
However this book needs further improvement to be called classic. First, contact-impact chapter is palely presented. LS-DYNA theory manual provides a more complete description on this subject. Secondly, typos need to be reduced. Thirdly, the language is somewhat boring. Fourthly, I would like to see a Latex-ized version of this book.
The new gold standard.......2004-06-02
This has got to be the best book out there now on how to construct nonlinear FE. For me, the book was worth it even if just for the lucent review of nonlinear continuum mechanics.
Distinguished.......2003-04-15
By systematic way of intuition, the authors successfully grasp the philosophy of nonlinear phenomena. The methods of explanation in TL, UL, and ALE are obviously pronounced. If the books of Prof. Zienkiewicz and Prof.Taylor, Prof.Bathe are treasures of FEM, this book is worth in that place.
Outstanding!.......2002-11-26
Though I had been somehow prepared by the positive comments of the other reviewers before buying this book, I must admit that I was impressed from the very beginning of study. Non linear FE is a "hard" subject, however the authors proceed in the most systematic and comprehensive way, addressing the most important aspects of non linear fem analysis in a single volume. The book contains everything you need from the field of Continuum Mechanics and is ideal for self - study. Valuable references, handy summary boxes and exercises at the end of each chapter are included.
Book Description
Built in Austria, Canada, Italy, Mexico, Holland, the Antilles, Venezuela, and the U.S., Hauer's architectural walls and screens caused a stir when they were erected in the 1950s, but have since been lost in time. This book gathers stunning photographs of these works, many of them now destroyed or no longer accessible. Erwin Hauer continues his work as a sculptor and is Professor emeritus at the Yale University School of Art.

this book is done very nicely and provides me with aesthetic and informative material !!
Erwin Hauer: Continua--Architectural Screens and Walls.......2005-08-04
Excellent b+w illustrations and clear layout. Very informative and inspiring works.
The logic of form.......2004-07-09
The Greeks used the word LOGOS to refer to reasonable speech, articulated reasoning expressed in words. Our modern word LOGIC derives from this root. Erwin Hauer has, over the many years of his career as a working artist, elaborated a visible LOGOS, a logos not of words but of forms. These forms were initially realized to serve a commercial, architectural purpose -- they were built as walls or screens -- but the logic they embody will delight, or thrill, any observer who pays close attention to the display they present. One comes to suspect that this logic, and not just the commercial commision that occasioned them, is the driving force behind Hauer's investigation.
The book is designed and produced with an eye towards clarity and precision, making it totally in sympathy with the vision it presents. Anyone who enjoys seeing an idea recognized, seized, and elaborated with intense concentration will enjoy this book.
Book Description
This two-part text supplies a lucid, self-contained account of classical mechanics and provides a natural framework for introducing advanced mathematical concepts in physics. Topics include Lagrangian dynamics, Hamiltonian dynamics, fluids and sound and surface waves, more. 165 figures. 2 tables. 1980 edition.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect!.......2006-11-11
This book covers all the main topics that a mechanics course at the advance undergraduate or graduate level should have and more. It starts with a first chapter on Basic Principles where the authors do a general review about Newtonian mechanics, that is, Newton's laws, angular momentum, energy, conservation laws, center of mass motion, two body motion with a central potential and scattering. Then follows a chapter on Accelerated Coordinate Systems where you encounter things like the Corioly acceleration and centrifugal forces. Chapter three is a delight, it is about Lagrangian Dynamics where you learn a much powerfull formalism than newton's equations to solve problems using the Lagrangian function, learning about virtual displacements and generalized coordinates (also D'Alambert and Hamilton's principle). Chapter four is about Small Oscillations, it is very important since here you learn to work with many-particle systems that are use a lot in condense matter physics, the very well known normal coordinates are here introduced. Chapter five is about Rigid Bodies, chapter six is about Hamiltonian Dynamics, this chapter connects very well with chapter three illustrating yet another method to solve mechanics problems by defining canonically momentas for every generalized coordinates and then finding a set of first orders differential equations involving the hamiltonian (as opposed to chapter three where either D'Alambert or Hamilton principle lead to a system of second order differential equations) The hamiltonian is defined as a Legendre transformation of the Lagrangian function, also the Poisson brackets are introduced here and it is even explained how to do the transition between classical and quantum mechanics and also canonical transformations are introduced. This first six chapters make purchasing this book worthwhile but as if this weren't enough there are still another seven chapters more! I will just write their names: 7-Strings, 8-Membranes, 9-Sound waves in fluids, 10-Surface waves on fluids, 11- Heat Conduction, 12-Viscous Fluids and 13-Elastic continua. It also brings 5 appendices. This book is very well written and I always come back to it when I have to remember some mechanics formula or issue to re-study, I say that this book and Goldstein are the best books you can get on classical mechanics.
Book Description
In their prior Dover book, Theoretical Mechanics of Particles and Continua, the authors provided a self-contained account of classical mechanics. This supplement and update offers a bridge to contemporary mechanics. The original book's focus on continuum mechanics forms the basis for this discussion of nonlinear continuous systems. 2006 edition.
Book Description
This text extends applications of the finite element method from linear problems in elastic structures to a broad class of practical, nonlinear problems in continuum mechanics. Its general and unified treatment of theory and applications emphasizes nonlinear problems in finite elasticity, viscoelasticity, heat conduction, and thermoviscoelasticity. 1972 edition.

Schaum's Outline of Tensor Calculus (Schaum's)
ASIN: 3540360468 |
Book Description
There is a large gap between the engineering course in tensor algebra on the one hand and the treatment of linear transformations within classical linear algebra on the other hand. The aim of the book is to bridge this gap by means of the consequent and fundamental exposition. The book is addressed primarily to engineering students with some initial knowledge of matrix algebra. Thereby the mathematical formalism is applied as far as it is absolutely necessary. Numerous exercises provided in the book are accompanied by solutions enabling an autonomous study. The last chapters of the book deal with modern developments in the theory of isotropic an anisotropic tensor functions and their applications to continuum mechanics and might therefore be of high interest for PhD-students and scientists working in this area.
In the last decades, the absolute notation for tensors has become widely accepted and is now a current state of the art for publications in solid and structural mechanics. This is opposed to a majority of books on tensor calculus referring to index notation. The latter one complicates the understanding of the matter especially for readers with initial knowledge. Thus, this book aims at being a modern textbook on tensor calculus for engineers in line with the contemporary way of scientific publications.

Book Description
The book derives the equations of electrostatics, magnetostatics and electromagnetics in material continua from the fundamental statements of Coulomb, Ampére, Faraday and Maxwell in a careful systematic way. The book is intended to provide graduate students in mechanics and applied mathematics, as well as faculty and appropriate research workers, with an understanding of electromagnetism and prepare them for studies on the interaction of the electric and magnetic fields with deformable solid continua. Unusually careful attention is given to the description of the stored electric and magnetic energies and the prescription for the body force exerted by the fields on the material continuum. Much of the approach to the development of the equations is original and more systematic and convincing than others.

A Nice Little Book.......2001-06-11
I had the pleasure of taking courses from the author of this book for several semesters. I once asked him about the book, to which he replied, "It's a nice little book, isn't it?"
Indeed it is. The author is a specialist in non-linear continuum mechanics and, I believe, assembled the contents of this book as a necessary prerequisite to understanding his own research. The result is an eminently readable 150 page development of Maxwell's equations for regions occupied by continuous distributions of matter. The physical assumptions (Coulomb's law, Ampere's law, etc.) are kept to an absolute minimum, and the constitutive assumptions used to arrive at linearized field theories are made explicit. After reading this book, one cannot help but to cringe at the usual treatments of electromagnetic material properties (dielectric "constant", magnetic permeability, etc.). Towards the end of the book, there appears a brute force calculation demonstrating the Lorentz invariance of Maxwell's equations. I have yet to see this done elsewhere. Other rare treats include a discussion of the Lorentz local field, which must be excluded from the continuum description in order to arrive at a consistent field theory.
The notation employed throughout is a combination of Gibbs vector analysis and the standard "indicial notation" for cartesian tensors. Some prior exposure to these subjects is required. This book was my first true exposure to electromagnetism, and I have had no regrets since.
