      Book Description

The combustion of fossil fuels remains a key technology for the foreseeable future. It is therefore important to understand combustion mechanisms, in particular, the role of turbulence within this process. This monograph presents a thorough introduction to the field of turbulent combustion. After an overview of modeling approaches, Peters considers the three distinct cases of premixed, nonpremixed, and partially premixed combustion, respectively. By demonstrating the current theories of turbulent combustion within a cohesive presentation, this book makes a unified contribution to engineering and applied mathematics.

The combustion of fossil fuels remains a key technology for the foreseeable future. It is therefore important that we understand the mechanisms of combustion and, in particular, the role of turbulence within this process. Combustion always takes place within a turbulent flow field for two reasons: turbulence increases the mixing process and enhances combustion, but at the same time combustion releases heat which generates flow instability through buoyancy, thus enhancing the transition to turbulence. The four chapters of this book present a thorough introduction to the field of turbulent combustion. After an overview of modeling approaches, the three remaining chapters consider the three distinct cases of premixed, non-premixed, and partially premixed combustion, respectively. This book will be of value to researchers and students of engineering and applied mathematics by demonstrating the current theories of turbulent combustion within a unified presentation of the field.

      Book Description

This Second Edition retains all the same primary objectives as the original text: First, to present basic combustion concepts using relatively simple and easy-to -understand analyses; and second, to introduce a wide variety of practical applications which motivate or relate to the various theoretical concepts. The overarching goal is to provide a textbook which is useful for both formal undergraduate study in mechanical engineering and in related fields, and informal study by practicing engineers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Combustion.......2007-01-01

I became acquainted with this book when it was used as one of several references for a graduate level mechanical engineering course in combustion. The book does an excellent job of explaining chemical equilibrium and chemical kinetics - particularly if the reader has very little previous exposure to these topics.

I would have liked to see more solved example problems but this is probably a desire of any student when using an engineering text.

This book is well written and presents much complex material for the non-chemist in a clear and concise manner. Those working with internal combustion engines will find the materials on pollutant formation (Chapter 15) very useful, including the 78 end of chapter references.

      4 out of 5 stars Readable.......2003-03-21

This book is used at UCLA for a senior mechanical/aerospace engineering course. I would only recommend it to someone interested in pursuing graduate level course work in combustion. Suggested Prereq: Heat & MassX, Fluids, Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Differential Equations (ODE, PDE, CPU).

      The good
It has good references to modern combustion sources/codes. good introduction to whats possible.

      The bad
A lot of derivations are made, but the equations arent solved, except for the trivial or ultra-simplified cases. So its not too useful for a practicing engineer.

      The ugly
He mispells prior as priori about 20 times, and refers to variable as rs. You dont know if it is r times s, or if it is multiple r's.

5 out of 5 stars An Introduction to Combustion : Concepts and Applications.......2000-12-29

An excellent introductory book on combustion. Suitable for an undergraduate course or for self-study. Fundamental concepts are clearly explained with many calculation examples and problems to solve. The material is presented in a very attractive and easy to read way. Also, has numerous references to webpages with useful information, plus computer programmes to solve basic problems, like equilibrium composition. The overall approach is to provide tools to make practical calculations using computational tools.

4 out of 5 stars a good cobustion course textbook.......2000-06-20

An appreciable attempt to cover the basics of all aspects of combustion science on a first comburtion-science course level, this book does manage to be very clear and structured, with good examples and clarifying illustrations, students of combustion science will find it a very helpful introduction. However, as many science books often are, it fails to present a synthetic view of this field, and the reader is left wondering if such a view is even possible, but the different chapters may serve those interested specifically in them.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Turns makes Combustion easy.......2000-06-17

I think Steve has abilities to convey scientific ideas in a simple, easy to understand manner. His interaction with industrial clients, industrial applications and combustion equipment has given him an insight for explaining basics as applied to the real world. He also understands utilities of various combustion properties, parameters and correlations. He also knows how you can apply it for the maximim benefit for a given process. I recommend this book to any practicing engineer in the combustion field. Steve is a great communicator and a friend of combustion industry. At Air Liquide I have used this book to design burners, flames and combustion processes for steel, glass, chemical and process industries. Sincerely, Dr. Mike Joshi, Combustion Scientist, Air Liquide, Chicago Research Center, Countryside, IL 60525

This survey of the current state of the art in computational models for turbulent reacting flows carefully analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the various techniques described. Rodney Fox focuses on the formulation of practical models as opposed to numerical issues arising from their solution. He develops a theoretical framework based on the one-point, one-time joint probability density function (PDF). The study reveals that all commonly employed models for turbulent reacting flows can be formulated in terms of the joint PDF of the chemical species and enthalpy.

It is shown that all commonly employed models for turbulent reacting flows can be formulated in terms of the joint PDF of the chemical species and enthalpy. Models based on direct closures for the chemical source term as well as transported PDF methods are covered in detail. An introduction to the theory of turbulent and turbulent scalar transport is provided for completeness. The book is aimed at chemical, mechanical, and aerospace engineers in academia and industry, as well as developers of computational fluid dynamics codes for reacting flows.

                    Book Description

The goals of the Symposium were to draw together researchers in turbulence and combustion so as to highlight advances and challenge the boundaries to our understanding of turbulent mixing and combustion from both experimental and simulation perspectives; to facilitate cross-fertilization between leaders in these two fields. These goals were noted to be important given that turbulence itself is viewed as the last great problem in classical physics and the addition of chemical reaction amplifies the difficulties enormously. This volume contains reviewed papers. The invited lectures considered the many challenges posed by adding one element to the base formed by others: turbulence and turbulent mixing in the absence of combustion through to turbulent mixing dominated by chemistry and combustion. The Symposium benefited from experimental, theoretical and computational contributions, which were focussed on either fundamental or more practical questions. Extensive discussions that followed each paper are included and add to the richness of the Proceedings. The Proceedings consider DNS, LES and experimental investigations of turbulence, turbulent mixing, diffusion dominated and pre-mixed combustion and thus will be of broad interest to all researchers active in these fields.

5 out of 5 stars Good Compendium of Miller's works.......2005-07-28

I wanted to read Death of a Salesman. While searching I found this book which has 5 of Miller's plays (including his famous ones, Death of a Salesman and The Crucible) and a few other little works of his. This is a great bargain, considering that a single play by Miller is about $9.00 and this is $12.00. A pretty good deal, if you ask me!

5 out of 5 stars This is the One!.......2005-03-22

If you're looking for one of Miller's plays, you get a number of bonuses here! It's a great collection.
