Book Description
This book expounds trade theory emphasizing that a trading equilibrium is general rather than partial, and is often best modelled using dual or envelope functions. This yields a compact treatment of standard theory, clarifies some errors and confusions, and produces some new departures. In particular, the book (i) gives unified treatments of comparative statics and welfare, (ii) sheds new light on the factor-price equalization issue, (iii) treats the modern specific-factor model in parallel with the usual Heckscher-Ohlin one, (iv) analyses the balance of payments in general equilibrium with flexible and fixed prices, (v) studies imperfect competition and intra-industry trade.
Customer Reviews:
A good book for international trade, but not perfect.......2004-02-02
The book gets into rather good discusion of basic models, equilibrium and more advanced topics. The math level of the book is at a graduate level and many of the results are done with enough details, discussion and algebra. However, the book suffers from lack of algebra and enough reasoning in the first chapters where it is describing basic models. The notation of the book is sometimes confusing too (I think this problem exists in all of the books about international trade). Besides, the book is rather old and may be missing some topics. A complementarity text for this book is recommended.

Book Description
In Dual Models, written in the same enthusiastic style as its predecessors Polyhedron Models and Spherical Models, Magnus J. Wenninger presents the complete set of uniform duals of uniform polyhedral, thus rounding out a significant body of knowledge with respect to polyhedral forms. He begins with the simplest convex solids but then goes on to show how all the more difficult, non convex, uniform polyhedral duals can be derived from a geometric theorem on duality that unifies and systematizes the entire set of such duals. Many of these complex shapes are published here for the first time. Models made by the author are shown in photographs, and these, along with line drawings, diagrams, and commentary, invite readers to undertake the task of making the models, using index cards or tag paper and glue as construction materials. The mathematics is deliberately kept at the high school or secondary level, and hence the book presumes at most some knowledge of geometry and ordinary trigonometry and the use of a scientific type small electronic calculator. The book will be useful as enrichment material for the mathematics classroom and can serve equally well as a source book of ideas for artists and designers of decorative devices or simply as a hobby book in recreational mathematics.

The companion to Polyhedron Models.......2000-06-13
While not as popular as his _Polyhedron Models_, Fr. Magnus Wenninger again provides a fascinating look into polyhedra, this time investigating the duals of the 75 uniform polyhedra. It is immediately evident why _Dual Models_ has not proven as popular--the reading level is significantly higher, as it is filled with detailed diagrams and plenty of mathematical background. The technical nature of dual polyhedra makes it much more difficult to explain, so it's understandable that this text lacks the same clarity and ease-of-approach that _Polyhedron Models_ did. Unfortunately, there isn't enough information provided to actually build all the examples--you'll have to do some of your own computation. Finally, the duals simply aren't as attractive or interesting as the uniform polyhedra, so the reader isn't as inclined to make models of them. But in the end, if you found _Polyhedron Models_ interesting, you'll also enjoy this book: they naturally complement each other.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A655953. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis examines the current trends within the United States to move towards greater dependence on the commercial sector for military defense. Dual-use technologies impact the Defense acquisition process. it will discuss the risks associated with the migration of a defense industrial base to one of a national industrial base. Research will include conducting a thorough literature search, review of historical dual-use issues as well as defense and commercial initiatives in this area. Dual-use technologies can come in the form of CI or NDI. These items have the potential to save the program manager quite a bit of money, especially in the development costs. However, some would argue that these items might not be able to satisfy the peculiar environment required by the military. Others contend this to be the best method of procurement during this dwindling budget era. As DoD continues to rely on dual-use items, commercial sector initiatives gain momentum, particularly in the form of best practices. The program manager faces numerous challenges in employing dual-use technology.

Book Description
The book suggests a novel way how the effects of tax reforms especially in the field of capital income taxation can be measured by means of dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) models. Using a model calibrated to the German economy, the author evaluates and quantifies the effects of introducing a Dual Income Tax (DIT) in Germany. This tax reform is a currently hotly debated topic in Germany and has been suggested both by the German Council of Economic Advisors (GCEA) and by Prof. Hans-Werner Sinn. Thus, the book is of great interest not only for the academic but also for the business world and politics.

Competition in a Dual Economy.......2006-03-02
Traditional industrial organization literature sees competition as occurring primarily within individual industries between essentially undifferentiated firms. By contrast the dual economy approach suggests that in an analysis of competition all firms can be usefully grouped into two broad categories, core and periphery, on the basis of size and joint market share. The generalized competitive process is correspondingly bifurcated, producing two distinct rates of profits and two distinct risk-return relationships. Joseph Bowing places the dual economy in a historical context and analyzes the evolution of core and periphery competition. He also refines the dual economy hypothesis and provides strong new empirical support for it.
The usual industrial organization analysis points to a homogeneous competitive rate of return among firms without significant market power and a heterogeneous set of oligopoly profit rates determined by conditions in particular industries rather than by generalized competitive forces. Dr. Bowring's analysis and empirical results suggest, instead, that it is large, dominant firms, core firms, that engage in the most active interindustry competition. The result is that they earn profit rates that are higher, less risky, and more homogeneous than those earned by periphery firms.

GREAT!!!.......1998-07-18
This was a superb, excellent, magnificent, glorious, terrific, marvelous, and otherwise GOOD BOOK.
Book Description
No special needs group among people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities strains the service capacity of community and residential services to a greater extent than do people with dual diagnoses of developmental and psychiatric conditions. During the past decade many provider agencies have developed specialized services for people with dual diagnosis. Some have specialized in a primary focus of service for such people, including residential or housing and day services. Although these programs incorporate mental health services and heightened clinician presence and influence on everyday activities compared to other developmental services programs, progressive specialized programs also include key elements typical of the most progressive nonspecialized settings. The program models for residential and day services in this book include the entire range of residential and housing options available for people with dual diagnosis. These program models share common features that are responsive to the prevailing philosophy of individualized service, tempered by important differences in service mix and approaches that reflect differing needs of different subgroups of people with dual diagnosis.
Book Description
One of the major challenges to the integrity of individualized developmental services in community systems for the past two decades has been the assurance of timely, accessible, and high quality partial and periodic or intermittent services. For people with dual diagnosis of psychiatric and developmental conditions, this challenge is heightened by the need for conventional developmental services combined with community mental health services, in addition to social and health services. Although partial and intermittent service approaches are intended, generally, to be conducive to supportive living and compatible with group home living, in fact these goals have not been readily achieved. This volume represents the interactionist position that has become more common in service design and development today. It is our hope that the dissemination of effective models of services and support for people with dual diagnoses, such as those presented in this volume, will accelerate the development of sufficient partial services for people with dual diagnoses. As pioneering efforts in organizing partial dual diagnosis service provision, some of the models presented are still in development, and it is hoped that their breadth and scope will inspire programmatic and evaluative innovation.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A134914. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Predictive models of dual task performance were developed with the cognitive architecture, Atomic Components of Thought- Rational (ACT-R), as well as the Improved Research Integration Tool (IMPRINT). The tasks modeled included a shooting task and a mathematical comprehension task, with the shooting task designated as primary. The models were designed to predict one specific type of error performance during the shooting task; in this study, errors were defined as enemy targets missed (ETM). ETM was defined as an enemy target that "popped up" but was never engaged. Preliminary results have generated ETM predictions via ACT-R and IMPRINT; these results will be validated by future studies.

Customer Reviews:
Relatively good notes for subject.......2005-10-30
Here is an honest review of the book for what it is, not the ethical and educational implications of reading this book. In terms of the educational value received from the book, it's not too bad. Although their vocabulary isn't as great as the vocabular sparknotes employs, their guides seem to colloquially explain the subject material, which is the purpose of the book. I bought the book because I was at Target and needed a guide for an upcomming test where I wouldn't have internet access the nights before (I usually use sparknotes because it's free), and I was surprised by the writing quality of the book. Granted, it's not as good as Fitzgeral's writing, however it does relate the story, which is the primary purpose for a history class.
Concerning the people who have condemned this book, they need to understand the multiple approaches to learning subject areas. Currently I maintain a schedule where on good days I receive 6 hours of sleep and on bad a receive 3 to none because of my busy schedule and heavy extra-cirricular activity. Reading cliff-notes doesn't mean we as readers won't look in the book for quotes (for example - writing a paper) to support our ideas. Simply condemning them because they're not the real book is unfair to the book, the authors, and the people that use cliff notes for ligitimate purposes. Overall, it conveys the idea well, however sparknotes does an equally decent job.
DONT DO IT.......2005-10-14
I am embarrased that someone is looking at this page and considering reading the cliffnotes for one the the best (and not to mention shortest) pieces of american literature. Try to use your brains for something other than reality television and choosing a fast food joint. Its not all that hard to read this book and understand it. ENJOY!
What are you thinking?!.......2002-10-09
Stop right now. Do NOT buy this. Buy the actual book instead! I know, I know, crazy idea in this day and age, but Cliffs Notes are exactly what is wrong with the world of literature these days: too many people reading the Reader's Digest version, and not enough actually reading great literature! I mean, come on people, the book is less than 200 pages long. You can read it in one sitting. And it's not even that difficult to understand--the prose is limpid and the plot engrossing. Don't cheat; don't take the easy way out. Do the right thing. Read the book, not the Cliffs Notes.
Very helpful........2002-08-21
"Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (Cliffs Notes)" is a great way to help you understand what you're reading, if you're having difficulties. If you're not having a problem reading "The Great Gatsby," this will give you questions to test your knowledge of the book. Of course, you should read the Cliffs Notes AFTER you read "The Great Gatsby," not instead of. I recommend.
Pathetic.......2002-04-19
I am not a student. I wanted to read The Great Gatsby but I had no one with whom I could discuss the story. I decided in a momentary lapse of judgment to supplement my reading with the Cliffs Notes. Unfortunately, it was full of grammatical errors and what I found to be very superficial commentaries.
Book Description
The “colossal affair” that is Jay Gatsby’s mansion, Owl Eyes, Wolfsheim and his “gonnegtions,” West Egg, East Egg, the valley of ashes, Jordan Baker, and Daisy Fay—they belong to all time as does the American classic in which they appear. But a classic belongs to its own time, too, and this meticulously compiled, handsomely designed and generously illustrated volume documents the social reality out of which The Great Gatsby grew and the cultural milieu in which F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote. It thus identifies for contemporary readers the crazes and events, the celebrities and the criminals, the music and dances and books, that the novel’s first readers in 1925 would have immediately recognized. This invaluable companion to The Great Gatsby also examines—and illustrates with facsimiles of pages from Fitzgerald’s handwritten drafts and revised typescripts—the arduous process of composition that ultimately produced the book hailed by critic Gilbert Seldes as “vivid and glittering and entertaining.” Reviews and promotions as well as correspondence and comment from such literary figures as Edmund Wilson, Ernest Hemingway, Edith Wharton, and H. L. Mencken illuminate Gatsby’s mostly favorable critical reception. Still, in the wake of the 1940s’ Fitzgerald revival, as this volume’s final chapter on the enduring reputation of The Great Gatsby shows, the novel has fulfilled Fitzgerald’s boast that he wrote for “the youth of his own generation, the critics of the next, and the schoolmasters ever afterward,” as well as the moviemakers, play producers, choreographers, and composers. And all students of Fitzgerald and general readers will find new insights into what makes Gatsby great in this generously illustrated, engaging reference book’s every chapter.
