Buy "Elements of the Theory of Functions and Functional Analysis".......2007-08-19
I speak Russian and read it so-so - this is not the original work of Kolmogorov and Fomin but is a "freely" translated version. Unfortunately, "free" is not always "correct".
95% as good as Big Rudin, but 0.001% of the price.......2007-03-08
This book is exceptionally well written and planned out. I rate it as around 95% as good as Big Rudin, which means it's probably better than most Real Analysis books out there.
You will actually "understand" the motivation and purpose of the theories as you read through the book. It's rigorous, yet still inspiring and has sufficient examples to hammer ideas home. It's one of those rare books that is rigorous but still captures your interest enough to prevent you from walking away every 10 min. of reading.
For the price Dover charges for this one, I seriously think it's a steal. I'd even buy it for $50, which is still a bargain because the quality of the book is much better than those $100 books table props out there.
A good book on analysis.......2006-07-02
Although an introductory book, it covers most of the fundaments of analysis. That is, from abstract theory of metric spaces through topological spaces and functional analysis. It ends with a somewhat strange presentation of measure theory, but latter it exposes on a simple manner differentiation facts. This is a different and exiting book directed to the somewhat mature reader but not necessarily an analysis expert.
The exercises included are illustrative, but they aren't challenging.
A very nice read. Great for self study........2006-02-01
I am currently a first year graduate math student. I have had advanced calculus (we used Introduction to Analysis by W. Wade, covered chapters 1-7) and basic topology as an undergrad, and I'm working through Principles of Mathematical Analysis right now for class. On the side, I decided to try to learn some more advanced analysis. I found that my undergraduate courses were good enough to start reading Kolmogorov and Fomin on my own (after all, the preface states that Adv Calc is a prereq for the text). The definitions and theorems are clean and consise, and there are plenty of good examples to help you along with the concepts. At the end of most sections, there are several instructive problems to think about to help you along. Some of the methods and notations are a little dated, but for the price of the text, that can be easily ignored. This is a wonderful introduction and I'd recommend it for anyone who is interested in graduate level mathematics.
Read this book..........2005-10-28
... it is a must if you want to get an excellent introduction to the subject.

Book Description
Both the theory and applications of regular variation are given comprehensive coverage in this volume. In many limit theorems, regular variation is intrinsic to the result and exactly characterizes the limit behavior. The book emphasizes such characterizations, and gives a comprehensive treatment of those applications where regular variation plays an essential (rather than merely convenient) role. The authors rigorously develop the basic ideas of Karamata theory and de Haan theory including many new results and "second-order" theorems. They go on to discuss the role of regular variation in Abelian, Tauberian, and Mercerian theorems. These results are then applied in analytic number theory, complex analysis, and probability, with the aim of setting the theory in context. A widely scattered literature is thus brought together in a unified approach. With several appendices and a comprehensive list of references, analysts, number theorists, probabilitists, research workers, and graduate students will find this an invaluable and complete account of regular variation.

Book Description
These are the Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Multivariate Approximation, which was held at Witten-Bommerholz from September 27 until October 2, 1998. The contributions consist of elaborations and extensions of the main results presented during the conference. The following topics are covered: Node Distributions on the Sphere, Positive Quadratures, Discrepancy and Spherical Designs, Fekete Points, Interpolation and Hyperinterpolation on the Sphere, Modelling of Geopotential Data, Periodic, Monotone and Convex Approximations, Stability of the Fast Fourier Transform, Interpolation with Bivariate Splines and Periodic Functions, Range Restricted Interpolation, Saturation Phenomena for Box Spline Operators, Universal Harmonic Functions, Best One-Sided Approximation by Harmonic and Blending Functions, Besov Regularity for the Stokes Problem, Spherical Polynomial Approximations, Simultaneous Approximation in the Dirichlet Space, Weighted K-Functionals and Moduli of Smoothness.
Book Description
This book deals with problems of approximation of continuous or bounded functions of several variables by linear superposition of functions that are from the same class and have fewer variables. The main topic is the space of linear superpositions $D$ considered as a subspace of the space of continuous functions $C(X)$ on a compact space $X$. Such properties as density of $D$ in $C(X)$, its closedness, proximality, etc. are studied in great detail. The approach to these and other problems based on duality and the Hahn-Banach theorem is emphasized. Also, considerable attention is given to the discussion of the Diliberto-Straus algorithm for finding the best approximation of a given function by linear superpositions.

Book Description
The history of mathematics is, to a considerable extent, connected with the study of solutions of the equation f(x)=a=const for functions f(x) of one real or complex variable. Therefore, it is surprising that we know very little about solutions of u(x,y)=A=const for functions of two real variables. These two solutions, called level of sets, are very important with regard to applications in physics, biology and economics as they make a map of appropriate processes described by the function u(x,y) for given parameters (x,y). This text explores a concept, Gamma-lines, which generalizes the concept of levels of sets and, at the same time, the concept of a-points. The authors provide a book on Gamma-lines for the broad specialist and show the large range of their field of applications. The general methods proposed in this volume are useful for both physicists and engineers.
Book Description
The purpose of this book is to give a thorough treatment of the harmonic analysis of spherical functions on symmetric spaces. The theory was originally created by Harish-Chandra in the late 1950's and important additional contributions were made by many others in the succeeding years. The book attempts to give a definite treatment of these results from the spectral theoretic viewpoint. The harmonic analysis of spherical functions treated here contains the essentials of large parts of harmonic analysis of more general functions on semisimple Lie groups. Since the latter involves many additional technical complications, it will be very illuminating for any potential student of general harmonic analysis to see how the basic ideas emerge in the context of spherical functions. With this in mind, an attempt has been made only to use those methods (as far as possible) which generalize. Mathematicians and graduate students as well as mathematical physicists interested in semisimple Lie groups, homogeneous spaces, representations and harmonic analysis will find this book stimulating.

Book Description
In this important and original monograph, useful for both academic and professional researchers and students of mathematics and physics, the author describes his work on the Riemann zeta function and its adelic interpretation. It provides an original point of view, bringing new, highly useful dictionaries between different fields of mathematics. It develops an arithmetical approach to the continuum of real numbers and unifies many areas of mathematics including: Markov Chains, q-series, Elliptic curves, the Heisenberg group, quantum groups, and special functions (such as the Gamma, Beta, Zeta, theta, Bessel functions, the Askey-Wilson and the classical orthagonal polynomials) The text discusses real numbers from a p-adic point of view, first mooted by Araeklov. It includes original work on coherent theory, with implications for number theory and uses ideas from probability theory including Markov chains and noncommutative geometry which unifies the p-adic theory and the real theory by constructing a theory of quantum orthagonal polynomials.

Incredible implications for physics and mathematics.......2003-04-16
At first it seemed this book was [spendy] but once I bought it I had no regrets. Mastering the material, means that one gets a glimpse at the potential exquisite simplicity of the p-adics. You also get a real sense that the proof of the greatest problem of all - the Riemann Hypothesis - is not far away if Haran's philosophy is pursued just one step further....
Book Description
Set against the backdrop of the Salem witch hunts, Elizabeth Gaskell’s somber novella reveals much about the complicity of mankind. Foreword by Jenny Uglow.
Recently orphaned, Lois is forced to leave the English parsonage that had been her home and sail to America. A God–fearing and honest girl, she has little to concern her in this new life. Yet as she joins her distant family, she finds jealousy and dissension are rife, and her cousins quick to point the finger at the “imposter.” With the whole of Salem gripped by a fear of the supernatural, it seems her new home is where she is in most danger. Lonely and afraid, the words of an old curse return to haunt her. Collaborator and friend of Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins, Elizabeth Gaskell (1810–1865) is a leading figure in Victorian literature.
Customer Reviews:
The cruelty of cowardice.......2007-07-30
The well-educated wife of a Unitarian minister in Victorian Manchester, Elizabeth Gaskell must have understood the dangers of misused Christianity and religious intolerance in a closed community. In Lois the Witch, uncertainty surrounds Salem--deep forests, wild animals, and Indians who are thought to be savage pawns of Satan. In the midst of that untamed wilderness is a town full of people trying to be what they believe to be godly, each of whom lives in fear that he or she may not be among the chosen, the predestined of God.
Into this repressed, volatile setting arrives Lois Barclay, a young, attractive, pious English Anglican whose parents have died and who has come to live with her Puritan uncle and his family. Lois is different from her new family in every way. While she is warm, affectionate, empathetic, and genuinely and effortlessly godly, she soon discovers that her aunt is cold and proud ("Godly Mr Cotton Mather hath said that even he might learn of me; and I would advise thee rather to humble thyself"). Her older daughter, misnamed Faith, for she is agnostic, is both obsessive and unexpressive, and her younger daughter, misnamed Prudence, is sadistic and vicious. More disturbingly, her son, in his early twenties and unmarried, sees visions and hears voices, and not surprisingly, focuses his long-repressed sexuality on the gentle, attractive newcomer.
Haplessly, Lois becomes the focal point for this family's frustrations, fears, desires, jealousies, and, finally, hatred. She, like many of the "witches," is a victim of being different in a conformist society that is both filled with unfulfilled desires and afraid of the unknown.
In Gaskell's Salem, selfishness is rife. Lois's uncle "cried like a child, rather at his own loss of a sister whom he had not seen for more than twenty years, than at that of the orphan's [sic] standing before him, trying hard not to cry . . ." The son, Manasseh, is interested only in his own visions and "his own sick soul," while Prudence "only seemed excited to greater mischief" by the attention generated by her cruelties. This selfishness seems to be the natural result of a belief system in which the fate of one's soul is painfully uncertain and in which one is surrounded by evil. Selfishness and a desperate sense of self-preservation help to explain the moral blindness and the inability to look objectively within as the accusations start to flow and are willingly, almost eagerly, accepted as fact.
Sexual repression leads to fascination with the very subject. When Lois goes to the common pasture (on the edge of the forest where evil dwells), her thought is of a story in which a double-headed snake, "in the service of the Indian wizards," lures white maidens "to seek out some Indian man, and must beg to be taken into his wigwam, abjuring faith and race forever." To the white maidens of Gaskell's Salem, such tales hold terror and promise.
In the 86 pages of Lois the Witch, Gaskell succinctly sets the stage, defines the characters and the critical relationships, and shows how every innocent act and word are used against the bewildered Lois, whose fear is that she will have to share her cell with a real witch--because she too succumbs to the general paranoia. Selfish to the end, her aunt "summoned her to meet her at the judgement-seat, and answer for this deadly injury done to both souls and bodies of those who had taken her in, and received her when she came to them an orphan and a stranger." Ironically, it is the selfless Lois, who left England so she would not be the cause of a quarrel between her lover and his wealthy father, who, like Christ, pays the price for the sins of others.
Gaskell has taken a complex sociological matter, the Salem witch trials, and humanized it. This is a tiny gem of a story that leaves a deep impression.
Book Description
Lois Bourne, psychic from childhood and a practicing witch and occultist for over 30 years, has written a book of very personal reflections. She deals frankly with her own remarkable powers and examines the philosophy behind the Craft of the Wise. Exploring such New Age themes as psychometry and clairvoyance, precognition and the secret of invisibility have led her to many strange encounters and experiences. This is a deeply moving book that shows how the mystical and the magical have always been inherent in human life and nature.
Book Description
Lois Bourne is that most fascinating of all figures, a proper English witch complete with psychic abilities, a treasure house of occult lore, and a lifetime of experience in this age-old craft. Here, she speaks openly about her adventures in the occult - taking care to explain the secrets behind these powers and to offer new insights into the realm of witchcraft. is an intimate, often witty and always wise look at an exceptional woman who has followed an exceptional way of life.

An inspiring book.......2002-03-26
I enjoyed Ms.Bourne's book. I find myself reading it over and over when I feel down. It's a book that touches you emotionally, and spiritually. I can't describe the feelings I feel about this literature. It's so overwhelming. I would like to write to her again, I had once written to her and she wrote back. I lost her address. Does she have an e-mail address? If so I would really like it. Please share my e-mail address with her.
With our thoughts, we make our world........2001-03-13
I was about 16 years old when I first read this book, (I am now 31) and I will never forget the feeling that I had finally 'come home'. For the first time I felt like I belonged to something that I instinctively understood and it made blissful sense of all the confused feelings I'd had growing up (and indeed I still am growing up) with conventional, organised religion and feeling very much like a square peg. I loved her humour, her earthyness, her simple, witty style and her fearlessness. When I was 16 the New Age movement hadn't taken hold, there were hardly any books available to teenagers on Witchcraft or any related subjects. So it was a great joy to me to find this hidden in the shelves of my local library and put my feet firmly on this path that accepted and understood me. I would recommend this book highly to anyone starting out and I intend to read it again, to remind myself of where I started and how far I've come since then.
Glad it's been reprinted. She's a star.
Fantastic read for all, not just witches.......2000-07-07
I found this book quite by accidents (but there are no accidents are there?). I couldn't put it down and have since read it countless times. It's too bad this book is not more widely distributed/advertised. I think it is a classic, and would have interested the same people who flocked to see the film "THE SIXTH SENSE." If you have read other books by authors like Sybil Leek, Szusanna Budapest, Marion Weinstein, Starhawk and other prominent writers on the subject of witchcraft, you will find that this book is completely different. This book is quite literally a biography of Lois Bourne, who just happens to be a witch. Lois has a terrific sense of humor and is very lowkey about some of the fantastic things that have happened to her. Reading this book made me want to hear more, to sit down and have a cup of tea with her. Aside from the wonderful stories she tells, Lois provides an accurate account of what it means to be a witch. If you are new to the craft, this story will give you a definite sense of the lifestyle you are about to enter into. Witch circumstances and philosophies like "being on call", deciding whether to help people who seek you out, of having to deal with situations you'd sooner avoid (like negative forces/energy) are exemplified in this book. Lois is quite modest about the very incredible things she has done. But of course, you are not discouraged from becoming a witch if you are not as gifted as Lois. I would recommend this biography to anyone, as you probably have never meant anyone like Lois before. This story is not definitely not just for witches.
Amusing at every level.......2000-05-29
The book is not pretentious, nor designed to make you believe in hocus pocus. It seems clear that the author does not give a hoot if the reader believes her or not. She just want to relate very funny and amusing situations which she has gone through, the nature of her magic and some very interesting explanations about white and black magic (no formulas or spells are enclosed as addendum). From then you might draw your own conclusions.
Mine remains the same. Life could be very amusing provided you always remember that when conclusions are established, you are running the risk to stop learning. My warm regards to Ms Bourne in case she still around this planet.
Excellent insight, Guideline for non-witches.......1999-10-20
I was struck by the utter sincerity of the tale. Allthough not endowed with the special talents of Ms Bourne, I think there is a lot to learn from her, for a non-witch. The good we can do for each other in simple ways are manifold and she reminds us of these. I found the book a true guide to helping others and with that a guide to a better life for myself. I am lending this book to a friend, who has had many strange experiences in her life and I hope this can give her the comfort to deal with them as a positive part of her life and not as scary and something that has to be avoided. I am very glad Ms Bourne has decided to publish this book and extend her positive, white magic to others who cannot meet her in person. As a simple voodoo doll pushed through the mail-slot can cause havoc, so can a simple good deed undo it. So really we can all do a little magic. Thankyou for listening to my opinion and thankyou again for writing this book.

Dancing, walking, and sometimes running across country........2004-01-10
I was eager to get my teeth into this book, after having been a huge fan of the author's first book "Autobiography of a Witch" which I read over a decade ago. However, this book seemed more about the association and friendship with Gerald Gardner (and about his character), and a history lesson throughout some of the travels mentioned in the book. There is mention about the experiences of being a part of and working in a coven, and also chapters about some other interesting witches Lois Bourne has met throughout the course of time which delighted my intrigue. But all in all it wasn't quite what I had anticipated or hoped for. Still worth the read, so long as you don't pre-empt the guts of the book by the suggestive title.

A wonderfully original story.......2003-02-16
Bella is a witch who dreams of big castles, silk gowns, and the jewels associated with princesses. But when the Grand Wizard has forbidden any witch to turn themselves into a princess, Bella's dreams are dashed. But clever Bella has another plan that might work -- marry a prince! And with a little online dating help that's exactly what Bella sets out to do. Lois G. Grambling's wonderfully original story is very nicely illustrated by Judy Love. The Witch Who Wanted To Be A Princess is spellbinding, hugely funny, and enthusiastically recommended reading for children preschool through fourth grade.
