Better wavelet books out there.......2004-11-30
This book is divided into two sections: Time Frequency and Wavelets. Sadly, Shie Qian does not provide comprehensiveness in either subject, nor does he add to the knowledge base. I was expecting a more "cookbook" introductory approach to wavelets, but alas, for naught. To add insult to injury, there is not a hardcover version available to date. For shame.
My recommendations:
1. If you want to learn Time-Frequency analysis (windowed Fourier Transforms, Wigner-Ville ala Cohen's Class) -- download the Rice Time-Frequency Toolbox(for Matlab) and associated documentation. It's free, and the tutorials are outstanding. Not to mention, Qian seems to make liberal usage of it the book in question.
2a. For the electrical engineer, find a book that approaches wavelets by either branching off of Fourier Theory(provides a grounding in orthogonal, separable bases) or via subband coding(which correlates with the computation of wavelet transforms). Mallat's Wavelet Tour of Signal Processing is pretty good.
2b. For the math wiz(or those engineers with masochistic tendencies), find something with an angle on Riesz frames and bases. Avoid subband coding like the plague if you're not into block diagrams. A good start is Daubechies 10 Lectures on Wavelets, or anything through Birkhauser publishing.
An excellent book on signal processing.......2002-05-29
This book studies the two signal properties we are most interested in, time and frequency. Unlike other books, which usually concentrate on one topic of advanced signal processing, this book covers both time-frequency and wavelet analysis. The author organizes these topics in a clear structure with vivid English. The reviews at the beginning of every chapter are very
helpful for readers. Before I have this book, I read some mathematics books on wavelet analysis that were difficult to understand. The author explains the theories not only mathematically but also physically. Thus, this book gives me great help during my research on vibration and noise control,
modal analysis and acoustical signal processing. I strongly recommend this book to those who study signal processing.

A Friendly Guide to Time-Frequency Analysis.......2002-05-23
The aim of time-frequency analysis is to describe how the frequency or spectral content of a signal evolves. For engineers, scientists, and mathematicians, this self-contained book brings together the methods that have been developed to study time-varying spectra, and presents in simple language the physical and mathematical ideas, their origin and motivation, and the challenges of the field. The book is written clearly and well by a leading researcher
in the area of time-frequency analysis.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone
with an interest in the field of signal processing.
An excellent guide to time frequency and wavelet analysis.......2002-01-15
This book is very successful in setting out the uses of time frequency analysis and wavelet transforms, employing interesting examples of their applications throughout. Starting from a nice discussion of Fourier transforms, it develops an intuitively appealing presentation of time variant filters, the wavelet transform and the Wigner-Ville distribution. The mathematics is clearly presented without unduly simplifying the proofs or concepts involved. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the field of signal processing.

Introduction to Hilbert Spaces with Applications
ASIN: 0817641041 |
Book Description
The last two decades have produced tremendous developments in the mathematical theory of wavelets and their great variety of applications in science and engineering. Wavelets allow complex information, such as music, speech, images, and patterns, to be decomposed into an elementary form called building blocks at different positions and scales. The information is reconstructed with high precision. In an effort to acquaint researchers in applied mathematics, physics, statistics, computer science, and engineering and to stimulate further research, a regional research conference was organized at the University of Central Florida in May 1998. Many distinguished applied mathematicians and engineering scientists participated in the conference and presented a digest of recent developments, open questions, and unsolved problems in this rapidly growing and important field.
The carefully selected chapters in this new text will appeal to the reader interested in a broad perspective of wavelet analysis and time-frequency signal analysis.
Wavelet Transforms and Time-Frequency Signal Analysis brings together recent developments in theory and applications of wavelet transforms that are likely to determine fruitful directions for future advanced study and research.
The book is designed as a new source for modern topics dealing with wavelets, wavelet transforms, time-frequency signal analysis, and other applications for future development of this new, important, and useful subject for mathematics, science and engineering.
Topics and Features:
* Offers broad coverage of recent material on wavelet analysis and time-frequency signal analysis that is not covered in other recent reference books
* Provides the reader with a thorough mathematical background and a wide variety of applications that are sufficient for interdisciplinary collaborative research in applied mathematics
* Presents information that puts the reader at the forefront of current research
Wavelet Transforms and Time-Frequency Signal Analysis will serve as a research reference or as a text for an advanced course in wavelet analysis and time-frequency signal analysis. Professionals working on modern applied mathematics, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, physics, and biomedical engineering will also find this book useful.

In the summer and fall of 1942, American Marines landed on the South Pacific island of Guadalcanal and began the slow, bloody work of defeating the Japanese empire. Their landing was significant not only for the outcome of World War II, but also for the conduct of war ever since, for the invasion of Guadalcanal marked the first time that a combined air, sea, and land assault had ever been attempted. It is for that reason that tacticians and military historians study the months-long battle today, and their primary guide to that conflict is Richard Tregaskis's extraordinary Guadalcanal Diary.
A volunteer combat correspondent, Tregaskis braved much danger to bring the story of the fighting to American readers. But he was not one to celebrate his own exploits, and in the pages of his book, he centers on the brave young men from all over the United States who fought and died in appalling numbers. His attention to detail yields arresting descriptions of attacks and counterattacks, of moments of low morale and of exaltation, of moments of quiet behind the lines and of sheer terror at the very point of engagement. Tregaskis's style is unadorned and matter-of-fact, and his present-tense narrative places the reader in the thick of the battle during those "hopeless weeks."
The direct literary ancestor of books of military reportage such as Mark Bowden's Black Hawk Down and Michael Herr's Dispatches, Guadalcanal Diary is an exemplary work of journalism, and as vivid a portrait of men under fire as has ever been committed to print. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
history U.S.A. $14.95
Canada $22.50
This celebrated classic gives a soldier's-eye-view of the Guadalcanal battles--crucial to World War II, the war that continues to fascinate us all, and to military history in general. Unlike some of those on Guadalcanal in the fall of 1942, Richard Tregaskis volunteered to be there. An on-location news correspondent (at the time, one of only two on Guadalcanal), he lived alongside the soldiers: sleeping on the ground--only to be awoken by air raids--eating the sometimes meager rations, and braving some of the most dangerous battlefields of World War II. He more than once narrowly escaped the enemy's fire, and so we have this incisive and exciting inside account of the groundbreaking initial landing of U.S. troops on Guadalcanal.
With a new Introduction by Mark Bowden--renowned journalist and author of Black Hawk Down--this edition of Guadalcanal Diary makes available once more one of the most important American works of the war.
Customer Reviews:
Puts you on the Front Lines... .......2007-01-04
This is a gripping first-person account of the battle of Guadalcanal. War correspondent Richard Tregaskis describes landing with the marines on August 7, 1942, in what was the first U.S. offensive of World War II. Readers see how the intial island landings caught the Japanese napping, and the marines quickly grabbed the air field. But within days Japan launched furious counter attacks by land, sea, and air, leaving the battle's outcome and the survival of the marines in doubt. The author paints a stark picture of what the marines experienced - malaria, disease, and deadly combat in a steamy, jungle island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. And this battle occurred while the Allies were losing; Japan held half of China and much of the Pacific, while Nazi Germany had most of Europe, North Africa, and was battering the Russians near Stalingrad. Tregaskis left Guadalcanal in late September with the fight raging and unsettled, but by February of 1943 Japan withdrew and the marines had a key victory.
Richard Tregaskis (1916-1973) was a war correspondent who wrote easy reading copy. This was probably the most famous of his many war books, and it was soon adapted into a 1943 movie starring Anthony Quinn, William Bendix and Lloyd Nolan.
An enjoyable and important read...........2006-11-08
An outstanding piece of combat reporting written in an easy to read format. This gives the reader an insight into what the initial period of the campaign was like, from the front line!
This book is very difficult to put down and by drawing reference to the names of combatants and their home City and State brings the amazing exploits of our citizen soldiers to life.
Anyone with an interest on combat reporting, life in the front line of the South Pacific combat theatre or the battle of Guadalcanal should read this. Many of these veterans will soon be gone forever and this book is a worthy testament to their sacrifices.
Inspirational testimony of the Marines winning the battle that turned the war........2006-05-29
The Marines landed at Guadalcanal on 7 August 1942 and then withstood every counterattack the Japanesse could throw at them. The Japanesse Midnight Express made almost nightly runs to Guadalacanal. They land troops and supplies that were dispatched to destroy the Marines. To assist them the Japanesse navy conducted night bombardments and by day, they threw their airforce against the Marines. Reacting with the spirit of American's, the Marines withstood every attack. The Marines opened the airfield (Henderson) that the Japanesse had started. Marines Air (plus some army) then owned the skies. Then step by bloody step the Marines went onto secure the island. Guadalcanal was the decisive battle that turned the war.
I purchased this book in the Third Grade (it was my first ever book purchase). Richard Tregaskis's book inspire's me to always do more. I am still proud of the Marines (my dad was one) and the USA.
A classic WWII story.......2005-08-07
This was one of the earliest & realistic books about America's first offensive operation against the Japanese Empire during WWII.
While the book lacks in details in some places due to Wartime censureship. It still is a great book about our fight in one of the most hellish places in the world against one very tough foe & where we could not lose.
Too dated.......2005-04-08
It may have been a good book in its day, but is far too dated for a modern reader. There are many far more up-to-date type books about the war in the Pacific. The "Diary" is just that and gives too little detail about the actual battles or men who fought them. He states that there was a "bombing" or "strafing" by the Japs, but he gives no further detail. If you want an actual, detailed, first-person account of the many battles in the south Pacific, try "With the Old Breed" or "Into the Rising Sun". Both are excellent accounts of battles in the south Pacific during WWII.

EXCERPT: There was soft music, coming from the salon's speaker system. Tha, and the modern comfort and beauty of the place, brought the thought that this is a pleasant ship on which to travel to war, a sort of streamlined approach to an old adventure, even if there is no liquor behind the bar.

Book Description
On Friday, August 7, 1942, at 1300, after a furious cannonading by the Navy fighting vessels slamming salvo after salvo into the shores, 36-year-old Marine Sergeant Abraham Felber jumped from a Higgins boat onto Beach Red in the first-wave assault on the deadly jungle island of Guadalcanal. Felber was responsible for writing the Record of Events for his unit, and recorded in meticulous detail the fighting that wrested Guadalcanal from the enemy in the skies, off the shores, and in the muddy jungles.
This work is part of the diary that Abraham Felber kept during his service in World War II. It begins with January 7, 1941, and ends with December 31, 1945. As the 1st Sergeant of Headquarters Battery, 11th Marines, Felber dealt with both officers and enlisted men, which exposed him to the perspectives and insights of both. Felber was also granted the unusual privilege of taking photographs during the Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester campaigns, some of which are published here for the first time. Felber's accounts of his unit's role in the combat at Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester; his time at Guantanamo Bay, Parris Island and Camp Lejune; daily life, and other experiences are presented here as he recorded them.
Customer Reviews:
not very interesting.......2006-03-10
I just finished this book and compared to E. Sledge's With the old breed at Pelelieu and Okinawa, it is tedious and rather uninteresting. More time is spent by the author telling the reader what time they had chow than anything of major interest going on while he was at Guadalcanal, etc. Life in the rear echelon was, no doubt, tedious and boring, and this diary reflects that. I would not recommend this book to anyone unless they have nothing better to do some afternoon.
Made me feel realize more of what my Dad went through.......2005-09-20
My Dad was in the 1st Marine Division, also landing on Guadal Canal on August 7, 1942. Dad rarely talked about the war. I was a late-comer for my parents and was only 12 years old when Dad died in 1981, when he was 59. The year before he died, he started writing a journal of his war experiences, but didn't finish it. We also have an audio tape which my brother made interviewing him, but it, too, was unfinished.
Sgt. Felber's diary has helped me to realize things that Dad went through that I wasn't aware of --for instance the nearly constant rain. And, then there are some incidents that Dad mentioned, too, and it was exciting to see them in print!
Although it is a bittersweet journey to realize things Dad endured during the war, it also makes me feel even closer to him (although we were very close). I salute and thank you, Sgt. Felber for fighting for my freedom and for sharing your diary with us. God speed
Best Guadalcanal book I've ever read.......2004-02-10
I've read all the classic books on Guadalcanal, but this was the most detailed, most real, most gripping of them all. You can tell the author was there with the bombs falling and bullets flying because it was written while it was all happening.
There are some scenes that are just unforgettable, like when a private gets scared and shoots in the dark at what he thought was a Jap, but shoots a Sgt. Casey instead right through the chest. Then Casey's buddy needs to be restrained from killing the private.
Or when a Ranger didn't like an order he got from an officer, so he shot and killed the officer. Then another Marine pulled his pistol and killed the Ranger. Later on, the Marine who killed the Ranger ended up in a bloody fistfight with the author in the pitch black night over a grudge. They were swinging at each other without being able to see each other.
There are lots of historical notes that tie together what the author witnessed with what was going on all over the island. What's really impressive is that the author's account differs from the official Marine Corps account in a few places where it's clear that the author's account is the correct one.
The book has a lot more to it than just Guadalcanal. It covers from January 1941 through the end of 1945. The rest of the book is written just as well and is just as interesting as the part on Guadalcanal, but the part on Guadalcanal, which is the biggest section in the book, really rocks.
