Book Description
Gamma-ray spectrometry is a key technique in the study of the decay of radioactive materials. Used by scientists from a wide range of disciplines, problems can be encountered by the inexperienced user because there is a deceptive simplicity in gamma-ray measurements which can hide significant pitfalls. To resolve this situation, the authors of Practical Gamma-Ray Spectrometry have drawn on many years of teaching experience to produce this uniquely practical volume, giving comprehensive coverage of the whole gamma-ray detection and spectrum analysis processes. Discussions of the origin of gamma-rays and the issue of quality assurance in gamma-ray spectrometry are also included. Practical Gamma-Ray Spectrometry is written with the user in mind and has the following benefits:
- Mathematics are kept to a minimum throughout.
- No previous knowledge of nuclear matters or instrumentation is assumed.
- Detectors and their associated electronic systems are discussed.
- Fault-finding guide ensures that any problems can be sorted out with the minimum of fuss.
Practical Gamma-Ray Spectrometry will enable all those involved with radioactivity measurements to get the most from their equipment. It will also be of great value to teachers and students in departments where radioactivity is studied, such as physics, chemistry, environmental biology, archaeometry and radiochemistry.

Some examples do not work with Mathematica Version 2.......2000-02-28
Helpful, at first, and authors intimately knowledgeable in Mathematica. However they could not have verified that all their examples actually work in practice e.g. page 179 rel. plotting normal probability distribution. The Mathematica website leads to numerous references to the problem underlying this coding error. This is frustrating for a beginner.
Good for beginners but not enough..........1999-05-14
This is very good for beginners(as title said). But within 2months, it wasn't necessary for me. If i were you, I would borrow it from library and read it then give it back. That's enough...

Book Description
Because of its large command structure and intricate syntax, Mathematica can be difficult to learn. Wolfram's Mathematica manual, while certainly comprehensive, is so large and complex that when trying to learn the software from scratch -- or find answers to specific questions -- one can be quickly overwhelmed. A Beginner's Guide to Mathematica offers a simple, step-by-step approach to help math-savvy newcomers build the skills needed to use the software in practice. Concise and easy to use, this book teaches by example and points out potential pitfalls along the way. The presentation starts with simple problems and discusses multiple solution paths, ranging from basic to elegant, to gradually introduce the Mathematica toolkit. More challenging and eventually cutting-edge problems follow. The authors place high value on notebook and file system organization, cross-platform capabilities, and data reading and writing. The text features an array of error messages you will likely encounter and clearly describes how to deal with those situations. While it is by no means exhaustive, this book offers a non-threatening introduction to Mathematica that will teach you the aspects needed for many practical applications, get you started on performing specific, relatively simple tasks, and enable you to build on this experience and move on to more real-world problems.
Customer Reviews:
The most bug-ridden book I've ever seen.......2007-05-14
The number of bugs, errors, typos, misplaced code snippets and screenshots must be seen to be believed. In many cases text that is supposed to be formatted Mathematica -style is printed as plain text within the flow of the normal text, leading to isolated words or code fragments between sentences (pp. 43). In some places screenshots have nothing to do with the content at all (p. 25), then again screenshots are repeated pointlessly (pp. 19 and pp. 79). There are several instances where code snippets are repeated verbatim over a range of pages, almost placeholder-like (e.g. pp. 28, where the same snippet is printed three and a half times).
Until a corrected edition is available, save your money.
-deficient.......2007-01-29
It stands to reason that this book needs other reviews. First of all, it's co-authored by the author
of several of the 'DeMystified' guides to subjects in physics and math (linear algebra, in particular).
These are fairly clear and concise, if slightly truncated (the linear algebra). The larger size of this
book would then lead one to see it with great anticipation.
Needless to say, it was a very BIG disappointment. The layout and discourse of the subject matter
make its initial acquaintance very unengaging. Various topics in Mathematica are hard to find, and
less than helpful explanations are often provided (if at all). Potential purchasers need not be misled
here! The text, in NO WAY resembles the appearance and organization of the co-author's other pub-
lications. Even some of the print was missing in later pages of the book. There are some Mathematica
files to which I was led, from the author's suggestions accompanying the 'promotion' of this book.
These are overly complicated, esoteric, and very hard to understand ... hardly 'grist' for ANY kind of
'beginner'! Let that further disuade you. Much better 'Intros to Mathematica' available (for example,
Cheung, Keough, et al). In light of my knowledge of, and the efforts I've been making in searching
for quality Mathematica materials, read-my-print: SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Technical users--STAY AWAY.......2003-09-08
Do not buy this book in paper form. The meat of the material, what little there is, is offered only in the electronic version of the book. Thus, anytime in depth explanations are required they refer you to the e-form, or tell us to consult the Mathematica Book which accompanies the software package. They are cronies of Matematica, so they do nothing to point out the limitations of the software and only show us what they think is important, therefore, the representation of the book as being a "guide", beginners or otherwise, is a misrepresentation. DO NOT WASTE THE MONEY OR THE TIME TO READ THIS BOOK. There is infinetly more information in the Mathematica book and for technical applications there are a wealth of books written by independant authors whos do a much better job of explaning and illustrating the power of this awesome software package. Consider yourselves warned.
