Customer Reviews:
Good book with few flaws.......2007-01-09
The book is great for understanding the title subject. But it has too many references which distracts the reader. Also, many times, the corresponding picture of a particular topic covered is not in the same page as the topic. This requires going back and forth between pages. The problems at the end of each chapter are really good and checks the understanding of the subject thoroughly.
Outstanding..........2005-05-06
This is probably the best book of its kind in the vast and multidisciplinary field of drug design and action. Richard Silverman is an acclaimed chemistry Professor at Northwestern University, and in this book, he provides the most comprehensive and lucid exposition of the chemical basis of drug action that I have seen. No matter how complicated biological systems and their interactions are, at the basic level, it's all chemistry, and mostly organic chemistry. An organic chemist will find this book extremely illuminating in a way that would not have been made clear through his traditional education.
The book opens with a short but clear discussion of drug discovery, combinatorial chemistry, and clinical testing and trials. Then it leads the reader through a variety of enzyme catalyzed reactions, with examples of major drugs studded all the way. Silverman shows us how nature is the master organic chemist, employing the familiar reactions of chemistry in an unsurpassed way. The chapter on enzyme inhibition is long and detailed, and it's breathtaking. Which is important because almost all major drugs act by inhibiting enzymes. The examples which Silverman chooses to illustrate are both important (including many bestselling anti-cancer, anti-viral, and antibiotic drugs to name a few), as well as very interesting. The last parts of the book deal with DNA binding drugs, and with pathways of drug metabolism and excretion. Along all the way, the emphasis is on the chemical reactions that drugs undergo, which after all is what controls their properties. The lucidity of the book is such that a beginning graduate well-versed with the basic principles of general and organic chemistry can easily understand all the contents.
This book is so interesting and illuminating that it's one of the very few academic books which I have actually read from the first to the last page, with every word in between. In fact, it even makes great bedside reading! Truly a must-have book for all chemists and biologists of every kind, interested in how drugs work.
Excellent.......2004-04-05
This is an excellent book and it lies on the smaller physical side of organic chemistry, as the title says, instead of the huge biochemical side. It really was a fascinating book.
Check out the new edition of this book.......2004-02-04
There is a new considerably expanded and updated edition available of Silverman's already classic text as of Jan/04. ISBN is 0-12-643732-7. Check it out... price is comparable to the earlier edition.
Compulsory book for every biochemistry student.......2001-04-20
This book is very good introduction in the major aspects of the chemistry of the drugs. It explains with good schemes the reactions of drugs and others important mechanisms. The book is scientifically well written and enjouyable to read. The graphic images of molecules integrate well with the written aspects of book. Book covers major areas of pharmaceutical drug research, integrates the chemical and pharmacological aspects of drugs, and discusses the essentials of drug activity and mechanisms.

Book Description
This is the first book to describe the scientific basis for the action of plant polyphenols in a wide range of technologically important phenomena. The book opens with a general summary of polyphenolic structure and a discussion of the physical and chemical basis of noncovalent molecular interactions and the means by which polyphenols initiate the many and varied properties they display. There has been a big increase in interest in our ability to understand the importance of polyphenols in areas as diverse as agriculture, ecology and food selection, foodstuffs and nutrition, beverages (astringency and bitterness), natural medicines (the so-called "French paradox"), floral pigmentation, natural glues and varnishes and the age-old methods for the manufacture of leather. The role of polyphenols in all of these areas is discussed.

Book Description
The goal of bioorganic chemistry is to mimic biological processes such as enzyme action, through the synthesis of chemical models with the tools of the organic chemist. This widely-praised textbook is especially suited for the advanced undergraduate or graduate student in chemistry, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacology. The third edition has been substantially revised to reflect new research in the field, and features a major new chapter on self- assembly, auto-organization, and molecular devices. The outstanding figures continue to be a highlight of the book, and were described in an earlier edition as "accurate stereochemical structures...that are the best I've seen for showing the organic chemistry of biomolecules." (Quart. Rev. Biol.)

Didier Besset's Object-Oriented Implementation of Numerical Methods offers a wide-ranging set of objects for common numerical algorithms. Written for the math-literate Java and Smalltalk programmer, this volume demonstrates that both languages can be used to tackle common numerical calculations with ease.
This title bridges the gap between pure algorithms and object design. By tackling issues like class design, interfaces, and overcoming floating-point rounding errors in both Java and Smalltalk, the code can be used as-is or as a model for your own custom numerical classes.
The range of recipes, or sample numerical classes, all coded in both OOPLs, is rich. For anyone who's taken a few undergraduate math courses (like calculus, linear algebra, or statistics), plenty of the material will be familiar. After presenting some basic algorithm and mathematical principles, the book shows you the code that gets the job done (first in Smalltalk and then in Java). There's no room for demo code that shows how to use all this. The emphasis is on a good cross-section of common numerical calculations. The tour begins with calculus and moves through linear algebra, with plenty of material on matrices. Later sections on statistics cover familiar terms and calculations such as linear regression and calculations useful for establishing correlations between one or more independent variables. Sections on data mining examine the mathematical rules for finding patterns in large amounts of data. (There's also a nifty set of classes for implementing genetic algorithms.) Throughout, you get advice on choosing the right algorithm for the job. (There are class diagrams that map out how this class library is organized.)
Of course, it will help to know some of the underlying math to get the most out of this intelligent and wide-ranging book, but the writing is remarkably clear and the source code is a model of intelligibility, so even readers who are averse to equations will find Object-Oriented Implementation of Numerical Methods readable. In general, any competent Java or Smalltalk programmer will be able to tap into solid mathematical code by reading it, without having to reinvent the proverbial wheel. --Richard Dragan

Book Description
Numerical methods naturally lend themselves to an object-oriented approach. Mathematics builds high- level ideas on top of previously described, simpler ones. Once a property is demonstrated for a given concept, it can be applied to any new concept sharing the same premise as the original one, similar to the ideas of reuse and inheritance in object-oriented (OO) methodology.
Few books on numerical methods teach developers much about designing and building good code. Good computing routines are problem-specific. Insight and understanding are what is needed, rather than just recipes and black box routines. Developers need the ability to construct new programs for different applications.
Object-Oriented Implementation of Numerical Methods reveals a complete OO design methodology in a clear and systematic way. Each method is presented in a consistent format, beginning with a short explanation and following with a description of the general OO architecture for the algorithm. Next, the code implementations are discussed and presented along with real-world examples that the author, an experienced software engineer, has used in a variety of commercial applications.
On the enclosed CD-ROM, you'll find files containing tested source code implementations of all the algorithms discussed in the book in both Java and Smalltalk. This includes repository files for VisualAge for Java and VisualAge for Smalltalk under ENVY.
* Reveals the design methodology behind the code, including design patterns where appropriate, rather than just presenting canned solutions.
* Implements all methods side by side in both Java and Smalltalk. This contrast can significantly enhance your understanding of the nature of OO programming languages.
* Provides a step-by-step pathway to new object-oriented techniques for programmers familiar with using procedural languages such as C or Fortran for numerical methods.
* Includes a chapter on data mining, a key application of numerical methods.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing Introduction to the Implementation of Numerical Methods.......2005-09-01
As a mathematically oriented programmer I found no interesting ideas in this book. The content and treatment of the material is a bit too simplistic and, when viewed as an introduction, it looks unattractive.
Also, as a Smalltalk programmer, I was disappointed with the way algorithms are implemented. The author makes no attempt to take advantage of the wonderful expressiveness of the Smalltalk language. Classes and methods have been given awkward names; the source code is not elegant; basic objects such as matrices and polynomials are insufficiently modeled and treated as mere data structures; algorithms are not viewed as objects but as conventional procedures. Because of the flatness of the approach the resulting programming style is ugly when compared to Smalltalk standards. The eloquence and richness of pure object orientation is not achieved or suggested. SUnit tests, which would have fitted perfectly in all chapters, have been ignored everywhere.
Excellent book.......2001-01-10
The author is clearly very familiar with the theory and practice of numerical computations in OO languages. For me, the main contributions of the book are an expert formulation of some of the basic numerical techniques and concepts in OO terms (a subject rarely approached in the numerous existing books on OO technology), and examples that can be followed to implement other NM techniques and concepts.
The inclusion of very readable Smalltalk and Java source code is very useful.
For use in a course, I would like to see the material complemented by exercises.
Reconciling Numerical Methods and Object-Orientation.......2000-12-24
I really enjoyed this book because it shows that a high level language such as Smalltalk can efficiently model a complex domain like numerical methods. Besset presents a conceptual framework where the concepts are extended and reused, showing the power of OO programming. I also liked the structure of examples followed by a formal foundation, implementation, and implementation discussion.

Oh man, is this book neat!.......2000-12-08
Dr. Besset has written an uncommonly great book where he has given us important tools while teaching object-oriented analysis and design. Having both Smalltalk and Java code included is a gift. As a smalltalker, I greatly appreciate the inclusion of the Smalltalk code. The book is well organized, very readable and provides the basis for individuals to extend the classes provides as well as build applications with the included code. The code also provides solid examples of object-oriented programming style that will aid the newer programmers in developing effective use of both Java and Smalltalk.
Book Description
Designed for the many applied mathematicians and engineers who wish to explore computerized numerical methods, this text communicates an enthusiasm for the power of C++, an object-oriented language, as a tool for this kind of work. This revision of the successful first edition includes for the first time information on programming in Windows-based environments. In addition this revision includes new topics and methods throughout the text that clarify and enhance the treatment of the subject. From reviews of the first edition: 'If you are interested in numerical methods or are looking for a course text this book is worth your attention.'' Journal of the Association of C and C++ Users
Customer Reviews:
so so.......2003-07-23
It is jus so so, like most books by either oxford or cambridge, a bit too concise and lack of explanation. Use complicated code to achieve simple goals. If you are a novice, want to computing in C++, don't buy this one.
Good application of OOP to numerical methods.......1998-11-07
I used this book to teach myself the subject matter. It is well written and uses the powerful advantages of object oriented programing. My only real criticism is the lack of a source diskette.

Book Description
An Introduction to C++ and Numerical Methods provides a brief yet comprehensive introduction to programming and numerical methods for students in engineering, chemistry, physics, and applied mathematics. It is suitable for second semester or second year students who have had at least a semester of calculus. This text offers students both an introduction to programming in C++ and clear explanations of the basics of numerical methods, including numerical integration and the solution of ordinary differential equations, nonlinear equations, and systems of linear equations. It is unique among textbooks at this level in its extensive coverage of numerical methods used in scientific and engineering computation. An Introduction to C++ and Numerical Methods is designed to help students move quickly into writing interesting and sophisticated programs. The text begins with an introduction to scientific computing and the basic constructs of C++, including variables and assignment, typing, if statements, for and while loops, functions, one-dimensional arrays, and the cout and cin objects. After students have gained some experience with programming using these constructs, the topics are later revisited in greater detail, leading up to the important topic of classes and object-oriented programming. Throughout the text Ortega and Grimshaw emphasize the basic paradigms for constructing good programs and detecting errors.
Customer Reviews:
not for any serious enineers.......2003-07-18
A waste of money! If you want to learn Numerical methods or need some C++ numerical code, don't buy this book. There are much better choice like "programming in C with numerical methods for engineers" by Kamal B. Rojiani or "an introduction to numerical methods in C++" by BH Flowers.
For Fortran programmers who want to learn C++.......1999-09-01
This book was written for scientific programmers who program mainly in Fortran but who want to move into C++. It is a brief and elementary discussion of C++. The main features of C++ that make it different than C are not discussed until Chapter 17, and then only briefly. No discussion is given in the book on performance issues in C++ vs Fortran. Serious scientific programmers in Fortran have to face up to these issues and be convinced that C++ is the way to go if they are to make the switch. The book might be useful to those who want a quick look at C++.

An Introduction to C++ and Numerical Methods is designed specifically for students in disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and engineering who are required to take some computational component. In addition to being an introduction to C++, this text also provides clear explanations of the basics of numerical methods. After a brief introduction to scientific computing, the basic constructs of C++ are introduced in their simplest forms, allowing students to write fairly sophisticated and interesting programs. Subsequent chapters revisit these basic constructs to treat them in more detail. The text is unique for its coverage of numerical methods used in scientific and engineering computation. In addititon there is a general discussion of some of the basic paradigms for writing good programs and detecting errors. The result is a brief yet comprehensive treatment of the subject.
