A perfect book for a level III or less engineer.......2003-10-25
It shows me a "easy-understanding and practical" way on how to design reinforced concrete structures, especially useful when your discipline leader is absent.
A Great Resource for Both Students & Practicing Engineers.......2002-11-21
The new 5th edition of the Reinforced Concrete textbook is one of the best out there. It is a great resource for both learning the subject matter for undergraduate and graduate students and for referencing as a practicing engineer. The topics are organized in a logical manner that builds the reader up into really understanding the material, both design and theory. There are many useful examples provided throughout the textbook with detailed computations and explanations of the steps taken. Flowcharts are also presented for every design aspect to supplement, not replace, the reading and provide a concise summary of the design procedure.
I have used this textbook (and previous editions) to learn the subject of reinforced concrete both for my undergraduate and graduate studies and I still use it as reference for my research work. I also used Nawy's Prestressed Concrete 4th edition textbook for my studies. The way I see it is that if you want to be the best, you learn from the best. Just check out Nawy's accomplishments for yourself!!

Books like this are the reason that engineers are considered illiterate. Almost every page has a grammatical mistake. Most of the examples have technical mistakes.
It is a poor reflection on the American University system that someone who cannot even communicate at an eighth grade level is a PROFESSOR ! Similarly, it is a poor reflection on the publishing industry that books like this actually get PUBLISHED!
From the reviewer comments there seems to be a strong fan club in Israel. Perhaps that is where Professor Nawy should be teaching.

The joy of Civil Engineering.......2001-05-29
Reinforced concrete is the corner stone of our civil engineering profession, making it interesting is where the hardship lies. Dr. Nawy, along with his book made it seem like a breeze. He made the course both enjoyable and interesting and enhanced my confidence in going out to the real world to face my job. I learnt alot about my profession from him and even mentioning his name as one of my professors has given me a whole lot! I am grateful i was one of his students. Thank you Dr. Nawy and Good Luck to you! P.S. The quality of a book should not be rated according to typing errors, it is a weak and cheap attempt of bad publicity. I am sure Dr. Nawy does not have control over what the editor decides should be printed or not. But its natural, if they aren't up there, then they try to bring down everyone else who is, grudges and jealousy make people go a long terrible way.

This work is concerned with the dependability characteristics of reliability models which have a partitioned state space. In applications these partitions will correspond to various degrees of system performance. Both discrete and continuous time systems are considered as well as Markov and semi-Markov systems. With these models one may develop many dependability characteristics including: the number of working periods during an interval, the number of repair periods until system breakdown, and the total time spent in the set of working states. The author shows how the theory may be applied using numerous examples and with three computing packages: MATLAB, MAPLE, and the NAG Fortran 77 subroutine library. As a result, researchers and practioners concerned with analyzing and modelling the performance of systems, and engineers working on systems dependability will find much of interest here.

The theory of stochastic processes, for science and engineering, can be considered as an extension of probability theory allowing modeling of the evolution of systems over time. The modern theory of Markov processes has its origins in the studies of A.A. Markov (1856-1922) on sequences of experiments "connected in a chain" and in the attempts to describe mathematically the physical phenomenon Brownian motion. The theory of stochastic processes entered in a period of intensive development when the idea of Markov property was brought in. This book is a modern overall view of semi-Markov processes and its applications in reliability. The text contains many examples which aid in the understanding of the theoretical notions and shows how to apply them to concrete physical situations including algorithmic simulations. Everything is Clear to the Authors, if not to their Readers.......2005-10-28
The authors state in the preface to their book that their goal is to provide "a thorough approach to semi-Markov processes and their applications in reliability". This is an ambitious objective for a 222 page text, since a large body of research on Semi-Markov processes has developed over the course of the last forty years or so.
In the opinion of this reviewer, Limnios & Oprisan never even come close to their grand objective. Their book is simply too short, too terse and too condensed to give a thorough treatment. The authors realized early on that they would need to reference the vast body of literature. It is strange to this reviewer that their treatment, copyright 2001, chooses as its main references out-of-print French texts by Neveu (1964) and Janssen (1969). The authors' choice of difficult-to-find auxiliary references makes their treatment that much less accessible.
The prerequisite list here is extensive. The authors claim that all that is required is an understanding of Markov Chains, like you might find in Stroock's "Introduction to Markov Processes" or Norris' "Markov Chains". Furthermore, the authors claim to cover the following list of topics in the first 29 pages of their book (which comprises Chapter 1): measure theory, Laplace transforms and continuous-time Markov processes. In reality, Limnios & Oprisan introduce (barely) these and other topics including: stopping times, the Optional Stopping Theorem, stationary stochastic processes, martingale theory, Ergodic theory, strong Markov Processes and renewal processes.
In order to get through the first chapter of Limnios & Oprisan, you'll need an excellent background in these topics. I recommend Rogers & Williams 800 page, two-volume set "Diffusions, Markov Processes and Martingales", 2nd edition.
Chapter 2 runs a mere 18 pages and purports to cover "Markov Renewal Processes". I stopped counting how many times the authors give references to out-of-print books in this chapter. I also lost count of the number of times the authors use the phrases "it is straightforward", "it is easy to show", or "it is well-known", in the context of mathematical problems having none of the above properties.
This book is useful to the reader in one sense: it whets the appetite for an understanding of Semi-Markov Processes and Reliability Theory and puts this reviewer in the market for a well-written book on the topic.

Entry-time processes are finite-state continuous-time jump processes with transition rates depending only on the two states involved, the calendar time, and the most recent arrival time (entry time). Entry-time processes are transformed into Markov processes via the standard technique of incorporating entry time into the state variables. It is shown that the associated state-transition (Chapman-Kolmogorov) equations can be written as a coupled pair of integrodifferential equations. A finite-difference approximation to these equations is developed. This computational approach is verified, and some of its properties delineated, via two hypothetical examples. One of these examples admits a semi-analytic solution, while simulations provide the base of comparison for the other.

The semi-Markov decision model is a powerful tool in analyzing sequential decision processes with random decision epochs. In this paper, we have built the semi-Markov decision process (SMDP) for the maintenance policy optimization of condition-based preventive maintenance problems, and have presented the approach for joint optimization of inspection rate and maintenance policy. Through numerical examples, the improvement of this method is compared with the scheme, which optimizes only over the inspection rate. We also find that under a special case when the deterioration rate at each failure stage is the same, the optimal policy obtained by SMDP algorithm is a dynamic threshold-type scheme with threshold value depending on the inspection rate.
