      Book Description

Vortex methods have matured in recent years, offering an interesting alternative to finite difference and spectral methods for high resolution numerical solutions of the Navier Stokes equations. In the past three decades, research into the numerical analysis aspects of vortex methods has provided a solid mathematical background for understanding the accuracy and stability of the method. At the same time vortex methods retain their appealing physical character, which was the motivation for their introduction. This book presents and analyzes vortex methods as a tool for the direct numerical simulation of impressible viscous flows. It will interest graduate students and researchers in numerical analysis and fluid mechanics and also serve as an ideal textbook for courses in fluid dynamics.

            Book Description

This book was originally published in 1977 and has since been reprinted four times (the last reprint was in 1984). The current volume is reprinted and fully retypeset by the AMS. It is very close in content to the 1984 edition. The book presents a systematic treatment of results on the theory and numerical analysis of the Navier-Stokes equations for viscous incompressible fluids. Considered are the linearized stationary case, the nonlinear stationary case, and the full nonlinear time-dependent case. The relevant mathematical tools are introduced at each stage.

The new material in this book is Appendix III, reproducing a survey article written in 1998. This appendix contains a few aspects not addressed in the earlier editions, in particular a short derivation of the Navier-Stokes equations from the basic conservation principles in continuum mechanics, further historical perspectives, and indications on new developments in the area. The appendix also surveys some aspects of the related Euler equations and the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Readers are advised to peruse this appendix before reading the core of the book.

This book presents basic results on the theory of Navier-Stokes equations and, as such, continues to serve as a comprehensive reference source on the topic.

                  Book Description

The notions of stability and instability play a very important role in mathematical physics and, in particular, in mathematical models of fluids flows. Currently, one of the most important problems in this area is to describe different kinds of instability, to understand their nature, and also to work out methods for recognizing whether a mathematical model is stable or instable.
In the current volume, Claude Bardos and Andrei Fursikov, have drawn together an impressive array of international contributors to present important recent results and perspectives in this area. The main topics covered are devoted to mathematical aspects of the theory but some novel schemes used in applied mathematics are also presented.

Various topics from control theory, free boundary problems, Navier-Stokes equations, first order linear and nonlinear equations, 3D incompressible Euler equations, large time behavior of solutions, etc. are concentrated around the main goal of these volumes the stability (instability) of mathematical models, the very important property playing the key role in the investigation of fluid flows from the mathematical, physical, and computational points of view. World - known specialists present their new results, advantages in this area, different methods and approaches to the study of the stability of models simulating different processes in fluid mechanics.

                    Book Description

Stability is a very important property of mathematical models simulating physical processes which provides an adequate description of the process. Starting from the classical notion of the well-posedness in the Hadamard sense, this notion was adapted to different areas of research and at present is understood, depending on the physical problem under consideration, as the Lyapunov stability of stationary solutions, stability of specified initial data, stability of averaged models, etc.

The stability property is of great interest for researchers in many fields such as mathematical analysis, theory of partial differential equations, optimal control, numerical analysis, fluid mechanics, etc. etc. The variety of recent results, surveys, methods and approaches to different models presented by leading world-known mathematicians, makes both volumes devoted to the stability and instability of mathematical models in fluid mechanics very attractive for provisional buyers/readers working in the above mentioned and related areas.

                      Book Description

This is the first of four volumes on the Navier-Stokes equations, specifically on Linearized Steady Problems. The volumes deal with the fundamental mathematical properties of the Navier-Stokes equations, such as existence, regularity and uniqueness of solutions, and, for unbounded domains, their asymptotic behavior. The work is an up-to-date and detailed investigation of these problems for motions in domains of different types: bounded, exterior and domain with noncompact boundaries. Throughout the work, main problems which, so far, remain open are pointed out and for some of these conjectures are offered. New results are presented throughout, while several classical subjects are treated in a completely original way. The work is mathematically self contained, requiring no specific background. The 200-plus exercises along with the chapter summaries and questions make this an excellent textbook for any theoretical Fluid Mechanics course; it is suitable as well for self teaching. It is set up to remain useful as a reference or dictionary.

Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) is remembered as one of the very pioneers of the genre of science-fiction. He is also remembered for his Leftist politics, including a stint with the Fabian Society and his embracing of "Free Love." This book was written in 1899, and is one of the last science-fiction books he wrote before his turn towards social realism in his writing.

In this dystopian novel, Graham falls into a coma-like sleep, a sleep that he wakes from some 203 years in the future. But times have changed. Due to the wise investments of a board of trustees, Graham's money has compounded into the greatest fortune the world has ever seen, and the trustees have used it to virtually enslave the entire planet. The common people know that those who use "The Master's" money are misusing it, and they pine for a time when the sleeper will wake and set things right. But now that Graham is awake, he finds himself a pawn in a world he little understands.

Overall, I found this to be an interesting book. H.G. Wells made a lot of predictions in the book that have sense come to pass, including airplanes, the rise of trans-national corporations that are not under the control of their nation of origin, the rise of a decadent class of useless, pretty, party-people (Hollywood), and so much more. The one fly in the ointment, however, was Wells' use of race. The leaders use an army of "Negroes" to control the population, "They are fine loyal brutes, with no wash of ideas in their heads..."

But, that said, I did find this to be a fascinating, forward looking book. Mr. Wells is rightly remembered for his near prescience in matters of science, and this book shows how much he knew about the future of economics as well. I highly recommend this book.

                      4 out of 5 stars a true classic.......2005-12-17

finished this just the other night and what a finish. i'm not going to spoil it because if you havn't read it you should - if you like your sci-fi with a liberal portion of politics and social commentary (which i guess i do).

from the very beginning, the beauty of the writing is that it shares the sense of dislocation and naivete of the protagonist most eloquently. a man waking in a future world where what he sees around him is totally unfamiliar, yet what lies underneath is an expression of barbarism that a post-enlightment intellectual would surely find abhorrent.

the technology wells envisions is perhaps the most telling sign of his intensly perceptive style. the only inline editorial note is towards the end, where an insert advises that wells is writing of aeroplanes 11 years before the first took to the sky and of aerial fighting 18 years before the first dogfight (although once you've made it to flying, it's not that very large a mental gap at all to flying and fighting together...). alongwith telephones, televisions and the classic moving pathway or travelator (found also in asimov, the fantastic planet and others), the other main visual vocabulary is in the architecture. It's all about the scale and in this you could maybe argue (if you were stoned and theoretically ambitious...) that future comrades-in-architecture took some inspiration. which is to say that it reminds me of beijing and berlin, the only two cities i've visted that either were or are communist.

but it's the social commentary i enjoy the most. a rather dark piece of commentary it is too, marking it alongside brave new world, 1984 et. al. the most unsettling part about reading this was to ponder in 2005 the questions wells was asking in 1899. are the extrapolations he was making, perhaps influenced by contempory thinking such as conspicous consumption and antecedents such as rosseau, bearing themselves out today? The stark seperations Veblen was identifying in the seperation of classes by the work they perform (essentially split into industrial and non-industrial) are a central theme in The Sleeper (first published in 1899, the same year as Veblen's The Leisure Class).

                      4 out of 5 stars Intrusting, but..........2004-02-10

The concept and story are intrusting. Wells is certinly a good auther, however I do not find the story absorbing. That said, it offers an intrustind (somewhat pessimistic) view of the future.
                      recomended.

The Sleeper is just an ordinary man, no one special, just someone going about his everyday business. Until one day he awakes, and finds that the world around him has changed. No longer a nobody, he has been catapulted into the unenviable position of a pawn in a dangerous conspiracy where the stakes are high and the players shockingly intelligent. For this is not the world that the Sleeper knows, but a new and terrifying mutation.

                        2 out of 5 stars Imperfect future.......2006-11-29

In the 1890s, a man called Graham goes into a sleep (coma?) for 200 years and wakes up in a radically changed London. Cities have taken over most of the available space, there are flying machines and power is in the hands of a few multi-national coporations to the extent that national governments are an irrelevance. Graham's position in this new world is unexpectedly important - but just what is his new role and how can he adapt to it?

This is a variant on the familiar plot device of a time machine, giving the author the chance to run flights of fancy about how the future might look. Wells does this in some detail, and of course you can wonder at his prescience when he gets things right or nearly right (of course, this "correctness" relates to our own time, not 2090, but let's skip that). But, science fiction is inevitably as much about the time in which it was written as it is about crystal ball gazing. There's much in the book that Wells gets "wrong" and much that gives the game away that he was writing with a Victorian mindset: for example, Graham is told that the Chinese "are no longer ashamed of their race" (???), and although emancipation of women has indeed arrived, it's felt that they were really better off in the 1890s when they knew their place.

All this though is pretty much by-the-by. As a piece of fiction I struggled with it, as I do with a lot of science fiction, because more of the book is devoted to the theorising about Well's imagined future than it is about provding a worthwhile plot to keep the reader interested. In truth, whatever story was there became bogged down in endless discussions between the characters on the world in 2090, especially compared to that in 1890. I appreciate sci-fi fans might enjoy this kind of thing, but it's not for me.

The Everyman edition is really great, though it has many additional information about H.G. Wells and his time. So if you want to get additional information this book is the right one. John Lawtons introduction gives you a brief overview about H.G. Wells and the book. A listing of historical facts, Wells life and science and art, sort by date, gives the reader the possibility to understand his books better. At the end some critics are collected and suggestions for further reading are made.

                        The book itself / Summary:
A stranger came to an artist and reported him that he can't sleep. The artist invites him in his house, where the stranger falls asleep in a chair. The artist thinks he died, as he doesn't react anymore, but he just fell into a deep trance. The years passed on and Isbister, the artist, doesn't believe that he will ever wake again.
But long after Isbister's death, Graham, the stranger, wakes in an unknown surrounding and everything seems very strange. From outside he can hear people screaming "Wake" but he doesn't know what this means and soon after his awakening he faints. After he recovers he is told that his trance lasted 203 years. He learns a lot about the new age and there is still the crowd which requires the Sleeper. Because of this, he goes on a balcony where the people can see him, but he is pulled away and a man leads him through a huge building and finally to the council. After a short discussion he is brought into 2 rooms, where he's kept imprisoned. In his room he discovers new things, but he doesn't get new information about the world. After a few days a few people help him to escape and after a chase he lands in a theatre, where the people receive him. But he is very weak and so he's brought into a small room, where Graham is told that he owns nearly the whole world, because his fortune grew steadily. He meets Lincoln, who was Ostrog's brother, who is the leader of the revolution, and an unknown beautiful woman. Graham appears in front of the crowd and tells them to march, because Lincoln told him to do so. Then a fight begins in front of the council house, which Graham watches guarded from the distance, but the enemies chase Graham and so he looses his guards and has to flee. In a lonely street he meets an old man, who tells him the history of the world and that Ostrog just takes advantage of the Sleeper. As Graham reveals himself the old man doesn't want to believe and so Graham goes back to Ostrog's headquarter, where he meets Ostrog for the first time. After watching the decline from the council, they go to the council house and Graham gets a Japanese attendant, whose name is Asano. Graham and Asano go to the top of a wind-vane and later to a high society party, where Graham is told much more about the world. After Graham flew with an Aeropile, an aeroplane, he is so fascinated that he spends his next days with becoming an aeronaut. Then he meets again the unknown woman, which is Helen Woton, a niece of Ostrog, she reports him of the slavery and bad conditions under which the people are living and begs that he should rule. He discusses his knew knowledge with Ostrog, but he tries to convince him that everything is necessary. However Graham, guarded by Asano, goes into the city to see how the people are really living. After watching the middle class and the stations in which children are brought up, he goes to the working places of the poor workers. He's very upset while watching them, but he hears shouts which tell him that the black police is coming. The black police is feared, as they are a cruel specialist unit of Negros, which should bring the people into order. Graham and Asano flee back to the headquarter, where Graham has a quarrel with Ostrog and as a result Ostrog wants to imprison him. However the crowd sees this and they free Graham, but an Aeropile can help Ostrog to escape. Helen comes back and Graham holds a speech to the people to prepare them for a war to prevent the black police from reaching London. They can capture one flight stage out of four, but this is not enough and so Graham decides to take an Aeropile to fight against the aeroplanes, which bring the black police. He's successful and able to dispel and even destroy some ships from the black police. After this large fight, he sees the Aeropile in which Ostrog flees and he starts to fight it but he looses and the earth is coming near.

4 out of 5 stars Dawn of Science Fiction.......2003-09-04

In "When the Sleeper Wakes", H.G. Wells departs from his previous occupation of writing novels based on fantasy and fabrication and turns to using the methods of science fiction and applying his projections of societal development to his stories.

In making his projections of what the future was to be like, Wells saw the enemy as monopolist/capitalist and portrayed them in the future as the great corporation.

This was the evil of capitalism, which lead Wells to conclude that the business states would take the place of what was 19th Century Governments.

The flaw with this in the novel is that as a result of this new type of order, individuals are victims of the category of person that fate places them in. People are measured by their utility or lack of utility.

Wells' vision is repulsive rather than desirable, and it is clear that he doesn't believe in the ability of society to live up to its own ideals of equality and justice.

We've seen this played out on the world stage during the industrial revolution, which gave birth to the evils of communism. Wells was a visionary, no doubt, but this story underestimates the human spirit and what happens when you combine Democracy with Capitalism!

3 out of 5 stars When the sleeper wakes..........2001-09-06

When the sleeper wakes is a fairly good book, but not something I would choose to read again. The book doesn't exactly give either a realistic or creative idea for the future, when 'The Sleeper' ends up in 2010. There are barely any things that change in those two hundred years, which is an odd concept to handle. How they refer to people is the same as in the beginning of the story when he's in the 1800's.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Terrible Awakening.......2001-02-28

Another of Wells' dark futuristic visions, this novel is about a man who falls into a deep sleep in the Victorian age and wakes up early in the 22nd century. Wells predicts much of the technology that would be invented in the 20th century. This story is not just a fascinating read but a poignant social commentary.
