Book Description
More than ever, American industry especially the semiconductor industry is using statistical methods to improve its competitive edge in the world market. It is becoming more imperative that graduate engineers have solid statistical know-how, yet engineers in industry typically are not well-prepared to use statistics and they are fuzzy about how to apply statistical tools and techniques. This valuable reference makes statistical methods easier and more accessible to engineers.
Although the book can be read sequentially, like a normal textbook, it is designed to be used as a handbook, pointing the reader to the topics and sections pertinent to a particular type of statistical problem. It contains the following features:
* Covers all major topics treated in a standard college engineering statistics course, but minimizes the mathematical derivations and focuses on practical applications
* Uses real data sets/case studies taken from electronics, electrical engineering, and other engineering fields, such as mechanical and chemical engineering
* Contains numerous software examples using the powerful statistical functions of Excel
In addition, the book provides an "engineering problem solver" section that directs the reader to the relevant section of the book for the problem they are trying to solve. The accompanying CD-ROM contains the Excel data sets for the examples and case studies given in the book, along with other statistical tools and software.
* Filled with practical techniques directly applicable on the job
* Contains hundreds of solved problems and case studies, using real data sets
* Avoids unnecessary theory

This is an in depth clear book about the process of botanical illustration. Well written and great pictures. Recommend highly!
Book Description
Martin Eden, Jack London’s semiautobiographical novel about a struggling young writer, is considered by many to be the author’s most mature work. Personifying London’s own dreams of education and literary fame as a young man in San Francisco, Martin Eden’s impassioned but ultimately ineffective battle to overcome his bleak circumstances makes him one of the most memorable and poignant characters Jack London ever created. As Paul Berman points out in his Introduction, “In Martin, [London] created one of the great twisted heroes of American literature . . . a hero doomed from the outset because his own passions are bigger and more complicated than any man could bear.”
Download Description
Set in San Francisco, this is the story of Martin Eden, an impoverished seaman who pursues, obsessively and aggressively, dreams of education and literary fame. London, dissatisfied with the rewards of his own success, intended Martin Eden as an attack on individualism and a criticism of ambition; however, much of its status as a classic has been conferred by admirers of its ambitious protagonist.
Customer Reviews:
London highlights ridiculous "celebrity" worship.......2007-08-02
In Martin Eden, Jack London provides the portrait of a young man who thirsts for knowledge, for self-improvement, to join the upper ranks of the intelligent and cultured within his society. We seem to be setting off in a "Jude the Obscure" direction. Martin loves a young woman from this society, and strives to make himself worthy. His chosen vehicle from his class and station to hers is self-education, and then the writing of serious and important work. Along the way, Martain has to swallow the unpleasant truth that those he believed to be so intelligent were actually entirely superficial in understanding. Pieces of London from other novels come through. London's belief in the "superman" comes through, as well as his disdain for the oligarchs, for example. What is most striking, however, is the dead-on skewering of celebrity worship. "Where were you when I needed you" might be Martin's refrain. The same people who ignored and derided him suddenly can't get enough of him. Why? He was the same person he was before. It was simply because other people told them so. They all just want a piece of the celebirty, to be associated with him somehow. While in real life London of course courted celebrity, the stupidity of this is blindingly apparent and even more important nearly a century later. London readers may miss the absence of the "Charmian" strong female counterpart in this book (unlike in the Sea Wolf or The Abysmal Brute or Mutiny on the Elsinore, for example). The "classy" love interest doesn't measure up in terms of independent intelligence or strength of will, and her last appearance is particularly troubling. Lizzie, from the lower socioeconomic classes, has the speark but is too held back by her upbringing. This is truly an important book.
A Neglected Classic.......2006-09-17
It's surprising that London is so well known for his writings about nature while a classic like Martin Eden is practically forgotten. Here London shows that he is equally adept at setting a story in an urban landscape by chronicling a landed sailor's attempt to become a self-taught writer, no easy task for a man who has lived the rough and vulgar life of a sailor. But Martin is extremely persistent in spite of all the obstacles he faces. Everyone including his friends, family, and classy girlfriend question his ability to make such a transformation from a nobody to a somebody. It's hard to imagine anyone being as devoted as Martin is to improving himself, and it's a bit intimidating seeing how much devotion it can take to achieve your dreams. Knowing that London used his own life story as a strong inspiration for Martin Eden, you expect that Martin will someday be successful, yet the results of all his work are still unexpected. With enough reading, learning, and life experiences, do we all eventually take Martin Eden's point of view? That's a question this book still has me thinking about months later.
A Masterpiece, Not to be Missed.......2006-07-18
I'll admit at the outset that I've not read anything by Jack London since high school days, until this book was recently recommended. I was astonished by the high quality of the concepts explored, clear prose, wonderful character development, and the unfolding tragedy of the plot. I was also amazed at how Jack London weaves the philosophical currents of the time with a frank appraisal of the realities of class divisions of East Bay (Oakland, California) society, together with their intellectual limitations, which clearly echoed those more often associated with the eastern United States.
One should know, fairly early on, where this novel is ultimately headed. But what holds our interest is the deeply insightful study of the consciousness of this aspiring intellect, aesthete, and writer in the process of becoming inspired, going through the darkness, ultimately finding empty triumph, paired exactly with his choice of an end.
While reading this book I thought a good deal of other works that explore the consciousness of writers and societal studies, such as those of more highly touted contemporaries in Joyce's Ulysses and Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, and even the often derided Henry Miller, who was a later master of the genre. I would imagine Miller was influenced by Martin Eden, but I have no evidence of that.
This book is well worth reading for anyone who wants to experience a young American novelist at the height of his powers. Highly recommended.
Best Jack London book........2006-03-18
Although many of Jack London's books incorporate facts from his life, this is by far the most intimate. It tells the tale of a man struggling to shape himself into a man worthy of the woman he loves. It is a beautifully written story that captures the essence of defining ones identity, and the price of changing it. It is a book everyone should be able to relate to.
Nearly a century old and still relevant.......2006-01-30
One of the great things about older, established literature is its ability to remind you that there's nothing new under the sun. Even though technology changes, human nature reamins the same. Martin Eden certainly reminds a modern reader of this fact. This is a cautionary tale of "be careful what you wish for" as well as a commentary about class envy in America. This is such a well-known novel that you can certainly find a concise synopsis elsewhere, so I'll just add this: in Martin Eden, London reminds us that success...and fame, in particular, looks great from the outside, but often leads to disillusionment for those that attain them. It's not a new theme, but his take on it is very engaging. He also makes a devastataing indictment of the American upper class by pointing out the hypocricy of their "learned" status, in which they learn many facts but are intelectually lazy, unable to construct their own original insights or posess true cuirosity about the way the world works. Martin's life is forever changed when he realizes that everything he's nobly struggled for -- education, social poise, recognition -- is simply a grand illusion.

Book Description
This book offers a modern treatment of diffusion in solids, covering such core topics as the transport of mass through the lattice of a crystalline solid. Part I of the book develops basic concepts in diffusion field theory and illustrates them with several applications, while Part II focuses on key solid-state principles needed to apply diffusion theory to real materials.
Customer Reviews:
A fine modern book on a good old topic at last !!!.......2005-08-20
To the curious minds of today and tomorrow:
I've recently gotten this book as a present and read a few chapters of it to date. As I am well versed in diffusion, I presume it's ok for me to comment on the book without having fully read it.
After reading a few chapters, and perusing over the entire volume, I was most impressed with Dr. Glickman's text. He's to be commended for having done a very fine job.
Diffusion is inherently a very mathematical subject. Yet, without a proper presentation of the important aspects of the physical phenomena it is barrren and simply reduced to solving partial differential equations. Glickman's book, seems to succeed at providing the physical picture of diffusion with utmost clarity, while maintaining mathematical rigor. Furthermore, it is up to date and exposes the reader to recent developments in the study of diffusion phenomena. The treatment is primarily on the phenomenology of diffusion. If you fancy to learn more about diffusion kinetics, I recommend the book by Khachaturyan (Theory of Structural Phase Transformations in Solids).
As someone who learned diffusion from Physical Metallurgy books, Shewmon's and Carslaw's books, I find Glickman's very refreshing for it's modern, rigorous and comprehensive.
I highly recommend it.
Cheers,
Dr. E.

Not a random walk............2003-02-25
...but a coherent and organized text on diffusion.
This is a complete text on the subject of diffusion. Similar to Shewmon's original "Diffusion in Solids", but Glicksman is more complete and modern. Glicksman is worth purchasing even if you already own Shewmon.
Finally, a complete explanation..........2000-04-06
I have found that mathematically intensive books frequently leave out many of the steps that are critical to a complete understanding of the fundamental equations. Diffusion in Solids does a wonderful job of taking you from start to finish in each problem presented. It is a complete tome worth every dollar spent. Thanks Marty!

Book Description
Whom, or what, does composition—defined here as an intentional process of study, either oral or written—serve? Bradford T. Stull contends that composition would do well to articulate, in theory and practice, what could be called "emancipatory composition." He argues that emancipatory composition is radically theopolitical: it roots itself in the foundational theological and political language of the American experience while it subverts this language in order to emancipate the oppressed and, thereby, the oppressors.
To articulate this vision, Stull looks to those who compose from an oppressed place, finding in the works of W. E. B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X radical theopolitical practices that can serve as a model for emancipatory composition. While Stull acknowledges that there are many sites of oppression, he focuses on what Du Bois has called the problem of the twentieth century: the color line, positing that the unique and foundational nature of the color line provides a fecund place in which, from which, a theory and practice of emancipatory composition might be elucidated.
By focusing on four key theopolitical tropes—The Fall, The Orient, Africa, and Eden—that inform the work of Du Bois, King, and Malcolm X, Stull discovers the ways in which these civil rights leaders root themselves in the vocabulary of the American experience in order to subvert it so that they might promote emancipation for African Americans, and thus all Americans.
In drawing on the work of Paulo Freire, Kenneth Burke, Edward Said, Christopher Miller, Ernst Bloch, and others, Stull also locates this study within the larger cultural context. By reading Du Bois, King, and Malcolm X together in a way that they have never before been read, Stull presents a new vision of composition practice to the African American studies community and a reading of African American emancipatory composition to the rhetoric and composition community, thus extending the question of emancipatory composition into new territory.

An exciting book! Filled with adventure and intrigue. A must book for anyone that enjoys reading about military adventures and the space program.
Customer Reviews:
A very interesting and enjoyable read!.......2004-04-13
Two super intelligent aliens ling among us, similar enough to humans to be breeding with us, have different goals when they decide to hide their identities and assimilate with mid-21st century American society. The US government knows about it and facilitates it. Why?
Martin Stab's suspenseful sci fi novel, Eden 459 will keep you up reading all night to find out. Stab's believable plot transports you through time and space as it weaves history, science, and a disturbing yet hopeful story line. A very interesting and enjoyable read!
Susan Morgan, author of Confluence, Love and Adventure in the Wild American West
Fate of the human race at stake!.......2003-09-28
The fate of the human race rests with those aboard the E-1 Spacecraft. Traveling to the distant planet Xenon, this multi-generational crew faces many challenges, including black holes, killer asteroids and hostile alien beings bent on destroying the E-1 and all aboard. The Characters in Stab's book leap off the page as we celebrate their joys and triumphs and commiserate their loses and failures. The story is a plausible tale about the future of space travel and intergalactic missions. This is good read, even if you're not a sci-fi fan.
Eden-459.......2003-08-01
If you like space fiction for novel ideas, Eden-459 is admirable leap into the world of intelligent sci-fi.
Fans of space-travel, Armageddon scenarios and alien conspiracy plots will enjoy this tale. Although the story doesn't gel until a third of the way into the book, this is a worthwhile first novel from author Martin J. Stab.
Stab, a former Air Force communications specialist and technical course writer, did his homework, researching black holes, space-time relativity, experimental propulsion systems and the potentially devastating effects of an island-sized asteroid impact in the Atlantic Basin. Interwoven threads like the Roswell Incident, mankind's ancestry, several well-publicized UFO sightings and even the mystery of Egypt's Great Pyramids deepen the plot.
Stab also breaks new ground: psychological implications of space-born offspring are adeptly raised. He leaves room for tantalizing interpretations, a line Stab could fruitfully pursue in his stated follow-up work. The unique spin on generation ships and the psychological pressures of a one-way space voyage are worth the price of admission alone. And most frighteningly, the chapters highlighting the severe consequences of a Near Earth Object impact seem too real, blockbuster movie heroics aside. Could we save humanity if it came to it? Would we even warn the populace if there was no possible salvation?
Stab spans 3 generations, several light-years, and an Earth-shattering doomsday scenario. A series of interesting climaxes go far to keep the reader involved in the outcome. The anti-climax on Planet Xeron is as ambiguously hopeful as protagonist Ellie Arroway's discovery in Carl Sagan's seminal Contact. What if mankind actually reaches out into the galaxy - and no one is there?
Character involvement and depth are minimally addressed in this novel, which may or may not present a problem for some readers. Fans of the Marion-Zimmer Bradley/Robert Heinlein-type sci-fi - i.e., those who want to tag along with their main characters and really get to the know them - will not love this book, while followers of the Asimov-Niven-Clarke style will feel right at home.
Just the Sci-Fi facts!.......2003-07-16
Martin J. Stab does have a way with a story, & he writes like a reporter--nothing fancy, just plain information, which comes off sounding quite authentic, if one dimensional.
Fantastic stuff, when you think about it, although I have a feeling hardcore Sci-Fi folks will find it a bit simple for their tastes!
A wonderful science fiction story.......2003-06-18
Eden 459 is a wonderful science fiction story that truly keeps your attention. Martin, a new intelligent author, created a story about life in outer space with exciting and unexpected twists and adventures. This book truly held my attention and I really hope a sequel is in the near future. You don't need to be a science fiction fan to read this book.

Book Description
God's Womb thoughtfully presents a new perspective of the world through a unique prism. The story of the Garden of Eden found in the book of Genesis is reinterpreted, and a compelling argument is offered, for the necessity of Adam and Eve to have matured from a fetus-like existence into full-fledged human beings, stripped of innocence, yet infused with free will. The Christian and Islamic perspectives on both the Garden of Eden and the human capacity for free will are also included, with an emphasis on how these attitudes can be compared and contrasted with that of their mother religion, Judaism. A work of contemporary religious theology results, serving as a novel vision that helps to clarify both the meaning and purpose of the existence of human life.
