Book Description
A unique book covering the possibilities of living and working in Scotland from the Borders and the great cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow to the Highlands and Islands.
Customer Reviews:
Good read.......2007-01-10
Very comprehensive guide to relocating to Scotland. It is disappointing that it is so hard to get into the U.K. to work and experience a different kind of life - unless you are highly educated, sponsored by a company that wants to hire you, or rich. It is still a good read, and the writing is very easy to follow.

Living in the Highlands
ASIN: 0500279349 |
Book Description
This luminously photographed book will dispel forever the notion that the typical Scots home is cheerless, dark, and forbidding. To the contrary, Living in Scotland bears witness to the Scots genius for timeless architecture and a vivid palette of rich colors and fabrics. For while the landscape is sometimes harsh, the interiors and gardens presented in this handsome volume offer an inviting tapestry of infinite variety, unexpected and constantly dazzling. Over the centuries the Scots have been great travelers and, consequently, great collectors. Their homes reflect an innate ability to blend the old with the new, the curious with the conventional. This splendid book transports the reader behind the faades of stately homes, small castles, fishing lodges, and inner-city apartments. With the exception of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's masterful Hill House, all the properties are private residences. Some, such as the Queen Mother's Glamis Castle, are well known; others, such as an astonishing Art Deco flat in Glasgow and Ian Hamilton Finlay's garden in Lanarkshire, are unexpected treats. The result is an absorbing view of the customs of Scotland and the Scots way of life.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful pictures!.......2006-07-24
This lovely picture book shows interiors and views from twenty-eight of the inhabited houses/castles in Scotland. Gorgeous furnishings and architecture from centuries past are still in use and well cared for. I enjoyed the short, historical notes and personal histories of the residents.
There was one jarring discontinuity: a new (1977) house built and furnished as a modern country house complete with modern architecture and furnishings.
Included in this book are pictures of Glamis Castle in Angus, Blairquhan in Ayrshire, Hill House in Helensburgh, Blair Castle in Blair Atholl, Traquair House in Innerleithen, Ardgowan House near the Firth of Clyde, Glentruim House in Badenoch, the estate of Mellerstain, Thirlestane Castle near Lauder, Newhailes House, Manderston in Berwickshire, Fordel Castle in Fife, a new modern house designed by James Morris near the Lothians, the "poet's garden" of Little Sparta in the Lanarkshire Hills, the house of Keith Schellenberg on the Island of Eigg, Craighall-Ratray above the River Ericht, Pitcullo Keep in the north-east of Fife, Bardrochat in the south-west corner of Ayrshire, Kinveachy Lodge near Boat of Garten, a Highland smithy converted to a one-story home, a mini-mansion on Tweedale lands, Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfriesshire, and also the city homes of six Scots in Edinburgh and Glasgow: William Mowat Thompson - owner of the Theatre School of Dance and Drama in Edinburgh, Ken McCulloch - restaurateur and hotel-owner in Glasgow, Susie Raeburn - an advocate in the Law Courts in Edinburgh, Broderick Haldane - international society photographer, Andrew McIntosh Patrick - Managing Director of the Fine Art Society, and Chris Clyne - international dress designer.
Book Description
Melville Henry de Massue (styled the Marquis of Ruvigny and Raineval) produced, in this work, one of the great achievements on royal and noble genealogy. In it he traces all the living descendants of King Edward III as of the date of original publication, some 50,000 individuals with over 300,000 lines of descent between them. Included in the Roll are the names of all the crowned heads of Europe; of the majority of hereditary peers; of all the royal and princely houses of Europe; of many of the higher nobility of France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Bohemia, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Russia, and Belgium; and of the old aristocracy of the Southern States of America, together with baronets and county gentry. The five volumes together comprise some 3,550 pages, illustrated with portraits, photographs, and line drawings, and each volume is completely indexed . Originally published in a very limited edition, The Blood Royal has never before been reprinted.

Living in Scotland
ASIN: 050001986X |
Book Description
The Highlands of Scotland--spectacular, rugged, and breathtakingly beautiful--have always maintained a strong sense of individuality. This is the land of the Picts, the Gaels, and the Vikings, all of whom left behind their imprint on the land. Modern-day Highland living must deal with the same problems that have always prevailed: remoteness and an unpredictable climate. Yet those who choose to live among the mountains, lochs, and glens of northern Scotland would never wish to live elsewhere and they have created homes of distinctive appeal and considerable comfort. This book reflects the mix of tradition and style in the Highlands: tartans and tweeds, the traditional march to the Lonach Highland Games, a visit to sumptuous Inveraray Castle, casting for salmon on the river Dee, a Burns Night dinner with the "Toast to the Haggis." 204 color photographs and illustrations.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderfully informative look at these islands.......2004-02-20
This fascinating book was first published in 2002, and gives an up-to-date look into the history of Barra and its adjacent islands (the southernmost Outer Hebrides). It begins with a look at the geology and ecology of the islands, and then moves into their history, going from the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago to the enforced emigrations of the mid-nineteenth century. Along the way, the reader is treated to many pictures (most black-and-white, but some color), and a good deal of in-depth analysis.
While a little on the dry side, this book is, nonetheless, a wonderfully informative look at these islands. The authors led a team from the University of Sheffield, which explored these islands for thirteen years, often performing the first archeological digs ever performed on them. If you are at all interested in the Outer Hebrides, then I highly recommend this book to you.

Book Description
How can the history of birth weight add to our knowledge of women's living conditions in the past? In this study of newborn weight and economic growth in Boston, Dublin, Edinburgh, Montreal, and Vienna between 1850 and 1930, W. Peter Ward explores the relation between infant size, economic development, and living standards of working-class women in the industrializing West.
Drawing on clinical records from urban maternity hospitals and outpatient services, Ward compares birth weight between cities and traces changes in fetal size during a period in which some cities experienced dramatic economic development while others stagnated. Because fetal growth is strongly affected by maternal nutrition, Ward's research sheds new light on the well-being of working-class women whose living conditions have long been obscure and exceedingly difficult to examine.
This book will interest social and economic historians, as well as scholars of women's studies and the history of medicine, and its lessons on the distribution of social benefits during economic change have immidiate relevance for today's developing countries.

Book Description
Trees are hanging from the sky, their roots are snakes, or sometimes rivers, their leaves are fish. Are those roots entwined in clouds or stars? Our hero's mother warns him about nightmares, but he doesn't mind because he loves these trees. Even so, it's a good thing his bed is close to the ground because he is a little bit scared of heights and, when his dream knocks him out of bed, he doesn't have far to fall.
