Book Description

Methods of X-ray and Neutron Scattering in Polymer Science presents the basic theories underlying x-ray and neutron scattering--two of the most powerful tools for characterizing materials--and also covers the various techniques that have been developed for their application to the study of polymers. While there is a great deal of similarity between the x-ray and neutron scattering methods, the two were developed in different time periods by different groups of scientists, and as a result very distinct terminologies evolved to explain the same phenomena. In this unique text the two are presented together from the very beginning, with a consistent set of symbols and terminologies, so that students can become equally familiar with both from the outset. Also, to help students gain a unified view of diffraction, the distinction between wide-angle diffraction and small-angle scattering is postponed until late in the text. Methods of X-ray and Neutron Scattering in Polymer Science emphasizes basic concepts rather than details of specific techniques and derives relationships from first premises wherever possible. Beginning with coverage of the basic properties of x-rays and neutrons and their scattering from matter, it goes on to discuss methods of studying specific types of samples or properties. Topics covered include single-component crystalline and amorphous polymers; the small-angle scattering technique; binary, single-phase systems such as polymer blend and polymer solution; the technique of reflectivity measurement; and polymer dynamics by means of inelastic neutron scattering. A perfect introductory textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in polymer science,Methods of X-ray and Neutron Scattering in Polymer Science also serves as a helpful self-study tool for polymer scientists seeking an introduction to scattering techniques. Further reading lists at the end of each chapter encourage readers to explore more advanced topics on their own.

5 out of 5 stars Useful guide on scattering for Polymer Scientists .......2006-06-07

Ryoung-Joon Roe presents a handy reference and introduction to x-ray and neutron scattering, where emphasis is placed on using a terminology that helps the reader learn about both the techniques simultaenously. Scattering has served as one of the most important characterization tools for polymer community. This book outlines the basic mathematics and experimental details required to understand the structure and properties as revealed by these scattering methods in: crystalline and amorphous polymers, polymer solutions and blends, polymer dynamics and block copolymers. While emphasis is placed on demonstrating how all scattering shares similar theories and philosophy, the choice of several examples and applications of either techniques is used to remark on aspects peculiar to either X-ray studies or Neutron Scattering.

Since most serious students of polymer science are familiar with light scattering, the book would appeal them as perfect guide to familiarize themselves with limits and use of neutron and X-ray scattering. A more detailed discussion on Polymers and Neutron Scattering is found in the classic text by Julia S. Higgins and Henry C. Beno^it, while for Light Scatttering texts by Pecora & Berne and by Wyn Brown are essential references. Compared to those classic references, Roe's text will appear as more accessible to people seeking introduction to scattering methods. By the same token, it contains only the essence, the flavor of aspects of polymer behavior, say crystallization, surface studies or dynamics, and one will need to delve into the other texts if he seeks exhaustive discussion.

        Book Description

This handbook describes methods of preparation, characterization, toxicity, and therapeutic indices of transition metal complexes of the naturally occurring heterocyclic nucleobases and their derivatives. Modes of coordination are listed together with the relevant spectral data and major methods of investigation. Where appropriate, the spectrum of the sample is included in the pertinent section on spectroscopy. Data on the uncomplexed bases, such as solubility, pK, accepted structure(s) in the solid state and solutions, and the natural occurrence of the base are also included.Volume II of this work provides the spectroscopic data to accompany Volume I. Volume II is divided into two sections: Section 1 summarizes the data and Section 2 is comprised of figures. In Section 1, the complexes are arranged according to the method of study. In Section 2, figures are listed by base type and follow the sequence of Volume I, mainly complexes of the pyrimidine bases, nucleosides and nucleotides, and then purine bases, nucleosides, and nucleotides.

          Book Description

An authoritative review of the state of the art in the Nuclear Overhauser Effect-essential information for organic chemists, biochemists, biophysicists, and NMR spectroscopists
The field of NMR spectroscopy has seen tremendous growth in the last twenty years, particularly advances relating to Nuclear Overhauser Effect (NOE) spectroscopy-the most powerful technique for obtaining structural information on molecules in solution. Extensive and engaging, the Second Edition of the leading reference on the NOE is significantly updated to reflect the latest changes and new approaches in the field.
Neuhaus and Williamson provide an essential guide to the complexities and use of the NOE in a readily accessible, straightforward manner. Their practical handbook features a new chapter addressing the use of NOE data to calculate biomolecular structures. Chapters dealing with the kinetics of the NOE, the effects of exchange and internal motion, and applications of the NOE, are also extensively revised. Cross-referenced in remarkable depth, The Nuclear Overhauser Effect is organized into three main parts:
          * Part I describes the theory of the Nuclear Overhauser Effect in a clear, comprehensive fashion
          * Part II discusses the considerations involved in implementing NOE experiments, including full coverage of all necessary details for both new and established techniques
          * Part III offers examples of how the NOE is used, including applications to defining molecular geometry, stereochemistry, conformation, and biomolecular structure and interactions
The Nuclear Overhauser Effect in Structural and Conformational Analysis, Second Edition, uniquely explains the NOE in detail, making it an indispensable resource for the novice as well as the experienced NMR researcher.

The book presents the methodology applicable to the modeling and analysis of a variety of dynamic systems, regardless of their physical origin. It includes detailed modeling of mechanical, electrical, electro-mechanical, thermal, and fluid systems. Models are developed in the form of state-variable equations, input-output differential equations, transfer functions, and block diagrams. The Laplace-transform is used for analytical solutions. Computer solutions are based on MATLAB and Simulink.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for a first course in system modeling.......2005-06-17

I had to buy this book for my last semester in electrical engineering. It is a good choice as an introduction to mathematical tools used in representation and analysis of dynamic systems, electrical or mecanical.

First, there are a few chapters about basic notions of dynamic (translational and rotational. You can pass this part quickly if you had a few mechanic classes, because it is just to show the good way to represent systems in modeling. Next, a good explanation of state variable modeling, transfert function, linear vs non linear equations, etc, is well written, with good examples, without too advanced maths. If you have learned basic notions in calculus and linear algebra, you can follow the text pretty easily.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the subject.......2001-02-02

Professional engineering these days strongly rely on accurate mathematical modelling of systems. This book is a good introduction to the subject without loosing the link to the numeral solving techniques. Advanced mathematical equations are omitted so this text will serve only as an introduction and not as a complete treatment. Nevertheless, it is a good book when starting to study mathematical modelling of physical systems.

This text does a rather poor job of introducing the student to system dynamics. I think Dorny does a disservice to the students by treating everything in the frequency domain. Unclear and poor layout.

                              Book Description

This book presents a comprehensive treatment of the analysis of lumped parameter physical systems. The first portion of the book deals with the fundamentals of dynamics system modeling including a discussion of mechanical systems (translational and rotational), analytical solutions of ordinary differential equations and a discussion of state space theory. This book includes treatment of both input/output and state space models, analogies between physical domains (mechanical, electrical, fluid, and thermal) with an emphasis on the appropriate physical laws, an in-depth discussion of mixed (multi-domain) systems, and a discussion of nonlinearities and linearization methods. Contains chapters on Discrete- Time systems and digital control. It also presents a discussion of transfer functions, stability, and feedback control. It provides specific examples and problems geared toward MATLAB and SIMULINK as well as example files and supplementary files to run with MATLAB and SIMULINK. A valuable reference book for engineering and computer professionals responsible for systems modeling.

A great introduction to control theory. However, it would help if you know something about differential equations. I read Ogata's book on control (over 900 pages) from cover to cover twice and still could not figure out exactly what state variables are. This book explains things very well but you do need to do the problems at the end of each chapter. The use of "free-body" diagrams is a great idea.Ogata's book is great for explaining a lot of the details but this book explains the important things in a concise but easy to understand manner. I now finally understand how to draw a system diagram by starting from the inputs for each separate system. Everything is brought together -- system diagrams, transfer functions, state variables, the purpose for LaPlace transforms, and input-output models. This is not a book about control theory and it is covered in only the last two chapters but if you are taking, or going to take, a course in control theory, read this book first.
