This book is regarded as a classic, but the writing style is as soporific as can be. Some scientists should read Gamow or Feynman to learn that one can write a piece of work that's both authoritative and entertaining.

Excellent survey .......2007-07-02
This book provides a great survey of some recent advances in graph mining. When I started studying graph mining a few years back, there was no single book or reference to get a good introduction to the field. This book would have saved me some time in getting a firm grasp on the issues in graph mining.
The book provides the reader with a good introduction to the issues and different areas in graph mining. However, it does assume some familarity with graphs, and probably targeted at the level of postgraduate students. In addition, do not expect to obtain a thorough understanding of the field just from reading the book - its aim is to provide breadth, not to be a reference. Also, most of the contributions in the book is published work in conferences and journals, so can be obtained "free", if you organisation/institution you work at have access to the relevant publishers. Saying all that, I thorough recommend it if you are starting off in the field of graph mining, or just glad to be finally owning a graph mining book (like myself).

For instance, simple data can make an impact in a pie chart with overlaps of shadow or color, while complex information may demand more elaborate choices. Oh come on, it's not that bad.......2006-03-04
Because of all of the bad reviews on this book, I decided to borrow it from the library instead of buy it. It isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, and in fact, it's a rather useful resource.
Previous reviews claim that the author suggests the decorate diagrams and presentations with clipart and other garish techniques. Indeed, the author does suggest using symbols, colors, different stylistic techniques. However, he also tells the reader as often as possible, "Don't let the effects impede [the content]" and such. He states very often to use stylistic techniques such as 3D effects and symbols for clarity only if they will serve to add a level of information to the diagram that will facilitate understanding. In fact, he points out repeatedly in the section about how to make symbols - keep them stylistically consistent, keep them simple, keep them clear, and don't add any unnecessary accessories.
I think this book is a good resource as a methodical system of determining which type of diagram to display your information in.
Erk! I bought it!.......2005-04-29
Well, we all make mistakes - at least it is pretty in parts. A good guide to whether a restaurant chef can actually cook is to order an omelette simple - if it's on your table within a couple of minutes, the chef probably knows what he/she is doing. In the field of statistical graphics, finding out what the author thinks about pie charts is usually a good indicator - in this case, Mr Bounford seems to think they're a good idea, and he even thinks it's a good idea to add some chart junk, distort the information by rotation or to use fake 3D effects, use multiple colours and so on.
I guess a second indicator of quality is to check the index - has this man even read Tufte, Cleveland, Wainer? - it appears not.
This book is appalling!
If you like colouring-in with crayons, but need some guidelines, this is probably the book for you. Actually, if you are looking for new and interesting (read "brightly coloured") ways of mis-representing your data, or for transforming data into mis-information, again, this may be the book for you. Mr Bounford has invented some distortions that have not occurred to me even in my statistical nightmares!
I am, however, keeping my copy - it's a great teaching aid - on what not to do!
Great ideas for communicating with real people.......2004-05-17
I found this book to be a very useful resource for creating visually interesting informational graphics. I'm a technical communicator for a marketing-oriented company working in a number of different media, including print and web, and it is important to be able to attract and keep people's attention while conveying information. It may be that some of the methods provided in this book contradict E.Tufte's doctrines, but an ivory-tower nose-in-the-air approach ain't gonna move no product! Maybe I'm not a "serious Information Architect" -- That being said, I found the author's presentation and descriptions of the various types of charts and graphs helpful, and some of his layout ideas will be immediately valuable to me in my work.
A guide for what NOT to do.......2003-12-02
As an experienced information designer I bought this book with great hope. Unfortunately what I saw appalled me. This book turns many of the principles of designing good information graphics on their head. If you have read Ed Tufte's books and appreciate his concepts of reducing "chart junk" this book will astound you in actually suggesting you dress up a graph with pretty background graphics and cute icons.
Not only does this book present questionable aesthetic values, but even promotes the creation of misleading diagrams. One example is the suggestion to just make a 90 degree turn with a bar on a bar chart if that one doesn't fit conveniently.
There are so many bad examples in this book that it is almost useful as a guide for what NOT to do when designing charts and diagrams.
What you can do, not what you should do.......2002-09-21
A visually appealing book that shows off many digital effects and possible ways of creating digital diagrams. Whether or not you should do some of the things shown is another matter.
This book is not for the serious Information Architect - but may be useful for a designer or graphic artist.
Read Tufte and Wainer first - but then you won't find much new or useful here.

The First, Second and Third International Workshops “Mathematical Methods, Models and Architectures for Computer Networks Security” demonstrated the high interest of the international scientific community to the theoretical aspects of the computer network and information security and the need for conducting of such workshops as on-going series.
The proposed MMM-ACNS 2007 conference is intended as a next step in this series and will be focused on theoretical problems in the area under consideration.

This book presents the mathematics relevant to image understanding by computer vision and gives examples of actual applications. Group representation theory, Lie groups and Lie algebras, the theory of invariance, tensor calculus, differential geometry and projective geometry are used for three-dimensional shape and motion analysis from images, making use of techniques such as shape from motion, shape from texture, shape from angle and shape from surface. Although the mathematics itself may be well known to mathematicians, people working in areas related to computer science, image understanding, computer vision and image processing have usually never studied such mathematics, and so may be surprised to learn that abstract mathematical concepts can be of enormous help in building intelligent computer vision systems.

A Comic Masterpiece.......2005-05-24
Professors of literature are fond of writing that the three greatest novelists of the twentieth century are Marcel Proust, Thomas Mann, and James Joyce. In this, they could hardly be more in error. The only contender for the title of the greatest novelist of the twentieth or any other century is P.G. Wodehouse, farceur supreme, or, in plain English, an extraordinarily funny writer.
Wodehouse wrote novels and stories that can be easily classified into several series: there are the Bertie and Jeeves novels and stories, the Blandings Castle novels and stories, the Mr. Mulliner stories, the Uncle Fred novels, etc. The characters from one series rarely appear in another. This novel is an exception. Uncle Fred appears at Blandings Castle, where he poses as Sir Roderick Glossop, normally seen in the Bertie and Jeeves novels (and one story); indeed, he encounters Sir Roderick while traveling to Blandings Castle. Uncle Fred, properly, Frederick Altamont Cornwallis Twistleton, fifth Earl of Ickenham, is a man who "together with a juvenile waistline, . . . still retained the bright enthusiasms and the fresh, unspoiled outlook of a slightly inebriated undergraduate" at the age of sixty or so. It is he who sets in motion the events that enable young lovers to marry and his nephew Pongo to settle his gambling debts. In general, his role is that normally played by Lord Emsworth's younger brother Galahad.
Of course, any reader of Wodehouse novels knows at the start that things will turn out all right for any sundered hearts or frustrated lovers, as he knows that, any time the efficient Baxter appears, he will be discredited despite being thoroughly correct. The fun is in discovering just how it happens.
And what fun it is. Wodehouse's mastery of the English language is unrivaled. He succeeds in producing prose that not only is enjoyable in its own right but also moves events ahead at a pace that is nigh exhausting. In the Bertie and Jeeves novels and stories, it is Bertie's narration that does this. In this novel, it is the dialogue as much as the narration that moves events ahead, establishes the characters, and gives the reader immense pleasure.
My All-Time Favorite Book.......2002-11-07
This is my very favorite book, and I have been reading it about once a year for the past 15 years or so. I still laugh out loud at every reading. The very complex plot deals with Pongo Twistleton and his Uncle Fred, who visit Blandings Castle as imposters (Sir Roderick Glossip and his secretary, to be exact) in an effort to prevent the Duke of Dunstable from stealing the Empress of Blandings, Lord Emsworth's prize pig, and to keep him from smashing the drawing room furniture with the fireplace poker. Polly Pott (daughter of private investigator Mustard Pott) is also in attendance, pretending to be Sir Roderick's daughter. The story also involves the Duke's two nephews and their romantic problems: It seems Horace Davenport has hired a private investigator (none other than Mustard Pott) to tail his fiancee Valerie (Pongo's sister) and she has called off the engagement as a result, and Ricky's jealousy of his fiancee's attention to cousin Horace has landed him in the onion soup. Money won and lost at Persian Monarchs, the slipping of mickey's into people's drinks, and a Duke who throws eggs at people who whistle The Bonny Bonny Banks of Lock Lomand outside his window add to the hilarity. Of course, Mr. Wodehouse's unique turn-of-phrase doesn't disappoint in this delightful novel. I recommend this book to anyone who seeks diversion from reality. A must-read.

A complete Wodehouse fanatic, I would have trouble giving less that five stars to anything I have read so far. Uncle Fred is a particularly good one to add to the guest room bookshelf----incredibly funny and nice light reading for a few days away from home.
There is only one Wodehouse!.......2001-07-29
If you have ever read "Elements of Style" by Strunk and White (and if you haven't, then you should be legally prohibited from writing even so much as a thank-you note), then this book, like all Wodehouse books, is a perfect example of how to violate almost every rule in the book.
Consider the following: "The ninth Earl of Emsworth was a man who in times of stress always tended to resemble the Aged Parent in an old-fashioned melodrama when informed that the villain intended to foreclose the mortgage. He wore now a disintegrated air, as if somebody had removed most of his interior organs. You see the same sort of thing in stuffed parrots when the sawdust has leaked out of them."
How's that for failing to "omit needless words"? And how's that for vividly portraying the feeble-minded Lord Emsworth, one of Wodehouse's most memorable of his many memorable and hilarious characters?
The plot here is typical Wodehouse: a few love-stricken young people see their dreams of eternal wedded bliss threatened by either misunderstandings or lack of cash or both, and a young ne'er-do-well has run up some gambling debts, a circumstance which puts him in danger of some painful bone-crushing. Enter Uncle Fred, an aging playboy with a manipulative mind and a sense of adventure. He orchestrates a plan involving a visit to Blandings Castle (the Emsworth estate) which results in everyone living happily ever after.
But, of course, that plot outline is pretty much the plot outline of every Wodehouse novel. What makes it (and every Wodehouse production) a 5-star novel is the delicious phraseology, the preposterous and yet believable characterizations, and the continuous twinkle in the author's eye. You either "get" Wodehouse or you don't. If you don't, then go to a doctor and get it fixed immediately!
Excellent..........2001-03-20
P.G. Wodehouse has written this wonderful book about a pig, and love relationships (the author makes fun of the love relationships, nothing to worry about). In the beginning, it seems boring, but it speeds up after about 30 pages. Unlike other Blandings books where the hero is Galahad, in this story the protagonist is Uncle Fred. But it is the common Wodehouse theme where the Empress is kidnapped, and couples cannot get married because of the shortage of money. The funny things about his books are the way he plays with the character's personality. Beach-cold and calm. Empress-with a frown on her face tries to eat a bit of soap while locked in a bathroom. Mr. Wodehouse has a way with words when he describes the character's actions and he puts them in such a way that you laugh until tears pour down your cheeks. This is a really good book, and if you think it is boring in the beginning, stick with it for it becomes very funny. Enjoy!!!! Cheers!!!!! : )
