    Book Description

The pub scene across the world is characterised by its casual warmth and conviviality. It has none of the pretences or formality of a restaurant or cocktail bar. It is the relaxed setting in which friends and strangers alike can choose to meet. The pub is where we go to celebrate a special occasion with a group of chums, but also where we might go to flirt intimately with a prospective lover. It is a comfortable destination for seeking out the company of others. Whether located on a street corner in the Scottish Highlands, Munich or New Zealand, a favourite pub is defined by its own distinct atmosphere and character.

Pubs are distinguished as much by their interior décor, as by the beer and liquor they sell and the customers that mingle around the bar. These qualities combine to give a 'local' its particular appeal, with a draw far beyond its immediate locality. These very unique, idiosyncratic attributes of pubs, which were once taken for granted, are now in real danger of extinction, as bar chains with standardised  designs and drinks' menus are rolled out across city centres and main streets.

Turning its back on the trend towards homogeneity of today's watering holes,  Pub Scene celebrates the often exuberant, sometimes elegant décor, and always singular, wow factor of public drinking places, whether they are big or small, traditional or contemporary. In her engaging and anecdotal style, author Jane Peyton describes some of the world's best looking pubs, including British Victorian Gin Palaces, classic Art Nouveau Belgian café bars, Germany's  Beloved bierkellers, Australia's amazing beachside beer-gardens and  America's notable brew-pubs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for young budding artists.......2006-08-25

I got this for my sons 9th Birthday - it give the basics of 3D drawing in a way that children of his age can understand. I would recommend this book to people with children who enjoy drawing and would like to improve the results

4 out of 5 stars Good book to learn how to draw.......2005-09-26

I'm trying to learn how to draw now because I was afraid to take art classes in high school. This book has made it fun. I really liked the "how to draw cars" by the same author. This book was not as helpful but it is still a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Thank Heavens for Dubosque.......2005-09-13

With 8 grandchildren under 10 years of age, this book has delighted all of them. We have 3 budding artists and now the others are becoming more creative. The Dubosque books are an answer to parents who are not artistic or don't have the time to answer all their questions. With our schools eliminating many arts programs it will be up to parents to interest their children in the finer things, which begin with the basics.
Thank you for a delightful, useful book.

5 out of 5 stars Ideal for Pre-Teen and Beginning Artists.......2003-01-21

"DRAW 3-D" by Doug DuBosque is a friendly and painless introduction to the ABCs of perspective drawing. The text has a conversational feel and is easy to understand, using short words and simple explanations aided by 2-5 very clear illustrations (and an occasional photograph) on every single page.

I went through the whole book, practice-drawing as I read, in about a week, since it's only 63 pages and I was already familiar with some of the principles discussed thanks to the most excellent "How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way" by John Buscema & Stan Lee.

I think "DRAW 3-D" is easy enough for a kid of about 9 or older to understand most of it, and all of it if he or she has an older artist handy to explain and demonstrate (or to console and encourage, because it sure is exasperating when you forget which of those 20 straight lines goes where). It will not teach you to draw a perspective view from an object plan, or to draw a perfect square in perspective, but if you are completely new to perspective drawing and want a good introduction to the subject, this is the book for you.

Try it! If you reach the point where you don't need it anymore, and haven't become sentimentally attached to it in the meantime, it will make a great gift for anyone else interested in drawing.

            5 out of 5 stars Splendid!.......1999-09-24

I bought three beginning drawing books for my 9 year old, and this one was his favorite (one on how to draw cartoons was a close second). The first exercise, which is to spell out your name using 3-D letters, caught his interest right away, and he's been back to the book several times on his own initiative.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for learning to draw.......2007-08-23

I really enjoyed reading this drawing book. It was very helpful in teaching me how to draw from different perspectives. I believe that both novices and experts could learn some things from this book.

5 out of 5 stars More instructive than most books in this series.......2007-06-14

I love this book because it talks about perspective and gives detailed examples and advice on composition.
It even gives you info on the placement of characters in a scene. It's the best book out of the entire How to Draw Manga series. It's even useful for people who don't care for manga. I couldn't recommend it enough.

            3 out of 5 stars It's okay, BUT..........2005-08-29

..Other than what other reviewers have mentioned, I was a little disappointed the style of the inside manga had more of a butch 80's feel - the faces were uneven; didn't have wonderfully clean lines. The cover on the front gives you the impression (unless you know better) that THAT is the artist, or at least the drawing style.

But like what everyone has mentioned, it is a good book on teaching you persepective. It's just some things may distract you from the lesson at hand (if you're picky).

            5 out of 5 stars Truly comprehensive.......2004-11-23

This is the book to get if you want to learn perspective. It doesn't just teach you 1st ,2nd, and 3rd point perspective but also shows you how to draw slopes (up & down), forked roads, indoor and outdoor scenes, stairs, and the very important how to draw the relative size from one object to another.More specifically, it touches on the basics - standing on the earth, drawing the outdoors, distance of natural objects, drawing indoor scenes, how to draw backgrounds, and special effects and character representation using perspective.

I noticed an error in one of the examples but other than that, this book is highly recommended for budding or intermediate artist's whether you're interested in making manga or not. Getting your character to fit with the surroundings is key even when making pin-ups.

            4 out of 5 stars Manga Secrets.......2004-05-01

Good book, but in response to "A Reader" above, about MangaSecrets. The site DOES in fact deliver. If you did not get your product for some reason it simply a case of writing to the support email address? If you know anything about email, you'd know that a large bulk of it is begin deleted by your ISPs before it gets anywhere near you and the product is delivered via email... So *perhaps* that is what happened?.. Anyway just my two cents.

            Book Description

Explore the early days of Paleoindian archaeology in this engaging retrospective of Edgar B. Howard's Southwest Early Man Project, 1929-1937, co-sponsored by the University Museum and Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. This book contains a detailed analysis of the world-famous Clovis artifacts, discovered among the bones of mammoths and extinct bison in the Dust Bowl of eastern New Mexico. Blending traditional and current ideas, the authors offer an extended reference to the lifeways of early humans in the Americas, accented by a series of unique insights on their origins and adaptations. Well appointed with photos, line illustrations and schematics, Clovis Revisited is essential reading for professionals, students and avocational enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars Laboratory Archeology at Its Best.......2003-12-17

Clovis Revisited brilliantly addresses a major concern for modern archeology-- the interpretation of old museum collections in light of new archeological evidence. Archeology is by its very nature an adventuresome out-of-doors endeavor that is seen as a somewhat rugged "back to nature" kind of science. Behind this thin veil, however, is the true nature of archeological discovery-- the lab work. Unfortunately, many of the world's greatest archeological discoveries were made fifty to one hundred years ago, before the advent of modern archeological lab methods. The Blackwater Draw site in New Mexico, the type site of the Clovis culture, is one such site. That problem, however, was solved by Drs. Boldurian and Cotter in Clovis Revisited. This text provides a reanalysis of all the materials collected from the Blackwater Draw in the 1930s and 40s and systematically describes all the Clovis type specimens. This book is a must have for anybody, professional or otherwise, who is interested in the Clovis culture and the first discovery of the Americas.

                Book Description

The analytical psychology of Carl Gustav Jung, the ideas of Erich Neumann and modern developmental psychology offer excellent guidelines in the search for the significance of children's drawings. Children actually live in the mythological period of our ancestors. Just as our ancestors' growing process of awareness was reflected in mythological stories, rituals, fairy tales and primitive art, a child's process of awareness is reflected in his or her drawings. There are similarities between the products from various periods of art history and the drawings that children make at various ages. In 'Draw me a Picture' children's drawings ranging from their very first scribbles to drawings by adolescents are described and analyzed. And, when doing so, the author repeatedly makes links to the world of children's games. She also offers illustrative examples from her therapeutic practice. This book is a tool for play therapists, art therapists, sandplay therapists and teachers.
