Book Description

At the turn of the century some cities and regions in Europe, Japan and the USA, displayed an exceptional capacity to incubate and develop new knowledge and innovations. The favourable environment for research, technology and innovation created in these areas was not immediately obvious, yet it was of great significance for a development based on knowledge, learning, and innovation. Intelligent Cities focuses on these environments of innovation, and the major models (technopoles, innovating regions, intelligent cities) for creating an environment-supporting technology, innovation, learning, and knowledge-based development.
The introduction and the first chapter deal with innovation as an environmental condition, and with the geography and typology of islands of innovation. The next three parts focus on the theoretical paradigms and the planning models of the 'industrial district', the innovating region', and the 'intelligent city', which offer three alternative ways to create an environment of innovation.

5 out of 5 stars Real to virtual innovation policy.......2002-10-20

This important book in the field of regional policy should be required reading for policy-makers, and students of regional policy, interested in the creation or development effective support networks for stimulating innovation in enterprises. The book provides a comprehensive overview of recent trends in regional innovation and technology policy. It illustrates the link between theory and practice through a number of case study projects which Nicos Komninos and his team have implemented in Greece; as well as at EU level through innovation networks with partners in other European regions.

Drawing on this experience, the author sets outs some ground rules for building such virtual innovation management systems at regional level. The argument that is developed is that policy implementation must increasingly focus on diffusing knowledge and learning through virtual support environments.

The book explains how the move from 'real' infrastructure driven innovation and technology enviroments (science parks, innovation centres, industrial districts) has developed towards the need for knowledge diffusion techniques in all sectors of the regional innovation system. It does so through case studies and examples but a final chapter drawing together the conclusions of all these experiences in a summary critique would have been perhaps a useful addition to this otherwise excellent book.

For the range of information covered and the practical information on both policy development for regional innovation strategies and specific techniques such as innovation management tools and regional technology, the book is recommended reading, notably for policy makers and stakeholders in the candidate countries to the European Union faced by the need to 'catch-up' in policy terms.

5 out of 5 stars From Industrial Districts to Virtual Innovation Islands.......2002-10-11

This book is based on more than a decade of practical experience in R&D and innovative projects conducted by the Urban and Regional Innovation Research Unit (URENIO) in Thessalonica and supported by the European Commission. It pays particular attention to concrete examples of innovative projects in less favoured regions and offers a well balanced analysis of policy models and theoretical issues.

The essay is about the contribution of the environment of innovation to the creation of new knowledge. The analysis is articulated around two dimensions: the first focuses on the areas of technological innovation, i.e. cities and regions whose development relies on research and technology; the second concerns the newest development in areas of technological innovation where the information society offers new avenues to handle knowledge and increase the `intelligence' of cities and regions.

The originality of this book is that it combines two complementary strands of analysis which are usually not researched together: theories and planning models for innovative regions on the one hand, and virtual cities and digital applications for the dissemination of innovation on the other hand. By doing this, the author pushes the debate on innovation and regional development a step forward. His central reasoning is that innovative regions evolve from relatively simple structures (such as industrial districts and science parks), to more complex ones where institutional arrangements and digital (non-material) procedures of learning and knowledge diffusion take over. The author's novel contribution is to extend the debate on innovative environments to the next paradigm of technological innovation, based on the de-materialization of basic processes and their digital transcription.

    Product Description

The technology on our body, in our body and all around us enhances our health and well-being from conception to death. Human body and the world in which it functions is a continuously changing complex adaptive system. We are able to collect more and more data about it but the real challenge is to infer local dynamics from that data. Intelligent Caring Biomechatronic Creatures and Healthmaticians (mathematicians serving human health) have a better chance of inferring the dynamics that needs to be understood than human physicians. Humans can only process comfortably three dimensions while computers can see infinite number of dimensions. We will need to trust the distributed network of healthons, Intelligent Caring Creatures, and NURSES (New Unified Resource System Engineers) to create Health Extelligence. We need new vocabulary to push forward in a new way. For instance; healthons are tools combining prevention with diagnosis and treatment based on continuous monitoring and analyzing of our vital signs and biochemistry.

    Book Description

New technologies and applications, along with sophisticated compression techniques and broadband services, have accelerated the growth of the Internet and the number of its users. The Web's variety and depth have enabled certain companies and designers—and their thinking—to stand out. Deep Sites identifies both the key practitioners and the underlying principles that make their work so significant.

The book is organized by critical areas of Web design:

    • Interface: It took a century for early book printers to realize that page numbers facilitated navigation through the book. Roughly a decade after the large-scale development of the Web, designers are still searching for the best ways to navigate cyberspace.
    • Typography: Static forms have to be reinvented when applied to on-screen media, to accommodate time and motion.
    • Animation: With the advent of streaming media, growing bandwidth, and leaner data, the Web will become a serious competitor to television. The design implications are manifold and center on the problem of combining print and TV environments into new formats.
    • Community: The explosive growth of personal and community homepages has spawned entirely new approaches—crude, candid, innocent, and outrageously diverse—that have begun to exert their influence on professional design.
    • Authoring: Dozens of editorial and design software tools make it possible for nonprofessionals to create sites of considerable complexity and formal quality.

    Over 500 color illustrations.

1 out of 5 stars Really expensive screenshots.......2004-08-03

I bought the book because it was recommended in a computer magazine. It was recommeded as a book detailing best practices for complex websites.
However it's just a collection of (smallish) screenshots of JavaScript and Flash Websites. Most of which are either already offline or not usable in current Browsers. The explanatory texts are very short (a handful of paragraphs for each site) and ususally detail the biography of the website author.
All in all a fairly useless book, maybe except you're looking for web designers to contract.

5 out of 5 stars For advanced SQA pros and academics.......2001-06-13

The first two parts of this 3-part book are a collection of monographs and essays on software quality management and certification and testing topics. The third part is devoted to software quality and testing tools.

Since I am more interested in processes and techniques I focused more on the first two parts, which were truly state-of-the-art with respect to subject matter and approach.

Among Part I's highlights were the essays on knowledge and quality management, and cost benefit models for quality assurance. Other essays (paradigms of software quality management and software development, and process-oriented software quality management) were well written and filled with original thinking, but this ground has been covered by so many authors that my interest waned.

Part II, Certification and Testing, had an excellent essay on testing web and e-business applications that I particularly liked. If you are in the embedded or safety-critical development and QA environment, the essay on certifying and testing these systems is definitely worthwhile.

This 288 page book is copiously illustrated with 99 figures and 14 tables. If you are looking for a book on software testing this is not it. It is best suited for advanced SQA practitioners and academics. If you are among that group it is a worthwhile read and will give you fresh ideas and keep you up-to-date in your professional reading. For the audience I cited it is a five star book and highly recommended.

                Book Description

From the critically acclaimed author of Oh! and An Amateur's Guide to the Night, Mary Robison's first new work in over a decade.

After a ten-year silence, Mary Robison has emerged with a novel so beguiling and funny, it has brought her live reading audiences to their feet. Why Did I Ever? takes us along on the darkest of private journeys. The story, told by a narrator named Money Breton, is submitted like a furious and persuasive diary-a tale as fierce and taut as its fictional teller.

Forces are bearing down on Money. Three husbands have left her. I.R.S. agents are whamming on her door. Her grown children are in trouble. And her beloved cat has gone missing. She's back and forth between Melanie, her secluded Southern town, and L.A., where she has a weakening grasp on her job as a script doctor. Having been sacked by most of the studios and convinced that her dealings with Hollywood have fractured her personality and rendered her a multiple, Money talks to herself nonstop, telling her mirrored reflection, "That face needs cheekbones," telling her hands, "Quit shaking, people can see," telling herself finally, "Shut up! I don't care what you think!" She glues and hammers and paints every item in her place. She addresses her former husbands, asking them "You did what kind of work?" She forges loving inscriptions in all her books. She drives in circles all over the South. She occupies herself any way that works. Through it all, there is Mev, her darling puzzling daughter who lives close by but seems ever beyond reach, and Paulie, her son, the damaged victim of a violent crime under police protection in New York. Now, while both her children seem to be losing all their battles, Money tries for ways and reasons to keep battling.

Why Did I Ever? is a book of piercing intellect and belligerent humor. It is certain to have a profound impact, not only on Robison's devoted following but on the shape of the contemporary novel itself.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-10-17

This is the story of Money Breton, her children--Mev and Paulie, the men in her life--Hollis and Dix, the people she works with and for, and the odd cast of characters she meets in her daily wanderings.

Told in short flashes and blurbs with only the occasional scene that is more than two or three paragraphs, and with Robison's dry and spot on humor and her characteristic ability to make you cry without even trying, this book is nothing short of brilliant as it weaves the reader through the addled and complex brain of Money, script doctor, lover of bad men, mother of lost children, and sufferer of ADD.

Ultimately, this is the story of how Money falls apart and comes back together, continuously, and just keeps on living. She lives despite the fact that her daughter is addicted to methadone and despite the fact that her son has been brutally raped and because of that is imprisoned in a witness protection program. She lives despite the fact that the people she works for are crazy and produce crappy movies (which she writes) and despite the fact that the men she spends time with are all wrong. She lives because everywhere she sees herself or a there-but-by-the-grace-of-god version of herself. Her friends are the Deaf Woman next door and the version of herself she talks to and her cat who keeps running away, only to die in the last section.

But Money keeps going. Because that's what you do.Like Money, Robison takes risks and, in the end, they pay off. Read this writer, is what I say. You won't be sorry.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I've ever read!.......2004-02-12

Save your money. Save your time. I read close to a 100 books a year (I'm an English professor), but I don't usually write reviews. I decided to write this one as a warning. This book has nothing going for it. It contains clip upon clip of disjointed, pointless rants. It's absolutely unreadable. I would give it zero stars, except that's not an option.

                3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2003-08-22

I had a hard time with the writing style. It was so jumpy, so terse, so "left unsaid" that I felt like the author was trying too hard to make me think. (She would probably be a very good poet!) The storyline involving her son Paulie was the most compelling part of the book, in my opinion, but I thought there was not enough written about this subplot. The writing was clearly well-thought, and there were some very funny and witty passages, but I guess the book seemed too disjointed for me to rate it higher.

5 out of 5 stars Get This Book.......2003-08-12

This is the best book I have read in a long time. You'll laugh; you'll cry. The format is a little different, but you should find yourself hooked almost immediately.
The characters: a neurotic Hollywood script doctor; her methadone addicted daughter and hospitalized son; some truly wacky neighbors; a couple of la-la land soulless bozos, and an exasperating cat.
Money Breton is a character you will remember and this is a book you will want to keep.
