Modeling and Simulation have become endeavors central to all disciplines of science and engineering. They are used in the analysis of physical systems where they help us gain a better understanding of the functioning of our physical world. They are also important to the design of new engineering systems where they enable us to predict the behavior of a system before it is ever actually built. Modeling and simulation are the only techniques available that allow us to analyze arbitrarily non-linear systems accurately and under varying experimental conditions. Continuous System Modeling introduces the student to an important subclass of these techniques. They deal with the analysis of systems described through a set of ordinary or partial differential equations or through a set of difference equations. This volume introduces concepts of modeling physical systems through a set of differential and/or difference equations. The purpose is twofold: it enhances the scientific understanding of our physical world by codifying (organizing) knowledge about this world, and it supports engineering design by allowing us to assess the consequences of a particular design alternative before it is actually built. This text has a flavor of the mathematical discipline of dynamical systems, and is strongly oriented towards Newtonian physical science.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A high resolution, multi-level, primitive equation ocean model is used to investigate the combined role of wind forcing, thermohaline gradients, and coastline irregularities on the formation of currents, meanders, eddies, and filaments in the California Current System (CCS) from 22.5 deg N to 47.5 deg N. An additional objective is to further characterize the formation of the Davidson Current, seasonal variability off Baja California, and the meandering jet south of Cape Blanco. The model includes a realistic coastline and is forced from rest using climatological winds, temperatures, and salinities. The migration pattern of the North Pacific Subtropical High plays a significant role in the generation and evolution of CCS structures. In particular, variations in wind stress induce flow instabilities which are enhanced by coastline perturbations. An inshore train of cyclonic eddies, combined with a poleward undercurrent of varying seasonal depths, forms a discontinuous countercurrent called the Davidson Current north of Point Conception. Off Baja, the equator-ward surface jet strengthens (weakens) during spring and summer (fall and winter). Model results also substantiate Point Eugenia as a persistent cyclonic eddy generation area. The model equator-ward jet south of Cape Blanco is a relatively continuous feature, meandering offshore and onshore, and divides coastally influenced water from water of offshore origin.

This monograph is dedicated to a novel approach for uniform modeling of timed and hybrid systems. The author introduces a time model that allows for both the description of discrete time steps and continuous processes with a discrete time model with infinitesimal step widths.
The underlying mathematical structure of this time model is based on the concepts of non-standard analysis. The discrete modeling, i.e., the description of sequential discrete algorithms at different abstraction levels, is done using the abstract state machines formalism.
The presentation is well balanced between theoretical elaboration and critical discussion of the applicability of the theoretical results by means of appropriate case studies. The new temporal semantics proposed helps theoreticians as well as practitioners in gaining a better understanding of time models and in building better notations, models, and tools for the formal treatment of systems where time matters.

The focus of this study is the coastal region from 300 N to 42.50 N, a portion of the Canary Current System (CCS). To study the generation, evolution, and sustainment of the currents, meanders, eddies and filaments of the CCS, the model is forced from rest using seasonal climatological winds. To investigate - the role of irregular coastline geometry, the first experiment uses climatological wind forcing along an idealized "straightened" coastline, while the second experiment uses the same wind forcing along an irregular coastline. In both cases a surface current, undercurrent, meanders, eddies, and filaments are generated. The results obtained while using the irregular, rather than the idealized coastline, however, show preferred eddy generation locations as well as enhanced growth of meanders, eddies, and filaments. The features produced by the model are consistent with available observations of the CCS. The model results support the hypothesis that both wind forcing and irregular coastline geometry are important mechanisms in the generation of many of the observed features of the CCS.

This paper examines fundamental principles of continuous authentication (CA) and proposes a four-tier CA architecture to secure financial information systems. We define CA as a process that verifies the identity of an information systems user continuously for the entire duration of an authorized session. While organizations can, in theory, strengthen the security of their financial information systems through CA, several challenges need to be addressed in designing a CA architecture. A primary challenge involves the constantly changing user profiles in globally networked business environments. Profile content may include user knowledge and characteristics, access location, job characteristics, and transaction attributes. We propose swarm intelligence, which has the capacity to handle complex profile changes, as a technology for implementing CA in a dynamic, distributed network environment where user profiles are constantly changing. The paper explores model implementation challenges and discusses opportunities for future research.

Col Aldrin shares not only his personal insite of the space race and space flight mechanics, but offers his intellect and wisdom on the future of mankind. The book is a must read for all space exploration enthusists and would be adventure seekers. Col Aldrin is truely the cutting edge of man's reaching out in the universe. Highly recomended read.
The best book on the Apollo program I have read.......2004-12-02
When there is a discussion regarding the creation of a vast new technology, proponents generally use the phrase, "Manhattan project for _________." This is of course a reference to the vast project that led to the development of the atomic bomb. It surprises me that this is used rather than a reference to the Apollo project that put people on the moon. To date, no one has found a use for nuclear weapons other than destruction, but the technical and psychological benefits of the American space program were tremendous. Both projects were enormous in scope and success required the invention of whole new technologies.
Buzz Aldrin was one of three astronauts in the Apollo 11 mission and the second man to walk on the moon. He was a fighter pilot, but like the rest of the early astronaut corps, combined that with a great deal of intelligence. Buzz earned a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in manned space rendezvous. Therefore, he understands a great deal of the theory behind the movement of space vehicles, which was very helpful in the early days of trying to rendezvous with another space vehicle.
This book is his recollection of the American space program; from the time the first German V2 delivered a deadly warhead to the ignominious aftermath of the Apollo program. His fundamental understanding of many of the principles of space flight is evident, making this different from most of the other histories of the American space program. He also creates two parallel time tracks, one describing the American successes and the other the actions of the Soviets.
Those who understand the history of the times realize that the greatest single impetus for the American space program occurred in the Soviet Union. Their launching of the Sputnik satellite and then the more incredible event of orbiting Yuri Gagarin created a great deal of anxiety in the United States and led to the "space race." While it was a source of great national pride and tremendous technical advancement, the space programs of the two superpowers was just another area of competition. Aldrin explains, as best he could in 1989, how the Soviet Union was able to accomplish what it did. Since most Soviet records were still unavailable at that time, there are many occasions when he resorts to informed speculation.
Aldrin was selected for the astronaut corps in 1963, while the Mercury project was still active. He describes the talent of the astronauts, as well as their fiercely competitive camaraderie. These people were fighter pilots and combat veterans. While they competed with the enemy for their lives and with their fellow pilots for advancement and glory, they also shared the common bonds of people who choose the life of danger. This is the best book about the Apollo program that I have read. Aldrin's combination of astronaut insider and knowledge of the technical details is what made it that way.

This book is almost as good as Buzz's first book--Return To Earth from early 70's. Dr. Aldrin at least takes his time and makes the effort to share the Apollo 11 experience with us and also what was happening [space related] in America and in RUSSIA during Cold War/ Space race era, and compares the two " superpowers'" and what was happening at both places at same time intervals in the 60's. The author of this book went to the the moon but unfortunately the book still lurches in Earth orbit. Yes, the book is hard to get and my grateful thanks to Amazon for getting me a copy. Despite the splendor of the subject matter the book was a tough read. Too dry, too technical, too lost in words. Where was the personal touch? Where was Aldrin's inspiring rehabilitation from alcholism, the personal difficulties, the controversy over who would walk first on the moon. The latter makes it in print, but only just, and one can't quite help but feel with much selective editing. For real space buffs only.

Verne's 1865 tale of a trip to the moon is (as you'd expect from Verne) great fun, even if bits of it now seem, in retrospect, a little strange. Our rocket ship gets shot out of a cannon? To the moon? Goodness!
But in other ways it's full of eerie bits of business that turned out to be very near reality: he had the cost, when you adjust for inflation, almost exactly right. There are other similarities, too. Verne's cannon was named the Columbiad; the Apollo 11 command module was named Columbia. Apollo 11 had a three-person crew, just as Verne's did; and both blasted off from the American state of Florida. Even the return to earth happened in more-or-less the same place.
Coincidence -- or fact!? We say you'll have to read this story yourself to judge.

Unfortunately, From the Earth to the Moon always struck me as being on the rather dull side, so it took me a while to get through it the first time I read it. I can't really recommend this to many, except perhaps those interested in the history of science fiction, or really big Verne fans. The story of the first trip to Earth's satellite.

Jules Verne, the father of science fiction, made several predictions
that came true in this book. The book is exciting from cover to cover.
It deserves more credit than it seems to be getting. It was written over
one hundred years ago. I would recommend this book to any science fiction

An Obsolete Translation--Barnes&Noble ISBN:0760765197.......2006-06-11
This translation, one of the Barnes and Noble "Classics Editions", is the 1874 English translation by Edward Roth, a Philadelphia school-teacher. In no sense a translation, it is more a parody or retelling of the French original with many embelishments and additions by the author. The editor is Aaron Parett, an English professor from Montana. In an appendix the editor mentions that for furthur reading one might try the complete translation by Walter James Miller, "The Annotated Jules Verne: From the Earth to the Moon" published by Crowell: 1978 and reprinted by Gramercy: 1995. A Good Read.......2005-08-09
My boyfriend bought From the Earth to the Moon, and since he is an Astrophysics student I expected that he would have enjoyed finding about people's conceptions about going to the moon at that early time. He however summed up the book by saying that it contained a lot of basic things didn't make much sense. Well, from a layman's perspective I found from the Earth to the Moon engaging. It goes into the technical aspects of going to the moon and involves a reasonable amount of logic, Physics and Astronomy. Even from my scientifically deprived perspective, a lot of things in the book didn't make much sense, such as the actual method of getting to the moon, but this doesn't really take away from the book - it adds greatly to its appeal. The book contained some bizarre bits of humour and its whimsical nature never bordered into the ridiculous. I was kept wondering how much of this was actually going to work, and what these poor souls were going to come up with next. Compared to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and even Journey to the Centre of the Earth however, From the Earth to the Moon is noticeably less imaginative. Verne uses everyday objects and ideas to make his ideas a reality, and much unlike his other works, doesn't stray far from the earthly. Some people may feel cheated by the predictable conclusion, but all in all From the Earth to the Moon is a good read. If you drop at the sight of f(x) = y, then this book is not for you because it involves some logical thinking, Centripetal forces and the like which may be hard to assimilate. If you really know your Physics theory then you may not appreciate the book either because of the theoretical meanderings that may have limited basis today. If you, like me are somewhere in the middle of these two extremes then From the Earth to the Moon is definitely worth your time.

Stoppard is a wonderful playwright, but these are not some of his best plays. The collection is good, but I recommend buying some of his better plays even though they're not in an easy format like this, simply because it's better worth your money. If you already own those, however, this book will make a fine addition to your collection.

Worst Publication I Have Ever Seen.......2007-09-14
While the novels themselves are wonderful, this publication of the two novels is horrible. I have never read a book that was put together more sloppy than this. The cover is an ugly yellow / white and since all the text is white, the last part of the title on the spine can't even be read. I can't even count how many spelling and punctuation errors I've found. Names are sometimes spelled with lower case letters and occasionally there will be a period in the middle of a sentence. It also lacks the ability to print any special characters; the British Pound symbol is simply a capital L. In place of the degree symbol they use @ (Which gets very annoying after the twentieth time. There are literally dozens of latitude and longitude measurements and every single one uses @ symbol) In one chapter explaining the algebra behind the passenger's voyage it actually says "
." The errors and character replacements in this were so annoying that it made it nearly impossible to read. The publisher, BiblioBazaar, should be ashamed to have released something so pathetic.
On a side note, the novels themselves are highly recommended.

The author has retranslated and EXTENSIVELY annotated Verne's original story. You'll learn all sorts of fascinating detail about the history and science of the era. Well worth a few nights of insomnia

This book is really amazing when you finally sit back and think about the era in which it was written! There are, of coarse, scientific inaccuracies, but it is clear that Mr. Verne did his homework before writing this book - something that is clear in all of his books! Unfortunatly, despite the amazing conjecture that is put forth by this book, it is not as well written as most of the other classics. However, if you like science than this book is most likely a must read!

The best annotated translation 1978, reprinted 1995.......2006-06-12
In the 1960's Walter James Miller discovered that the conventional translations of Verne's novels omitted at least 20% of the stories, and made in addition many textual and factual blunders. To correct this in 1978 Crowell published his new translation, an annotated version which contains many footnotes and illustrations of the period relating to the science of the time. It also restores Verne's reputation as as a scientific author as well as a fictional story teller. Out of print for many years, it has been reprinted by Gramercy: 1995, which should enlarge the pool of books available for purchase.
