A superbly illustrated volume that draws on the most comprehensive collection of Wiener Werkstätte designs in existence.

The textile department of the Wiener Werkstätte was established seven years after the inauguration of this famous and highly influential Viennese association of artists and craftsmen. The demand for fabric designs for use by the fashion department and in interior decoration was met by original designs from some 100 artists, including the association's cofounder Josef Hoffmann and other leading figures such as Dagobert Peche, Carl Otto Czeschka, and Maria Likarz. Their creativity gave rise to one of the most remarkable legacies of modern textile design.

This book draws on the original gouache drawings, pattern books, and samples now in the collection of the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna—a truly remarkable archive of the over 1,800 recorded fabric designs. These range from the early rounded naturalistic motifs of art nouveau to later angular geometric designs associated with art deco. A wealth of reproductions, many in color, are supplemented by a catalogue of designs and photographs of fabrics in use in fashion, interior decoration, exhibitions, and the Wiener Werkstätte's own showrooms.

Pleasing to the eye and educational to the mind!.......2000-11-26

I spent a week in Vienna this summer. Being that I did the whole backpacking thing- bringing back books was not an option. Last week I was in an art museum and came across this incredible book.

What initially attracted me to Vienna- was not its art, nor its architecture, it was its place in the history of music, and what a place that was. However, Vienna, along with Berlin and Prague, opened my eyes to the timeless beauty of both art and architecture of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Vienna is a true gem of this world, and this book illustrates that perfectly. This is truly a wonderful find.

Vienna: Art and Architecture is packed to the hilt with beautiful photos. As well, it is packed to the hilt with informational text, which is equally important. This book is informative and educational, but in written text and photos.

The book focuses on the beautiful buildings that fill the streets of Vienna, as well as the public places, and the art housed within these buildings and on Vienna's streets. It covers from the Renaissance to the present.

This book really takes you on a trip through Vienna's history, going beyond art and architecture. It's an amazing history from the height of Hapsburg power through its demise and beyond.

Furthermore, there are tons of photographs within this book that the public otherwise doesn't get to see, such as the great collection in the gallery of the Belvedere Palace- which wasn't open to the public when I was there - to the wonderful art attached to the walls of Schonbrunn Palace. Much of which is not open to the public.

If you're looking for historical books on Vienna, you can find better. However, if you are looking for pictorial books on Vienna- you aren't likely to find much on this level. It is beautifully done.

A well mix of beauty and information.

Vienna Art and Architecture ed. by Rolf Toman is a beautiful coffee table book but it is much more than that thanks to the excellent articles accompanying the illustrations. All the articles haved been translated from the German. The seven chapters deal, in some detail, with art and architecture from antiquity to the present.

If you answered the New York Jets to both, you've suffered enough. You're probably too deep into therapy to appreciate how deep into futility veteran New York Times writer and longtime Jets chronicler Eskenazi can descend in this irreverent history.

The Jets saga is certainly a surreal one. "The Jets I came to write about," Eskenazi observes, "were like life as Kafka or George Carlin might have pictured it--only more so. They led an existence based in the everyday reality so many of us faced, one of small victories offset by large losses." Dubbing them the most famous bad franchise in sports, he makes a fumblerooski of a case. Other than the 1969 Super Bowl miracle engineered by Joe Namath, the Jets have been constantly sacked for losses. THIS IS THE STORY OF THE NEW YORK JETS, HOW FAILURE AFTER FAILURE HAS FILLED THEIR HISTORY. THIS STORY DESCRIBES IN GREAT DETAIL THE FEW SUCESSFUL SEASONS AND THE MANY DISAPPOINTING AND TOTALLY PAIN FILLED ONES. THE AUTHOR DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING AND INTERVIEWING THE PEOPLE WHO WERE DURING THESE DISASTEROUS TIMES. FROM WEEB AND JOE TO THE COMING OF THE TUNA, THIS BOOK HELD MY INTEREST AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL FOOTBALL FANS, I FEEL THE JETS PAIN.

A Must For Any Jets Fan.......2002-01-07

This is a well-written history of the New York Jets. It covers the one great accomplishment (Super Bowl III) and the many failures and disappointments. As a fan you love the team and always get your hopes even though you know they will dash them in the end. This book covers those emotions well.

Being a Jet fan can be painful, but fun !.......2001-05-14

Gerry gave a very honest account of the New York Jets.

You'll enjoy the stories of the early years. Recounting the selling of season tickets from the apartment of one of the original owners, Walt Michaels finding a "good practice field" while flying home from a game (it was located on the grounds of a NYC prison), the press' examination of Joe Namath's knee in the restroom of a local restaurant and many others.

Those who were at that dreadful Miami comeback at the Meadowlands in 1994 will relive that sick feeling in the pit of their stomachs.

Parcells has come and gone and we still don't have another appearance in the Super Bowl. This book might expain why.

But we return each season with high hopes of reaching the big game. Reading Mr. Eskenazi's book will remind all of us of the pain we go through to have some fun on a sunny Sunday afternoon in the Meadowlands (NJ).

Now more than ever.......1999-10-19

Along came Bill Parcells and New York thought its troubles were over. Last year we were a half hour from the Superbowl and now we're in the cellar again. If you find yourself scratching your head and asking why. This book has the answers--the history of the Gang Green struggle and where we went wrong.

eight ball chicks, was a great book. it tells you how it really is out there. in the places where there is no other choice, where you don't have time to be a kid, and where there's nothing but bad around you. gini sikes does what she set out to do. to study, learn, and let the world know about these girls and what they're all about in these gangs. although there was much more that could have been said, and many more gangs to see it was nicely written no doubt. these were just a few of the girls, but there are many more, with different stories, all leading them down the same path. it's showing you, where these women come from, why they do what they do. in most cases there's no other way. if they could all have that nice house, with both parents, and a nice safe community, i'm sure they would take it, but when all you have is a barrio full of drugs, and guns, with nobody who gives a damn, there really isn't much hope. you got to be strong, emotionally to survive these places. no doubt there's some who do it for the thrill and what not, but they all end up the same. another banger behind bars or shot down somewhere. all my respect to this book and to those people who really have no choice. there's a whole lot more trouble out there that some turn a blind eye to and wish not to see, but this book is an "in your face" kind of book and i love it for that.

Save your money.......2007-03-13

There is nothing insightful in this book.Gini Sikes basically tells the stories of a few women who made bad choices and then blamed everyone but themselves for the outcomes of those choices.The book bogs down only a quarter of the way through it and never recovers.It is monotonous and tough to get to the end.I would probably rather listen to a scratched Wham CD or eat a huge bowl of brussel sprouts than have to read this again.Save your money.

I agree with Amazon's review of 8 Ball Chicks. I don't think Gini Sikes had anything particularly insightful to say, but I give it the max rating because these women's stories are CRAZY (i.e. really entertaining to read, especially for people who love to read about how messed up the world is). Whoever you are, this book is worth reading.

Girl gangbangers.......2005-08-01

When I first heard of the book I heard it on TV and said to myself that the title meant the name of a girl gang and the whole book would be about that gang. I was wrong and do wonder why it has this title if it has nothing to do with "8ball Chicks".

Gini is very insightful on the research she made on these different race gang ladies and their gang life. I like the book but think she needed to include more on the gang culture of women out here and there.

All these writers write about gangs in California, Texas, Illinois. Yet, there are few compared to these states but there are more of us gangbangers out here in the other states. Such as the east coast; Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland. Some writers are careful in not stereotyping their novels but I personally dont judge them because most of them time it is about stereotypical stories.

I wish I can write my own books and let people know what more there is out there. The behind the scenes of behind the scenes of what people already know. The ganglife of us women, culture, pride, heritage, family, and mi vida loka.

Good book anyways.

Through the eyes of female gangs!.......2003-11-07

Originally I was reading the book because in a play at my University, (the play was on female gangs), and needed to do a little research, but when I picked up the book and began to read, I found many more reasons not to put it down. What captured me the most about the book was the way Gini Sikes was able to give the most vivid image of gang life through that book, I have ever read. I felt like I was on those L.A. streets and in those San Antonio neighborhoods.

I believe Gini Sikes not only captured the violent side of gang life but the human side. I was able to see these people, she wrote about, as more than "gang bangers", these people had lives and were living like any other person. Overall, this book is like a documentary written down. "Cocoa" and "Alicia" were having some normal troubles in their life and in some way or another, I could relate to that. It was things like man trouble, parent trouble, and school trouble, any usual young adult will go through those things (maybe not to the extreme. In my imagination, I visualized every part of the book as if it were a film.

Last, I believe Gini Sikes was very brave for going into each neighborhood personally and seeing for herself "the life". I think this made the book a lot better and it put more feeling into the book. I don't think she would have been able to write a very affective book if she had not actually stepped into the world of gangs for a minute. In conclusion, Gini Sikes did her job in dissecting the life of female gangs through a book!
