Book Description

This non-rigorous, yet accurate presentation of the applications of calculus to technologies is exceptionally student-oriented. The presentation is clear and concise, the examples are worked in great detail (enhanced by marginal annotations), and step-by-step procedures are used whenever possible. While the approach is accessible and intuitive, the author has retained the TTspiritTT of the calculus by use of historical notes, interesting asides, and informal motivations.

4 out of 5 stars Technical Calculus with Analytic Geometry by Peter Kuhfittig.......2002-12-07

This is a great textbook for first timers learning calculus or just as a refresher for the basic concpets. The author Peter Kuhfittig keeps all the concepts together and doesn't bog down the reader with extremely long mathematically definitions. He gives the reader example problems and then plenty of problems to work. The only recommendation I would make to the author is to put every odd problem's solution or some even problem solutions in the solutions manual since they (even problems) or usually the harder problems to work out anyway. Only every other odd problem's solution is in the "Solutions Manual".

For an expensive book such as this one, you would expect the author to explain the concepts in greater detail. Unfortunately, he doesn't and that is why I am looking elsewhere for an explanation of the material. Also, there are not enough useful examples in the book. If you are looking for a book that explains the concepts in detail and gives an ample amount of examples, save yourself the time and money by purchasing another book.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best calculus books ever.......2007-09-10

A wonderful book for anyone who wants to learn geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and beginning differential equations on their own or to go back and fill in holes.

This book leaves you wishing you had seen it earlier in life. I found myself smacking my forehead at how simply and powerfully it implants information into the readers mind. So clearly written and fun to read that since the early 1990s when it came out I have gone through many copies by giving it away to students and friends who wanted to learn or become better at calculus and mathematics in their spare time (and with little time to spare). I got online to buy another copy and was surprised it had not yet been reviewed!

Every chapter starts with a succinct lesson and then jumps into many worked examples that build upon each other until the reader is dizzyingly skilled. Little cartoon owls give special insight and mnemonic phrases in key places. Each chapter ends with exercises and solutions to odd numbered problems.

This book is ideal for people who have even moderate skill at Algebra I/II. College level physicists, engineers, and other applied scientists will really enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Examples directly relate to the questions.......2006-06-09

I'm doing calculus and intending to use it for computer programming. This book gives full coverage of several pieces of material which are not in or are poorly explained in the recent books on this subject. The author does an excellent job of giving a solid set of examples and exercises (that directly relate to the examples) that you can immediately dig into.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference!.......2003-10-06

I used this book in my freshman calculus course quite some time ago, but found it very readable and well laid out. Since then I've gone back to grad school and am taking courses in mathematical physics and quantum mechanics. This book has been such an invaluable resource that I just bought another copy to replace the old one (which is totally falling apart!). It has been an essential tool for solving the grueling problem sets that have been assigned to me this semester.

Being that this is an old and out of print edition, I was able to buy it for next to nothing, which makes it even better!

Besides, calculus doesn't change, just the pretty pictures and graphs that get put into the calculus text books. Unless you need a certain book for a particular class, you'll be better off buying the 6th ed. of this book. It's much more affordable and has all the information as a $100 text...just less pictures.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid like the plague........1999-10-20

Incomplete explanations, poor exposition, and left-out steps make this a poor choice for the calculus newbie. I tried to learn calculus on my own with this book and was tripped-up repeatedly by this totally inadequate textbook. I then picked up a copy of Calculus with Analytic Geometry by George F. Simmons which was a pleasure to read and work-through. This book even manages to make the concept of limits fuzzy; a problem which the Simmons book cleared up immediately. This text might be a concise refresher for someone who has studied the subject before, but if you are looking for a textbook to study on your own, steer clear.

                  Book Description

First published in 1689, John Locke’s Essay Concerning Human Understanding is widely recognised as among the greatest works in the history of Western philosophy. The Essay puts forward a systematic empiricist theory of mind, detailing how all ideas and knowledge arise from sense experience. Locke was trained in mechanical philosophy and he crafted his account to be consistent with the best natural science of his day. The Essay was highly influential and its rendering of empiricism would become the standard for subsequent theorists. This Companion volume includes fifteen new essays from leading scholars. Covering the major themes of Locke’s work, they explain his views while situating the ideas in the historical context of Locke’s day and often clarifying their relationship to ongoing work in philosophy. Pitched to advanced undergraduates and graduate students, it is ideal for use in courses on early modern philosophy, British empiricism and John Locke.

                  Book Description

Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690) withstood an onslaught by traditional theologians, for rejecting orthodox theology and the concept of innate ideas: as he suggested that God could make matter think. The Essay quickly became one of the most influential books of the eighteenth century, and its contributions to the philosophy of space and time, matter and power were quickly hailed as formative contributions to the philosophy.

                  5 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking book.......2005-04-03

Another book I read while getting my BA in Philosophy at UCLA. The most interesting thing about this work of Locke's is that we also have Leibnitz's New Essays, which discusses it point by point. As far as I know this is a unique situation among the extant works of the classic thinkers.

5 out of 5 stars One of the major works in Western Philosophy.......2005-01-20

It has been many years since I pondered and repondered over this volume. Locke is an important figure in the history of Western Philosophy. He is really the founding figure of the great empirical tradition which would go through Hume all the way up to the various analytical philosophies of the twentieth century.
He is also a major political thinker whose importance for the great founders of America cannot be overestimated.
Locke talks about the mind as tabula rasa as a blank slate which experience writes upon, and reflection compounds into ' complex ideas' The simple ideas come through experience. This total rejection of inherent ideas, and inherent structures of the mind is something which a lot of modern linguistic theory rejects.
As to the way we apprehend experience immediately I think here too Locke is in some way contradicted by modern psychological theory which would speak in some sense about our structuring that experience through our own participation in perception. In other words Locke's model of perception is I believe a far too ' passive one'. I cannot however judge, as I do not know enough about the subject whether or not Lockean categories in these areas of perception, reflection and in general description of the way we experience and know the world have any force today.
Locke's political thinking is incorporated in the Declaration of Independence with its formulation of rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As strong opponent of tyrannical authority in the political world Locke's thinking made a real impact on the world. He is one of those thinkers at the foundation of modern democratic thought.
The book is not easy reading. I can remember going back over it again and again to try and understand the difference between primary and secondary qualities- I can remember trying to understand how much of what Locke says has validity and is ' really the truth'.
Parenthetically I think of how as a young person knowing the truth finding the truth was such a supreme value for me. And how I thus felt it so important to know whether Locke was ' right' or not. Time and experience perhaps have made me worse. And I see this work as yet one more effort to interpret and understand Reality . This is as if to say I at this age anyway seem to accept the idea that I myself will not know and find the truth in regard to everything, including the philosophy of Locke.
Again. This is one of the major works of Western philosophy and it should be read and studied by one who cares to know the Western philosophical tradition.

2 out of 5 stars Not unless you need it..........2004-01-01

For the most part, this book is unreadable and uninspiring. The abridged editions are not much better. It was highly influential in its time, so it's standard reading for history-of-philosophy courses. This is one of several excellent reasons why you shouldn't take history of philosophy courses.

For the voluntary reader, the fact that Locke was highly influential also means that his ideas have been developed into something clearer and more interesting by the intervening generations. Read Hume or a 20th-cent. empiricist instead.

5 out of 5 stars Only to Be Used in Scholarly Research.......2003-12-29

The Nidditch edition of Locke's Essay is commonly considered the authoritative version of the text. This in mind, the Nidditch text is to be avoided for the beginner to Locke. This is not due to any oversights or editorial intrusion that corrupts the work. Considering Nidditch restored the text and avoided the common editorial tendency to use paragraph introductions for each section (which Locke did not), atop of not having to contend with translation liberties, it stands as the only scholarly edition of the work. However, because it is restored to its original state, one must remember that capitalization for any and all (deemed) pertinent terms or phrases was a common practice during Locke's time. As such, readers in the 21st century typically associate a capitalized letter (unless it is a proper name or title) with a new sentence, thus a new thought. Having to continuously reorganize one's thoughts to conform to Locke's now archaic prose style (which occurs anywhere from one to six or more times in a typical sentence) distracts from the overall content of the work. As such, the reader may be well advised to obtain another critical edition of the work and use the Nidditch text as a reference tool.

                  5 out of 5 stars Worth Re-Cognising.......2003-04-05

Any search for this text will result in a plethora of commentaries upon it, whilst it itself seems almost doomed to take second place. The importance of this work to philosophy cannot be underestimated; Descartes is held in common perception to be the figure who changed the course of philosophy. Whilst it is true he may have dipped his toes in uncharted waters, Locke was the first to plunge in. Here we find human understanding stripped to its first principles and from there rebuilt in such a fashion as to purge the presumptions of our age. Locke recommends modesty to the philosopher and thinker throughout and in our current times this message might need restated. In a world, which owes so much to the United States Constitution, it would be appropriate for us all to see what it owed its own origins to and be recalled to values of liberty, modesty and reason in a way which does not rush headlong into a catastrophe of pride.

After lengthy discussion on the origin of ideas, the nature of language, and the nature of knowledge, Locke got around to arguing what he indicated in the opening Epistle to the Reader to be his overarching aim: how we ought to govern our belief, especially (though by no means only) on matters of religion and morality. Professor Wolterstorff shows that what above all placed this topic on Locke's agenda was the collapse, in his day, of a once-unified moral and religious tradition in Europe into warring factions. Locke's epistemology was thus a culturally and socially engaged one; it was his response to the cultural crisis of his day. Convinced also that of genuine knowledge we human beings have very little, Locke argued that instead of following tradition we ought to turn "to the things themselves" and let "Reason be your guide." This view of Locke, in which centrality is given to the last book of the "Essay," invites an interpretation of the origins of modern philosophy different from most of the current ones. Accordingly, after discussing Hume's powerful attack on Locke's recommended practice, Wolterstorff argues for Locke's originality and discusses his contribution to the modernity of post-sixteenth-century philosophy.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Book on the Thoughts of Gottfried Leibniz.......2005-04-06

The contribution of Gottfried Leibniz to the development of man is immeasurable. However, knowing his contribution is difficult to assemble because Leibniz published only one book during his life. Yet, he was a prolific writer of papers and letters to many people on many subject. Beside discovering the infinitesimal calculus, which is taught is all high schools today, he was known as a 'walking encyclopedia.'

The material in this book was made by Leibniz in response to England's John Locke's 'Essay Concerning Human Understanding' (1690). The material was prepared by Leibniz to use it in a debate with Locke. Locke proposed physical atoms for the universe. This is consistent with Newton's physical universe. But, Leibniz proposed monads, which are becoming part of modern creation theories. However, Locke died and the debate never occurred. Instead, Leibniz established correspondence in 1715-16 with Samuel Clark, a disciple of Isaac Newton. This correspondence is an excellent summary of Leibniz's thoughts before he died in 1716. It shows the basic differences between Newton and Leibniz in both science and mathematics.

This book should become part of the home library of any intellectual family.

This book is exactly what it says on the tin - a point by point response to Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Thus it's pretty pointless to try reading this if you haven't already read the Essay. It's interesting from the point of view that it's virtually the only example of one great philosopher making a detailed reply to another's work, and that besides the Theodicy it's Leibniz's only full length book. The problem is that detail however - this is only marginally shorter than Locke's Essay, and the problem of the Essay's repetiveness is exacerbated here, as Leibniz seems to say the same things over and over again. The dialogue form is also disappointing as Leibniz puts in very little effort to make the speakers even remotely realistic (although some claim that the work is, stylistically, unfinished, which accounts for that).

In terms of the edition, it's much like all the others in the Cambridge History of Philosophy Range, which is to say, very nice, with a helpful introduction.

Overall, I'd say this is a book for study, rather than reading for enlightenment. For scholars of Locke and Leibniz only.

                          Book Description

Reading Hume on Human Understanding is a companion to the study of one of the great works of Western philosophy. David Hume's Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1748) has long been recognized as one of the best 'classics' for introducing students to the subject; these essays, most of them specially written for this volume, show how much more than this it is. The aims of the volume are: to provide a general overview of the Enquiry, especially for those approaching it for the first time; to set it in the context of Hume's philosophical work as a whole and establish its importance in that context: to elucidate, analyse, and assess the philosophy of the Enquiry, and clarify its interpretation; and to discuss recent developments in Hume scholarship that are relevant to the Enquiry. The eminent contributors to this volume cover a broad range of topics: meaning, induction, scepticism, belief, personal identity, causation, freedom, miracles, probability, and religious belief. These topics remain at the centre of philosophical debate today, and Hume's treatment of them in the Enquiry continues to demand attention and attract controversy.

                            Book Description

Locke on Human Understanding, is a comprehensive introduction to John Locke's major work, Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Locke's Essay remains a key work in many philosophical fields, notably in epistemology, metaphysics and the philosophies of mind and language. In addition, Locke is often referred to as the first English empiricist. Knowledge of this influential work and figure is essential to Enlightenment thought.

                            E. J. Lowe's approach enables students to effectively study the Essay by placing Locke's life and works in their intellectual and historical context. The book provides a critical examination of the leading themes in the Essay, illuminating the main lines in Locke's thinking. Such topics include innate ideas, perception, primary and secondary qualities, personal identity, free will, action and language. Finally, E. J. Lowe examines the comtemporary work being done on this highly influential English philosopher.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Locke -- and to Lowe.......1999-08-02

John Locke was without a doubt one of the sanest and soberest souls ever to put pen to paper. Here philosopher Jonathan Lowe provides a fine and thorough introduction to Locke's greatest and most influential work: his _Essay Concerning Human Understanding_.

Lowe not only provides clear and sound explications of Locke's own views, carefully placing them into historical context, but also inquires into whether Locke's views can be defended today -- and, perhaps surprisingly, finds that many of them are defensible though perhaps in need of modification. And Lowe does not hesitate to add his own views where necessary, by way of suggesting how a modern follower of Locke might carry his philosophy forward in light of scientific developments since Locke's day.

The result is more than an introduction to Locke -- it is a scintillating volume that will be a pleasurable read even for longtime readers of Locke. Lowe has a knack for picking out the most interesting features of Locke's thought and presenting them in a new light.

For example, I was quite struck by Lowe's remarks on Locke's "particularist" (Lowe's term) view of logic. Locke, as his readers may know, was extremely critical of syllogistic formalism, holding that while reasoned arguments may indeed be put in syllogistic form, it was nevertheless ridiculous to maintain that the use of the form itself is what gives validity to an argument. As Locke famously remarked, God was not so sparing as to make men barely two-legged and leave it to Aristotle to make them rational.

Lowe trenchantly notes that Locke's critiques would apply equally well to the Frege-Russell variety of formal logic; Locke, very much like Brand Blanshard in _Reason and Analysis_, held that we reason by connecting terms through their _meanings_, which a strictly formal logic provides no way to do.

Lowe's remarks on this point are food for thought not only on the matter of formal logic but on the question of what allegedly divides "rationalism" from "empiricism." Elsewhere in this volume, Lowe suggests that the firm distinction between these allegedly opposite schools of thought cannot be made out; and Locke was quite clearly a rationalist as regards knowledge even if he believed we arrived at all of our our ideas "empirically." That is, Locke clearly still has something to say to the rationalist philosophers of our own day -- and through Lowe, he says it.

And says it well: it is very much to Lowe's credit that, through his own lucid prose, he has allowed Locke to speak so clearly. The reader of this excellent introduction will find Locke to be fine intellectual company -- and also Lowe, a clear thinker and graceful writer whose own admiration for Locke is never explicitly stated but is nevertheless obvious through the keen sympathy of his presentation.

All in all, then, a delightful volume very much in the Lockean spirit.

                              Book Description

This is the first of three volumes which will contain all of Locke's extant philosophical writings relating to An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, not included in other Clarendon editions like the Correspondence. It contains the earliest known drafts of the Essay, Drafts A and B, both written in 1671, and provides for the first time an accurate version of Locke's text. Virtually all his changes are recorded in footnotes on each page. Peter Nidditch, whose highly acclaimed edition of An Essay Concerning Human Understanding was published in this series in 1975, used pioneering editorial techniques in his compilation of Volume 1. Most of the work was completed before his tragically early death in 1983. Volumes 2 and 3, almost wholly the work of G. A. J. Rogers will contain the third extant draft of the Essay (Draft C), the Epitome and the Conduct of the Understanding. They will also include a History of the Writing of the Essay, together with other shorter writings by Locke.
