Computational Quantum Mechanics for Materials Engineers: The EMTO Method and Applications (Engineering Materials and Processes)
Levente Vitos Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1846289505 |
Book Description
Traditionally, new materials have been developed by empirically correlating their chemical composition, and the manufacturing processes used to form them, with their properties. Until recently, metallurgists have not used quantum theory for practical purposes. However, the development of modern density functional methods means that today, computational quantum mechanics can help engineers to identify and develop novel materials.
Computational Quantum Mechanics for Materials Engineers describes new approaches to the modelling of disordered alloys that combine the most efficient quantum-level theories of random alloys with the most sophisticated numerical techniques to establish a theoretical insight into the electronic structure of complex materials such as stainless steels, Hume-Rothery alloys and silicates. The practical success of these approaches to applications in all of these areas are covered in detail. The new EMTO-CPA method is detailed, including its application in alloys to model structural stability and elastic properties of random alloys of arbitrary composition and the effect of alloying elements on elastic stiffnesses stacking fault energies and structural parameters. The EMTO-CPA method makes new approaches to computational alloy design feasible. Computational Quantum Mechanics for Materials Engineers shows how the technique will soon allow materials engineers to become "quantum blacksmiths".
Computational Quantum Mechanics for Materials Engineers will interest researchers and postgraduate students in materials science and engineering, solid-state physics and applied quantum mechanics.

Defects and Surface-Induced Effects in Advanced Perovskites (NATO Science Partnership Sub-Series: 3:)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792362160 |
Book Description
Complex oxide materials, especially the ABO 3-type perovskite materials, have been attracting growing scientific interest due to their unique electro-optical properties, leading to photorefractive effects that form the basis for such devices as holographic storage, optical data processing and phase conjugation. The optical and mechanical properties of non-metals are strongly affected by the defects and impurities that are unavoidable in any real material. Nanoscopically sized surface effects play an important role, especially in multi-layered ABO 3 structures, which are good candidates for high capacity memory cells.

Kinetics of Metal-Gas Interactions at Low Temperatures: Hydriding, Oxidation, Poisoning (Springer Series in Surface Sciences)
Eckehard Fromm Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540639756 |
Book Description
Kinetics of Metal-Gas Interactions at Low Temperatures is devoted to the formation of a natural oxide film. This few nm thick surface layer is produced instantaneously if oxygen or water vapor is present in the gas atmosphere. It is responsible for the corrosion behavior, for wear and friction of metallic materials, as well as for hydrogen embrittlement or poisoning of catalytic surface reactions. Oxidation impedes experiments in surface sciences and production processes in modern thin-film technology. It can reliably be avoided only if expensive ultra-high vacuum techniques are applied. This monograph presents an introduction to the subject in a tutorial style. It demonstrates how complex metal-gas interactions can be analyzed by standard procedures of chemical kinetics.

Materials Fundamentals of Gate Dielectrics
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1402030770 |
Book Description
This book presents the fundamentals of novel gate dielectrics that are being introduced into semiconductor manufacturing to ensure the continuous scaling of CMOS devices. As this is a rapidly evolving field of research we choose to focus on the materials that determine the performance of device applications. Most of these materials are transition metal oxides. Ironically, the d-orbitals responsible for the high dielectric constant cause severe integration difficulties, thus intrinsically limiting high-k dielectrics. Though new in the electronics industry many of these materials are well-known in the field of ceramics, and we describe this unique connection. The complexity of the structure-property relations in TM oxides requires the use of state-of-the-art first-principles calculations. Several chapters give a detailed description of the modern theory of polarization, and heterojunction band discontinuity within the framework of the density functional theory. Experimental methods include oxide melt solution calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry, Raman scattering and other optical characterization techniques, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
Many of the problems encountered in the world of CMOS are also relevant for other semiconductors such as GaAs. A comprehensive review of recent developments in this field is thus also given. The book will be of interest to those actively engaged in gate dielectric research, and to graduate students in Materials Science, Materials Physics, Materials Chemistry, and Electrical Engineering.

Oxide Surfaces - The Chemical Physics of Solid Surfaces : Growth and Properties of Ultrathin Epitaxial Layers
Manufacturer: Elsevier Science Pub Co ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0444827684 |
Book Description
Hardbound. Although there has been steady progress in understanding aspects of epitaxial growth throughout the last 30 years of modern surface science, work in this area has intensified greatly in the last 5 years. A number of factors have contributed to this expansion. One has been the general trend in surface science to tackle problems of increasing complexity as confidence is gained in the methodology, so for example, the role of oxide/metal interfaces in determining the properties of many practical supported catalysts is now being explored in greater detail. A second factor is the recognition of the potential importance of artificial multilayer materials not only in semiconductor devices but also in metal/metal systems because of their novel magnetic properties. Perhaps even more important than either of these application areas, however, is the newly-discovered power of scanning probe microscopies, and most notably scanning tunneling microscopy (STM),

Oxide Surfaces - The Chemical Physics of Solid Surfaces : Oxide Surfaces (The Chemical Physics of Solid Surfaces)
Manufacturer: Elsevier Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0444507450 |
Book Description
Hardbound. The book is a multi-author survey (in 15 chapters) of the current state of knowledge and recent developments in our understanding of oxide surfaces. The author list includes most of the acknowledged world experts in this field. The material covered includes fundamental theory and experimental studies of the geometrical, vibrational and electronic structure of such surfaces, but with a special emphasis on the chemical properties and associated reactivity. The main focus is on metal oxides but coverage extends from 'simple' rocksalt materials such as MgO through to complex transition metal oxides with different valencies. While there have been major advances in understanding surfaces in general through the application of modern atomistic and microscopic methods over the last 20 years, the emphasis has been on metal and semiconductor surfaces. While oxide surfaces have long been known to be extremely important, they have not received as much atten
