Cassandras' "Discrete Event Systems" is up there with Horowitz and Hill's "The Art of Electronics", Strang's "Introduction to Applied Mathematics" and Hayt and Kemmerly's "Engineering Circuit Analysis". These books all share an ability to take a complex area and cover it broadly, yet keep the reader interested and convey an infectious enthusiasm for the subject.

Cassandras builds a basis for presentation by weaving together such diverse topics as continuous systems models, discrete time systems, automata theory and Markov chanis. These are used to present the notions of timed and untimed discrete event systems and elementary queuing theory.

The theoretical developments consume about 6 of the 9 chapters. In addition, there is an excellent appendix on basic probability theory. The three remaining chapters (chapter 4, 8 and 9) focus directly on simulation.

Fault-tolerant control aims at a graceful degradation of the behaviour of automated systems in case of faults. It satisfies the industrial demand for enhanced availability and safety, in contrast to traditional reactions to faults that bring about sudden shutdowns and loss of availability.

The book presents effective model-based analysis and design methods for fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control. Architectural and structural models are used to analyse the propagation of the fault throught the process, to test the fault detectability and to find the redundancies in the process that can be used to ensure fault tolerance. Design methods for diagnostic systems and fault-tolerant controllers are presented for processes that are described by analytical models, by discrete-event models or that can be dealt with as quantised systems. Five case studies on pilot processes show the applicability of the presented methods. The theoretical results are illustrated by two running examples used throughout the book.

The second edition includes new material about reconfigurable control, diagnosis of nonlinear systems, and remote diagnosis. The application examples are extended by a steering-by-wire system and the air path of a diesel engine, both of which include experimental results. The bibliographical notes at the end of all chapters have been up-dated. The chapters end with exercises to be used in lectures.

The very first book on the discrete event systems.......2002-12-11

Being a pioneer of perturbation theory, Prof. Ho clearly explains the basic principles of discrete event systems and gradient-based perturbation analysis.
Also, appendix includes a section on comparative analysis on various discrete event system formalisms, including automata, Petri nets, finitely recursive processes, generalized semi-markov process, and fintely recursive processes.
Overall, a must reading for those are interested in discrete event system theory, simulation and/or stochastic analysis.

Difficult book with some errors.......2000-04-14

I found the book rather difficult. A lot of knowledge is assumed to be known or very ill explained. Some of the equations contained mathematical errors (e.g. forgetting a minus sign). This is definitely a No-No for beginners on the subject of perturbation analysis.

This book was such a pleasure to read. I couldn't put the book down. It gives a nice history on the llamos (plains) in Venezuela as well as a love story. It isn't without it's twists and turns in the plot either. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Un libro vale la pena.......2006-12-17

Doña Bárbara es un cuento de las luchas intérnales y estrénales de un
hombre, Santos Luzardos, que regresa al lugar de su nacimiento después de veinte años de ausencia. Pero cuando regresó a Altamira, el nombre de la hacienda de su nacimiento, descubrió que su vecina, Doña Bárbara, ha robado mucho de sus tierras y ha aterrorizado su familia por años.

Más que una lucha dentro vecino y vecina, es una lucha entre civilización y barbarie. Obviamente doña Bárbara represente el lado barbarie. Ella es casi una bruja y tiene poderes sobrenaturales que usa para controlar a la gente del llano. Santos, por la otra mano, representa la civilización. Es un hombre de la ciudad que quiere traer orden a una tierra sin leyes. Pero las leyes de la ciudad no funcionan en los llanos, y para triunfar contra la barbarie tiene que ser barbarie también. Cuando el sistema legal no funciona, tiene que hacer justicia con sus propias manos, necesita pelear fuego con fuego. Tiene que perder algunos de sus ideales para no perder la lucha.

Lo que me gustan más de esa novela, son los personalidades. Me siento que Gallegos debe ser esquizofrénico para describir tantas personalidades diversas. Hay hombres fuertes, débiles, y locos. Hay una mujer sumamente inocente y una otra sumamente barbarie. El libro me confunde un poquito porque hay tantos personajes, pero la mayoría no son muy importantes y no creo que una persona pierda mucho si no puede recordar todas.

La trama de la novela no es como una trama moderna. La acción no pasa muy rápido y todo es muy lineal. No hay flashbacks o varios cuentos que se unen al fin. Es muy clásico y directo. Pero el aspecto de la narración que me parece más interesante es el realismo de la novela. Hay aspectos fantásticos en la novela, como la brujería, pero la mayoría de la novela trata de cosas reales. Muchos libros clásicos no tratan de cosas como violación y asesinato, y menos tratan de violación y asesinato como se los pasan en el mundo real a gente real. La trama no es genio, pero es un espejo interesante al pasado.

Sobre todo, esta novela me parece muy interesante. Pero como no soy una hispanohablante nativa, también me parece bastante difícil. Pero es vale la pena leerlo. La primera parte es un poco lento con mucha descripción y muchas palabras desconocidas. Pero la segunda parte tiene mucho más acción y no pierdo tanto en las descripciones. Yo recomendaría este libro a cualquier persona que está interesada en historia o literatura latinoamericana.

Los personajes de Doña Barbara.......2006-12-15

Me gustó mucho esta novella por varias razones, pero lo que tuvo una impresión más fuerte para mi fue Doña Bárbara. Muchos dicen que ella es un personaje que no tiene credibilidad. Yo creo que sin ella, la novela, no hubiera sido tan interesante como fue para mi. Yo sé que ella tiene un cambio de character en la tercera parte pero este sirve para mostrar que no hay una manera de ser absolutamente. Ella representa en diferentes maneras la clase de las latifundas, y el llano. Al final de la novela, ella claramente no es la misma mujer terrible que fue al principio de la novela, pero, creo que ella tiene algo en común con Santos. Ambos tienen una pasión. Me gusta que Doña Bárbara tiene una conversión durante el progreso de la novela. En el cápitulo IX ella regresa a su ropa femenina. Esto significa su retorno a la moralidad. Ella tiene "malos instintos" pero al mismo tiempo "sentimientos nuevos". Aquí es donde a mi me parece interesante la novela. Es que el lector no puede pensar que Doña Bárbara solo tiene una personalidad. Hay mucho desarollo en su personalidad porque hay una lucha que es presente en su vida. Me gusta cuando ella dice: "Ya tú no; eres la misma" (253) Este indica que ella es una mujer muy compleja. Pero me pregunto porque el autor: Gallegos no hace que Santos y Bárbara encuentren un conflicto lleno de emoción. Hay mucho de la psicologia que pasa en la mente de Doña Bárbara pero que no está escrito en palabras explicitas. Doña Bárbara tiene poder de cual ella su misma no está consciente. Lo que es importante de distinguir es que como sugiere su nombre: Doña Bárbara es parte de la Barbarie y Santos representa lo que es "civilizado". Es interesante ver que las descripciones que uno asocia con la barbarie son: tenebroso, sombrío, oscuro.etc. Santos, por otro lado parece ser el hombre honorable, porque en la luz, en el dia hay optimismo. Su personaje de "civilización" se asocia con lo bueno y es posible que el autor propone una idea de "superioridad" aqui. Pero creo que la lucha es más fuerte para Santos porque el necesita luchar contra el llano y Doña Bárbara y eso le da miedo. Es decir, ambos personajes refeljan algo sobre la sociedad venezolana. Santos quiere salvar la sociedad y Doña Bárbara está en un posición de preservar algo que una vez pertenecía a ella pero ahora se fue. Esta novela tiene muchos temas pero la verdad es que hay muchas forzas que juegan contra otras y esas forzas son las que producen una novela tan emocionante y llena de tensión.

Opinion sobre la novela - Doña Barbara.......2006-12-15

La novela me parece muy regional - el lenguaje puede ser complicado si el español no es su primera legua. Pero a pesar los regionalismos la novela esta bien escrita: los hechos y los personajes son muy bien desarrollados y algunas partes son una maravilla. Ya que he leído la novela, comprendo porque hicieron películas: la trama es muy interesante y los detalles nos permiten ver como suceden las cosas en cada rincón del llano: las casas, la naturaleza, los trabajos, la cocina etc.
En mi opinión, Doña Bárbara se puede llamar la novela de la tierra. Cada uno de los personajes lucha por las tierras, en este caso por el llano. El llano esta descrito por el autor como una tierra muy machista y dura. Solamente el hombre fuerte puede sobrevivir y tener el poder allá: "derecho natural de brazo armado de lazo [...] forma primitiva de adquirir" (p.233) "la fuerza es todavía derecho" (p233). Esta tierra y los hombres que la ocupan son barbares y peligrosos. El mas fuerte esta privilegiado y explota al mas débil.
Comprendo a Doña Bárbara porque el autor ha creado un personaje complexo que tiene razones para ser como es. La soledad y el aislamiento que ella ha experimentado desde su juventud por no tener familia o a nadie que se ocupe de ella o para protegerla, el hecho de que ella ha sido violada y maltratada pueden explicar su carácter muy macho y muy rígido. Ella ha sobrevivido, pues ha aprendido y utilizado contra los hombres las leyes que ellos mismos han creado para apoderarse de los otros.
Cada vez que un hombre quiere aprovecharse de ella vemos la misma historia: es ella quien se aprovecha de el. Lo que le garantiza el suceso es su habilidad de observar y comprender como funcionan los hombres del llano. Ella siempre piensa y esta muy cuidadosa cuando habla, cuando acciona o toma decisión. Es verdad, algunos hechos me parecen exagerados, pero no reducen del valor de la novela: el cambio de Marisela de la noche a la mañana, el retrato de Santos que el autor quiere perfecto, el cambio sentimental de doña Bárbara, la ingenuidad de todos los otros personajes en comparación con Santos.
Santos es el personaje que tiene intenciones civilizadoras. El quiere no solamente rehacer la situación de Altamira, pero mejorar la condición y la gente del llano. Aunque no ha pasado que su infancia en Altamira, el conoce y practica perfectamente los trabajos llaneros los más difíciles que el recuerda, porque miraba a su padre. También conoce perfectamente el trabajo del avocado con solamente haber terminado sus estudios. Este personaje ideal no mira y no escucha a los peones y a los que el considera inferiores. Ni se recuerda de Mujiquita, ni parece apreciar su esfuerzo para complacerle y ayudarle. Además, para comprobar su desintereso le distorsiona el nombre. Algunas veces su vanidad me parece sin límites.
Me parece muy divertido el cambio de Doña Bárbara, "la devoradora de hombres" que "hasta allí todos sus amantes, victimas de su codicia o instrumentos de su crueldad habían sido suyos como las bestias que llevaban la marca de su hierro" y que ahora "quería pertenecerle [a Santos], aunque tuviera que ser como le pertenecían a el las reses..." porque el no le tiene miedo y no la desea. La verdad es que este cambio no es para mí que una vuelta a la persona que Doña Bárbara era antes de perder a Asdrúbal, antes de reprimir sus sentimientos para poder sobrevivir, un cambio que le causa la muerte.
En cambio, Santos y Marisela se metamorfosean a lo largo de la novela. Marisela, con la ayuda de Santos se transforma en una mujer bella, compasiva y educada, digna de ser la esposa de Santos. Santos se adapta a la barbarie del llano y se da cuenta que para suceder tiene que aceptar las leyes de los llanos. Al fin de la novela el es nada más que un peón y acepta a Marisela como su esposa.

Esta novela es muy importante para la literatura hispanoamericana porque muestra al lector actual una representación de la gente y los costumbres de aquella época en Venezuela. Creo que la obra tiene valor literario pero a mi no me gusta el estilo tradicional de la novela ( o tal vez no me gusta esta novela porque mi nombre es Bárbara!)
Al principio de la novela las descripciones de la naturaleza son interesantes aunque se representa como una fuerza bárbara y fea que tiene el poder de arrancar lo salvaje del hombre. Por las descripciones, la novela me recuerda un poco a Heart of darkness de Joseph Conrad. Es interesante la historia de doña Bárbara pero no se desarrolla mucho su personaje porque en esta novela, vale más el propósito civilizador que los personajes individuales. Doña Bárbara también me recuerda de La Celestina porque es una mujer con poder que hace brujerías pero la obra no tiene ni un indicio de un propósito feminista. Desde mi perspectiva de una mujer del siglo 21, a veces es difícil tomar en serio la obra por la manera en que hablan los personajes de doña Bárbara como una devoradora de hombres y tales cosas. Me gusta también el hecho de que Santos Luzardos quiere "amansarla" como si fuera una yegua o algo por el estilo. Al principio de la novela el lector tiene que ver a doña Bárbara como un ser humano porque ella tiene sentimientos. Pero después de haber violada se convierte en alguien cruel y salvaje. A lo largo de la novela, parece que ella se convierte en una idea o la personificación de la barbarie del llano porque a veces se habla de ella y el llano en el mismo párrafo y es difícil distinguir entre los dos.
El tema de la civilización contra la barbarie en esta obra me cansa porque Gallegos no deja que el lector decide entre los dos por si mismo. Yo sé que el propósito principal de esta obra fue fomentar el desarollo del país y la educación de los llaneros, pero sale también a lo largo de la novela un tono nacionalista que refleja el orgullo que tenía Gallegos para Venezuela. Vale la pena leer esta novela, pero no creo que es necesario leer cada página para entender bien la idea, y admito que a veces tuve que brincar de otra página porque a veces los diálogos no tienen mucho que ver con la historia.

British sepllings in an American book?!.......2007-08-30

This book would be worth 5 stars......if all the resources were usable. However, several things are not reproducible because they contain British spellings (colour, behaviour, organise, etc.) This seems to be a major oversight in the printing process. For example, the center labels are wonderful, but center is spelled "centre" on each and thus I cannot use them. Great book....but a terrible disappointment with the unusable materials with British spelling!

Primary Schoolteacher's Dream!.......2000-06-08

This is definitely a comprehensive as well as helpful book for an ELEMENTARY level schoolteacher. It contains a multitude of repoducibles and ideas for the K-6 grades. A teacher need not worry about signs, awards, or letters to parents. JUMBO BOOK OF TEAHER TIPS AND TIMESAVERS makes me wish I taught primary school. Someone PLEASE develop a book like this for the upper grades!

Después de muchos años y con una mirada muy diferente desde otro rincón del mundo, he vuelto a leer este libro del cual recordaba su trama central, pero del que ya había olvidado sus detalles y me ha sorprendido el haber redescubierto sus valores. Para mi su mayor importancia radica en la definición del componente del llanero en la identidad venezolana, su riqueza narrativa en la descripción de los personajes y la naturaleza y el tratamiento del tema civilización barbarie sin matar la barbarie de forma radical.
La definición de la personalidad del llanero venezolano en esta novela, con su perfil psicológico, y la revelación de su existencia como componente importante de esa naciente nación, ayudaron sustancialmente a incorporar a este sector de la sociedad en el imaginario venezolano y aquí considero que radica el principal aporte de Gallegos a la identidad de Venezuela, en momentos en que toda Latinoamérica se empeñaba en esta función de definir su identidad como naciones.
La forma en que están descritos los detalles del medio ambiente y la naturaleza, así como la descripción de las características físicas y psicológicas de los personajes, me causaron la impresión de que me encontraba contemplando la pintura de un paisaje. La narrativa del autor, para mi, constituye un valor literario por si misma y en este sentido disfruté mucho de la lectura dejándome llevar por el rió y los llanos venezolanos, como un observador presente en el paisaje que describe el autor. De esta narrativa, sólo critico la forma en que es descrito el personaje del Brujeador donde considero que el autor hizo una conexión innecesaria entre la vileza del personaje y su procedencia racial, pudiendo esteriotipar a los nativos indígenas como personas inferiores.
En cuanto al tratamiento del tema civilización cultura, tratado principalmente a través de los personajes de Santos Luzardo y Doña Bárbara, creo que Gallegos logró transmitir la necesidad de realizar un esfuerzo civilizador en las nuevas naciones americanas para llevar la justicia y luchar contra la anarquía y impunidad en las zonas rurales, sin embargo, para mi, el autor deja implícito que aunque la barbarie es derrotada, sigue viva en los propios civilizadores que la utilizan como un instrumento para lograr sus objetivos y porque Santos en cierta forma la incorpora a su forma de proceder, al sufrir el mismo una transformación de readaptación a la vida del llano bárbaro.
En sentido general, me gusto volver a reencontrarme con esta obra literaria, que para mi criterio, conserva los valores que la hicieron famosa y sigue constituyendo una obra importante para nuestra definición identitaria como pueblo Latinoamericano.

Romulo Gallegos gives us an entriguing read of the struggle between the forces of Civilization and Barbarism through his Venezuelan novel Dona Barbara. Santos Luzardo and Dona Barbara are engaged in a family struggle over a land dispute. There is a romantic attraction between the wild child Marisela who Santos Luzardo finds in the wilderness and takes home to educate. Dona Barbara uses her powers of witchcraft and sex appealto terrorize and control all the men in the town, even the government officials. The book is loaded with steamy sex scenes between Dona Barbara, Bambino Paiba and almost every one else except the horse. Good triumphs over evil in the end of this regional South American Classic.
