This is a book about modelling, analysis and control of linear time- invariant systems. The book uses what is called the behavioral approach towards mathematical modelling. Thus a system is viewed as a dynamical relation between manifest and latent variables. The emphasis is on dynamical systems that are represented by systems of linear constant coefficients. In the first part of the book the structure of the set of trajectories that such dynamical systems generate is analyzed. Conditions are obtained for two systems of differential equations to be equivalent in the sense that they define the same behavior. It is further shown that the trajectories of such linear differential systems can be partitioned in free inputs and bound outputs. In addition the memory structure of the system is analyzed through state space models. The second part of the book is devoted to a number of important system properties, notably controllability, observability, and stability. An essential feature of using the behavioral approach is that it allows these and similar concepts to be introduced in a representation-free manner. In the third part control problems are considered, more specifically stabilization and pole placement questions. This text is suitable for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students in mathematics and engineering. It contains numerous exercises, including simulation problems, and examples, notably of mechanical systems and electrical circuits.

First Aid to those outside the EE community.......2006-12-02

The book starts off with an extremely useful modeling term: "Exclusion Law." This term describes a notion that any closed system of physical laws/equations (Newton's, etc.) state what's included (possible) and what's excluded (impossible) from its (a certain set of physical laws/equations) interpretation of reality.

Most of the concepts in this text will be nothing new to those who already have a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. Still, learning from the author's choice of words and his arrangement of materials will provide one with a very effective way of communicating modeling ideas to those outside the EE community or to those who are somehow academically juvenile (for example, speaking with someone who had to suffer a poor signals and systems instructor or with anyone who had to deal with a similar academic situation).

"We view a mathematical model as an exlcusion law. A mathematical model expresses the OPINION that some things can happen, are possible, while others cannot, are declared impossible. Thus Kepler claims that planetary orbits that do not satisfy his three famous laws are impossible. In particular, he judges nonelliptical orbits as unphysical. ... Economic production functions tell us that certain amounts of raw materials, capital, and labor are needed in order to manufacture a finished product: it prohibits the creation of finished products unless the required resources are available."

"Dynamical Systems.... The adjective dynamical refers to phenomena with a delayed reaction, phenomena with an aftereffect, with transients, oscillations, and, perhaps, an approach to equilibrium. ...a mathematical model in which the objects of interest are functions of time..."

Systems theory done right!.......2004-04-06

This is an excellent book on mathematical control theory. As opposed to the classical state-space approach, the behavioural theory gives a more fundamental and natural way of looking at physical systems. The book deals with the notions of controllability, observability, stability and feedback in a beautiful mathematical framework. A more appropriate title would be "Systems theory done right"!

This book has everything. Theory, algorithms for numerical methods, etc. etc. etc. If you're taking a linear systems course and want a text that is actually worth while, get a copy of this. It looks like it was printed on a type writer, but it is jam packed with information!

Excellent introductory book.......2004-07-01

I bought and read this book when I first became a grad student under Dorato and Abdallah. Since I've now graduated and am employed elsewhere (and thus can't be accused of sucking up), this is an excellent book that should be recommended reading, if not the primary textbook, for all graduate level LQG courses.

a will "briefly" written book which assumes that the reader has the basics of feedback control and matrix algebra. Each chapter has a MATLAB section at the end which shows some important commands (not codes) that are relevant to the chapter's material. Excellent chapter on robstness design.

Good but not great .......2005-05-09

I find the book interesting for about a chapter. Too much 'showing off' Hansen's professororial interests on Crevecouer and the Greeks and Romans. Yes both historical references are fascinating but Hansen needs help with his tone and the very miring way he has about going to prove a point. You can start to predict the next sentence and the way it will end up satisfying the author's conscience. No, the book is not at all eloquent, but it doesn't make up for it with anything genuinely new and insightful either, for instance: on the agricultural dilemmas of our country and how they affect farmers personally. It is a book that blows off steam basically; finds a way to boast about the rough-hewn character of farmers (Not to be taken so literally, but nevertheless he manages to stereotype the farmer though he despises everyone else for doing it.)Wishy washy on his opinions, Hansen can't really whitewash what he thinks: that we are a bunch of suburban immoralists who just learned that the farm meant more than bucolic. Anyone who reads or watches the news or buys food at all knows more than Hansen thinks we do. As an ex-farm child, I find the book a fair tribute, but the personality of it is almost repulsive. We farmers are not superior keepers of wisdom, we are far more humble than Hansen's ilk. The farmers I know, past and present, have more important things to do than debate every issue, write books and books on our sorrows and fawn over our own demise.

This is certainly a wonderfully written book. I cannot agree with all of the author's opinions, nor his historical data, but he does make some good points and the book is well worth the read. It gives a point of view from the farmer's side, always a good thing, but that being said, it must also be noted that the author needs to face reality. I do recommend this one though and will probably read it again myself. A good one to add to your collection. Thank you Mr Hanson.

Hardhitting, true, and very sad.......2002-06-20

Agrarianism goes down to a hard and dusty death. The realities of growing commodities as a family in California are tough. Hanson does know what he's talking about, contra reader S.M. Stirling, below (I wonder if this fellow even read the book, his comments are so off, not to mention being practically a personal attack on Hanson); he lives the reality of this difficult life while also being a classical scholar. He seems uniquely qualified to illuminate the Greek and Latin roots of agrarianism as the foundation of democracy, and with a lifelong interest in the classics, I found this very interesting; I learned a lot. I highly recommend this book, which I found compelling...

Fertile Food for Thought for The Thinking Human.......2001-11-23

This is one of those few books that I enjoyed and thought about so much that I bought six copies from Amazon to hand out to friends who I believed would also appreciate Hanson's efforts. It really is that exceptional! The thing most notable about "The Land Is Everything" is how much response it will provoke out of you if are a "thinking type". That doesn't mean you will love or hate it all...you will, however, THINK! Despite the definite order the book is arranged in, you will get a sense that much of it was almost written in streams of thought. Hanson seems to meander on tangents at times and in other places even rants but, this stream is still flowing briskly! He focusses in on "Man versus Nature", "Man versus Man", and "Man versus Self" in the realm of small-scale farming.

Hanson is uniquely qualified to write about the subject of farming and it's effects on character. He is a fifth generation grape farmer in California while also a Professor of Classics at CSU Fresno. The clincher is that he can convey his beliefs to paper with a VENGEANCE! The crux of this book is showing how the decline of self-reliant family farms in America is sapping the core character of what an "American" was in our first 200 years. He passionately describes the life, both good and bad, of the American farmer and gives numerous examples of issues that influence his/her character and culture. The fact that America, up until fairly recently, was predominantly a land of farmers is elaborated on at length. Hanson admires and respects the ways the brutal realities of farming the land force farmers to stay literally rooted in hard work, ethics, and honesty even if it sometimes makes them crazy! He then launches into his assessments of the effects on the gradual loss of this culture on the United States today as it becomes more and more "urban" and "cosmopolitan".

One thing I can almost promise: you WILL have an opinion on this book once you've read it. There will be points that you will agree or disagree with strongly and many others that will fall somewhere in between. The bottom line is that you will definitely feel better for having read it.

Finally, if you have found yourself drawn to understand the heroism and motivation of the New York City fireman who fought and died at the World Trade Center attack on 9/11, I doubly recommend this book.

A FINE WORK - on a tragic subject........2000-06-15

As a graduate student in the university (stumbling along the first steps of academia) while at the same time dragging my small farm roots along, I find Victor Hanson's appraisal and insightful commentary frighteningly real to much of my own experience and upbringing. The Land Was Everything is exceptional and comprehensive in outlining a picture of rural life and ideology that most urbanites and farmers alike are not consciously aware of. He writes about the loss of the small farm agrarian but mostly he mourns the loss of characteristics and qualities that come from the farmer, his work, his life, and his toil. To most readers (the growing sea of concrete city folk) his words and stories feel alien and distant and sadly this further proves the author's point. Hanson's unique and diminishing perspective reads as a bitingly honest commentary about where we (as a nation) have come from, where we owe our success, the price of our success, and where we're going in this new millenium. Grounded in the fields and orchards of farming and agrarian life, Hanson demonstrates his intellect and skills of observation in the manner of a scholarly writer and though agrarian and intellectual often antagonize one another within the writing, he is successful at utilizing them to expose and comment on the other. If understanding and consciousness about any of this is the reward for the loss of the small American Farmer, then it's all I could ask for as a reader who wishes that others would pick up The Land Was Everything, listen to its pages, remember the voices of their past, and try to understand the tragedy that has already occurred.

Fascinating glimpse into late 18th C. American life........1999-01-09

The Immigrant's Experience - A good life.......2002-02-19

I first read this book almost fifty years ago as a teenager. A friend had given a copy to my father as a going away present, when he set out to emigrate to America. Even though my parents were much too late to homestead or farm, this story gave me a clear understanding of the promise of America for the immigrant. The hero of the narrative is a poor day laborer's child on one of the large estates of the Kaiser's Germany. He grows up in a one room cabin, which is shared by the livestock, if any. As a teen he emigrates to America.

He does not find the streets paved with gold. Life is never easy. A son almost dies of diphtheria. Home made carts set to run on the rails, are demolished by trains. Bad years come after good. Hired help is difficult to find. But with hard work, honesty, a devoted wife, and time he builds a good life, a family and farm in Iowa. Nothing like this would have been possible at home.

Richard Trost has given us a clear translation, which lovingly reflects the idealism of the original. He also has given careful attention to Americanizing the frequent north German dialect expressions of the original. Anyone who is interested in the immigrant experience will find this book a must reading. It is also a very enjoyable story.

Firsthand glimpse into the birth of the US.......2002-04-14

This book provides a firsthand look back at two crucial events in the forming of the United States: American's response to and reasons for fighting against taxation by the British, and arguments about the Constitution.

In the first half, Letters from a Famer in Pennsylvania, John Dickinson takes great care to explain why Americans should oppose all taxes that the British impose merely to raise money, namely the Townshend Acts. Dickinson expresses his concern over precendents being set, and draws heavily on the previous American refusal to pay the Stamp Act. This section was fairly interesting in that it helped explain some of the reasons Americans didn't want to pay British taxes, but it did become fairly repetitve throughout the letters.

In the second half, Letters from the Federal Farmer, Richard Henry Lee puts forth his arguments about the Constitution before it was ratified by the states. Arguments included why state governments should wield more power than the federal government, whether a bill of rights should be included in the Constitution, and why too much power was located in the federal government outlined in the Constitution.

This book was great fun...and so true. I'm a small town girl who ended up in the country. This will give everyone an insight into living in the country, and learn the 'rules' of country folk.
