Lattices and Ordered Algebraic Structures provides a lucid and concise introduction to the basic results concerning the notion of an order. "Operads" are mathematical devices which model many sorts of algebras (such as associative, commutative, Lie, Poisson, alternative, Leibniz, etc., including those defined up to homotopy, such as $A_{\infty}$-algebras). Since the notion of an operad appeared in the seventies in algebraic topology, there has been a renaissance of this theory due to the discovery of relationships with graph cohomology, Koszul duality, representation theory, combinatorics, cyclic cohomology, moduli spaces, knot theory, and quantum field theory.

This renaissance was recognized at a special session "Moduli Spaces, Operads, and Representation Theory" of the AMS meeting in Hartford, CT (March 1995), and at a conference "Opérades et Algèbre Homotopique" held at the Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques at Luminy, France (May--June 1995). Both meetings drew a diverse group of researchers.

This volume contains 16 carefully refereed articles by participants in the Special Session on Real Algebraic Geometry and Ordered Algebraic Structures at the Sectional Meeting of the AMS in Baton Rouge, April 1996, and the associated Special Semester in the spring of 1996 at Louisiana State University and Southern University, Baton Rouge. The 23 contributors to this volume were among the 75 mathematicians from 15 countries who participated.

Topics include the topology of real algebraic curves (Hilbert's 16th problem), moduli of real algebraic curves, effective sums of squares of real forms (Hilbert's 17th problem), efficient real quantifier elimination, subanalytic sets and stratifications, semialgebraic singularity theory, radial vector fields, exponential functions and valuations on nonarchimedean ordered fields, valued field extensions, partially ordered and lattice-ordered rings, rings of continuous functions, spectra of rings, and abstract spaces of (higher-level) orderings and real places.

This volume is about tree-like structures, namely semilinear ordering, general betweenness relations, $C$-relations and $D$-relations. It contains a systematic study of betweenness and introduces $C$- and $D$-relations to describe the behavior of points at infinity ("leaves" or "ends" or "directions") of trees. The focus is on structure theorems and on automorphism groups, with applications to the theory of infinite permutation groups.

This classic étude of the Parisian underworld from Balzac's History of the Thirteen trilogy was considered shocking in its day, and inspired a host of bad-boy poets and artists from Baudelaire to Swinburne to Balthus. The story still provides a jolt of naturalistic cruelty in its glib concluding lines, but its orientalism, emotional detachment, and paradoxical twist make it as much a portrait of Parisian manners of the mid-19th century as a study of one man's infatuation with a woman of impossible beauty and innocence. The fops and downtrodden workers and complacent petite bourgeoisie of the period are all present--gambling or saving or scheming--oblivious to the erotic servitude concealed behind the walls of one of the finest mansions on the Rue Saint-Lazare. When Henri de Marsay, the pampered and decadent heir of Lord Dudley, is led blindfolded to an assignation with the woman he most covets, he finds that his hated rival is his true brother--or, rather, sister--in vice. --Regina Marler

Parisian pulp fiction.......2005-11-17

This novella, the middle volume in Balzac's History of the Thirteen, is perhaps best thought of as a penny dreadful with a pedigree or a kind of Jim Thompson noir with literary pretensions. It's the melodramatic tale of Henri de Marsay, a physically beautiful but spiritually empty young man who devotes all his time to the pursuit of sensation and sensual pleasure. He develops a burning lust for the inaccessible golden-eyed girl of the title, Paquita Valdes. It's tempting to image that her eye-color is meant to indicate that she's merely an object, but I don't know that we can read that much into Balzac. At any rate, de Marsay does manage to seduce her, but becomes enraged when he realizes that she's the kept pet of a hidden rival, for whom he's something of a stand-in during their lovemaking. He cooks up a plan of revenge but by the time he arrives at the seraglio to effect it, Paquita has been murdered by her original lover, who turns out to be none other than Henri's equally beautiful and heartless half-sister. None of the characters are the least bit sympathetic, but as an indictment of Parisian life and French mores it's enjoyable enough.
