Book Description

This book is aimed at those readers who already have some knowledge of mathematical methods and have also been introduced to the basic ideas of quantum optics. It should be attractive to students who have already explored one of the more introductory texts such as Loudon's The quantum theory of light (2/e, 1983, OUP) and are seeking to acquire the mathematical skills used in real problems. This book is not primarily about the physics of quantum optics but rather presents the mathematical methods widely used by workers in this field. There is no comparable book which covers either the range or the depth of mathematical techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Review of "Methods in theoretical quantum optics".......2001-10-18

I find this book really excellent. It gives a masterly
written introduction to all the most fundamental mathematical
methods in quantum optics. The concepts are introduced very
carefully, all the passages are explained in full detail, and
the discussion is very thorough throghout the book.
The authors gradually and clearly introduce the main
mathematical objects always relating them to basic
interactions and physical situations.
Special care is dedicated to the discussion of the basic
quantum states, number, thermal, coherent and squeezed.
Atomic coherent states and multimode extensions are discussed
as well. In each instance, simple Hamiltonian models
giving rise to the fundamental quantum states are
introduced and analysed in detail; among others,
I find excellent the detailed analysis devoted to the Jaynes--Cummings model, the beam splitter,
and the squeezing Hamiltonian.
Quite a substantial part of the book is dedicated
to the discussion of the statistical properties of the
electromagnetic field, in particular the
characteristic functions
and their associated quasiprobability distributions.
I believe that this book will be very useful both as
an introductory textbook for graduate and advanced
undergraduate students, as well as a reference book
for professionals working in the field of quantum optics
and basic quantum mechanics.

    Book Description

The book provides an introduction to the methods of quantum statistical mechanics used in quantum optics and their application to the quantum theories of the single-mode laser and optical bistability. The generalized representations of Drummond and Gardiner are discussed together with the more standard methods for deriving Fokker--Planck equations. Particular attention is given to the theory of optical bistability formulated in terms of the positive P-representation, and the theory of small bistable systems. This is a textbook at an advanced graduate level. It is intended as a bridge between an introductory discussion of the master equation method and problems of current research.

      Book Description

Statistical Methods in Quantum Optics 2 - Non-Classical Fields continues the development of the methods used in quantum optics to treat open quantum systems and their fluctuations. Its early chapters build upon the phase-space methods introduced in the first volume Statistical Methods in Quantum Optics 1 - Matter Equations and Fokker-Planck Equations: the difficulties these methods face in treating non-classical light are exposed, where the regime of large fluctuations – failure of the system size expansion – is shown to be particularly problematic. Cavity QED is adopted as a natural vehicle for extending quantum noise theory into this regime. In response to the issues raised, the theory of quantum trajectories is presented as a universal approach to the treatment of fluctuations in open quantum systems.

This book presents its material at a level suitable for beginning researchers or students in an advanced course in quantum optics, or a course in quantum mechanics or statistical physics that deals with open quantum systems. The text is complemented by exercises and interspersed notes that point the reader to side issues or a deeper exploration of the material presented.

      Book Description

The Handbook of Stochastic Methods covers systematically and in simple language the foundations of Markov systems, stochastic differential equations, Fokker-Planck equations, approximation methods, chemical master equations, and quatum-mechanical Markov processes. Strong emphasis is placed on systematic approximation methods for solving problems. Stochastic adiabatic elimination is newly formulated. The book contains the "folklore" of stochastic methods in systematic form and is suitable for use as a reference work.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but van Kampen is better.......2007-07-14

"Handbook" is a fitting title. It reads more like a collection of solution techniques than like a book meant to actually teach the subject to someone, which is perfectly acceptable for a reference book but not really suitable for a textbook.

Unfortunately for this book, however, van Kampen's book is better as both a reference and a textbook. While generally written with a somewhat higher degree of sophistication, van Kampen is organized so much more logically and is so much more complete in its development of the subject that it is far easier to read, even as (or maybe especially as?) an introductory book.

Gardiner is a good book, and there are things that it has over van Kampen: a chapter on approximation methods, a chapter on simulation methods, and a little bit more detail on certain topics. However, van Kampen's is a phenomenal book and really should be chosen over this one except by those readers with very specific needs.

5 out of 5 stars A fresh perspective on stochastic processes.......2003-09-11

This is a great book on stochastic processes. The author has a unique perspective on the subject and elegantly moves from one topic to the next. A great help in understanding difficult concepts.

5 out of 5 stars A very important book in th area.......2000-05-12

This is a great book. The different chapters are very clearly written and each of them could be applied as a tool for solving similar problems, one may encounter in his (hers) research. Although the text is not introductory, with some effort, the reader could avoid going through more elementary books on the subject first.

        Book Description

This book provides an accessible introduction to the mathematical methods of quantum optics. Starting from first principles, it reveals how a given system of atoms and a field is mathematically modelled. The method of eigenfunction expansion and the Lie algebraic method for solving equations are outlined. Analytically exactly solvable classes of equations are identified. The text also discusses consequences of Lie algebraic properties of Hamiltonians, such as the classification of their states as coherent, classical or non-classical based on the generalized uncertainty relation and the concept of quasiprobability distributions. A unified approach is developed for determining the dynamics of a two-level and a three-level atom interacting with combinations of quantized fields under certain conditions. Simple methods for solving a variety of linear and nonlinear dissipative master equations are given.

          Book Description

Scientists in optics are increasingly confronted with problems that are of a random nature and that require a working knowledge of probability and statistics for their solution. This textbook develops these subjects within the context of optics using a problem-solving approach. All methods are explicitly derived and can be traced back to three simple axioms given at the outset. Students with some previous exposure to Fourier optics or linear theory will find the material particularly absorbing and easy to understand.
This third edition contains many new applications to optical and physical phenomena. This includes a method of estimating probability laws exactly, by regarding them as laws of physics to be determined using a new variational principle.

            Book Description

As the Japanese military invades 1930s Manchuria, a young girl approaches her own sexual coming of age. Drawn into a complex triangle with two boys, she distracts herself from the onslaught of adulthood by playing the game of go with strangers in a public square--and yet the force of desire, like the occupation, proves inevitable. Unbeknownst to the girl who plays go, her most worthy and frequent opponent is a Japanese soldier in disguise. Captivated by her beauty as much as by her bold, unpredictable approach to the strategy game, the soldier finds his loyalties challenged. Is there room on the path to war for that most revolutionary of acts: falling in love?

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story .......2007-06-22

This novel is perhaps the most sophisticated, sensual, tragic, uplifting, and horrifying examination of the experience of love that I have read. The complexity of emotions in the awakening womanhood of a teenaged Chinese girl at the onset of China's "War of Resistance" against Japan in the 1930s, as well as the poetic quality of the author's prose, at least in the original French version, make this a novel to remember and to reread. The tale of the heroine, Night Song (Chant de nuit), whose name appears only on the next to last page, is paralleled by that of the young Japanese army officer of samurai origin, whose uncritical acceptance of his nation's wartime imperialist outlook is put to the test when he must suddenly and unexpectedly choose between an act of terrible bestiality and one of transcending humanity.

            2 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing.......2007-04-09

As a reasonably strong amateur Go player(3 kyu), I found the author's usage, and knowledge, of the game very limited. The gameplay could have been used to give more insight into the two main characters and their relationship, but instead was used only as a plot device to bring them together. I also did not like the girl, who came off as selfish and immature; the Japanese soldier's side of the story was more compelling. Because of the constant switching between perspectives, the narrative becomes a little disjointed, but the major problem is the florid writing. The shockingly brutal ending was suitably dramatic, however, and redeemed the book for me a little. If you like overheated romances set in WWII China, then this isn't a bad read. Everybody else can probably pass.

3 out of 5 stars War and Love.......2006-07-17

I didn't enjoy this novel, partly because it is about war - extremely ugly war between the Japanese (invaders) and the Chinese (victims) - how could people ever behave like this towards other people? - but also because the love scenes read like war to me (such the young Chinese girl and her lover) - how could people ever behave like this towards other people (and submit to it!).

As a go player (very amateur) myself I was both disappointed and comfortable about the way the game is used in the novel. Disappointed because there wasn't much really about the game, but comfortable for the fact that the game was perhaps one of the few things that could draw the Japanese (who had adopted the game) and the Chinese together.

But, like the young girl's acceptance of sex and management of its outcomes - all gruesomely described - fate plays an inexorable part in the resolution of the novel.

5 out of 5 stars Japanese/Chinese History as seen through the eyes of the participants........2006-03-04

This is an outstanding novel of the Japanese occupation of Manchuria in the early 1930s, through the eyes of a high school aged Manchurian girl (The Girl Who Played Go) and a Japanese officer (whom she played Go with, not knowing that he was a Japanese officer stationed in Manchuria}. The officer was involved in actual missions against insurgents from time to time. The story is interesting from a factual historical point of view, even from the mindset that led to the estblishment of the "Comfort Women" as an officially sanctioned Japanese policy. The historical aspect is enlightened by the complex human relationships of the two main protagonists. The novel brings to light the personal contradictions of the two also;their human relations; the national pride of each; the loneliness of their circumstances; and finally the heroic actions of each that ends in mutual tragedy. The story reminded me to a degree of the story of Romeo and Juliette; though they never professed love for one another verbally, their actions implied that affection between them was possible.

I would definitely recommend it as a must read. The style is also intriguing as the two and three page chapters switch back and forth among the protagonists, both in real time and in flashbacks of times past that were happier and led to the developed personalities of the present.

5 out of 5 stars Heart shattering..windswept descriptions of love, loss and war.......2006-01-20

well it goes over quickly, but not painlessly. she spares you no descriptions. she lays all her pieces out on the table and the it ain't a pretty picture. this is back when Japan invades Manchuria. a japanese soldier acting as spy, goes down to a local Go playing park and plays against a young manchurian girl. supposedly through the playing of GO the come to know each other, though they never speak. the descriptions of Japanese treatment of the manchurians and the rebellion are heartbreaking and painful. this is not a happy story. but a powerful and original one.

In war-torn Manchuria of the 1930s, two lives briefly find peace over a game of go in Shan Sa's third novel, The Girl Who Played Go (translated by Adriana Hunter). The unnamed characters, a Japanese soldier stationed in China and a 16-year-old Manchurian girl, narrate their stories in alternating first-person chapters. For the girl, the struggles of Independent Manchuria take a back seat to her discovery of love and the awakening of her sexuality. For the soldier, his idealized dreams of samurai honor and imperial conquest are slowly displaced by homesickness, troubled recollections of his earthquake-torn youth, and remorse over a lost love. But the solitary concerns of each character are eventually submerged by the tides of war. The girl's first lover, Min, is a revolutionary. His ardor for his virgin conquest is matched by a doomed patriotism. Simultaneously, the soldier comes to relish the girl's home town, Thousand Winds, in Southern Manchuria, and becomes distrustful of his own nationalism. His daily games of go with the young female stranger awaken a new passion in him that becomes entwined with admiration for her aggressive play.

As they hardly speak, the soldier and the girl's views of each other remain clouded in Sa's technically facile narrative maneuvers. Where the soldier sees love, the girls sees escape. By maintaining the first person, Sa (winner of the French Prix Goncourt du Premier) leads the reader not only to experience the Japanese and Manchurian perspectives of the occupation, but also she offers glimpses into the deep failure inherent in cross-cultural and cross-generational communication. Couple with the rich historical detail, Sa's narrative games reward close reading amidst the briskly paced spiral into tragedy. --Patrick O'Kelley

            Book Description

In a remote Manchurian town in the 1930s, a sixteen-year-old girl is more concerned with intimations of her own womanhood than the escalating hostilities between her countrymen and their Japanese occupiers. While still a schoolgirl in braids, she takes her first lover, a dissident student. The more she understands of adult life, however, the more disdainful she is of its deceptions, and the more she loses herself in her one true passion: the ancient game of go.

Incredibly for a teenager–and a girl at that–she dominates the games in her town. No opponent interests her until she is challenged by a stranger, who reveals himself to us as a Japanese soldier in disguise. They begin a game and continue it for days, rarely speaking but deeply moved by each other’s strategies. As the clash of their peoples becomes ever more desperate and inescapable, and as each one’s untold life begins to veer wildly off course, the girl and the soldier are absorbed by only one thing–the progress of their game, each move of which brings them closer to their shocking fate.

In The Girl Who Played Go, Shan Sa has distilled the piercing emotions of adolescence into an engrossing, austerely beautiful story of love, cruelty and loss of innocence.

5 out of 5 stars very good, very sad.......2006-08-20

I started reading this book because I play Go. I kept reading the book even after I figured out that it doesn't talk about the moves in detail because it's a damn good book. I'm one of those people that is always thinking about where other people around me have been. The idea of two people from such different lifestyles coming together and playing Go without speaking to each other about themselves tantalized me. I could put myself in the girl's place. I could put myself in the man's place. This book made me no better at Go, but it touched my heart. It made me cry and smile and quote passages aloud to friends. A good read for Go players, students of Japanese or Chinese culture, soldiers (or veterans of course), students of the Pacific War, people in love, and practically everyone else as long as they don't mind a very sad ending.

            5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put the book down........2006-06-22

Yesterday I read The Girl Who Played Go. I loved everything about this book. Without going into detail, I wish to address one criticism that I have encountered in online reviews of this novel. That is, it's brevity. One reviewer said that he felt the novel was wonderful but should have been twice or three times as long. He gave the book a B+ because it was "too short".

I can understand his point. I too, longed to read more of this compelling tale. However, the fact that the book is not long and drawn out is central to the effect it has on the reader. Just like the characters, we become part of a world moving too fast. As the characters long for more of each other, so does the reader long for more of the story. The feeling I was left with when I finished the last page, was one of yearning. I am sure that is why I searched for reviews and disucssions on the subject. Shan Sa knew exactly what she was doing in keeping this story short. A willing reader will be infected by the same condition that drives the central characters. Well done!

3 out of 5 stars Fun read but yearning for more.......2006-05-22

Being a casual go player, I read this book believing that it will lead to a fun go-like read (such as the popular manga -graphic novel- Hikaru no Go). Instead, the title doesn't really do justice to the seriousness of the book, or anything to do with go. Although go brings the two protaganists together, that is the extent to the impact the game has.

The book has a fast pace, short chapters, and quick alterings between the two main characters. However, I did not feel a sense of connection between the two, and felt absolutely no sympathy for any of them even after their tragic ends. I felt like the book had a quick ending that could've been made a little better. Overall it had a depressing sentiment about it. If you don't like sad books or books of the nature, then I don't suggest this bdook.

5 out of 5 stars Territorial Imperatives on the Game Board and in Life .......2006-03-20

Over the last decade, computer experts have been devising chess playing programs capable of beating even the world champions. No such program has yet been developed to top the grand masters of the infinitely more complex Go, the Chinese/Japanese game of territoriality that is played not on the board squares, but on its intersections. The subtlety and ethereal strategies of the game, its objectives for territorial control, and its shifting positions of superiority provide the background for a heartfelt and ultimately heartbreaking story of the Japanese invasion of Manchuria and China in the 1930's.

The story is set in a small Manchurian town called A Thousand Winds. A young, unnamed girl is the town champion at Go, beating all comers as they meet and play on tables in the town square. At the same time, an unnamed but slightly older Japanese man has entered the army for his family's honor. His unit is one of the earliest sent into Manchuria, where he gets his first taste of the violence and hardship of war. When his battalion quarters in the town of Thousand Winds while searching the area for insurgents, the young, Mandarin-speaking officer is ordered to serve as a spy. He dresses like a Chinese and walks to the town square where he meets the young girl and engages her in a game of Go. Over a period of several days, hardly speaking to one another and never divulging so much as their names, they battle over the Go board in scenes faintly reminiscent of Yasunari Kawabata's marvelous novella, THE MASTER OF GO (also a story of two generations). They reveal their personalities to one another through their style of play, even as enormous events occurring simultaneously in the young girl's personal life impact her play and her relationship with the stranger. In the end, their relationship takes on aspects of the story of Zhu Yingtai and Liangshan Bo, the starcrossed "Butterfly Lovers" of Chinese historical legend.

Shan Sa presents her story in minute chapters of just three to five pages each, alternating between the voices of the girl who plays Go and the Japanese officer. If the book is a Go board, each chapter is one stone's play, first from the girl, then from the man. You can practically hear the light click of a stone as each chapter ends. Of course, just as the Go board itself becomes increasingly complex, with bits of territory under White control and others under Black control, so too does the novel's story line advance in complexity, with little pockets of territorial control.

In fact, THE GIRL WHO PLAYED GO is largely about the struggle for territorial control, with events occurring at the intersections of human lives. The young girl battles for the heart of her first love, Min, while Min's friend Jing battles for her heart. Min's actions ultimately suggest that his motives were little more than sexual conquest coupled with an idealistic desire to exit life in a glorious blaze of martyrdom. The Go playing girl's friend, Huong, battles her family for control over her own life and her destiny. The Japanese officer battles for control over his emotions, his disgust with war, and his family's honor. Finally, of course, the Japanese battle for control over Manchuria and greater China. Every character in the story is caught up in a real-life game of Go, without the board or the pieces, and each move they make leads to territory ceded and territory gained. Some players win, but for others, the outcome is tragic. For the girl who plays Go and her Japanese officer opponent, some might label the outcome of their game a win, others a loss, still others a draw. Life is ambiguous; only the players can decide if they've won or lost.

According to the book flap, Shan Sa left Beijing for France in 1990 and has written two earlier, prize-winning novels in French. Judging by her beautifully crafted and deeply moving THE GIRL WHO PLAYED GO, one can only hope that the publisher (Alfred A. Knopf) will engage Adriana Hunter or another translator to bless us with translations of the other two, as well as any of Shan Sa's future work. She certainly merits access to a wide American audience.

NOTE -- It appears that Regan Books (Harper Collins) is publishing another of Shan Sa's novels, entitled EMPRESS, on May 2, 2006. I for one will be in line to purchase it that day.

3 out of 5 stars What happened to the game of Go?.......2005-10-25

It is always interesting, though sometimes jarring, for me (being Chinese) to read about Chinese things and people in English. Concepts and names that sound very natural take on an exotic taste when translated. However, I think this particular novel reads particularly smoothly, and does a good job shifting between the two different points of view. The bite-sized chapters make things move rather swiftly.

The novel also navigates well between the personal and the historical, and the war is made real through the various characters involved.

What was particularly disappointing for me, however, was how the author never went very deeply into the game of go itself. While she alluded to go as a metaphor for attacking, life and death, we are never given any details of the actual games themselves. The title set me up to expect the game of go to be an integral part of the story, but I was left with the impression that the author didn't play go herself but simply used it as a nice image.

When a craft or game is highlighted as such the reader has the expectation that the author will reveal, through knowledge of the craft or game, another dimension of life. Boxing in "The Power of One", forensic science in "Anil's Ghost" are examples of how solid research and knowledge of the subject enriches the fiction.

The ending is a bit abrupt in terms of pacing, and I am not entirely convinced that the cultural differences between the Chinese and Japanese feel right. Despite this, the characters are quite special and endearing in their own way, which is what kept me turning the pages.
