good, but not the best.......2003-11-15
when i first saw this book, i was very excited. i would have rated it 5 stars at that time. It's a much easier read than Golub's "matrix computations" and Demmel's "Applied Numerical Linear Algebra".
but then I saw Trefethen and Bau's "Numerical Linear Algebra", and I was totally amazed by that book. By comparison, this book by Watkins can only be rated 4 stars. It just doesn't match up to Trefethen's book in terms of elegance, smoothness, intuitiveness, and more importantly, focusing on the essence instead of being buried in the details.
if you are really interested in the topic of matrix computation, I suggest you start with Trefethen's book, and use Golub's book as reference later on.
interesting alternative to golub/van loan.......2000-09-03
This book is not that famous as the golub/van loan bible but it is more than competitive. Especially for undergraduate or even graduate students who want to become familiar with computational aspects of linear algebra the bible might be to compact; watkins gives one more help to understand the main ideas.

Book Description
One of the first textbooks on the topic, this book brings together and further articulates the fundamental concepts in parallel computing. It covers the application of parallel algorithms to numerical linear algebra, with an emphasis on the design and analysis of algorithms that are of
particular importance in both industrial and academic research. The first part is devoted to a discussion of the general principles and techniques involved, and is illustrated by numerous examples. Dr. Modi goes on to describe some key areas of application, such as sorting, linear systems, partial
differential equations, singular-value decomposition, and eigenvalue analysis. Based on a lecture course at the University of Cambridge, the text will appeal to those with an interest in the design and implementations of algorithms in parallel computing.

Excellent text on matrix solution algorithms........1997-12-23
Excellent text focusing on solution of matrix equations. It surpases other books in this category by including many of the common practical pitfalls in writing program code for solving matrix equations. The text and code fragments are well written and clearly discussed. Code optimization is considered with discussions on such topics as memory core use and specialized matrix considerations that haunt the practicing programmer on a daily basis. This book deserves a spot on every engineer's bookshelf.

The first autobiography written in English--by a brewery owner, Christian mystic, and mother of 14 named Margery Kempe, who died in the 15th century--is now available in a lively, modern translation by John Skinner. It begins with her stark conversion experience, heralded by a vision of Christ in her bedroom one night. The story follows Margery through pilgrimages across Europe and to the Holy Land, through a heresy trial in England, and her burgeoning mystical life. Similar in many ways to Showings by Julian of Norwich and the Confessions of Augustine, The Book of Margery Kempe is a beautiful description of medieval daily life and religious experience. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Though a familiar name, little was known about the English mystic Margery Kempe (c. 1373-c. 1440) for hundreds of years except that she had an association with the great Julian of Norwich. This all changed in 1934 with the discovery of The Book of Margery Kempe in a library where it had lain hidden for four hundred years. Finding Margery's own story was important not just because of the light it shed on her life, but it also turned out to be the first known autobiography in the English language. Even more intriguing to the experts of the day, this unique document was written by a woman.
But if anyone had expected to find her anything like her cloistered contemporary, Julian, they were in for something of a surprise. Far from being a typical holy woman, Margery Kempe was married and mother of fourteen children. Moreover, she had been a woman of substance, even running a large brewery for a time. After turning to religion, she traveled thousands of miles around the known world on pilgrimages to distant lands.
Beyond the circumstances of her life, what's most compelling about the text is the inner Margery that emerges. Her account of spiritual awakening, far from being a blissful episode is instead full of conflict and recrimination. What good was this new way of life if it caused her such trouble? Was this really the only way to lead a holy life? Margery remained unsure of the answers. But her patience in her struggle is a wonder to behold, and an example for us today.
Customer Reviews:
Inspirational.......2007-09-23
The reason why this book is so inspirational is because Margery is very honest throughout about how difficult she finds her spiritual path and her commitment to God, combining this with marriage, children and the persecution and ridicule she faces on her pilgrimages. It is a very rewarding read because of this and one of my favourite books.
Interesting and valuable, but..........2007-02-21
I read this for my Later Middle Ages history course, and I must admit that I didn't care for it. The book as other reviewers have said, is written over 20 years in hindsight, and Margery herself must have been an insufferable person whether her experience was true or not. It seemed to me that she brought most of her suffering upon herself and later justified it with her visions...but whether I agree with her experience is really not the point.
As the first known English autobiography, and as an insight to one of the forms that faith took in the Middle Ages (not to mention being from the female perspective) this book is invaluable. But had it not been for class I wouldn't have suffered through the 50 pages of weeping and rambling that I did (we didn't even have to read the whole thing!). Though she was a pilgrim to many holy sites, she notates almost nothing of her external experiences in Jeruselam and Rome - so I don't think that it would be particularly useful to those interested in general history.
She's the real thing.......2005-07-26
In Catholic terminology, "a mystic." In Protestant terminology, "a prophetess." Either way, Margery Kempe is the real thing. I stack her right up there with Catherine of Siena and Bridget of Sweden.
Yes, I too got a little tired of all her weeping, but this is an autobiography; she's telling the truth.
The historian side of me loved it, too. The book gives a rare glimpse of the Middle Ages and the passion Christians had in these days to make a journey to the Holy Land, even while it was in Muslim hands.
Margery Kempe was the real deal. Her struggle of faith and the persecution she endured are not far from the reality of many of us.
One word of caution: When reading the writings of a mystic or prophetess like Margery Kempe, we must keep in mind that the person is fallible. For example, at various times Margery deprived her husband of sexual intercourse in her belief that sex is impure. She, in fact, states that the Lord told her to have intercourse with her husband in order to bear more children. HMMM! She wants to deprive her husband but God is telling her to have sex!!! But let this not be a mystery. The Roman Church in the Middle Ages did have a puritanical view against sexual intercouse which was inherited (sadly) from St. Augustine. But the Church Father was wrong. The Bible states that the marriage bed can and should be pure (Hebrews 13:4) and that husbands and wives should not withhold sex from each other or stop having sex (I Corinthians 7:2-5). All this to say that when reading Margery or any other mystic, keep in mind that Scripture is used to test prophecy.
Kooky Kempe.......2005-07-11
At first, I rather enjoyed this book - Margery Kempe is quite kooky. But reading more and more, Margery just became annoying, especially with all her weeping. Is it any wonder that no one wanted to travel with her? Or that she was arrested so often? Did she really think her activities would win people to God? Or am I just guilty of being another one of her persecutors?
I expected more..........2005-04-12
Another book I read for class. I knew a little about Margery Kempe beforehand, like she had 14 children. I didn't know that the first autobiography ever written in English was so boring. I felt like Margery repeated herself, over and over. I wanted more details about her life- about her husband, her children, and her pilgrimages. I don't think I would pick this up unless you are specifically interested in early Christianity writings.
Book Description
'The Book of Margery Kempe', the earliest surviving autobiography in English (dated 1436-8), is a unique account of the extraordinary life, travels and revelations of a fifteenth-century Norfolk housewife and mother, pilgrim, prophet and visionary; it is one of the most compelling and significant English texts of the middle ages. This volume presents the original text in accessible form for modern readers, with on-page glossing and a glossary of common words. It is accompanied by on-page annotation of and commentary on the 'Book', bringing together scholarship on Kempe and setting her life in the social, political and spiritual context of her time. An introduction provides information on and context for the further interpretation of the text, and the volume is completed by a chronology of Kempe's life. [This edition previously published by Longman.] Professor BARRY WINDEATT is a Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

Book Description
Awareness of the ecclesiastical doctrine of discretio spirituum (the means of testing whether visions were truly of divine origin) was vital for medieval women visionaries. Visions and prophecy offered medieval women one of the few pathways to the religious and, in some cases, the political life of their time, but were subject to stringent checks due to the combination of women (deceitful by nature) and deceiving visions. However, those women visionaries who conformed could effectively fulfil their divine mandate to communicate their revelations. This book explores discretio spirituum in the works of a number of female visionaries: they include St Bridget of Sweden, who was eager to present her experiences as impeccably orthodox and valid; Margery Kempe, whose ambivalent reception is shown to be due to her inconsistent conformity to the doctrine; and Marguerite Porete and Joan of Arc, whose deaths by burning at the stake demonstrate the severe consequences of their failure to conform, their visions being deemed of demonic origin.Dr ROSALYNN VOADEN teaches in the Department of English at Arizona State University.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting medieval spirituality book; bad edition.......2004-05-23
Margery Kempe was an extraordinary and driven woman who lived in a time (1373~1440s) when that was nearly unheard of, and certainly not recorded for the present generation. Her book is generally accorded to be the first autobiography written in English, an amazing feat considering she was a woman, and that she could neither read nor write. In her narration to a scribe, she described her spiritual journey through life and her love of God, and in the process gives us a glimpse of the historical world that she lived in. It is translated from old english and is broken into many small, loosely-chronological chapters, each describing an aspect of some incident or journey.
If you are interested in medieval history, Christianity, mysticism or feminism, this is a great book to try. Its format might be a little hard to get into at first, because it is written in the third person and jumps about from topic to topic, but the introduction should fill you in on most aspects - the only problem is that this introduction is more geared towards sensationalizing Margery's experience, rather than celebrating it. Some readers do feel that Margery was mentally ill because of her wild devotional behaviors and her abnormal lifestyle, but it is equally regarded that her panache, courage and true love of her deity that made her so different.
Margery Kempe was an eccentric wandering pilgrim for most of the time covered in the book, and she shares her exploits such as being tried for heresy before powerful men like the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, fighting and winning the right to a chaste marriage from her husband, going on Pilgrimages to Jerusalem and Rome with a group that despised her, getting chased out of towns and made fun of by monks. It also includes the spiritual side, which include Margery's direct conversations with God, her explanations of her loud, uncontrollable crying fits, her passionate love of Jesus and her knowledge of Catholic and Biblical doctrine.
The Book of Margery Kempe has been translated and introduced by many different authors, and it would be my suggestion to find one other than this if you're interested in Margery - such as the one by Penguin Classics translated by B.A. Windeatt - ones that use research and scholarship rather than sensationalism to bolster the amazing story of this historical figure.
Worth a look for any medievalist.......2000-07-22
This book manages to be of interest to anyone who wishes a travelogue of medieval pilgrimages, a humble recognition that even the oddest among us can have their minds very occupied with the divine, a look at the first autobiography of an English woman, or a case study in obsessive compulsive behaviour. Margery's disjointed recollections, coupled with her constant references to her revelations and retroactive "virginity," admittedly are not a fun pursuit, but her extreme case does seem to place much of the deficiencies inherited from the worst in medieval spirituality (a legacy of the Plague ... even if the best of the era was the finest in history) into perspective. I guarantee that, while one may find Margery as troublesome as did those of her time and place, one will never find her recollections dull.

Book Description
The history of The Book of Margery Kempe from its first production in 1934 is also part of the history of English literary studies. Marea Mitchell traces some of the fascinating stories behind the proliferation of productions since then, including the involvement of Hope Emily Allen and other independent women scholars, popular receptions of the Book in World War II, and current productions that locate it as part of a medieval literary canon. Working from a cultural materialist perspective, Mitchell focuses on the materiality of the text itself and of the bodies of scholarship that have arisen around it.
