What is wit?.......2006-08-20
This book effectively and clearly outlines different kinds of visual wit. People often say you cannot learn or study topics like this... "A Smile in the Mind" dispels this myth. For anyone who is interested in learning more about communication through wit.
When the brain farts.......2006-06-05
I read the reviews, I like wit. I like deisign. thought that this wiuld be a good book for me to get. WRONG. The book is filled with lackluster designs using wit from the 80's and 70's. WIT is not an excuse for poor design. There are some good pieces, but most of them are out dated. Get this book if you want a history lesson about 80's design. The only good thing about the book are the interviews at the end and that is not worth the price of admission. Phaidon has done me wrong again. Will, no, can they put out a good book?
Inspirational and Invigorating........2005-08-26
This is an exceptional book on the topic of visual wit. It does give more credit to a few pedestrian examples than is absolutely deserved, but it's an awesome read. That is, if you actually READ it, and not just look at the pretty pictures, it is interesting, inspiring, and invigorating. It's an excellent book to read when you are getting burned out by killjoy clients, the CEO's wife, or non-existant budgets.
Especially useful are the interviews in the back. Realizing that even Saul Bass and Milton Glaser had/have issues with creativity and wit is inspiring.
THE solution for creativity block..........2005-08-09
I've read tens of design books, yet this is the one I'd recommend if you were lost on an island and only had access to one.
It contains some of the wittiest designs and creations, and takes a good stab at explaining what made them witty in the first place.
If you want to get your creative juices flowing and innovate to the extend the world has never seen, this is the book to pray to.
A pleasure to read from start to finish.

This little book is perfect to read to a child and discuss peace. Although it had black and white pages and no color, the pictures grab you! I recommend it as a quick way to get into a discussion of ways we can practice peace-keeping in our communities.

I love love love this book! It is so beautiful. It has 365 meditations and uplifting and humourous thoughts. So you can pick one for each day of the year. The book shows the lovely artwork of Richard Daiensai which is uplifting, inspiring, beautiful. Yes the book does make me smile. Its a real gem. Makes a wonderful gift too.

This talk was recorded on January 23, 1950 (not at Yogananda's birthday as an earlier reviewer guesses) at the Hollywood Temple's "Church of All Religions" and reproduced by SRF as the 4th in a series of unique recordings where one may experience the vivid, energetic style of this great yoga master. With his inimitable humor and stories, Yogananda offers many of his secrets for keeping one's balance and inner peace amidst the challenges of modern life. As always, Yogananda's themes revolve around how to live a productive life in the world while keeping one's heart attuned to the love of The Creator. He launches this talk by considering the New Testament study of Jesus "breaking the Sabbath" and explores the real (inner) meaning of keeping the Sabbath -- going deeply to the Kingdom Within and then maintaining that awareness and attunement throughout the day. He sympathizes that our training and habits make it a challenge to "practice the presence" so that one may be "in the world but not of it".
As an aid to all who would be seekers of Spirit and servants of humanity, Yogananda recommends combining Raja (meditative) Yoga and the active yoga of service (Karma Yoga) -- the same simple and loving spiritual solution Jesus offered when he explained his healing work on the Sabbath.
As he did in Autobiography of a Yogi and throughout his teachings, Yogananda demonstrates the commonality of the core teachings of all religions (drawing most heavily on the teachings of Christ and Krishna). Most helpfully, he offers strategies for bringing all these universal teachings to bear on the intense challenges that modern life presents.
As of 2003, SRF has released six recordings in this series, and it is rewarding to hear the great yoga master's voice express clearly and directly (the old wire/cylinder recording have been electronically cleaned of most static, etc.). The other recordings were made at special events (such as special Christmas or Easter services); this recording offers us an example of an "average" Sunday service of the type with which Yogananda inspired students at SRF centers during the 1940s and early 50s. It's a powerful way to take yourself into the experience of that presence and his message: far above "average."

This is the cutest little book I've seen in a while! Flipping through the pages, I'm reminided again and again of how lucky I am to be a girl! The reasons are so fitting- some made me smile, while some made me laugh out loud or feel a wave of nostalgia. Put it on your Christmas list this year!

This book really is a gem! Hardly a page goes by that doesn't remind me of something -- a shared joke, a fun night out with friends, an old boyfriend, a dating disaster that I now laugh about. So much of the book is right on target for me. It's a great little pick-me-up and I highly recommend it to all chicks!

Good but only 20 projects offered.......2000-10-12
So far I have made four of the projects in this book: a candle holder, a plate, a picture frame, and a candle sconce. There was room for improvement on my part with the candle holder, but everything else came out pretty much the way it should have according to the book. The photos that accompany each instructional step really have with projects such as these. There is also a pictoral index of the ingredients and supplies needed to complete the projects introduced. I love working with salt dough and have been giving dough ornaments as creative (and terribly cheap) Christmas gifts for two years. This book is a great beginners book for the novice artist looking to tackle a new medium to work with. It's VERY fun.
