Protein-Carbohydrate Interactions in Infectious Diseases (Biomolecular Sciences Series)
C A Bewley Manufacturer: Royal Society of Chemistry ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0854048022 |
Book Description
Protein-carbohydrate interactions is an exciting area of research with huge potential for development and exploration. These interactions are both widespread and diverse in biological processes and many play a crucial role in cellular recognition, attachment and adhesion. This is particularly true for host-pathogen interactions that lead to infectious diseases; as the surfaces of cells and pathogens display complex carbohydrate structures and carbohydrate binding proteins on their surface.
Protein-Carbohydrate Interactions in Infectious Diseases is part of the Biomolecular Science Series and provides a comprehensive overview of the subject, with contributions from leading experts in the field. Beginning with a general introduction, subsequent sections include:
- Atomic basis of protein-carbohydrate Interactions
- Structures and roles of Pseudomonas areuginosa lectins
- Protein-carbohydrate interactions in enterobacterial infections
- Retrocylcins: miniature lectins with potent antiviral activity
- C-type lectin receptors that regulate pathogen recognition through the recognition of carbohydrates
- Synthetic carbohydrate-based anti-malarial vaccines and glycobiology
- With full colour throughout and an extensive bibliography this book is ideal for researchers interested in the area

Glycoproteins and Disease (New comprehensive biochemistry)
Manufacturer: Elsevier Science Ltd ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0444803033 |
Book Description
The elucidation during the latter half of the 20th century of the mechanisms by which information flows from nucleic acids to proteins has completely changed the face of biological research. Many diseases are caused by abnormalities in control mechanisms which are not immediately essential for life itself but which maintain the normal social behavior of differentiated cells in multicellular organisms. The complex sugar chains of glycoproteins and glycolipids are believed to play important roles in the control of cellular functions and in recognition between the cell and its cellular and fluid environment. Investigations into the abnormalities of complex sugar chain assembly are expected to yield an important new underatanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of human diseases. This volume discusses several representative diseases which emphasize the current status of glycopathology, and will stimulate further research in this exciting field.

Platelet Glycoprotein Iib/Iiia Inhibitors in Cardiovascular Disease (Contemporary Cardiology)
Manufacturer: Humana Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0896037274 |
Book Description
The first comprehensive, definitive, and detailed overview of the preclinical and clinical development of the class of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor antagonists. Written by the scientists who discovered and characterized this class of receptors, invented the first IIb/IIIa agents, and conducted the definitive clinical trials, this book elucidates the theoretical basis for the inhibition of platelet aggregation in the treatment of coronary syndromes, presents and synthesizes evidence for the efficacy of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa blockade in inhibiting ischemic complication of coronary intervention and acute coronary syndromes, and provides guidelines for the use of this novel class of agents in the clinical management of cardiovascular disease. Platelet Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Inhibitors in Cardiovascular Disease offers today's physicians and basic scientists the most complete and authoritative review available of the state-of-the-art in glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitor use.

A Complete Introduction to the Field: Fuzzy Systems Theory and Its Applications
Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0126852456 |
Book Description
Fuzzy systems is a mathematical framework for dealing with uncertain, ambiguous, and approximate information. An alternative to traditional binary logic, fuzzy logic has proved to be better suited to solving complex, real world programming problems.**This book provides a concise overview of fuzzy systems theory and its applications. Written by the leading scientists behind the successful Japanese fuzzy systems research effort, the goal of the book is to introduce fuzzy systems as a practical tool. After presenting the basics of fuzzy systems theory, the book presents practical applications of fuzzy systems theory in a wide variety of fields, including artificial intelligence and expert systems, diagnosis, control, robotics, image recognition, databases, and information retrieval.Customer Reviews:

The Fuzzification of Systems: The Genesis of Fuzzy Set Theory and its Initial Applications - Developments up to the 1970s (Studies in Fuzziness and Soft ... (Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing)
Rudolf Seising Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Accessories:
ASIN: 3540717943 |
Product Description
In 1965 Lotfi Zadeh, a professor of electrical engineering at the University of California in Berkeley, published the first of his papers on his new Fuzzy Set Theory. Since the 1980s this mathematical theory of "unsharp amounts" has been applied in many different fields with great success. The word "fuzzy" has also become very well-known among non-scientists thanks to extensive advertising campaigns for fuzzy-controlled household appliances and to their prominent presence in the media, first in Japan and then in other countries. On the other hand, the story of how Fuzzy Set Theory and its earliest applications originated remains largely unknown.
In this book, the history of Fuzzy Set Theory and the ways it was first used are incorporated into the history of 20th century science and technology. Influences from philosophy, system theory and cybernetics stemming from the earliest part of the 20th century are considered alongside those of communication and control theory from mid-century.
Today, Fuzzy Set Theory is the core discipline of "soft computing," and provides new impetus for research in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

Integral, Measure, and Ordering (Mathematics and Its Applications)
Beloslav Riecan , and Tibor Neubrunn Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792345665 |
Book Description
This book is concerned with three main themes. The first deals with ordering structures such as Riesz spaces and lattice ordered groups and their relation to measure and integration theory. The second is the idea of fuzzy sets, which is quite new, particularly in measure theory. The third subject is the construction of models of quantum mechanical systems, mainly based on fuzzy sets. In this way some recent results are systematically presented.
