Book Description
Whoever said Everything old is new again could have been talking about French Pompadour Style. The flamboyant, opulent, refined aestheticso characteristic of the eighteenth centuryhas enjoyed a spectacular revival in recent years. In The New Eighteenth-Century Style, journalist Michèle Lalande and photographer Gilles Trillard, both experts in the field of interior décor, survey 30 examples of this quintessential blending of exquisite detail and ostentatious affluence. From lush velvet upholstery to the emblematic use of turquoise with gold accents, these perfectly captured interiors beguile the reader with well-worn extravagance. In an era of shabby chic the more refined, more pristine accents of Pompadour may be just what the world of interior décor needsand this beautiful book provides an indispensable guide.
Customer Reviews:
Love that shabby chic French style!.......2007-06-01
An absolutely smashing book, full of details. After all, it is the details that make the room finishesd and unique. This is a classic look in my way of thinking, but then again, it is my style! A decorator by trade, I am always open to new concepts, and I found the book to offer many different perspectives on the same style, pages after pages of them. Excellent book layout and design, and wonderful photography.
Lovely book.......2007-04-04
I'm an artist & antique collector and not an interior designer by trade, so I am totally enjoying this book. I find it to be a lovely book full of great photography and many interesting details to spark one's imagination. Regardless of the fact that all the styles are not necessarily my own taste, the book as a whole is great fun to look at and I found it inspiring. Each time I looked at a room, I found some new little detail that I'd missed the first time around. It made me itch to re-vamp a room, stat, and I consider anything that inspires me or makes me feel creative money well spent.
Dangerous Liasons.......2007-02-09
This is a pretty, pretty book with lots of great stuff to look it, lots of interesting vignettes. It's French shabby, chippy _hit, uh, I mean chic. This was a great trend in the mid 1990's here in the USA before Rachel A. made shabby and chic a brand. Big style on a budget using detrius no one wanted. And it was cheap back then. Just took a can of white paint to chic up everything.
These French 18th century and 18th century inspired objets in this book, are not cheap. They are shabby and they are beautiful. The vignettes look like the Broadway stage set for the play Dangerous Liasons - decay, messy, artful, romantic, monochromatic and mad.
Like many decor books, the vignettes are impossible to see as life like - like does anyone really live in these vignettes. Still, they are beautiful to look at. The new 18th century style is a little like the new emperor's clothes. Smoke and mirrors to the highest degree of accomplishment. Get this book for the fun of it.
Fabulous Book! .......2006-11-18
If you're style is that of a Paris flea market, the bazaar in Bombay or a eclectic old shop somewhere in Eastern Europe, you'll love this book. Great photography; the individualism of each space comes through with color and texture. My new favorite. The highlight is more photos of the Stockholm attic apartment, which is a true style icon.
French Flea Market (if you like that look).......2006-11-02
More like Madame Pompadour is probably rolling over in her grave. I hope to goodness gracious that this isn't the new 18th century style. If you like 18th century style on a seriously tight budget then you may enjoy this book. It's full of pages of colorless 'schemes', seriously abused furniture and icy cold lighting. Was it all photographed in rooms with Northern exposure? The editors of Veranda will love this book. I am an interior designer who collects period 18th century furniture and art. I have truly studied 18th century furniture, decorative arts and customs for years and this is a popular look although I find it horribly depressing. On the positive side - the photography in this book is very well done. If you like French flea market 'junk' then you'll love this. I gave it a 4 vs. a 2 because the quality of the book is excellent and the photography is excellent but much of my disdain for this book is from this horrendous & prevalent style that I wish would go away.

The French Interior in the Eighteenth Century.......2002-02-03
This is an excellent resource book for Artists to research the decorative arts.It has influenced my art techniques tremendously . Fabulous color plates with good detail .Highly recommend this book.
An overview not an in-depth view of wealthy french interiors.......2002-01-04
This book is somewhat misleading in it's title. In many ways "nick knaks of the french interior" might be more accurate. This book has some discussion of French aestetics, and some overall views of interiors, but concentrates on individual items such as furniture, porcelain, clientele and furnishing textiles.
The book has some lovely photographs, but if you are looking for a book full of wonderful photographs of 18th century French aristocratic interiors, then this book is probably not for you. Most of the photos are of the smaller items like nick knaks that make the "feeling" of French interior design.
For an overview of the great interior artists of the bits and pieces that make up french interior design this is good, but it's certinally not a comprehensive guide and in many ways is a dissapointing book.

Princeton Architectural Press's The Little House is the first English edition of La petite maison to be published since the original French edition was released in 1879.

Book Description
A unique guide that will teach complete beginners how to paint a beautiful floral watercolour in just one weekend.
Beginners recognise that they need to acquire basic painting skills - but at the same time they are eager to produce their first finished painting. This popular 'weekend' formula allows them to do both in a limited amount of time - to build skills gradually and to produce an attractive, frameable painting that they can hang on their walls by the end of the weekend.
The author starts by introducing the materials required, and then leads readers through a series of watercolour technique exercises designed to provide a basic grounding in the skills needed for this subject area.
This instruction is followed by six weekend projects for painting a range of popular floral subjects: a single flower; a group of white flowers; an indoors still life; an outdoors close-up; autumn flowers; and wild flowers in the landscape. Each course starts with practice exercises to be completed on the Saturday; readers are then ready to complete the full watercolour painting on the Sunday.
Clear instructions accompany step-by-step photographs throughout, and technical information is given in special feature boxes.

Thanks, Jill!.......2004-04-11
After months of sitting with my preschooler at the easel and painting nothing but crude daisies, I bought this book. It's been three days and I am already painting flowers that look like flowers. The techniques are simple and are explained well with text and photographs. I find that many how-to-paint books are filled with the artist's own finished works but never show the intimidated beginner how to get there. This book is different in that it takes the reader through a step-by-step process that begins with the first stroke and ends with the final product. I highly recommend this book to the beginning watercolorist.
Book Description
Readers who have never even picked up a paint brush will be amazed at what they can accomplish with the help of this one-of-a-kind instruction manual. Watercolours in a Weekend can teach anyone the essential skills needed to paint a complete watercolor picture in a single weekend.
Structured around six short courses for painting popular subjects, these projects provide a complete beginner's art course. Each one begins with practice exercises, covering a wide range of watercolor techniques. Readers are then ready to complete a full watercolor painting in a day. The step-by-step demonstrations for the paintings use only the techniques learned from the exercises, and a palette of mixed paint and a color swatch accompany each step.
Hazel Harrison is an accomplished art-instruction writer with many books to her credit.
Customer Reviews:
A Fun Way to Make Fast Progress--Great Book!!.......2007-09-12
I needed more experience with landscapes in watercolor, so I bought this book. The paintings that you learn to do in it are beautiful and exciting, but not too difficult. Step-by-step instructions are given beginning with the pencil sketch you will need on your watercolor paper and then proceeding to the first wash. Each lesson teaches something new.
The book begins with the usual material needed section, and then proceed to teach the basic painting techniques step-by-step by having you do a simple painting of ex: a simplified tree using wet-wet and then adding the trunk using another technique. Wet on dry is then taught in a 3-step exercise of a cloudy sky, lake and hills (nothing detailed---the book teaches everything in small exercises (paintings).
Next, 2 exercises in the use of masking medium and lifting medium.
Next, there are 2 pages on each subject of composition, choosing warm vs cool colors, perspectives. A few color mixes are suggested that can be safely used for landscape subjects.
The rest (majority) of the book is then dedicated to step-by-step painting projects-- the first several paintings teach you the basics of painting different types of clouds and skies. Next---Water--sunlight on water, reflections in water, moving water, waterfall, rough sea, moody sea. Each of these lessons are taught by following step-by-step directions to make a small painting
Next, mountains and lakes, then, trees and foliage--winter tree, foliage, tree shapes, trees in a setting, autumn trees. Next, a 6-page class on painting a scene of a road surrounded by trees with sunlight beaming through the trees--- as you progress in the book, the paintings you do become more detailed, building the beginner painter's confidence in a stepped method.
Next, Buildings and textures--linear perspective, light and shade--again, a step-by-step painting to do--simple but beautiful. Next, simple brickwork, with a step-by-step instruction to achieve an interesting end- product of a stuccoed wall with bricks showing through a hole and cracks on the stucco.
Next, windows and roofs, then a 6-page class on painting a farm scene-- the sketch to have on your paper is shown, making everything easy and fun.
Next, reflection--puddles on a farm track, buildings reflected in a flooded field, reflected boats, and a denver mill.
Several more beautiful paintings are taught in a stepped method, including winter landscape with a snow-covered tree, shadows on snow, low tide coastal scene, etc..
This is an outstanding book for beginner watercolorists. I was impressed by the simplicity of the paintings that you do, but at the same time, something you can be proud of and build on for the more complicated paintings.

Customer Reviews:
Very good book for complete beginners!.......2002-06-11
I am a complete beginner at watercolors and this is the book for me. Each lesson is broken into Saturday's painting exercises, which focus on different watercolor techniques, and Sunday's painting. The exercises are just what I was looking for, I need that step by step guidance. This book is helping me get past that feeling of not knowing where to start with watercolors, and so far I am enjoying it so much.
Excellent Introduction.......2001-01-11
Having read a number of books and experimented on my own with watercolors (no formal instruction), I was disappointed in the results of my efforts. Then I picked up this book, followed the first lesson and was stunned at the quality of the result. This book goes step by step through techniques and each painting is very easy to follow. The results are a real ego booster. My only caveat is that you come to realize how important composition and color selection are to a painting's success, and this is the one area that the book is somewhat weak in.
