Introduction to Groundwater Modeling.......2003-05-05
I found this text very valuable in explaining the differences between these two methods and how each handles the dependent variable (head) and its first derivative (flow). The text also discusses Laplaces equation, iterative methods including Gauss-Seidel/SOR. Chapters are dedicated to finite difference and finite element methods under steady-state and transient conditions. It also demonstrates how each element is handled separately using finite element method and then the equations are assembled into a conductance matrix.
This text is a very good complement to other modeling texts. However, if you want to learn how to set up your hydrogeologic conceptual model, what data is needed to develop a good model, how to choose your numerical model, verify, calibrate your model, interpret results and perform a post audit, this is not that text. For the purpose of model setup etc. I would recommend Applied Groundwater Modeling.
Outdated and of little value.......2001-12-09
I found this book somewhat outdated. Even though it was well-written if was of little value. There are several other books of better quality.
Highly recommended.......2000-03-31
I've used this book in two of my groundwater modeling classes. Despite the fact that it is a little outdated, it has the clearest explaination I've come across of the mathematics behind groundwater modeling. In addition, it contains very good example problems.

Spectacular Primer on Difference Equations!.......2001-01-08
This book is a fantastic "gateway" text into the vast and wonderful world of difference equations. It does have something of a dusty, "historical" feel to it, as one reviewer has alluded, since the field has changed a bit. Nonetheless, if you are trying to study time-series analysis for the first time, you will save yourself a ton of pain by picking up this magnificent little book.
An historical view of difference equation.......2000-10-14
Well witten and full of examples, but not a modern view of this field. Numerical computation has changed the way to solve this kind of problems, very interesting from an historical perspective.

Book Description
This book integrates both classical and modern treatments of difference equations. It contains the most updated and comprehensive material, yet the presentation is simple enough for the book to be used by advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. This third edition includes more proofs, more graphs, and more applications. The author has also updated the contents by adding a new chapter on Higher Order Scalar Difference Equations, and also recent results on local and global stability of one-dimensional maps, a new section on the various notions of asymptoticity of solutions, a detailed proof of Levin-May Theorem, and the latest results on the LPA flour-beetle model.

An Introduction to Difference Equation.......2003-10-29

One of the Very Best Introductions on Difference Equations........2000-08-29
Among the few introductory texts to difference equations this book is one of the very best ones. It has many features that the other texts don't have, e.g., stability theory, the Z-transform method (including a study of Volterra systems), and asymptotic behavior of solutions of difference equations (including Levinson's lemma) are studied extensively. It also contains very nice examples that primarily arise in applications in a variety of disciplines, including neural networks, feedback control, biology, Markov chains, economics, and heat transfer. Unfortunately, among differential and difference equations, students usually only learn about differential equations, although many problems they encounter later can be solved using difference equations. Hence it is very useful for students to study difference equations (or even, dynamic equations, which can accomodate differential and difference equations at the same time), and for such an undergraduate or beginning graduate course, Saber's book can be used as a textbook. It is particularly useful for such a purpose since it contains many exercises and also many programs for the calculator TI-85. Although the first edition did contain several misprints, the second edition has eliminated most of them. Saber's superb writing style makes reading this book very enjoyable.
Exceptional: the defintive book on difference equations.......2000-04-20
This book is a must read by all those mathematicians, scientists and engineers who like to understand difference equations and discrete dynamics. It contains the most complete and comprehenive analysis of the stability of one-dimensional maps or first order difference equations. It has an extensive number of applications in a variety of fields from neural network to host-parasitoid systems. The most enjoyable part of the book is the new chapter on continued fractions and orthogonal polynomials and the totally revised chapter on asymptotics. The chapter on stability theory is by far the best exposition on the subject; it updates most of the material in the popular LaSalle book. I enjoyed very much the lucid and transparent writing style of Elaydi which many math books lack. I am planning to use this textbook in my undergraduate course on differnce equations and dynamical systems in the Fall of 2000. There are some minor misprints and errors that I was able to decipher. The author may need to consider publishing a solutiion manual since some of the problems in the book are quite challenging. It is also desirable if the author post an errata on his web page and/or on amazon.com.
Needs an errata.......2000-04-12
A very readable text, but I noticed several annoying misprints, mostly involving references to equations, examples, and theorems within the text.
Recommended, but caveat reader.
a wonderful book that fits several levels.......2000-02-21
This is the best book on modern difference equations. It contains a wide range of material on difference equations and may be very interesting in applications in Physics, Biology, economics and other many subjects. It is easy and readable for those who want a quick overlook on the subject. At the same time it is very deep and goes to high level and leads to many research problems for those who wish that. I am so impressed by this book that I am going to translate it into Arabic through the Arabic Organization for Education, Culture and Science. Shortly , this is a wonderful book and I strongly recommended it to every scientist who is working and interested in discrete models

Advances in Dynamic Equations on Time Scales
ASIN: 0817642250 |
Book Description
The study of dynamic equations on a measure chain (time scale) goes back to its founder S. Hilger (1988), and is a new area of still fairly theoretical exploration in mathematics. Motivating the subject is the notion that dynamic equations on measure chains can build bridges between continuous and discrete mathematics. Further, the study of measure chain theory has led to several important applications, e.g., in the study of insect population models, neural networks, heat transfer, and epidemic models. Key features of the book: * Introduction to measure chain theory; discussion of its usefulness in allowing for the simultaneous development of differential equations and difference equations without having to repeat analogous proofs * Many classical formulas or procedures for differential and difference equations cast in a new light * New analogues of many of the "special functions" studied * Examination of the properties of the "exponential function" on time scales, which can be defined and investigated using a particularly simple linear equation * Additional topics covered: self-adjoint equations, linear systems, higher order equations, dynamic inequalities, and symplectic dynamic systems * Clear, motivated exposition, beginning with preliminaries and progressing to more sophisticated text * Ample examples and exercises throughout the book * Solutions to selected problems Requiring only a first semester of calculus and linear algebra, Dynamic Equations on Time Scales may be considered as an interesting approach to differential equations via exposure to continuous and discrete analysis. This approach provides an early encounter with many applications in such areas as biology, physics, and engineering. Parts of the book may be used in a special topics seminar at the senior undergraduate or beginning graduate levels. Finally, the work may serve as a reference to stimulate the development of new kinds of equations with potentially new applications.

Does this book exist?.......2006-09-15
I am a graduate student at Western Kentucky University and the bookstore still hasn't managed to obtain any copies of this book, four weeks into the semester. I have tried twice ordering it from Amazon (both times with one day shipping) and it's just sat there in whatever warehouse they store these things in, assuming the book exists at all because at this point it seems it doesn't. Thus I have no idea how to rate the item, but since one is required I give it 5 stars because it would be worth that much to me when I take a test over the material covered next week.

Book Description
Anthony Trollope was a masterful satirist with an unerring eye for the most intrinsic details of human behavior and an imaginative grasp of the preoccupations of nineteenth-century English novels. In The Last Chronicle of Barset, Mr. Crawley, curate of Hogglestock, falls deeply into debt, bringing suffering to himself and his family. To make matters worse, he is accused of theft, can't remember where he got the counterfeit check he is alleged to have stolen, and must stand trial. Trollope's powerful portrait of this complex man-gloomy, brooding, and proud, moving relentlessly from one humiliation to another-achieves tragic dimensions.
Customer Reviews:
good read.......2007-08-10
This Penguin edition has terrific notes, it's bound well, and for such a huge book (over 800 pages) it's very easy to hold and read in bed. Very fast and enjoyable novel--my second favorite of Trollope's after Barchester Towers.
last but not least..........2006-11-27
The novel is finely written. The reader would do well to read the first five in the series, as this calls more than most on things from the past. Trollope delights in bringing and tying together most of the major characters of his series in a satisfying stew. Septamus Harding is especially well drawn and unifies the entire series. The reader learns much more of Josiah Crawley, whose travails form the spine of the plot. All in all the reader is treated to a portrayal of Victorian society that strikes me as entirely believable.
A must-read for Barchester fans, but uneven and overblown.......2004-01-14
I see I am in the minority here, but I don't feel the finale of the Barsetshire novels is up to the mark of the works that preceded it. It cannot be called a disappointment, exactly, since it has moments of grandeur and brilliance, and as always Trollope is unfailingly, even painfully true to his people. Lily Dale's and Johnny Eames's non-courtship is brought to a heartbreaking non-conclusion. The fall of Mrs Proudie could hardly be more satisfying, even sad, and I was moved to tears to see the last of Mr Harding. Johnny's dalliance with a manhunter is truly original and wonderfully rendered, by turns hilarious and scary.
But the plot construction is poor and the book feels bloated, overwritten, about 100 pages too long. The nominal love interests, Grace and Henry, are just ghosts of characters, and to make his plot work Trollope resorts to the embarrassing tactic of keeping the parties who will instantly unravel it off-stage and incommunicado for hundreds of pages. Meanwhile we are treated to repetitive scenes that show us the frustrating, self-pitying Josiah Crawley being frustrating and self-pitying.
THE LAST CHRONICLE's chief pleasure -- and for a Trollope reader it is a very great pleasure -- is in seeing all our old favorites from the previous novels respond to the Crawleys' predicament, and in having Lily's and Johnny's story told to its end, replete with the new cast of characters Johnny has taken up. I would not have missed it. I only wish Trollope had had a strong-minded editor by.
the love of old friendships, and the sweetness of old faces.......2001-11-17
As time passes, the novels of Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) seem to gain in freshness, stature and influence. He lived long enough to see his modest reputation fade, in contrast to that of many of his famous novelist contemporaries. Nowadays the situation seems to be reversing.
Of special merit, amongst his huge output, are the so-called Barsetshire ("clerical") novels, and the so-called Palliser ("political") novels. Of the former, the last and longest is "The Last Chronicle of Barset". Not only are there fresh concerns, complications and current affairs introduced here, but there are also fond and final appearances of people and places encountered in the earlier Barsetshire novels. Everybody's favourite literary virago, Mrs Proudie, is again denouncing and dominating everybody. Trollope even contrives to create a character who has the temerity to say to her, "Peace, Woman!"
There are the innumerable characters of marriageable age, whose names are perhaps more memorable than their characters, whose charming dialogues and relationship problems are deftly laid out and interwoven. Above all, there is master story-teller Anthony Trollope, admitting finally that for him Barset has been a real place, a place where he as been induced to wander too long by his "love of old friendships, and by the sweetness of old faces".
Superb TV and radio adaptations of Trollope's Barsetshire novels have appeared in recent years. His novels read aloud well, too, and audio cassette readings, some of them unabridged, can provide endless hours of rich listening pleasure.
An Unjustly Neglected English Language Classic.......2001-07-27
THE LAST CHRONICLE OF BARSET is one of the great novels in the English language, and yet it is not widely read. The reason for this is obvious: it is the LAST novel in the Barsetshire series of novels, and a relatively small number make it all the way through the previous five volumes. This is a shame, because while all the previous novels are quite excellent and thoroughly entertaining, the final novel in the series is a work of an entirely different level of magnitude.
This novel is also one of the darkest that Trollope wrote. The moral dilemma in which Crawley finds himself would seem to belong more readily to the world of Dostoevsky than Victorian England.
Can this novel be read on its own, without reading the novels that precede it? Yes, but I do feel that it is best read after working through the other books in the series first. This is hardly an unfortunate situation, since all the books in the series are superb (with the exception of the first novel, THE WARDEN, which, while nice, is merely a prelude to the far superior five novels that came after it). Many of the characters in THE LAST CHRONICLE appeared first as characters in the other novels, and the central character of the book, Crawley, himself appeared earlier.
Trollope is...one of the most entertaining writers the English language has produced. At this point I have read around 20 of his novels, and fully intend to read more. But of all his books, this one might be his finest. The only two that I feel are close to the same level are his incredible books THE WAY WE LIVE NOW and HE KNEW HE WAS RIGHT (possibly the finest work on excessive jealousy since OTHELLO). Anyone who loves the English novel owes it to him or herself to read as many of these volumes as possible. My recommendation would be to read first the six novels in the Barsetshire Chronicles, and then to move on to the other two novels I mentioned. If still hooked, then try his other major series of novels, variously known as the Political novels or the Palliser novels or the Parliamentary novels, which begin with CAN YOU FORGIVE HER?
