Book Description
Both electrical and optical imaging are rapidly expanding areas, with applications to medicine and industrial process monitoring. However, many groups use very crude algorithms and software that negate their effort in instrumentation and experimental areas. Methods for Solving Non-Linear Inverse Problems and Applications in Tomography is intended to be of use to those physicists and engineers working on these (and related) techniques over a wide range of applications. The book provides an introduction to reconstruction algorithms for nonlinear inverse problems, with emphasis on the authors' experience in the fields of electrical impedance tomography and near infrared optical absorption and scatter imaging (OAST). The book presents the subject with mathematical rigor, but also offers practical advice on methods that work.

Superb reading!.......2007-04-10
I am pleasantly surprised at what a marvelous read this book is! Altick provides a very thorough background on Victorian history, people, philosophy, economics, politics, religion, literature etc. which is not only highly informative but also fascinating. After carrying this book everywhere for a week and delighting at even having the opportunity to read two pages at a time, I found myself returning to Amazon.com to look for other books by the same author.
Altick not only knows the Victorian experience (and its development and changes throughout the 19th century), but he knows how to present it in a manner which is highly illuminating. Another plus is how, perhaps without meaning to, he provides a backdrop for socio-political-economic developments of the 20th century, which not only affected Great Britain, but spread across the Atlantic to the U.S. As a result, I am not only becoming much more knowledgeable about Victorian times and able to understand the context of the Victorian novels I have been reading, but I have become more aware of the philosophies, value systems and practices which have shaped western society today. This is one of the best nonfiction books I have ever read.
Top of the line!.......2005-08-02
I can not tell you how splendid this work is, I just am flabergasted! Some books are written and then some books are "written"! This book was "written"! Hands down I have to tell you this was a book that was "written" !
I am a professional critic so I have a few gripes. One the binding bent to easily when I threw the book against the wall. OK, so I have a problem with big words, the book uses big words when little words would suffice. Call me crazy but do not call me if you plan to read this p...I am told I will love the book and given time (and some time on the rack) I suppose I would, but at this point I will have to reserve judgement until I read the dang thang. Please do not hold your breath....Best book I have ever...Go read now!
Intelligent and Literature-Centered.......2001-12-09
I cannot imagine a better "companion" to Victorian literature than this nicely organized book. This is an invaluable guide to anyone who would like to situate their knowledge of Victorian prose and poetry within the era's social/historical zeitgeist. Malthus, dissenters, social reforms, sexuality, class consciousness -- all here. I have found myself returning to this book many times over the years. Kudos to Altick.
A lively and thorough introduction to the Victorian period.......2000-10-10
I highly recommned this introduction to the values and literature of Victorian Britain. Replete with lively anecdotes and thoughtful analyses, Altick's work makes for an entertaining read even as it educates those just beginning to tackle nineteenth century British history and literature.

Good Book.......2007-06-12
This is a good book. I'm a teacher, and this book comes in handy all the time. It is an excellent resource for a teacher who needs to get thorough literary information FAST!! It's a lifesaver when making lesson plans or teaching lessons.
The truth is in the details .......2006-11-22
I have used this book for many years. It is an encyclopediac guide to the major works, and concepts, literary terms of world- literature. What I have usually found is that even if I had studied the subject before, reading the entry gave me new information. As a one- volume portable guide to world- literature I cannot recall encountering anything as good as this.
Excellent Reference Guide.......2006-03-04
I have attempted to embark on a reading program of the great literature starting back with Homer.
The Oxford Classics has over 700 books and one wonders where to start. All the literature seems to be interconnected from Balzac to Grisham. As soon as one reads Chekhov, for example, one wants to read another earlier book by Gogol, etc. There are about 5000 well know novels by great writers, such as 20 books by Hemingway alone. In the past few months I bought about 60 novels, mostly paperback from Penguin and Oxford by a variety of authors from Henry James to Jane Austen. At some point, I realized that I was buying at random and I needed to buy one or more guides.
I ended up buying "Bloomsbury Good reading Guide" by Rennison et al plus the present book. The Bloomsbury Guide has some nice features and it has a one and two star system to differentiate the masters from the highly recommend and the normal run of the mill "great books," but overall it is short and misses a few authors. It has a date cut-off point around 1800 - it is more about modern novels.
The present book is 800 pages long, twice as big as "Bloomsbury" and it describes books, authors, and literary terms in alphabetical order back to Greek times - in an encyclopaedia or dictionary style. It does not rate the books or describe plot details for most books, but it does discuss the theme, impact, importance, etc along with the characters. In some cases it does give parts of the plot away. Usually it includes a short biography of the author, and most books are described with the author's biography, but not all.
It presents all the great authors and some (great) novels back to Greek mythology. It includes Shakespeare, along with a broad range of works. The book is described as a reading "companion." Some authors are covered in part of a page, while a few get three or four pages. The discussion presents a short biography of the author, list of works, context of the writing, etc. This is usually cross referenced to the author's works, but only the masterpieces of literature all listed with separate sections. For example, Hemingway's books are not discussed as individual books each with their own sections, but are discussed as a group under Hemingway, i.e.: one must go to "Hemingway" under "H." However, a few other books such as Ulysses - considered to be a masterpiece - have separate sections or descriptions. For example, Ulysses is described under "U" plus there is a separate section on Joyce, found under "J."
This is an excellent reading guide or companion. It is a bargain and full of many reading ideas and explanations, and it is a great investment.
1/2... Essential Guide to World Literature.......2005-10-18
"The Reader's Companion to World Literature" is one of the best literary guides I have come across and have the good fortune to own. I purchased it at a time when my budding interest in Literature was beginning to blossom and it's quality has been a staple in my literary frame of mind since. The editors and writers have selected most of the well-known and many of the best and most influential authors in literary history, contributing many well-written and memorable articles. The "Immortals" like Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, Goethe, and Cervantes are given ample and worthy tribute, while authors considered to be on the "fringes" of academia are also included: Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine, Holderlin, and Leopardi are accorded their rightful place - considering the editors are educators, it's quite an open-minded decision very much to their credit. While the compilers of the tome have written in "A Note to the Reader" that "It was natural to stress Occidental literature more than Oriental...", they have included the prominent men of letters from the East with equal aplomb. And not only that, literary movements and historical periods in their relation to Literature are ably added, and many of the masterpieces and best works in world lit are given eloquent and informative sections of their own.
The few criticisms I have with this laudable reference is that more authors could have been included, and some of the entries should have been more comprehensive. A poet like Hart Crane and post-war authors who have left a deep impact like the Beats, Charles Bukowski, J.D. Salinger, and Philip Roth, to mention some, should have been included. Some of the entries are described in a mere sentence or two! While the brevity of these lilliputian descriptions are adequate and to the point, as a reference these entries should have been more elaborate to give the reader enough knowledge that such a book should offer. Perhaps these have been corrected in the most recent edition.
This is one of the best reference guides on Literature ever published and I highly recommend it to anyone with a passing need or desire to know more about the "noble art" as Edgar Allan Poe aptly stated. I eagerly look forward to purchasing the most recent edition under "Signet Classic", a title it deserves.

Book Description
Here is the book that Tolkien fans have needed for half a century--a detailed, book-length chronology of J. R. R. Tolkien's complex tale. Whether you are a serious Tolkien fan or simply someone who enjoys reading the story over and over again, this is the book for you. It's the first totally new reference for The Lord of the Rings since the 1970s.
Beginning over 1400 years before the major events in Tolkien's epic, it describes, year-by-year, the amazing and imaginative background history that Tolkien created for his masterpiece. Then for the main narrative, it becomes a day-by-day reference, describing what each character does on that day and all the places where those events are described in Tolkien's writings. You can find out, for instance, what Merry and Pippin are doing as Sam perpares rabbit stew on the morning of March 7.
Probe deeper into Tolkien. See why someone as serious as Gandalf was interested in fun-loving Hobbits. Discover an exciting new plot, based on Tolkien's notes, that begins when Aragorn captures Gollum. Follow along as the Black Riders and Gandalf race for the Shire. Decide for yourself whether Sauron and the Ring have any ties to Hitler and Stalin. Explore what Tolkien believed about nature and technology.
A few facts illustrate how helpful this chronology is. Most of narrative is a deliberately confusing sea of next days and third days that leave readers as confused as the tale's main characters. The middle 60 percent of The Lord of the Rings gives the current date only once. In the narrative as a whole, the date is given only 23 times, or once for every 43 pages, and most of those come when the plot is moving slowly. That's why those who want to dig deeper and understand better what Tolkien was saying will find this book a must-have.

Excellent Resource.......2006-12-10
Perry has done a wonderful job in untangling the very intricate tale woven by J.R.R. Tolkien. Of particular help are the copious margin notes which reference exactly where Perry is drawing the information contained within that section of his book. The commentary made by the author is a welcomed pause for reflection on the events that are taking place and keep the book from being a mere listing of dates and events. I teach a course on J.R.R. Tolkien and have found Untangling Tolkien a valuable resource, since it covers the entire history of Middle-earth: what comes before The Hobbit and what takes place after The Lord of The Rings. Bravo Mr. Perry, I look forward to reading your other books.
Knits up the ravels.......2004-10-31
An amazing accomplishment by a dedicated Tolkien fan.
That is how I'd sum up the book Untanging Tolkien. Michael Perry has first unraveled all Tolkien's "dates" -- which can be extrapolated from phases of the moon -- and then knit them together again in a cohesive outline, presented in much greater detail than Tolkien's own timeline (found buried in Appendix A of LOTR). By incorporating information from other Tolkien writings, the author of Untangling Tolkien collates additional facts about all the characters and the circumstances surrounding the War of the Ring, folding them all into this detailed chronology. He includes material that sheds light on possible parallels between Tolkien's work and events that were contemporary, and he provides original commentary that suggests some additional motivations for Tolkien's characters. Sidebars offer references to every source for the information presented and for each conclusion the author has drawn.
I found the format, with quick-reference bulleted lists and clearly delineated sections and subheadings, well-organized and easy to use.
NOTE: I read the third printing that was published in May 2004. Apparently the author has corrected many of the errors that David Bratman objected to (below). You won't find a better overview or a more throrough treatment of time and dates in LOTR than Perry provides in this book.
A Radiograph of LotR........2003-12-27
This book is layed out as a chronological record of the events covered by Tolkein's masterpiece with prefaces that explain the calender system created by Tolkein and its conversion to our more mundane (and possibly inferior) system. The type is clear, and margin citations clear and present for every entry. It's primary utility, at which it succeeds admirably, is as a kind of radiograph of Tolkein's work that reveals its astonishing complexity more clearly and allows one to admire, and more importantly, explore the book itself more quickly, easily, and deeply.
The book also contains copious notes inline with the chronology. These vary from informative to tangential, but at worst do not detract from the book's primary function. Mr. Perry is perhaps foremost as Lewis scholar, and so C.S. Lewis, a close acquaintance and friend of Tolkein, makes a number of appearances. Also making appearances in the notes are William Shakespeare and Winston Churchill.
All in all, a unique book which will save anyone who wants to do an in depth study of LotR a lot of time.
Splendid Tolkien Reference Work.......2003-12-21
Superb, exhaustive chronology of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga. Perry does a superior job in untangling a number of thorny chronological issues in Tolkien's narrative, and he employs some fine literary detective work in reconstructing what events are happening across Middle Earth on any given date. Especially admirable is his reconstruction of how much moonlight there was during each day of Frodo and Sam's journey into Mordor.
In addition to chronology, Perry supplies a lot of background information about Tolkien's themes and sources, as well as biographical tidbits about Tolkien. For example, there are fascinating discussions of Tolkien's views of technology, freedom, and totalitarianism. Perry also discusses Tolkien's stance toward the misuse of Germanic myths by the Nazis.
This is a great resource for Tolkien-lovers everywhere.
a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia.......2003-12-21
A year-by-year, later day-by-day, chronicle of the war against Sauron from the founding of the Shire to the glorious conclusion seems at the outset like a good idea. Perry calls LOTR's Appendix B, the Tale of Years, "far from complete" but it covers the whole period: what he means is that it's not detailed enough for him. Appendix B won't tell you which day Sam cooked coney for Frodo; Perry will.
But alas, the book does not stop there. The entries are written as bullet lists like a PowerPoint presentation, and many add pointless little flowcharts such as two-generation family trees. They reduce Tolkien's magnificently complex subcreation into a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia. And each yearly or daily entry comes with its commentary, whether directly relevant, side points, broader considerations, or dogmatic essays in applicability. The unrelieved banality and inappropriateness of these must be read to be believed; as also the author's clumsy, grammatically inept style, and his smug superiority to the characters. (He frequently criticizes the good guys' "blunders," all of them more complex than he implies.)
There's actually some good chronological analysis and speculation hiding in here. But how can someone who knows his Tolkien that well say that the wizards were Valar, or that Rohan gave Isengard to Saruman (it wasn't theirs to give, and Saruman was made its warden, not a freeholder), that Boromir and Faramir had a sibling rivalry (Tolkien specifically says not), or suggest that Galadriel should have sent daily eagles to check up on the Fellowship?
These are not isolated examples: the bloopers and misconceived ideas go on and on. The whole book is like that: it has the soul of a PowerPoint presentation. I can't recommend it on any terms.

Egyptian Mythology A toZ, A Young Reader's Companion.......2000-09-09
I found Pat Remler's Egyptian Mythology A to Z to be one the easiest ways to learn almost everything there is to know about ancient Egyptian mythology, and then some. What I liked best was that the author not only concentrated on the Pantheon of Ancient Egyptian Gods and their mythological histories, but Remler also included in it's encyclopedia-like format such entries as Magical Colors seen in tomb paintings. I will never look at another Ancient Egyptian scene, whether in a tomb, museum or book without knowing a great deal more about the significance of what each specific color actually means. Everything is included here, from covering the alleged "Curse of Tutankhamen" to a descriptive analysis of the various Crowns worn by the Pharaohs. I found the book's short Introduction to be another amazement. In a matter of three or four pages the author covers a time span of some 700,000 years, from Egypt's pre-history, when very little was happening, to the sudden explosion of culture less than 5,000 years ago. There is an easy to follow timeline for Ancient Egypt and numerous line drawings of the gods and goddesses by Mary Jordan. The splendid photographs by the author made this book, for me, a real pleasure to read. It is a handy, alphabetically arranged reference book that will surely be of interest to anyone in pursuit of reliable knowledge of the subject. It's a book for everyone, from being "A Young Reader's Companion," as its subtitle suggests, to the scholar in need of refreshing his or her memory of Ancient Egypt's mythological vastness. All the mystery and magic is here, in this very well written book. I have long been an armchair Egyptologist myself, have been since I was twelve-years-old. How I wish I had come across such a book as this, over half a century ago.
Egyptian Mythology: MORE than a Young Reader's Companion.......2000-09-08
Pat Remler's Egyptian Mythology A to Z is a gem! More than an encyclopedic approach to a fascinating period, this little jewel brings to life the ancient voice by presenting excerpts from sacred texts and literature. "We set off for the mines of the pharaohs..." begins the famous Myth of the Shipwrecked Sailor. "Give praise to Ptah, lord of Maat..." prays an ancient who is identified by his own voice "I am a man who swore falsely....and he (Ptah) made me see darkness by day..... beware ...refrain from uttering Ptah's name falsely..." The text, articulate and informative, is accompanied with lovely line drawings by the author's sister, Mary Jordan, as well as interesting photographs of Egyptian temples and artifacts. The entries are rich and far from general, offering often less known facts on this exciting period. Offerings on the Book of Gates,on the Amduat, the book of that which is in the underworld, go beyond brief identification. Each presents an account of the perilous journey taken through these mythic realms, through the hours, and gates that take one beyond. The presence of an index, seldom present in books with this A-Z format, adds to the ease of cross reference. There are thus no less than 25 entries for the god Thoth, as well as some 35 for the goddess Hathor. A two page bibliography points the reader to scholarly works for a more in depth study as well as future investigation. Egyptian Mythology lacks for nothing save a title which would better identify its true nature. I suggest the following: Egyptian Mythology A to Z: More than a Young Reader's Companion.
