Book Description
Scan statistics are used in many areas of science and technology to analyze the occurence of observed clusters of events in time and space. The goal is to determine whether an observed cluster of events occurred by chance if it is assumed that the observed events follow a specified probability model.
Scan Statistics and Applications is a comprehensive, edited survey that brings together the work of leading authorities to present the most current advances in theory and methodology for this new area of statistical research and application. The chapters contain broad coverage of theory and new analytical and computational methods and techniques in four categories: introductory survey, discrete scan statistics, continuous scan statistics, and applications.
Features and Topics:
* Comprehensive introductory survey chapter
* Discrete scan statistics
* Finite Markov chain imbedding
* Continuous scan statistics
* Spatial scan statistics
* Applications in DNA sequence analysis
* Monte Carlo approaches to testing order statistics and spacing

nice coverage with reliability and medical applications.......2002-04-27
The actual title of this book is "Runs and Scans with Applications". Although patterns does not appear in the title, scans and runs can be viewed as particular patterns of interest in a sequence of binary outcomes. The authors have a good knowledge of both the theory and applications and present both very well without an overload of mathematics. They are also among the major contributors especially contributing articles of an applied nature in reliability and quality assurance testing. They use figures and graphs very effectively.
The runs test of Wald and Wolfowitz goes back to 1940 and is one of the early results in nonparametric statistics. A run of length k is a string of k successive events (often assumed to be independent)where the outcomes are identical (e.g. a run of ten heads in a row). A generalization of this is the occurrence of a scan of type k/m defined as a string of m or fewer outcomes containing k or more events of a particular type (e.g. getting at least 9 heads in a string of 12). A test that a coin is fair could be formulated as a runs or scan test. For a fair coin very long strings of heads or tails would be unusual and observing a long string of say heads might indicate that the coin is weighted to favor heads. Similar tests can be done with scans.
The value of these procedures has been that the distribution theory can be worked out and it can be determined under the null hypothesis what the probabilities are for long runs or how long one can expect to wait for the first run of length k when the null hypothesis is true. This is where the negative binomial distribution comes into the picture.
Many times the authors refer to the works of Sobel and Ebneshahrashoob and also occasionally Uppuluri and Patil. I had the great fortune of knowing and working with the late Ram Uppuluri when I was an employee of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the early 1980s. He introduced me to the power of recursion equations in solving problems involving moments of probability distributions and he pointed me toward the powerful tool of the Dirichlet integrals and probability distributions. In fact, Uppuluri along with Sobel and Frankowski published two volumes with tables useful in solving a variety of problems (especially waiting time problems) like the ones discussed in this text through the use of Dirichlet integals. Through Uppuluri, I also met Milton Sobel and later while living in Southern California I met Sobel's student Ebneshahrashoob at Long Beach.
Although their work is discussed in the text, the Dirchlet distribution is not emphasized and the tables are not even referenced. Also the key Chen-Stein ideas are mentioned and referenced but not elaborated on in the book. This I see as a minor shortcoming.
The author do what they set out to do. They introduce the subject in a manner accessible to practitioners and its many applications in a clear and convincing way. They include much of the imprtant literature both recent and historic.
Several books are coming out on this subject these days. It is a hot topic that is being revived because of the recent advances in genetics where scans and runs are useful in gene matching. As an example, check out "Scan Statistics" by Glaz, Naus and Wallenstein. They also have a nice book on this topic and have been major contributors as can be seen from the citations in the Balakrishnan and Koutras book.

Good, if a little boring..........2007-06-07
I'll admit that I have sort of been of two minds on The Red Pony.
You see, I was often pretty bored reading it. Not quite all of it, I guess. There were some really striking moments, such as the startling image at ending of the opening story and the gentle humor of the final story. But for long stretches, the storytelling was dry and predictable. It was a short book, so such long stretches were a bit of a problem. I can see why so many high school students have considered this a tedious read over the years.
My first impression of The Red Pony, however, wasn't the end of my reading experience. I finished the book one night, and during the next couple of days, I was driving alone for long stretches. And the book really stuck with me. Evidently, it hadn't been boring enough for me to forget it. As I reflected back on the stories, I was struck by the subtle wisdom of the book. How many books so well depict the longings and fears and frustrations of childhood? And, of course, it's not just about childhood. It works as a meaningful adult fable about how to live this strange existence when we're vaguely aware of our approaching deaths and don't know quite what to do until we get there. What does it mean to live lives in which dignity and meaning and hope are present? The Red Pony, it seems to me, takes some steps toward answering those questions.
So, ultimately, I do find it to be a worthwhile book, even though I doubt I'll be reading it again any time soon. It's not Steinbeck's finest; he was still working things out. But I'm glad I read it.

The Red Pony
By John Steinbeck
In The Red Pony by John Steinbeck, a boy named Jody is raised on a
ranch in California. Jody is really good at ranching. But nothing will
prepare him for this connection with Gabilan. Jody tends and trains his
horse every day so he can ride Gabilan someday, but when Gabilan falls
ill, Jody figures out there is a lot more he had to do with his horse
than what he had been doing.This book is not recommended, because there
is no real action in the book. An opinion of the book is that the author
needs to add more action to the book, like Jody meets someone and they
push him around and he has to go to the emergency room because the bad
friends hurt him. The only good part some people liked was that Jody
tried to jump in the middle of his shadow with every step, and the people
liked it because it looked fun and the other part I liked was that
Gabilan dies and Jody is going through a really rough time. Jody has to
try to deal with the fact that Gabilan died
Oh, John Steinbeck, why?.......2007-04-11
John Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. I love Of Mice And Men, East of Eden, and The Grapes Of Wrath. But this 4-part story of a a boy and a horse (which isn't even about the horse that much) is pointless drivel. I'll admit, I liked the first part of it, which is great and good enough to warrant two stars. The rest of it feels disjointed. I couldn't wait to get done with it.
It isn't a terrible book, but it isn't good at all. It's below average, and below average is not what I expect from the writer of Of Mice And Men.
From the sadness of death springs hope and purpose in life.......2007-04-04
John Steinbeck's The Red Pony is a deceptively simple "young reader's" book that blossoms into full life meaning when examined as an artfully presented novella. The brief 100-page work reads like a four-paneled painting which, viewed from the proper perspective, should be appreciated for what it truly is--a remarkable rendition of realism in 20th century American literature.
What to expect from the book: Expect four loosely connected short stories or vignettes, not a tightly woven epic plot. Expect crisp, articulate prose, without the extravagant detail, depth of characterization and flowing drama afforded by a longer work. Expect to experience thought-provoking, coming-of-age events in a young Salinas ranch boy's life, not the entertaining action of a Hollywood thriller. Also, expect to have to dig a little to understand the author's message, not to be spoonfed the theme of this unique work.
Here's my view of the thematic "glue" holding the individual stories together:
1. Boy learns about death: In "The Gift," 10-year old Jody learns through the sudden sickness, suffering and gruesome, buzzard-pecked death of his beloved red pony, Gabilan, that even "happy" gifts can result in sadness and loss, despite the best efforts of well-intentioned adults.
2. Boy views consequences of the ways of man: In "The Great Mountains," Jody sees how compassion has its economic and cultural limitations, when father refuses to honor the old paisano, Gitano's, request to live out his remaining years on the ranch where he was born. Consequence: Gitano disappears into the lonesome mountains towards the west, riding father's decrepit horse and ominously carrying only a sharp-bladed rapier.
3. Through loss comes hope: Against a gloomy backdrop of loss, "The Promise" builds hope but culminates in the harsh choice between life of birthing mare and her breech-positioned colt. The bittersweet outcome, death of the mare to save her colt, is difficult to accept but does offer at least a glimmer of optimism.
4. Despite life's trials and tribulations, its fullness arises from having a sense of purpose: The final story, "The Leader of the People," mentions neither the loss of Jody's red pony nor his presumed raising of the newborn colt. Instead, the connection to the other stories and unifying message of the novella can be found, in my opinion, within the final, almost trivial event: "Grandfather was about to refuse, and then he saw Jody's face," which led him to accept Jody's offer to make him a glass of lemonade. Importantly, through the simple act of accepting Jody's offer, Grandfather nourishes the boy's sense of purpose. Although Grandfather's own life purpose has withered since that unforgettable year decades ago when he led a group of settlers out west, the boy's life lies ahead with plenty of potential for a purposeful future.
In sum, out of death, and love, springs life's potential: When life has a purpose, however big or small--from caring for a pony to returning to one's birthplace to die, from being a leader of the people to making lemonade for a loved one--we not only live but thrive. The Red Pony is a sensitive affirmation of life--recommended reading for anyone willing to experience a little darkness before seeing light.
A Great Fill.......2007-02-14
Once again I am amazed that I completely missed out on the beauty of John Steinbeck's writing during my school years. How could my curriculum have bypassed an author with an incredible ability to draw his reader into stories with such fluidity and ease?
The Red Pony is a short novel broken into four parts centering on a young boy named Jody. Each part could be a stand alone short story, but collectively they tell the struggle of a boy maturing into adulthood on a farm in California during the Depression. On the surface the Red Pony is an example of one boys move from adolescence towards adulthood. Underneath, however, is Steinbeck's further examination of man's sense of belonging and purpose in the world. The depth and vastness of the world is dependent upon each character's understanding and his purpose in it.
It is Steinbeck's descriptions of nature that adds such a rich dimension to this story by having the characters views of the farm, mountains, animals....change with the mood of the story. I was absolutely lost in the beautiful descriptions of the farm and countryside that made up Carl and Billy Buck's world, and felt Jody's desire to expand that horizon into the mountains and beyond.
There seemed to be so much going on for such a short story that I felt full after reading it.

Book Description
"James Lee Burke tells a story in a style all his own, in language that's alive, electric. He's a master at setting mood, laying in atmosphere, all with quirky dialogue that's a delight." -- Elmore Leonard
In James Lee Burke's last novel featuring Billy Bob Holland, Bitterroot, the former Texas Ranger left his home state to help a friend threatened by the most dangerous sociopath Billy Bob had ever faced. After vanquishing a truly iniquitous collection of violent individuals, Billy moved his family to west Montana and hung out a shingle for his law practice. But in In the Moon of Red Ponies, he discovers that jail cells have revolving doors and that the government he had sworn to serve may have become his enemy.
His first client in Missoula is Johnny American Horse, a young activist for land preservation and the rights of Native Americans. Johnny is charged with the murder of two mysterious men -- who seem to have recently tried to kill Johnny themselves, or at least scare him off his political causes. As Billy Bob investigates, he discovers a web of intrigue surrounding the case and its players: Johnny's girlfriend, Amber Finley, as reckless as she is defiant -- and the daughter of one of Montana's U.S. senators; Darrel McComb, a Missoula police detective who is obsessed with Amber; and Seth Masterson, an enigmatic government agent whose presence in town makes Billy Bob wonder why Washington has become so concerned with an obscure murder case on the fringes of the Bitterroot Mountains.
As complications mount and the dead bodies multiply, Billy Bob is drawn closer to the truth behind Johnny American Horse's arrest -- and discovers a greater danger to himself and to his whole family. How Billy Bob strikes back at evil and protects his kin is the masterful triumph of In the Moon of Red Ponies.
Beautifully written, with an intriguing plot and characters whose conflicts seem as real as life itself, this novel shows James Lee Burke again in the top form that has made him a critical favorite and a national bestseller.

In the Moon of Red Ponies.......2006-07-31
The reader is hard to get used to, the story good, lot of twists and turns, keeps you interested.
Writing because he can.......2006-04-21
I've read just about everything Burke has written and this is one of the worst. The various parts just don't fit together and I found myself drumming my fingers and wishing it would just end. I suppose the good news is that it did. More and more the author has his main characters wallowing in self analysis and contemplating their navels at great length. If you like that you like it but there's too much of it for me. In addition the plot is kind of pasted together and imparts no belief that it could happen as written or that it makes sense. And the actions of the protagonist become increasingly tiresome. Enough.
Billy Bob and Temple just can't cut it.......2006-02-14
Having become a James Lee Burke junkie over the last year, I couldn't wait to read "Moon". What a disappointment. Billy Bob and Temple in Montana just can't compare to Dave and Bootsie in Louisiana! The action wanes when it needs to wax - and Cletus is no where around to spice it up. If you like the Bayou stories, I'm afraid the Bitteroot Mountains won't elicit quite the same reading anticipation.
Burke fans will like this one.......2006-02-07
I'm a huge fan of the always-on-edge Robicheaux, Clete Purcell and I'd even buy a book all about Batiste. (Listening J.L.?) Billy Bob Holland is another matter. More in the mold of a Former Action Guy who occasionally has his placid semi-retirement disturbed by miscreants, BB has to take action and show he's still got it. If you're spoiled on the constant action of the Robicheaux novels, Billy Bob might not be your cup o' tea. Then again, he might.
A good read........2006-01-15
Redemption of character is the theme in this novel. Billy Bob Holland is the unwilling participant in a plot that concentrates on a number of diverse characters, all of whom trying to redeem themselves in their own eyes.
The theme is a common one in Burke's books and one in which I enjoy. This novel is well-written and worth your time in purchasing.

it is really an interesting book that I likes to read. If u want the truth I hate reading but I likes this one . we read it in school and have an exam about it...in some ways I thought like IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO HAPPEN but it was totally great .
The style of writting is different and interesting........1999-05-27
I liked this book. It was alot better then other books I had to read. It was a book very easy to follow. I don't understand why it is called Th Red Pony, though. It really didn't have much to do with the pony, and I don't think that the title would symbolize anything else. Also, the author leaves big questionable gaps between the sections of the book. I don't understand why Steinbeck had to put Junius Maltby at the end of the book, too. The short story had nothing to do with the book. I really enjoyed it, though. It was kind of strange how things would just pop out of nowhere, like when the grandfather came to visit. I think the visitation of the grandfather was just to build more to the character's personalities. They all responded differently to his coming. Overall, I recomend this book to those interested in the farm-like way of life. This short story at the end of this book is similar to Huckelberry Finn. The boy, Robbie, is similar to Tom Sawyer. The schoolhouse scene reminded me of a scene in Huckleberry Finn.
