Book Description

Yes you can! Give the gift of art. Give the gift of creativity. Give the gift of fun. Because now we can all paint with the best of them. Drawn from the annals of America's fondly remembered pastimes, Real Art! is an all-new, cleverly designed paint by number kit and the coolest gift of the season.

Open the box and discover everything an artist needs to create a gallery of paintings suitable for framing--ten white "canvas" boards, 18 oversized pots of acrylic paint, and two brushes, one narrow and one medium. The images, newly created by artist Nancy Stahl, are iconic: a still life of luscious pears. A clipper ship in full sail. Tropical parrots in a study of exuberant hue. The geisha. The bustling street scene. And two bona fide masterpieces: van Gogh's Sunflowers and, yes, the Mona Lisa. Plus, pulling the full experience together is a 64-page full-color book of history, appreciation, and instruction. Illustrated throughout, it traces the canon of PBN subjects and artists, including the original brouhaha over its place in the culture; and provides a how-to-paint primer--including how to improvise, from choosing a varied color palette to leaving parts of the canvas blank, à la Warhol; plus tips on displaying your work and, ultimately, becoming a PBN collector.

3 out of 5 stars A bit dissapointed.......2007-08-18

I was so excited and still am about the idea of this product. However, at least 3 of the colors were so dried up that I could not even use them...which of course makes it difficult for a paint-by-number!

5 out of 5 stars So much fun!!.......2007-07-04

This kit is fantastic!!! It is really a lot of fun & the paintings cover nearly every taste in paint-by-number artwork you can think of (except for kitties!). The kit itself is really neat. One side contains the canvases, 10 in all. The canvases themselves are a Japanese scene, a French scene with a poodle, two puppies in a basket, a Southwest scene with pottery, a snowy cabin, the Mona Lisa, Sunflowers, a large ship at sea, a still-life of fruit & two parrots. The other side contains the paints, 2 brushes & a neat little book on the history of the art form.

Some things to consider & are usually true with any kit.

1. The paints are REALLY thick! This is good in the sense that you can water them down a lot, but they do require prep work before you can use each paint pot. Water, stirring, more water, etc. Use some toothpicks & stir well!

2. The brushes are WAY too thick! I have some of my own brushes from other kits & you really need a very small one for the tiny pieces.

3. Always fill in the spots with the arrows before the bigger places! Otherwise, how else will you know what to do?

4. The blended colors don't always come out exactly, but that's what makes each piece unique. Try mixing with one drop at a time. I ended up making too much of a few color combos & went through the other canvases to see if I could use that color elsewhere. The colors also didn't match to the pictures in the book, sometimes they were way off! The pictures in the book were too small also, but they gave you a general idea.

5. Several colors, especially the dark ones, needed a couple of coats. You will tell this when you put on the first coat.

I started with the Japanese scene & will be moving to the other pieces soon!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! .......2007-01-12

Very pleased with price and quality. Everything you need to paint and wonderful pictures included.

5 out of 5 stars Paint the masters easily.......2006-02-25

Paint the Mona Lisa! This is a great paint by number set, but not your typical paint by number. Have your kids painting great works of Art.

5 out of 5 stars The best paint system I've ever used.......2005-09-03

Just bought a copy of Douglas Brenner's Real Art ! In a word, stupdendous. I labored over the Mona Lisa for several weeks. This is almost as good as the original. Authentic colors, vivid hues, all at a reasonable cost. If you're looking to buy a gift early for the kids for Christmas, this is the perfect choice for "hues". Enjoy and don't listen to those other reviews. They're way off the mark - Jeanne

These artistic logic puzzles took Japan by storm when first introduced by Nishio. And when Games Magazine offered them to international audiences, the response was overwhelming. Now the folks at Games present the U.S. edition of this collection by Japan's top Paint by Numbers pioneers. All 123 ingenious puzzles, from the simple to the complex are included, along with Nishio's solving tips, introductions to the constructors, and your invitation to create your own puzzles for future editions. Warning! These puzzles are madly habit-forming. But they're wonderfully satisfying for those of us who can think far better than we can draw.

Book Description

Paint by Numbers is the most exciting new kind of puzzle to come along in many years. These "picture logic" puzzles already have a following of millions of devoted fans in Japan, where they were invented five years ago. And now Games, the magazine that introduced Paint by Numbers to the United States last year, proudly brings you an English-language version of the Japanese book that started the craze.

The concept is brilliantly simple. You start with an empty grid; numbers above and to the side tell you how many squares in each row and column should be filled in. The trick is that the numbers don't tell you which squares to fill in -- that's for you to determine through logical reasoning and by working back and forth between the rows and columns. When you complete the puzzle correctly, you'll find you've made a picture!

Complete instructions and some time-saving tips are included at the front of this book, along with 123 puzzles ranging from easy to very challenging. This book will give every puzzle fan many satisfying hours of entertainment.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great........2007-05-16

I bought this book from the advertisement in Games magazine (the best). I am a huge fan of paint by numbers. I've completed every single one Games magazine has ever published (and most of World of Puzzles) for the last 2 decades. I was disapointed for 3 reasons: 1) the squares are too big. This takes way too much lead. This may also have something to do with the paper. 2) Most pictures are un-interesting. They are choppy (also due to the big squares), and many are symbols from Japan and are unfamiliar to an American. 3) Several are impossible to decipher after they're solved; I had to look up the solution just for the title to tell what the heck I was looking at. The bigger ones are much better, but you have to go through 85 of them before you get to them.

5 out of 5 stars Great Artwork.......2007-04-06

I worked four copies of this book before I was aware of other books of this type. I really enjoyed the art work in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Hours of pleasure.......2006-11-12

Like Games magazine, there are hours of pleasure to be found in doing these puzzles. If you are a sudoku fan, try these art/logic puzzles.

3 out of 5 stars A word of warning.......2006-08-15

This book is just a slapdash reprinting of Japanese book. The images in half the puzzles are of Japanese characters and references that most Americans would be unfamiliar with. Also, there are no special puzzles, such as the ones where you'd use two different colors of ink, for example.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2006-07-31

I just recently became interested in Paint by Numbers puzzles and one of my professors recommended Games Magazine. This book is helpful because it explains how to solve a Paint by Numbers puzzles. You can start off with simple puzzles and work your way up to harder puzzles in the book. The only complaint I have is that it would be easier to work on the puzzles if it were spiral-bound.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but be careful.......2007-09-24

I really liked this O'Ekaki. There were more puzzles than I would have liked that you had to make guesses, so that was a problem. But the completed puzzles are mostly really pretty, and so it was worth the effort of getting through those puzzles that weren't so well-constructed.

2 out of 5 stars Still too easy.......2007-08-04

Although this book has a few puzzles which are more difficult than the first one, it is still way too easy for anyone who has had any experience. Only for beginner-to-medium type solvers.

A mass culture obsessed with suburbia, leisure, and consumerism that sought access to high culture: that was 1950s America. Naturally, it was obsessed with paint by number, where all of these cross. A companion to an exhibition at the Smithsonian, Paint by Number follows the craze from its start to Andy Warhol's famous appropriation of the method in his "Do It Yourself" series. Paint by number pitted the creative against the mechanical, and deeply questioned art by giving everyone a paintbrush. This is a scholarly book and, at the same time, a comfortable read (as are most Princeton Architectural Press books), full of paintings, photographs, and ephemera such as advertisements and package designs, which alone stand as proof that one product can retell a critical part of the cultural history of America. It is a fantastic book for anyone interested in the intersection between art and culture in this fast-changing era. --Juliette Cezzar

Book Description

What is the fascination of paint by numbers? Is it the intoxicating and compulsive act of filling in small pools of color? Or the easy thrill of creating your own impressionist masterpiece? Or a fond nostalgic yearning for a craze that cut across national boundaries and age groups? Invented in 1951 by Dan Robbins-based on an idea used by Leonardo da Vinci to teach painting-the paint-by-number craze reached its zenith in the 1950s but continues even today as paints and kits are avidly collected, exhibited in galleries, and traded on eBay. In Paint By Number, author Larry Bird takes us on an unbelievable journey where art meets kitsch and popular and high cultures collide in a collage of home economics, leisure time fun, and art education, Bird revisits the hobby from the vantage point of the artists and entrepreneurs who created the popular paint kits, the critics who reviled them, and the consumers who enthusiastically filled them in and hung them in their homes. Paint By Number includes over 200 examples of paint-by-number ephemera and two pull-out paintings ready to be filled-in!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The gorgeous displays and ads for the medium are compelling.......2002-02-05

William Bird Jr's Paint By Number traces the history of a movement which swept across the country and created many a budding novice artist. Chapters provide plenty of color photo examples of a changing industry which recognized an unfulfilled desire in the common man to be an artist. The gorgeous displays and ads for the medium are compelling, even for the non-artist reader.

3 out of 5 stars Decent but wrong length.......2001-12-02

Bird does a decent job summarizing this kitschy topic in a succinct manner. In a sense though the length of this book is its worst enemy. He could have either been even more brief and cut about 50% of it to focus on the main issues rather than repeating himself. Alternatively, he could have truly explored the characterization of the individuals behind the craze as well as probed the American psyche and increased the length by 50%. Straddling the middle, Paint By Numbers ends up being pleasant but vaguely dissatisfying.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Trip Down Memory Lane.......2001-08-17

This is a really neat-o! book.

It's a short book, beautifully illustrated with paint-by-number paintings on almost every page (including paintings completed by J. Edgar Hoover, Nelson Rockefeller, Ethel Merman, and others). There are also lots of photos of advertisements, packaging and promotional displays used to sell the kits. The author discusses Max Klein & Dan Robbins, the men who started the paint-by-number "craze", and some of the other artists who worked on the kits. Despite heavy criticism from the art community, the kits were enormously popular in many countries.

I used to love doing these kits when I was a kid in the '60's and '70's. It may not be "art" but if nothing else I think people learn a little something about colors, shading and composition while working on these kits.

5 out of 5 stars Art by kit: a retrospective.......2001-05-31

This is a beautifully-designed, lavishly illustrated, great-looking, smart book - every page a treat - that is part art book, part pop adventure story, part trenchant cultural history and analysis. Without the irony or condescension heretofore prevalent in discussions about the 1950s' remarkably popular and widespread middlebrow hobby of painting by number, William L. Bird, Jr., a curator at the Smithsonian, starts from the beginning and tells all.

Leonardo da Vinci seems to have thought of it first, as a way to teach painting. In 1952 (after considerable work in the lab and at the drawing board) mass culture combined with smart American commercialism to sell eager Americans first, the rest of the world later - this surprisingly controversial and intensely pleasurable hobby: paint by number. The paintings and their deeply satisfying means of production were denigrated by cultural critics - and loved by millions of regular folks - and Andy Warhol, too.

Students of popular and consumer culture and advertising, those curious about a popular phenomenon that provoked the critics of art and culture to attack relentlessly - or anyone interested in reading about the fun of these paintings and how they came to be - will love this perfect book. The author's mind is flexible and fertile; he takes us on a terrific tour. Clever and funny in places, with a bibliography hundreds of articles and books long. Great book.

4 out of 5 stars PBN lovin.......2007-08-21

I rather enjoyed this kit. I liked that I had so many projects and they didn't take too long to do. My only concern is that some of the colors did not mix up like they were supposed to so the finished product was shaded differently.

1 out of 5 stars Paint by number sadness.......2007-08-21

Much to my chagrin, I had to return this item as I could not possibly see the numbers to know what colors to use. I was devasted.

4 out of 5 stars Good but small.......2007-07-01

I didn't have a problem with the printing I thought that was fine but the paintings are only about 4"x6" while I was expecting about 12"x20".

2 out of 5 stars printing on canvas boards pale.......2005-12-06

This would be a great paint by number kit if one could see the outlines of the picture on each board. It is so light you can hardly see the picture and the numbers for painting the masterpieces are completely unreadable. If anyone else has run across this please let Amazon know so they can fix this problem as I love paint by number kits.
I have run across this same problem with the Workman paint by number calendars also and quit buying them.
I will have to send this kit back as it is unusable.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected/wanted.......2007-06-29

I don't know about others, but the "paint-by-numbers" that I grew up with involves an actual canvas & paint. Neither of those elements are in this book. The book...which is what it is, not a kit of any sort...is simply a book about painting. It includes the diagrams that you can copy onto a canvas, but that's it. It was not what I wanted when I ordered something involving paint-by-numbers & I promply sent it back.

5 out of 5 stars great do-it-yourself art.......2006-07-09

It has always been my dream to paint a painting that people could actually look at with pleasure. I found this book, and now my walls are filling up with wonderful paintings I did myself! Not only are the instructions easy to follow, but the techniques can be applied to copy paintings other than the ones in the book. I just finished my own copy of THE STARRY NIGHT using these techniques, and it looks great! I recommend this book to anyone who always wanted to paint but never thought she could.

5 out of 5 stars Not your mother's paint-by-number.......2004-04-13

I just got this book and I can't wait to get my brushes dipping into paint. There are 30 masterpiece paintings in this book. From Botticelli to Whistler, with Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh, Klimt, Modigliani, etc. in between. All with directions, step by step photos, supply and palette lists, glossery and basic information on techniques. It is written for the Acrylic painter with some gouache, watercolor and pastel information for converting. It is not your old fashioned paint-by-number. These paintings have much more blending so that they look like the originals. What a hoot to paint your own version of the masterpieces.

              Product Description

From the Publisher One of the most important aspects of an artist's skill is their facility with various techniques. All practicing artists will over time develop their own style of drawing. Technique is the means by which that style is given expression. When an artist is well versed in a wide range of techniques, their creative vocabulary becomes richer and artistic possibilities are greatly increased. The Complete Book of Drawing Techniques is intended for artist who are looking to expand their knowledge and understanding of materials and the wide range of available media. It will teach them about the characteristics of these media and materials and how to use them to get the required effect. With unique combination of instruction and practice the book provides examples of the type of mark-making each media produces and follows these with a range of projects to demonstrate effective ways of working with them. By the end of the book it is hoped that every budding artist will have sufficient knowledge and confidence to utilize the techniques they have learnt in a broad range compositions of their own choosing.
