    Book Description

Aimed at advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students, this book provides a first taste of the theory of Lie groups as an appetiser for a more substantial further course. Lie theoretic ideas lie at the heart of much of standard undergraduate linear algebra and exposure to them can inform or motivate the study of the latter.
The main focus is on matrix groups, i.e., closed subgroups of real and complex general linear groups. The first part studies examples and describes the classical families of simply connected compact groups. The second part introduces the idea of a lie group and studies the associated notion of a homogeneous space using orbits of smooth actions.
Throughout, the emphasis is on providing an approach that is accessible to readers equipped with a standard undergraduate toolkit of algebra and analysis. Although the formal prerequisites are kept as low level as possible, the subject matter is sophisticated and contains many of the key themes of the fully developed theory, preparing students for a more standard and abstract course in Lie theory and differential geometry.

    Book Description

Matrix analytic methods are popular as modeling tools because they give one the ability to construct and analyze a wide class of queuing models in a unified and algorithmically tractable way. The authors present the basic mathematical ideas and algorithms of the matrix analytic theory in a readable, up-to-date, and comprehensive manner. In the current literature, a mixed bag of techniques is used-some probabilistic, some from linear algebra, and some from transform methods. Here, many new proofs that emphasize the unity of the matrix analytic approach are included.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2002-08-02

Matrix Analytic Methods (MAM) are great modeling tools that can analyze a variety of stochastic systems in a unified way and in an algorithmically tractable manner. This book is one of the greatest that have been published on queueing theory and stochastic modeling.
    This book covers
    1. Examples of quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) processes.
    2. Phase-type distributions
    3. Stationary and non-stationary QBDs
    4. Algorithms (from probabilistic reasoning)
    5. And many others.
I used this book as a text for my graduate students and it was a real pleasure. Throughout the books, readers will see MAM as an art of modeling and analysis of stochastic systems, not the pile of techniques.
This book is aiming at readers in queueing theory, computer science, OR/MS, statistics, mathematics, and many other related disciplines. This book also serves as the source of bibliography not otherwise easily available.

    Book Description

The textbook contains the records of a two-semester course on queueing theory, including an introduction to matrix-analytic methods. The course is directed to last year undergraduate and first year graduate students of applied probability and computer science, who have already completed an introduction to probability theory. Its purpose is to present material that is close enough to concrete queueing models and their applications, while providing a sound mathematical foundation for their analysis. A prominent part of the book will be devoted to matrix-analytic methods. This is a collection of approaches which extend the applicability of Markov renewal methods to queueing theory by introducing a finite number of auxiliary states. For the embedded Markov chains this leads to transition matrices in block form resembling the structure of classical models. Matrix-analytic methods have become quite popular in queueing theory during the last twenty years. The intention to include these in a students' introduction to queueing theory has been the main motivation for the authors to write the present book. Its aim is a presentation of the most important matrix-analytic concepts like phase-type distributions, Markovian arrival processes, the GI/PH/1 and BMAP/G/1 queues as well as QBDs and discrete time approaches.

5 out of 5 stars It is a good book.......2007-02-12

I haven't read the book. However, from its content I know it is a good book. It seems that everyone loves "Fundamentals of Queueing Theory". However, it has too many pages. 464 pages. I can not believe someone can finish it mostly unless he/she uses that book for textbook and has a weekly lecture about this book. Therefore, if you have good mathematical skill and plan to self-study queueing theory, this is the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars The worst book.......2003-11-27

This is probably the worst book in Scientific computation. This book doesnot explain any topic in depth. It's a waste of money to buy this book.

1 out of 5 stars Whomever reviewed this text positively is an idealistic tool.......2002-05-01

Pavlov's dogs could have been trained to write a better textbook on Matlab computing then the author has done. In fact, I believe this book was written and produced by 1,000 monkeys instead of an esteemed Cornell professor. The examples in the book rarely work and I believe that any careful reader will realize that anyone who gives this book a positive review is a complete tool that probably has nothing better to do than to make excuses for his domestic partner's poor job at crafting such an overpriced waste of tree pulp. It seems to me that professors @ Cornell should stay out of the publishing industry because they just can't seem to get anything right. As for the positive reviewers of this text, I believe they should get some of that South African homegrown Viagra "on tap" and have "a thought-provoking and exciting" time for once in their sad sad lives.

1 out of 5 stars This book is an embarrrassment........2002-04-11

I am in the professors class and the lectures are just as incomprehensible as the book. This book uses mathematics to obscure mathematical concepts beyond recognizability. Its unfortunate that this book has wiped out any interest I might have had in numerical analysis. It is not a good reference for anything except for how to write a terrible book. Specifically, the code doesn't make sense and is often inconsistent, the explanations are scanty, typos are abundant, and any knowledge to be had is lost in the muddle. Don't bother with thisbook.

1 out of 5 stars Did anyone actually edit this book?.......2002-02-11

I find it appalling that in a college level textbook there would be spelling errors, problems that just don't make sense (i.e. a problem referring to making four plots but failing to say what they should be of), and untested matlab scripts. This book looks like it was written on a whim and doesn't really cover matlab, it just presents mathematical problems that should be solvable in matlab, but without providing any examples or information in the text to help.

      1 out of 5 stars incomprehensible trash.......2001-12-18

This book reads like it was compiled from notes written on the back of napkins by some scatter-brained professor. It lacks any sort of logical organization. Convoluted Matlab code is sprinkled throughout the book without any comments or explanations. Even worse are the long numerical tables of program output that are frequently offered up without any context. Mathematical theory is treated as secondary to the meaningless snippets of MatLab code. Explanations of concepts, when the author is so gracious as to include them at all, are terse and incomplete. This is quite simply the worst textbook that I have ever encountered. It is a disgrace that this book ever made it through publishing. Save your money for something else; you cannot learn mathematics from a schizophrenic cookbook.

          5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2002-03-10

I have been using this book for many years as a reference and as a source of interesting diversions. Bellman's typically dense style and leaving some proofs to the reader makes for a lot more material than its 387 pages would indicate. The main topics begin with matrix theory in maxima and minima and quickly get to dynamic programming, differential equations, and stability theory. This is the one good reference I have found on Markov matrices (not Markov processes). The last few topics are control processes, invariant imbedding, and Tychonov regularization. Side topics include Vandermonde matrices, Gaussian quadrature, and much, much more.

1 out of 5 stars Big name - big bomb.......2001-06-05

I had to use this book as a text for a class on Matrix Theory. It is really hard to learn much about matrices from this book. It is poorly organized and assumes you already know a lot. Two quarters of graduate level linear algebra was not enough. I actually drew on results from a number of different graduate courses (diffential equations, real analysis, etc.) to help me and still found this book difficult to learn from.

Many of the sections of the book present key material in a very general way. The proofs are often very condensed and sometimes use more advanced results that can only be found with outside research. Many of the problems are very difficult and require advanced techniques not presented in the book.

Two positives - it has an extensive bibliography and could be a good source of challenging problems for the more advanced student.

              Book Description

Writing towards the close of the nineteenth century, Chekhov - himself a country doctor - recorded in his fiction the symptoms of a diseased society. The seven stories collected here are a bleakly savage indictment of a society paralysed by spiritual malaise, and morbidly conscious of evils which can neither be killed nor cured. This volume also contains an Introduction by Ronald Hingley.

4 out of 5 stars A small collection from one of the masters.......2007-04-08

Chekhov is considered to be one of the greatest short story writers in the world. His short novels and short stories are powerful, intense, different, and meaningful. This book has one of the best of these stories, the very intense "Ward Number Six".

"Ward Number Six" feels like it's a full story by itself. It is, after all, around 45 pages long. Not a full novel, perhaps, but certainly a complete story. What is nice about it, is that it's interesting, drawing, and we get to know the characters well. It's written in Chekhov's typical good writing style, so that's also a plus.

The other stories here too are interesting. "The Butterfly", for example, is a sort of sad little story, but still good. "Ariadne", however, stands above as the strangest story I've ever read. It's told as a story someone told the narrarator, so at some point it just ends, because the rest hasn't happened yet. While a fascinating story, it's funny how it just ENDS.

My only disappointment is that it's so short of a collection. Considering the fact that "Ward Number Six" takes up most of the pages, there are few other stories here. I suppose it's because Oxford World Classics also have other Chekhov collections published and want readers to buy as many as possible. That's quite frustrating. That is the reason for the 4 star rating. It's a nice collection, but I wish there could be a collection with more than a handful of stories.

5 out of 5 stars Cool. Recommended for Doctors.......2004-06-14

I am a junior doc and enjoying reading these stories after work. Conditions is hospitals are better then those Chekhov described and no-one wears frock coats anymore, but the things that are said in Ward number 6 resonate with things you hear disaffected doctors saying. Short engaging stories. Ideal for a week of nights.
