Book Description
This book contains articles corresponding to some of the talks delivered at the Foundations of Computational Mathematics (FoCM) conference at IMPA in Rio de Janeiro in January 1997. FoCM brings together a novel constellation of subjects in which the computational process itself and the foundational mathematical underpinnings of algorithms are the objects of study. The conference was organized around nine workshops: systems of algebraic equations and computational algebraic geometry, homotopy methods and real machines, information based complexity, numerical linear algebra, approximation and PDE's, optimization, differential equations and dynamical systems, relations to computer science and vision and related computational tools. The book gives the reader an idea of the state of the art in this emerging discipline.

Book Description
This book forms a valuable guide to the direction in which current numerical analysis research is heading. It will be of particular interest to graduate students and researchers concerned with the theoretical and practical issues associated with scientific computation. The main topics include ordinary and partial differential equations, fluid flow, optimization, linear algebra, and approximation theory. Two recurring themes are the need for adaptive and structure preserving numerical methods. The work presented here has a list of direct applications that include colliding black holes, molecular dynamics, blow-up problems, and card shuffling.

Book Description
This volume contains the texts of the four series of lectures presented by B.Cockburn, C.Johnson, C.W. Shu and E.Tadmor at a C.I.M.E. Summer School. It is aimed at providing a comprehensive and up-to-date presentation of numerical methods which are nowadays used to solve nonlinear partial differential equations of hyperbolic type, developing shock discontinuities. The most effective methodologies in the framework of finite elements, finite differences, finite volumes spectral methods and kinetic methods, are addressed, in particular high-order shock capturing techniques, discontinuous Galerkin methods, adaptive techniques based upon a-posteriori error analysis.

Other Books.......2007-09-03
Riding on the back of the fantasy role playing game craze came these interesting books, and plenty more popped up along with them on other topics, from other publishers.
They were designed so that all you would need was a pencil and a simple randomiser and be able to carry the whole thing around with you, and introduce the game and chance into it.
A Dungeon bash, of course.
That other guy has got it wrong.......2004-03-03
This isn't a strategy guide at all. It is the original Fighting Fantasy Gamebook. Silly man. Check what you're reviewing before you post.
excellent, with one exception.......1999-08-24
The Strategy guide offers everything it promises and more, with one exception. This is the strategy guide for the playstation version, NOT the PC. If you want the PC version, DON'T puchase this book, for the first board is entirely different and I'm not sure what else is changed in the playstation verson until I get my Map Book version. In short, Don't get suckered like I did!!!!!!!
Fighting Fantasy No 6; Deathtrap Dungeon.......1998-04-06
Deathtrap Dungeon, written in 1984 by Ian Livingstone, was the sixth edition to the growing Fighting Fantasy series. This adventure is set, like most of the earlier FF books, in the medieval fantasy land of Allansia. There is a successful town in north Allansia called Fang. It's ruler, a certain Baron Sukumvit, decided to make Fang the centre of a great contest, to be held once each year, called the 'Trail of Champions'. Now, this Trail of Champions involved the Baron tunneling a deadly labyrinth into the hills behind the town. The labyrinth, named Deathtrap Dungeon (if you didn't already know), was then riddled with fiendish traps and vicious monsters to trick and test any contestants trying their luck. Just before the grand opening, Sukumvit selected ten of his finest troops to enter the dungeon, as a test of it's lethality. Much to the Baron's delight; none of the troops were ever seen again! The call then went out to adventurers all over Allansia. Many adventurers were eager to test their skills in Deathtrap Dungeon, for the honour of being the first to survive the labyrinth and collect their own weight in gold as a reward. As yet, none have survived to claim the prize...Until now, that is!! You start as an adventurer, signed up for the Trail of Champions, the eve before the contest starts. The next day, you line up outside Deathtrap Dungeon, ready to start your adventure. Five other contestants enter the dungeon with you. These are: an armoured Knight, a robed Ninja, a female Elf Warrior and two 'Arnold Schwarzenegger look-a-like' Barbarians. So, the race is on! To succeed in your goal you have to beat the other contestants (by fair or foul means), avoid becoming a victim of the many cunningly lethal traps, find and collect various items, vital if you are to escape alive, find your way through quite a complex maze and hack-'n'-slash your way through loads of Deathtrap Dungeon's inhuman inhabitants (this is my favourite part!!) For 'true' diehard FF fans; this book is a real roller-coaster ride. The book is original, well written, engaging and (fairly) complex. The book has some nice parts to it: Stumbling onto the remains of past contestants, impaled on spikes, ending up as stew for the Boodbeast, meeting the 'Trial Masters', Poison Ivy and those playful Trogoldytes (no, I won't tell you! You'll have to find out about them for yourself!!) There are some really nice 'adult' traps and ways to die as well; the 'Vice' trap and drinking the acid, which burns a hole in your stomach, are real corkers. As for bad parts......Well, I couldn't really think of any. This book is a very good edition to the FF series. Not being linear (like a lot of later books) the dungeon can be explored many times differently. The ending is especially challenging and exciting. Iain McCaig's illustrations are of the usual excellent quality; they really bring Deathtrap Dungeon alive, adding immeasurably to the atmosphere of the book. In fact, without his contribution, the book probably wouldn't of been so well received So, in my ending summary of number six; Deathtrap Dungeon. I would say that it is an absolute classic; this book is about as good as FF gets!

Engrossing comic mystery.......2004-06-13
Ira Levin is a master of the novel and the stage play. He has brought us ingenious classics like The Stepford Wives, Rosemary's Baby, A Kiss Before Dying, and Veronica's Room to name just a few. Most of his works have translated brilliantly to film and are fun, clever, engrossing reads.
Deathtrap is a wonderful comic thriller, which I wish I had a chance to see play out on stage. It's a fun mystery that is as twisted as a pretzel with a fun and suspenseful climax. The first act ends with the big twist, one I did not see coming, leading the way for a completely different, but just as fun second act. Not many surprises in the second act, but it is just as fun.
To talk about this any more is to give away all the delicious things in store, so I will let you see for yourself how wonderful this play truly is. Read Deathtrap, then do yourself a favor and buy everything Ira Levin has written. You might thank yourself in the morning.
A classic thriller where fiction becomes fact and then . . ........2002-04-09
What makes this play superb is captured right in the title: "Deathtrap: A Thriller in Two Acts." This is because the thrill of the first act is replaced by a twistedly different thrill in the second act. In Westport, Connecticut, we find playwright Sidney Bruhl and his loving wife Myra. Unfortunately, the well has run dry for Sidney who desperately needs a hit play and come not come up with anything. But then Sidney shows Myra "Deathtrap." It is, he explains, "A thriller in two acts. One set, five characters. A juicy murder in Act One, unexpected developments in Act Two. Sound construction, good dialogue, laughs in the right places. Highly commercial." With that blatant self-description author Ira Levin gives us the first of many nudge-nudge, wink-winks. You see, the only problem with "Deathtrap" is that Sidney did not write the play. It was written by Clifford Anderson, one of the "twerps" from Sidney's playwriting seminar. But maybe Sidney can find a way of making the play his own, even if it is over young Mr. Anderson's dead body.
Of course, Levin has already told us what is going to happen in the play, but as to who will be the victim of the first act's juicy murder, well, that is just the beginning of the fun. After all, there are still two other characters to be met and one of them is a Dutch psychic. "Deathtrap" is a roller-coaster ride that alternately amuses and terrifies, which is exactly what you want from a thriller. Best of all, you never catch up to the twists and turns. If there is a lesson to be learned here, then it is simply that nothing is more dangerous than a good idea.
i want to see this one performed!.......1999-11-23
Deathtrap is so much fun to read, I would just love to see it done as a play. It would be so fun to be in it, too! There are rarely thrillers anymore, and this one manages to be twisty, funny, scary and even not seem dated. Ira Levin has crafted something clever and cool here, and I hope I can see it done well someday, so that I can be one of the people screaming in the theater, or one of the actors causing them.
An absolutely spellbinding play!.......1999-01-24
Having played the part of Clifford Anderson in a local production of Deathtrap, I was fortunate enough to hear the audience's reactions to the plot's twists and turns night in and night out. This show combines terror and humor in a way that really keeps people on the edge of their seat. I very highly recommend this work, and if you have a chance to see it performed live, do so, or if that's not possible, rent the movie. You won't be disappointed!
An Absolutely Outstanding Play.......1998-08-01
Possibly Ira Levin's best play, this is up there with "Rosemary's Baby." It is a very suspenseful and surprising story of a down-on-his-luck playwright, his wife, and an amateur writer who plays an important role. Filled with plays within plays within plays, countless "heart-in-the-mouth" shocks, and a surprising amount of dark humor, you will never forget this play once you have read it.

Book Description
MARS ATTACKS(c): Cards, comics . . . and now brand-new, all-original novels of unthinkable terror!
MURDER MANSION
The invasion was quick and merciless. Nothing on Earth could counter the superior technology of the interplanetary aggressors. Their first strike left worldwide defenses utterly useless. The unbeatable Martian war machine swept the countryside, spreading a reign of terror in every direction. And one small group of humans sought safety in bizarre Gelman mansion built by an eccentric millionaire.
MARTIAN DEATHTRAP pits a desperate band of human defenders against a merciless Martian Death Squad. The battleground is a huge mansion filled with a labyrinth of secret passages with giant insects--and certain death-- lurking outside. For the Martians, the mission is to secure the captured ground by whatever means necessary. For the humans, the goal is to beat the odds and simply
survive . . .
Customer Reviews:
Curious About This One.......2007-08-28
I read it and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a refreshing read. The author started the book off in a way I expected him to. Then he took it in another direction, to keep control of the grandness of the invasion, and I thought that direction was very clever, indeed.
If you like comic book blood & gore then this is for you........2006-10-31
This novel starts out resonably straight forward when a group of people are trapped in an old mansion during an all out attack by Martians. At first it seems like everything favours the survival of these people despite the superior Martian technology and then the deaths start...
This novel is easy to read - in fact it based on a comic book style ensures that somewhat. It starts out easy but by the end of the book its a bloodbath. If you don't like seeing characters you like killed off at random then avoid this book, but if blood and gore and stomping on Martians is your thing then you may enjoy it.
Enjoyable trash.......2006-08-12
Having just finished HG Wells' War of the Worlds, I thought it would be appropriate to check out the other side of the coin by going from serious Martian invasion to pure Martian pulp. You cannot get pulpier than Mars Attacks. It's totally disposable, just like all good pulp.
Written by Nathan Archer (who has cranked out a few Predator books in the past) the story follows a group of tourists, led by a biker, who have sought shelter in an old mansion built by an eccentric industrial tycoon. With loads of secret passages and rooms they think they are safe from the Martian invasion until giant, Martian-created insects turn up.
Unable to control the insects, the Martians seek refuge inside the mansion too. But they are kind of wimpy and have not got a clue what the mansion is supposed to be. The story jumps back and forth between the humans and the Martians (who, strangely, seem to have Arabic names) and their various misadventures of blasting each other to pieces. Nothing life-changing but fun if you're up for it.
I might check out the follow-up some time, but I'm not going to go out of my way. But if you are a Mars Attacks fan (not including the awful Tim Burton movie) then go for it.
A mansion filled with Martian mayhem.......2005-03-09
Bud and his buddies are out riding their motorcycles when their afternoon joyride is canceled by an alien invasion. It seems that the probes we have sent to Mars have irked its inhabitants and they decide to attack first, blasting into oblivion every Earthling they happen upon. Bud and two surviving companions narrowly escape a gruesome death, running into the surrounding woods. While the Martians pelt that area with some kind of bioweapons, Bud lead his companions through the woods towards the only nearby shelter, the famous Gelman Mansion. A rich man's folly, the mansion is an intricate maze of rooms and passageways turned museum (a sort of ficitionalized version of San Jose's famous Winchester Mystery House) where, in a contrived coincedence, Bud used to work as a tour guide. Once at the mansion Bud and his companions discover another group of survivors. The Martians in the ship that attacked Bud discover the mansion and send out a small unit to investigate. Who will survive and what will be left of them?
Martian Deathtrap as all the depth one would expect from a book based on a series of trading cards. In other words, not much. None of the characters really acts or behaves in a realistic manner and, to be honest, almost all of them are in the story simply to die gruesomely at the hands of the Martian invaders or the insects made giant and deadly by the aliens' bio-weapondry. The Martians are also comically unaware of Earth customs, so some humor can be found in their lack of understanding the strange environment. Overflowing with gore and sprinkled with comedy, the book is passable entertainment. But readers wanting more emotional depth in their alien invaders yarns had better look elsewhere.
Human-The other white meat.......2002-03-04
Wonderful book. Reads like a comic book from the 50s, but lots of blood and gore, be warned. You will like this if you like the
