    Book Description

Optimal control emerged as a distinct field of research only in recent decades. It provides a unified perspective of optimization problems, arising in scheduling and the control of engineering devices, that are beyond the reach of traditional analytical and computational techniques. In addition, the field has contributed significant advances to branches of applied mathematics and broad applications in process control, scheduling, robotics, resource economics, and other areas. Optimal Control brings together many of the important advances in 'nonsmooth' optimal control over the last two decades concerning necessary conditions, minimizer regularity and global optimality conditions associated with the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The book's development and analysis is largely self-contained and incorporates numerous simplifications and unifying features for the subjects' key concepts and foundations. Features and Topics: * a comprehensive overview is provided for specialists and nonspecialists * authoritative, coherent and accessible coverage of the role of nonsmooth analysis in investigating minimizing curves for optimal control * chapter coverage of dynamic programming *explains the necessary conditions for nonconvex problems * chapter coverage of the regularity of minimizers This new book is an essential resource for an authoritative and comprehensive presentation of the foundations and application of nonsmooth optimal control. Postgraduates, researchers and professionals in systems, control, optimization and applied mathematics will find that the book is accessible, provides a rich source of insights and offers clear exposition.

        Book Description

The book treats various concepts of generalized derivatives and subdifferentials in normed spaces, their geometric counterparts (tangent and normal cones) and their application to optimization problems. It starts with the subdifferential of convex analysis, passes to corresponding concepts for locally Lipschitz continuous functions and finally presents subdifferentials for general lower semicontinuous functions. All basic tools are presented where they are needed; this concerns separation theorems, variational and extremal principles as well as relevant parts of multifunction theory. The presentation is rigorous, with detailed proofs. Each chapter ends with bibliographic notes and exercises.

        Book Description

In the last decades the subject of nonsmooth analysis has grown rapidly due to the recognition that nondifferentiable phenomena are more widespread, and play a more important role, than had been thought. In recent years, it has come to play a role in functional analysis, optimization, optimal design, mechanics and plasticity, differential equations, control theory, and, increasingly, in analysis. This volume presents the essentials of the subject clearly and succinctly, together with some of its applications and a generous supply of interesting exercises. The book begins with an introductory chapter which gives the reader a sampling of what is to come while indicating at an early stage why the subject is of interest. The next three chapters constitute a course in nonsmooth analysis and identify a coherent and comprehensive approach to the subject leading to an efficient, natural, yet powerful body of theory. The last chapter, as its name implies, is a self-contained introduction to the theory of control of ordinary differential equations. End-of-chapter problems also offer scope for deeper understanding. The authors have incorporated in the text a number of new results which clarify the relationships between the different schools of thought in the subject. Their goal is to make nonsmooth analysis accessible to a wider audience. In this spirit, the book is written so as to be used by anyone who has taken a course in functional analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Clarke et al.'s Nonsmooth Analysis.......2000-03-29

Of all the scientific or mathematical books that I have reviewed or even read, I would place this book at the position of number one (1) in excellence, creativity, genius, inspiration, intuition, and usefulness. It has inspired some of my own best research and I often cite it in presenting papers at conferences and publishing papers. In my opinion, Nonsmooth Analysis is one of the 20 main research areas in mathematics of the last 5 years (others include rare events/large deviations, solutions of Navier Stokes/Einstein field equations/Schrodinger equation, fractals/chaos/entropy, fuzzy sets/fuzzy logic/multivalued logic/other logics, semigroups/Clifford algebras/spacetime algebras,etc.). Perhaps the most astonishing finding of Clarke et al., book here and in their journal papers (and those of their colleagues), is that equations become inequalities and subset relationships when one goes from smooth physics to disconnected and sharp-bend physics. The latter types of physics may seem difficult to visualize at first, but think of what happens when ice suddenly changes phase to water, or water changes phase suddenly to vapor/steam. Or think of what happens when a runner or a racecar or a plane suddenly makes a 180 degree about-face (runners might be able to do this, but planes can only do it approximately at usual speeds). Ordinary physics and mathematics cannot handle these situations. Other examples are catastrophes, sudden strokes of good fortune, etc. You can see that these are often related to rare events, which I have reviewed elsehwhere. It turns out that the usual mathematics which involves equations becomes inequalities (less than, greater than, etc.) and subset relationships (A is inside B or is a subset of B) in the new situations. Clarke et. al. prove theorems quite rigorously in this area. If you have any hesitation in reading this book because of its mathematical content, hire a reputable consultant or tutor to translate the results into an approximation to ordinary English. If you don't, you'll miss out on opportunities to apply the results to your own area and maybe even your own daily life.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent book.......2000-03-26

In general, we assume the differentiability of functions. But this is the very strict assumption and nondifferentiable phenomena are common. So if you want to drop the assumption of differentiability, I'm convinced that you have to read this book. This is one of the best books.

          Book Description

This volume brings together internationally recognized authorities in both geometric and nonsmooth analysis methods in optimal control and its applications. The topics covered include geometric and nonsmooth analysis techniques in various problems of optimal control, and stabilization for nonlinear dynamical systems governed by ordinary and partial differential equations and differential inclusions. The powerful mathematical techniques that have been developed in deterministic optimal control theory make it possible to derive more detailed information about the structure of solutions then could have been obtained in the past. This volume addresses this topic as well as supports new algorithmic approaches to the calculation of solutions. This volume is suitable for mathematicians and students.

          Book Description

This book provides a complete and unified treatment of deterministic problems of dynamic optimization, from the classical themes of the calculus of variations to the forefront of modern research in optimal control. At the heart of the presentation is nonsmooth analysis, a theory of local approximation developed over the last twenty years to provide useful first-order information about sets and functions lying beyond the reach of classical analysis. The book includes an intuitive and geometrically transparent approach to nonsmooth analysis, serving not only to introduce the basic ideas, but also to illuminate the calculations and derivations in the applied sections dealing with the calculus of variations and optimal control.

Written in a lively, engaging style and stocked with numerous figures and practice problems, this book offers an ideal introduction to this vigorous field of current research. It is suitable as a graduate text for a one-semester course in optimal control or as a manual for self-study. Each chapter closes with a list of references to ease the reader's transition from active learner to contributing researcher.

            Book Description

This edited book contains selected papers presented at the Louisiana Conference on Mathematical Control Theory (MCT'03), which brought together over 35 prominent world experts in mathematical control theory and its applications. The book forms a well-integrated exploration of those areas of mathematical control theory in which nonsmooth analysis is having a major impact. These include necessary and sufficient conditions in optimal control, Lyapunov characterizations of stability, input-to-state stability, the construction of feedback mechanisms, viscosity solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, invariance, approximation theory, impulsive systems, computational issues for nonlinear systems, and other topics of interest to mathematicians and control engineers. The book has a strong interdisciplinary component and was designed to facilitate the interaction between leading mathematical experts in nonsmooth analysis and engineers who are increasingly using nonsmooth analytic tools.

When Alex-Li Tandem is 12 years old, his father takes him and his friends Adam and Rubinfine to a wrestling match at the Albert Hall in London. By the end of the evening, the pivotal events of Alex-Li's youth have occurred: he has met Joseph Klein, a boy whose fascination with autographs proves infectious; his friendships with Adam and Rubinfine are cemented; and his father has dropped dead. This is enough action for an entire book, and in fact things slow down dramatically after page 35 of Zadie Smith's sophomore novel The Autograph Man. When we meet Alex again, he is a grown man, an autograph dealer and devoted slacker, suffering the physical and spiritual after-effects of a three-day romance with a drug called "Superstar." While under its malign influence, Alex has managed to wreck his sports car, alienate his girlfriend Esther, and--possibly--forge the rare autograph of his idol, the 1950s movie star Kitty Alexander. Will his friends save him from the embarrassment of trying to sell this suspect autograph? Will they pull him together in time to perform Kaddish on the 15th anniversary of his father's death? Although not as enthralling or politically resonant as White Teeth, Smith's hallowed debut, The Autograph Man amply demonstrates her ability to juggle several main characters, several themes, and a host of plots and subplots, with the occasional purely comic episode thrown up in the air beside them like a chainsaw or a cheesecake. Readers will want to step away to a safe distance during the chaotic final scenes. --Regina Marler

                Book Description

Alex-Li Tandem sells autographs. His business is to hunt for names on paper, collect them, sell them, and occasionally fake them—all to give the people what they want: a little piece of Fame. But what does Alex want? Only the return of his father, the end of religion, something for his headache, three different girls, infinite grace, and the rare autograph of forties movie actress Kitty Alexander. With fries.

The Autograph Man is a deeply funny existential tour around the hollow trappings of modernity: celebrity, cinema, and the ugly triumph of symbol over experience. It offers further proof that Zadie Smith is one of the most staggeringly talented writers of her generation.

                4 out of 5 stars I'm a Zadie Smith Fan. So Don't Trust Me........2006-07-08

I understand why people dislike this book. I understand why it is barely mentioned when Smith is introduced at whichever speaking engagement. I understand why the reviews on this site are largely negative.

And still, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I rather liked Alex Li-Tandem. He's not readily likable. But still, I liked him anyway. I liked his weakness. His obsession. His self-indulgence. And his passion. I liked Alex Li-Tandem in much the same way that we like (and love!) real life human beings who aren't always readily likable.

Then too, I liked Esther and Adam and most of Alex's friends. And not in the way that you like people because they're friendly and funny and gregarious and fun. No. I liked them in the way that you like people who are flawed and a little nuts and even a little ridiculous at times. But you like them in the context of their relationships with others and because they are flawed but continually keep on trying.

To be fair, I'm a huge Zadie Smith fan. I'm sure the strength of her writing and my faith in her wit had a lot to do with why I was able to keep reading through the duller moments of the book.

"The Autograph Man" is not easy. And justifiably, many will not like it. But for the handful of us who do, it is truly a gem.

2 out of 5 stars Too many repititions..........2006-04-26

I am halfway through this book and I am already so annoyed by the references of "international gesture"...the first two three times it was somehow funny...I am now on page 164 ..and she still keeps on using it..that is quite a turn off...repeting stuff over and over again...also, why does she has to refer to the singers always as "the popular singer John Lennnon", "the popular singer Leonard Cohen"....small details like this made me quite annoyed while reading the book...and most of the jokes are not really that funny...I think it is still readable...but I must say that I have to put some effort to finish it....

1 out of 5 stars You really wanna get bored...?.......2005-11-14

Read this book! The story of a half-Chinese, half Jewish halfwise autograph man, a drunkard and drug addict who doesn't get along with life, love and religion, sadly isn't even half-interesting or - behave - intelligent. In fact it is really annoying: the initial situation offers some some basic aproaches but Zadie Smith doesn't manage to develope them thrillingly. Anytime I felt just a little bit of excitement and turned the page to read on, it just started to get really boring again.

4 out of 5 stars and now for something completely different.......2005-11-14

Was it DH Lawrence who said we tend to have a good impression of fat books simply because we are proud of having managed to finish them? Mabye that is why I have come to like this book, althouth I can understand very well why so many people here are annoyed with it. The protagonist seems to be a blank at first, and he behaves in a thoroughly annoying way throughout the book. And not all of Zadie Smith's ideas are brilliant. But at least she has some ideas of her own.
And she can write. Nobody here denies that. There is real substance to her style. Shouldn't that be enough to make you trust her?
As soon as you do, you will se things in a different light. Alex's friends are ready to forgive him, so maybe we should be too. They were there when his father died. They know that was the defining moment of his life. It explains why he loves films so much: They seem to be a universe of eternal life where nobody can ever die.
Of course somebody who prefers films to real life will get in trouble. And most readers don't want to read about people like that. What's more, most of the other characters in the book are at least as crazy as Alex: You'd expect autograph men like Ian and Brian to be deranged, but are there really rabbis like Rubinfine? Or people like Adam who mix up Judaism and smoking weed into a religion of their own? Maybe not. If you don't like eccentrics, stay away from this book. But I am grateful for having come across characters like Marvin the milk operative.

1 out of 5 stars Interesting book if you want to fall asleep suddenly!.......2005-11-14

In the first part of her novel, Zadie Smith manages to create a strong aversion against the drug-addicted protagonist Alex-Li Tandem. The fact, that there was nearly no plot makes it difficult for the reader to concentrate in staying interested in the book.
Alex-Li is very creative when it comes to drug-consuming, e.g. when he drinks the alphabet, but most of the time he is just annoying and unable to have a normal relationship with his girlfriend Esther. He is not interested in Esther's illness at all because all that counts for him is Kitty Alexander, an ancient film diva he is the greatest fan of.
All the other characters in the book aren't interesting, either.
The ordinary reader can't understand all the allusions to the jewish religion, to Buddhism and to movies nobody knows.
The end isn't a real end, it's more disappointing than the rest of the novel.

By a strange coincidence in life Alex-Li is a half Asian half Caucasion of Jewish Religion. As a teenager, during the visit to a wrestling event with two other friends he meets another boy who opens to him the world of autograph collecting. Unfortunatley that same day his father days of a heart-attack.
Years later Alex-Li is a professional autograph collector and carries a completely chaotic life. He is still surrounded by the same friends of that day. All three try to make their own strides in life with some regular (Call-center employee at an insurance) to uncommon jobs (rabi), as usual they know better what Alex-Li should do than himself. There is Esther, the sister of one of Alex-Li friends who whorships Alex-Li and is his unregular love. In his profession Alex-Li meets a wide range of strange people, who are colourful characters on its own.
The big dream of Alex-Li is to get an autograph of an old Hollywood star named Kitty Alexander... When one day an autograph of her appears in the kitchen confusion reigns and the origin of the autograph remains a mistery.
A trip to New York will become crucial to solve this mistery while paranoia increases when the celebration of the anniversary of Alex-Li's father comes closer...
Zadie Smith brings us once again a complex environment where quite good developed characters have their affairs. It takes a while to get used to the rythm of the novel, and probably the novel would be better when she would not try to link so many complex relationships and digrssions and let the story and its characters flow.

Reading the first book of "The Autograph Man" is most of the time very annoying. The protagonist of the story, Alex-Li Tandem, a half chinese half jewish autograph man gets drunk and stoned every day, consequently there is no real action. In the secon part of the book there is some kind of a plot, the story beginns to develope and so it gets more interessting for the reader. The open ending is a bit disappointing because the reader doesn't know how the life of Alex will go on. All in all the book contains too much unimportant details and the protagonist is a kind of a person you can't identify with nor you can like him anyway. If you have the power to finish the book you really can be proud of you!!!

                      1 out of 5 stars very fractured.......2005-10-17

After reading 50 pages and restarting every so often in case I missed something prior, I gave up. Makes no sense, no connection, seems to be just a series of rambling unrelated phrases, sentences. I hope to read "White Teeth" and hope it will be more interesting.

4 out of 5 stars The quest for the holy Grail.......2004-10-22

What is wrong or good with this book. What are the relations between main character, what is the main plot, or any of the other subplots, what is that that Zadie smith is trying to do. Questions, which vary in answers. Depending on the viewpoint of person who writes them. I'll do my best to try and summarise it shortly. Alex Li-Tandem, jew and chinese in same person. Weehaw, that, you could think, presents an excellent starting point for a story about hate, rasisim, justice that is no justice at all and standard post-modern pro-cultural prose. But, what we actually find here is, I do not know how to phraze it, but something which bears much resemblance with a intimate search fore onself. Lookin ag the religion as just some sort of gest, Aley li Tandem, finds his religion in much more mundane thing, autograph collecting, with Kitty Alexander in a role of her life as Jehova. Neglecting anything but that, his "social" and/or intimate relationships suffer greatly.
With few excurses with a jokes, or anegdotes, with pictures now and then that helps to break boredomness of every written text, Smith's managed to write very compelling story, and much thought provoking one.
Maybe somwhat too playfull for a matter that it tried to bring up to the light of day, this book stands for itself as a beacon to every young writer or independent thinker out there (sorry about typos, i have a very bad keyboard here :))

3 out of 5 stars Looking For Spirituality in All The Wrong Places.......2002-11-12

Zadie Smith's latest is a subpar Coupland-ish tale of a young man avoiding relationships and meaningful spiritual fulfillment through frivolous pursuits and binge drinking - sort of like most mid-twenty-somethings. There are a few good moments and a few witty lines in the book, but ultimately the tale just doesn't have much ooomph. Coupland's last book just came out in paperback and it's a better read. If you can get your hands on a copy of Dave Eggers latest book it's even better. If you are interested in young voices and you've already read those, you might still want to check out this quick read.
