Book Description
The chemistry of phenols tends to be ignored in organic chemical textbooks and to be lost amongst the many classes of functional derivatives. This volume is not intended to provide a textbook approach but rather to give an account of developments in phenol chemistry in the last two decades.
Features of this book:
• Numerous phenolic systems have been covered in detail, e.g. phenolic propanoids.
• The emphasis throughout has been on synthesis, on what can be achieved by the use of phenolic intermediates and in the construction of phenolic end products.
• Many chapters enable the reader to refer to the original literature wherever possible.
• Various chapters provide a fund of tutorial material and problems for undergraduate studies and further, which will encourage perusal of the literature. Some 2000 references to applied and academic papers are given.
Phenols are ubiquitous substances and now it is more widely accepted that there are pros and cons connected with their usage. The pros for compounds are well-known and are illustrated by perennial panaceas such as aspirin, paracetamol, codeine, etc. The cons are less obvious because they are also materials deeply entrenched in our standard of living and in most cases inherent hazards have only recently come to light. The book will be of interest to postgraduate students in academic and industrial work.

Book Description
This reference describes standard and nonstandard coordination modes of ligands in complexes, the intricacies of polyhedron-programmed and regioselective synthesis, and the controlled creation of coordination compounds such as molecular and hn-p-complexes, chelates, and homo- and hetero-nuclear compounds. It offers a clear and concise review of modern synthetic techniques of metal complexes as well as lesser known gas- and solid-phase synthesis, electrosynthesis, and microwave and ultrasonic treatment of the reaction system. The authors pay special attention to o-hydroxyazomethines and their S-, Se-containing analogues, b-diketones, and quinines, among others, and examine the immediate interaction of ligands and metal salts or carbonyls.

Book Description
This book represents first non-edited book on the subject of metal catalysed reactions in ionic liquids and covers the literature from its origins until early 2005. Following a general introduction to the field of biphasic/mutliphasic catalysis, the synthesis, functionalisation and fundamental properties of ionic liquids relevant to catalysis are described. In the ensuing chapters catalysed reactions are discussed according to their type, encompassing hydrogenation, hydroformylation, oxidation, C-C coupling reactions, metathesis, dimerisation, polymerisation and more. Trends, generalisations, advantages and disadvantages of ionic liquids for specific reaction types are discussed. Specific processes such as supported ionic liquid phase catalysis, continuous processes using CO
2 extraction and nanoparticle catalysis are covered. The book should be of interest to all those working in catalysis/green chemistry, in particular, to advanced level undergraduate and graduate students and all those researching or contemplating research in bi- or multiphasic catalysis using ionic liquids.

Book Description
Indoles continue to be of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry and at the current time several thousand specific new derivatives are reported annually. Research has been driven by the wide range of indole derivatives which occur in nature and through the biological activity of many indole derivatives, of both natural and synthetic origin. This book provides a systematic guide to the most useful and important reactions in the field for both synthesis and synthetic modification of the indole ring. While including the most recently developed and promising methods, it also updates informationavailable on classical methods to give the reader an up-to-date and comprehensive view of the subject. The methods are illustrated by procedures drawn from the literature and by tables including examples chosen to indicate both the scope of applicabilityand variations in methodology. The organization of the book is based on the retrosynthetic concept of identifying the bond(s) formed in the reaction, which in turn identifies potential starting materials.
Key Features
* Includes systematic summaries of the most important methods for the construction of indoles from aromatic precursors
* Discusses methods for preparing indoles by annelation of pyrroles
* Covers methods for adding or modifying substituent groups, including methods for introducing the tryptamine and tryptophan side-chainsExamines reduction/oxidation reactions that are specific for indoles
* Considers use of cycloaddition reactions for synthetic elaboration of indoles
Book Description
The origin of life from inanimate matter has been the focus of much research for decades, both experimentally and philosophically. Luisi takes the reader through the consecutive stages from prebiotic chemistry to synthetic biology, uniquely combining both approaches. This book presents a systematic course discussing the successive stages of self-organisation, emergence, self-replication, autopoiesis, synthetic compartments and construction of cellular models, in order to demonstrate the spontaneous increase in complexity from inanimate matter to the first cellular life forms. A chapter is dedicated to each of these steps, using a number of synthetic and biological examples. With end of chapter review questions to aid reader comprehension, this book will appeal to graduate students and academics researching the origin of life and related areas such as evolutionary biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics and natural sciences.
Customer Reviews:
Great book by a true scholar!.......2007-06-12
Pier Luigi Luisi is well known for his scholarly work in astrobiology, the field that studies origins of life on Earth and possibly Mars and other extraterrestrial objects. Prof. Luisi's work has always been on the forefront of the field, full of creativity, and elegantly presented. Prof. Luisi is always fair in giving credit to others. His papers are written in a balanced way. He never overstates his case.
So, Prof. Luisi is a great scientist. But this does not guarantee a good book, or even less a good textbook. I was very curious how he has performed in those areas.
Prof. Luisi performed brilliantly. I have found that his coverage of the material is superb, presented in a balanced scholarly way, and yet presented in an engaging manner, written beautifully. The boxes with summaries are helpful, as are the questions for the readers at the end of each chapter. The reference section is excellent. All the references have titles, which is helpful for deciding on the potential follow up.
It is clear that Prof. Luisi wrote this book to teach the readers, and in the process he made a superb reading. The readers should have a general scientific background to benefit the most from this book. If you are a college teacher, you may wish to use this book as a textbook in teaching an astrobiology course or a module.
Why should you read this book? In my opinion it is important for the readers to learn about the origins of life on Earth and possibly on Mars, since we are now in the middle of the most exciting missions by NASA and other space agencies that are dedicated to these topics

Book Description
MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry is one of the latest and most fascinating new developments in the analysis of organic compounds. Originally developed for the analysis of biomolecules, it has developed into one of the most powerful techniques for the characterization of synthetic polymers. This book describes the fundamentals of the MALDI process and the technical features of MALDI-TOF instrumentation. It reviews the application of MALDI-TOF for identification, chemical and molar mass analysis of synthetic polymers. With many examples, this monograph examines in detail experimental protocols for the determination of endgroups, the analysis of copolymers and additives, and the coupling of liquid chromatography and MALDI-TOF.

Book Description
Lussier differs from the leading competition by adopting an applications/skill building approach, a growth area in the Human Relations market. This approach suits professors who want to incorporate more activities and exercises into the classroom. Lussier's market share (over the past few editions) has grown because more schools have adopted the activities-based style. Instructor's want students to apply concepts and develop skills that can be used in their daily and professional lives.

Book Description
Lussier’s Human Relations in Organizations: Applications and Skill Building, 5e, takes on an application/skill building approach. This approach suits professors, who want to incorporate more activities and exercises into the classroom, and students who want to be able to do more than just understand concepts, but actually apply and develop skills that they can use in their daily and professional life. The book continues to have integration balanced by a three-pronged approach: -clear concise understanding of human relations/ organizational behavior concepts; -the application of HR/OB concepts for critical thinking in the business world; and -the development of HR/OB skills. This approach allows the student to learn the concept, apply it through various applications and situational activities, and ultimately apply it to his/her own life.
