Book Description

On April 26, 1937, the Basque town of Guernica in northern Spain was bombed by Hitler's Luftwaffe in the midst of a bloody civil war on behalf of Francisco Franco's rebel forces. Twenty-four hours later, the village lay in ruins, its population decimated. This act of terror and unspeakable cruelty--the first large-scale attack against civilians in modern warfare-outraged the world, and one man in particular. Pablo Picasso, an expatriate living in Paris, responded to the devastation in his homeland by beginning work on Guernica, a painting that many today consider the greatest artwork of the twentieth century.

Weaving themes of politics, art, war, and morality, and featuring some of the twentieth century's most memorable and infamous figures, Martin follows this renowned masterwork across decades and continents. From Europe to America and, finally, back to Spain, Picasso's War sheds light on the conflict that was an ominous prelude to World War II and delivers an unforgettable portrait of a genius whose visionary statement about the horror and terrible wounds of war still resonates today.

3 out of 5 stars Has this author never heard of a split infinitive?.......2005-06-13

I'm midway through 'Picasso's War' and so far I'm really enjoying its content. It's a well-rounded account not only of Picasso's famous artwork, but of the history and social context and Picasso's life and personal situation at the time. However, I have one huge criticism, which is that this book is full of grammatical errors - namely split infinitives on just about every page. I don't expect every author who has something interesting to say to have a perfect grasp of grammar, but surely that's what an editor is for? The lack of good editing in this text has quite spoiled the experience of reading it for me. I read very widely and I can honestly say that I've never read such a poorly edited book in all my life. Pocket Books, Simon & Schuster or whoever you are, you've done a very poor job.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for a Light Read On Picasso.......2004-05-31

The book as a whole was rather well written, and, if someone asked me for a good nonfiction book about Picasso, there is a good chance that I would point them to this book. The book had good descriptions throughout, it was written for so that people who had very little understanding previously could understand what was going on, and the book was written so that it didn't have to be read all in one sitting. So, while I probably wouldn't pass it onto others, I feel that it was a good experience to read it.

3 out of 5 stars Good discussion - Visuals lacking.......2004-04-14

Picasso's War untangles much of the criticism of the artist during WWII for remaining in France. It is an excellent discussion of Guernica--the paintings beginning as rough sketches to the final product. The tragedy at Gernica is discribed vividly, putting the reader at the scene. Martin's take on Picasso is balanced--his outstanding talent and chauvenism toward his many women are discussed. My criticism of the book lies with the total lack of illustrations. As an artist I wanted to see pictures of the initial sketches, the painting in process and a good reproduction of Guernica, not just what was on the cover. The lack of illustrations makes the book much less effective for a visual person, artist or art historian.

5 out of 5 stars A Gripping Account Of Guernica - The Bombing & The Mural.......2004-03-17

On April 26, 1937, 100 aircraft of the German Luftwaffe's Legion Condor conducted a three hour bombing attack on the city of Guernica, a small Basque town, then held by the Loyalist Republican Army. The Germans were pressured into conducting the attack by Francisco Franco, the Spanish rebel leader. Guernica was approximately 10 miles behind the front lines and was crowded with retreating soldiers and refugees. The day was the normal market day for the town and surrounding area. Local citizens crowded the marketplace, doing their weekly shopping.

Two-thirds of the of the explosives dropped by the German bombers were 500 and 250 kilogram high explosive bombs and 20 pound anti-personnel bombs; one-third were 2 pound incendiary bombs. Approximately 1,654 people may have been killed and another 889 wounded in the attack. Reports indicate as much as 70 percent of the town was destroyed, with most of the rest heavily damaged. Fires ignited during the attack are reported to have burned for three days. Guernica fell to General Francisco Franco's advancing army two days later.

From his home in Paris, Pablo Picasso, Spanish artist and master painter, translated the shock, horror, sorrow and outrage he shared with his fellow countrymen and most of the world's people, into a gigantic black and white mural he titled Guernica.

Russell Martin tells the complete story of Guernica, starting with the events that lead to the creation of the painting and following Guernica as it moved from museum to museum, becoming ever more the important symbol it has become today - and one of the 20th century's greatest masterpieces. Martin examines Spain under Franco's fascist regime, the storied private life of Picasso, the messages of protest within the painting, and the controversy that surrounded Guernica.

This painting symbolizes all that is horrible and evil in war, and the resulting suffering that occurs in wars everywhere. "Picasso's War" has been named a Book Sense 76 selection of the US Association of Independent Booksellers. It is extremely well written and fascinating - educational, critical and very personal. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

3 out of 5 stars Great Read -- Great History?.......2003-09-08

Russell Martin has taken the history of the Spanish Civil War and a single work of art an woven them together into an entertaining and enlightening book. I am disturbed, however, by the author's Bibliographical Note, which begins "This narrative is intended for general readers rather than scholars, and for that reason I have chosen not to cite sources in the text or in accompanying notes. But I will be pleased to answer queries directed to me through the publisher about specific sources...." The author claims a great deal of detailed knowledge, from time to time stating with authority how Picasso felt in particular situations. It would be nice, even for a general reader, to know whether these conclusions were based on letters or interviews or the author's supposition...

Book Description

Of all the great paintings in the world, the story of Pablo Picasso's Guernica may tell us more about the last century's history than any other. In this new book by Gijs van Hensbergen, the acclaimed biographer of Gaudí, the author explores the life of this key cultural icon from its birth to the present day. He tells the story of the painting's beginnings, amid the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War; describes its use as a weapon in the propaganda battle against Fascism; tells how it traveled overseas to become the nucleus of the Museum of Modern Art's creation in New York; and finally writes movingly of its role as a symbol of reconciliation for Spain after the death of Franco, when it returned to that country as democracy was reestablished.

Guernica is a story of national struggle, political exile, and the power of art as a tool of protest and of healing. Ingeniously chronicling the last century using Picasso's visionary tableau, van Hensbergen offers a new way of understanding our own history.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary passions.......2005-06-27

Van Hensbergen's Guernica is a must-read masterpiece that covers art, history, passion and politics in equal measure. From war time France, through Franco's Spain, and on through the trials of McCarthyism to Guernica's eventual repatriation the writer doesn't miss a beat. I was stunned and excited by the new revelations about Picasso and extraordinary insights into the passions that underpin Picasso's astonishing and shocking work.

5 out of 5 stars A Learned, Fascinating Paean to the Importance of GUERNICA.......2005-02-24

Gijs van Hensbergen has contributed a fine volume to the libraries of books on the Atrocity of War, on the History of Spain under Franco's dictatorship, on the influence of Pablo Picasso on the development of the US as an art center after centuries of living in the shadow of Europe, of the Development of the very American art school of Abstract Expressionism, of the
rise and fall of Communism and its attendant 'McCarthy Era' of American isolationism, and ultimately of the journey of the infamous painting 'Guernica' from its creation in Paris to its world tour, its home in New York's Museum of Modern Art to its eventual return to the country that stimulated its creation - the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain.

Long first sentence: long journey. The author of this fascinating book packs so much information into the well-illustrated story that 'Guernica' reads like a novel yet informs like a treatise. Initially painted by Picasso in 1937 in response to Franco's Nazi-assisted 'training lab' annihilation of the city of Gernika in the Basque region of Spain. 'Guernica" has become a symbol of the atrocity of war, the capability of man's inhumanity to man, and the global fear of self-destruction if we are not more in guardianship of the forces of war machines that continue to grind down the surface of this planet.

van Hensbergen writes so well that the amount of information contained in this readable tome never overwhelms: it is just there as backup for every statement he makes. He firmly believes that 'Guernica' is the most important painting of the 20th Century, not only because of its critical breakthrough in the art world of the changes in representation (the Cubist movement), nor because of the rally against totalitarian force wherever it occurs (including the My-Lai atrocity with which the US bruised mankind in the Vietnam conflict, etc), but also because of the profound impact this painting had upon entering the USA, in easy access to the artists who responded to its power by developing the first truly original American art movement - Abstract Expressionism.

It is often said that the artist is the ultimate philosopher. Nowhere is this better stated than in this absorbing book about the power of a single painting on the course of history in the 2oth Century. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, February 2005

2 out of 5 stars Warning..........2005-01-19

Unless you are really into modern art, Picasso, and Guernica (the painting) you'll probably find this book a bit boring. Not that it isn't well written and researched, it is, but for the average reader something more was needed. I was looking for more insights into Picasso the man and a deeper look into those troubled times. About the only feeling in this book is a kind of leftist-elitist-snobbery. I'm about halfway through the book now and may finish it....

5 out of 5 stars Arguably The Century's Greatest Painting.......2005-01-15

"No, painting is not done to decorate apartments. It's an instrument of war for attack and defense against the enemy." So said Pablo Picasso, as World War II was ending. He must have reflected at the time that even the most famous painting-as-weapon had not really made a difference in a previous war or the current one. Still, his _Guernica_ had made an impression, and it still does. When war against Iraq was being considered, the United Nations's huge tapestry reproduction of the painting (originally made for Nelson Rockefeller, and donated by him to the UN) was covered up. A plain blue background was needed for the broadcasters in the building, said a UN spokesman; you won't be able to pull a cover on the upcoming carnage in Iraq, said an Australian delegate. In _Guernica: The Biography of a Twentieth-Century Icon_ (Bloomsbury) Gijs van Hensbergen has given a readable summary of both the art and the politics of the painting, from the history of the Spanish Civil War and the heinous bombing that it depicts to its eventual return to the Spanish republic. There is thus plenty of twentieth century history here, and art theory, and biography of the most influential painter of the century. It is all wonderfully well integrated and fascinating.

In 1937, Picasso was in Paris when he heard of the atrocity of the firebombing of Gernika (Basque spelling), far behind the lines and without military connections, arranged by Franco and carried out by the Nazis as an initial experiment in what we have come to know as "total war." He had procrastinated on a commission for the Paris Expo, but in a frenzy of inspiration, he drew his first sketches and five weeks later had completed the painting. After the Expo, the painting began its extensive travels, with the aim of giving support to the anti-fascists in Spain. Picasso refused to let it go anywhere in Spain until "a genuine Spanish republic had been restored." Picasso was satisfied with _Guernica_ settling in New York: "By means of _Guernica_ I have the pleasure of making a political statement every day in the middle of New York." But as a communist, his work was suspect, and the references to Franco and the Spanish Civil War were dropped from the label at the Museum of Modern Art. J. Edgar Hoover asked specifically that the US Embassy in Paris send any info on Picasso, even though the FBI had no business trying to get dirt on foreigners. The file on Picasso included asinine whoppers such as the accusation that he was a Russian spy. A congressman from Michigan state seems to have assumed a Rush Limbaugh-like role as radio commentator, railing against Picasso as "the hero of all the crackpots in so-called modern art" and that "critics who support modern art should be attended to."

Picasso died in 1973, and Franco in 1975. Franco had been increasingly ill and distant from actual power, and Picasso's work had gradually been allowed to be shown within Spain. Poster reproductions of _Guernica_ were popular. Picasso had not lost his bite, and gallery owners had to worry about vandalism, some of the worries proving to be entirely justified. The final section of the book deals with the difficult and labyrinthine negotiations to bring the painting back to the home it had never known. Politicians, lawyers, Basques, city boosters, and heirs all had to have their say, but eventually under extreme security, the massive canvass made a triumphal entry into Madrid in 1981, originally installed in a huge, guarded box of bullet-proof glass. One commentator observed, "Today the last exile has returned to Spain." That is the sort of tribute and the degree of importance attributed to _Guernica_ repeatedly through the book. Its detractors, frequently quoted here, may be many, and its influence in actually stopping war may be nil. It will forever haunt us, though, like a conscience that insists that someday war ought to be no more.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous Must Read!.......2007-09-09

Tricia Goyer has a way of weaving a host of intriguing characters and chronicling the Spanish Civil War and tying it all together within a "page-turning book". I love the romance, the history, the story of Sophie who is caught up in the drama showing both sides of the heartache of war. And who along the way discovers that it's her passion that holds the key to so much!

    5 out of 5 stars A winning story of a war-torn country.......2007-06-21

The first novel in a new series about the Spanish Civil War, A Valley of Betrayal unfolds with a distinctively Goyer-esque feel to it. In this book, author Tricia Goyer does another brilliant job bringing history to life with vivid characters searching for their meaning in the midst of conflict, each wanting to contribute their utmost for their cause.

In this time and place in history, it's the middle of the Spanish Civil War. The Nazi's are exerting their influence from one side, strong-arming Fascism over the country. At the same time, Russia is enticing the area with the idealistic vision of Communism. Spain is divided between the two political perspectives, and the resulting battleground ravages the country in the process.

The most serious fighting isn't found on the front lines, though, but in the internal struggle of every individual who must decide who they are and what they truly believe in. Some of the characters are natives of Spain; others from different countries who are drawn to the area for their own reasons. Some come to fight, and some to serve, but they all discover themselves in the process. Each naturally feels that their side has the most righteous cause, and all are willing to risk everything in the effort to win the war.

Goyer tries to communicate the struggle of a people searching for themselves amidst the rubble of their ideals. It's not an easy struggle, nor an easy story to read considering the cost of the war. But despite the fact that no one seems to emerge on top in this bloody battle, the novel itself is a winner. I highly recommend A Valley of Betrayal by author Tricia Goyer, and eagerly look forward to the next installment in the series.

5 out of 5 stars First Book In Tricia's New Series.......2007-06-14

I just finished reading Valley of Betrayal and it is very moving. Tricia writes in such a way that it makes you feel like you're in a war zone yourself. I would be reading along and realize that my heart was hammering as if there were bombs dropping outside. This is a very stirring novel. If you like historical Christian fiction then definitely check this one out.

5 out of 5 stars Historical ficion at it's best.......2007-04-13

The Spanish Civil War pitted the Spanish Republicans and their allies, the Soviet Union and the International Brigade, including many Americans against Franco and his fascist military troups, machinery and weapons supplied by Hitler and Mussolini. As in other wars, there were no clear lines between good and evil. It destroyed lives and tore Spain apart.

Sophia Grace traveled to Spain to be with Michael, her fiance, an international correspondent. She had no idea what she was getting into and war turned out to be a lot more personal than she expected.
Phillip Stanford, a member of the American track team became involved in the war because he refused to leave a friend. And Ritter Agler wanted to win the heart of Isanna, knowing she admired heroes. These three and others became entangled in a war that both intrigued and repelled them. although Tricia Goyer writes about war, she never loses sight of the people involved. Her characters are living, breathing individuals the reader will remember long after the book is finished. A fascinating, complex story about a little known time in world history.

    5 out of 5 stars A Valley You Won't Soon Forget.......2007-04-05

The Spanish Civil War, often ignored, is a prelude of sorts to World War II. Yet, it deserves to be more than a prelude, and Tricia Goyer gives it the attention it deserves through this new series of historical fiction, The Chronicles of the Spanish Civil War. In this war, the lines between the "good guys" and the "bad guys" are blurred. Fascism and Communism, neither of which seems desirable, are the two sides dividing the people of Spain who long for personal, religious, and political freedom.

Other people from other countries come alongside the Spanish people to fight for and with them. Disillusioned Deion, a black man from Chicago who wants to escape from the racism of the American South. Artist Sophie, who traveled from Boston to Spain for love, but instead finding her life's purpose in war-torn Spain. German pilot Ritter, flying for the cause he believes in so strongly. Philip, accompanying his friend but finding his own desire to fight along the way. So many others, whose stories tug at our heartstrings as we read this complex story.

To this reader who spent her adolescence at the end of the Cold War, reading about a time when Russians and Communism were seen as preferable by some, and not as enemies of the United States, seems a bit disconcerting. Knowing through hindsight that Communism in practice doesn't work as well as its ideals claim seems to add a fatalistic air around these characters laboring under its illusions and ideals.

The stories here are compelling. The characters are well-rounded and sympathetic on both sides of this civil conflict. Tricia Goyer does a fantastic job of making sure we readers are not able to choose a side, and this ability to make the characters sympathetic accentuates the brutality and incongruity of this war.

If you like the fiction of Bodie and Brock Thoene, you will enjoy this novel.

            Book Description

Perhaps no twentieth-century painting has captured the cruel effects of war as powerfully as Picasso's Guernica. For the first time we can understand the entire history of Guernica both as an artistic work and a document of the conflicting forces that shook the world during the 1930s. This rich account not only traces the extraordinary creation of the painting but also establishes the context in which the bombing took place and the form in which the news of it reached Picasso.
As Herschel Chipp demonstrates in his skilled analysis, Picasso initially pursued an idea for this work that had nothing to do with the struggle in Spain. When republican emissaries asked him to paint a large mural for the Spanish pavilion at the 1937 Paris Exposition, they left the subject to him. He began by sketching out a subject that had long interested him: the artist and his model in the studio, working together and engaging in amorous play.
Only after the German Condor Legion bombed the Spanish town of Guernica did Picasso turn from this highly personal theme to one that evoked the anguish of those who had endured the attack. But even as he turned to the theme of suffering, Picasso sought characters for his painting in figures familiar in his art: the women in his life and the animals, horse and bull, that fought in the corrida.
Once the bombing had begun to work on his imagination, Picasso finished Guernica in only twenty-five days. As Professor Chipp guides us through the day-by-day development of Picasso's masterpiece, he vividly conveys Picasso's transformation of all his materials into a wrenching cry against the suffering of war.
Finally, the work describes the odyssey of Picasso's canvas from its first display in the Spanish pavilion to its eventual arrival in Spain. Javier Tusell Gómez, the former director general of fine arts in Spain, contributes a chapter on the delicate negotiations that preceded the transfer of Guernica to Spain and the preparation at the Prado of a secure place to display the work.

                Book Description

Oils are perhaps the most versatile of all paint mediums. Yet for many artists oil painting is either shrouded in mystique or considered very difficult. Filled with clear, step-by-step instructions and surefire strategies, The Complete Oil Painter is an essential, one-stop guide to becoming an expert in every aspect of this medium. Artists will discover everything they need to know about materials (pigments, supports, canvases); tools and equipment (palettes, brushes); paint application (wet-into-wet, alla-prima, glazing, impasto); form and color (light and dark, expression, color mixing); exploring themes (still life, portraiture, figure painting); and much more.

5 out of 5 stars highly recommended book.......2007-08-20

This book is well organized, and offers practical information on the tools of oil painting, as well as organization and application. It does not give step by step lessons, nor does it suggest any particular style of oil painting. It is designed to aid the reader in whatever style or level. As a teacher of oil painting this is one of my most used books, and the one I recommend to my students.

I purchased this book because of all the great reviews it received. I was not impressed. Everything was way too simplistic. If you're an intermediate or professional painter, you will not learn anything from this book that you don't already know.

I was not sure what to expect having purchased other art books, but this is definitely a good book and I would recommend it to new and intermediate skill level artist. The Complete Oil Painter is well laid out and has much better example art than most books. I would highly recommend this book.

Gorst does an excellent job in walking the beginner through what they need and need to know to get started. It's promoted as being suitable for professional artists (I presume professional oil painters) - I'm not sure that an experienced painter will find much of use here. The images are good, providing an array of styles available with this medium. The subjects he chooses for the step-by-step practices are of a level of competancy not usually found in a beginner's book. Typically I've found the examples in other books to be rather bland - if you can reproduce the examples in here then you'll certainly have some paintings worth hanging.
My library of art books is approaching something like 250 items, covering all sorts of media as well as art theory, appreciation, history etc. The one thing that has struck me while pulling that collection together is, for the most part, Watson-Guptill produce an excellent range of books. The WG range aims at getting the beginner to an intermediate level ASAP and produce some quality art in the process, as opposed to the standard amateurish twee fare that other publishers, namely North Light Books, have folks churn out.
An excellent introduction to the world of oil paints. 100% Recommend.

A good introduction to oil paints and mediums, supports, equipment, methods, styles, and brief insights into studio settings. If you are looking for the science, yes, I said science, or concepts, or advanced applied techniques of oil painting including, but not limited to, sketching options, perspective, composition, color harmony, applicable color scales, brush stroke and blending techniques, edges, shadow to light, space/distance projection, highlighting and other artistic concerns involved in rendering a properly executed representational or realistic oil painting, you may need to consider trying to locate and purchase either the Frank Covino videos or the David Leffel video, or both! or sign up for some of their workshops: one can only learn so much, regarding oil painting, from books.
