    Book Description

This book describes mathematical techniques for interpreting measurements of greenhouse gases in order to learn about their sources and sinks. The majority of the book gives general descriptions of techniques, but the last third covers the applications to carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbons and other gases implicated in global change.

    Download Description

The critical role of trace gases in global atmospheric change makes an improved understanding of these gases imperative. Measurements of the distributions of these gases in space and time provide important information, but the interpretation of this information often involves ill-conditioned model inversions. A variety of techniques have therefore been developed to analyze these problems. Inverse Problems in Atmospheric Constituent Transport is the first book to give comprehensive coverage of work on this topic. The trace gas inversion problem is presented in general terms and the various different approaches are unified by treating the inversion problem as one of statistical estimation. Later chapters demonstrate the application of these methods to studies of carbon dioxide, methane, halocarbons and other gases implicated in global climate change. This book is aimed at graduate students and researchers embarking upon studies of global atmospheric change, biogeochemical cycles and Earth systems science.

      Book Description

Fate and transport models are critical components in the determination of the exposure to and risk from hazardous contaminants. Analytical models are preferable because they are generally more accessible, more reliable, and require fewer computational resources. Surprisingly, until today, only a limited number of analytical models have been accessible in the literature. Now, there is Diffusion Models of Environmental Transport, which provides more than 40 analytical models of diffusion and advective-diffusion in one, two, and three layer systems, subject to a wide range of boundary and initial conditions. This text illustrates applications to contaminant transport in sediments and soils, including porewater and vapor transport, and also provides Mathcad spreadsheets to aid in the use of these models. The authors supply complete details of the solutions to the models for those who wish for a deeper understanding. For others, who do not have the time or the need, the solutions themselves are ready to be picked up and used. Reible and Choy use their 20-plus years of cumulative experience to create a thorough exploration of fate and transport models. This comprehensive text furnishes an invaluable reference for students and environmental professionals.

        Book Description

In the last few decades there has been increasing recognition and interest in evaluating air pollution problems over mesoscale and synoptic-scale. In particular, the most serious problems of our atmospheric environment at mesoscale, such as urban air pollution and the behaviour of urban scale plumes downwind of large industrialized cities, regional haze, photochemical smog, acidic precipitation, accidental toxic gas and radioactive releases, and stratospheric ozone depletion have received tremendous public attention.

This monograph presents a collection of invited review papers covering this complex phenomenon. All the contributions have been written by leading scientists in the field and provide the reader with organized and consistent discussions on different aspects of mesoscale atmospheric dispersion. The material featured will be of great interest to researchers and students examining mesoscale meteorology, mesoscale dispersion, atmospheric boundary layer, and air pollution meteorology.

            Description:
An analytical technique to solve the Eulerian advection-diffusion equation for nonstationary conditions and passive contaminant within the Planetary Boundary Layer is analysed in this paper. The approach produces comparable results when considering the most important quantity in air-pollution application, that is the ground level concentration distribution. This is a promising result as this computer-based technique may be used for quantitative and qualitative estimations of contaminant distribution.

              Description:
Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute has developed an emergency response system WSPEEDI to forecast long-range atmospheric dispersions of radionuclides discharged into the atmosphere. The latest version of WSPEEDI consists of an atmospheric dynamic model MM5 for calculating meteorological fields and a particle random-walk model for atmospheric dispersion. The performance of WSPEEDI was evaluated by data obtained from a field tracer experiment over Europe (ETEX) in this paper. The model validation was done with respect to the following points: (1) the dependence of model accuracy on the temporal and spatial resolutions of the meteorological fields and (2) the superiority of an atmospheric dynamic model over a mass-consistent wind model. Regarding (1), it was shown that the calculation accuracy of the new version with high temporal resolution was improved, especially at the edge of the plume. Moreover, although the increase in horizontal spatial resolution of the old version had no substantial effect on the model performance, increase in horizontal resolution of the new version contributed to the significant improvement of the calculation accuracy. These results showed that the dynamically calculated meteorological field with the spatial resolution of the meso-@b-@c scale greatly improved calculation accuracy.

                Description:
Data-driven constituent transport models (CTM), which take surface current measurements from High Frequency (HF) Radar as input can be applied within the context of real-time environmental monitoring, oceanographic assessment, response to episodic events, as well as search and rescue in surface waters. This paper discusses a numerical method that allows for the evaluation of diffusion coefficients in anisotropic flow fields from surface current measurements using HF Radar. The numerical scheme developed was incorporated into a data-driven CTM and through model error analyses, the effects of using spatially variable transport coefficients on model predictions were examined. The error analyses were performed on the model by varying the cell Reynolds number, Re=f(u,K,@Dx) between 0.15 and 100, where u is the velocity vector within the flow field, K is a diffusivity tensor and @Dx is the computational grid cell size. Two instantaneous releases of conservative material were then modeled, the model being initialized at two different locations within the domain. From the two simulation runs, marked differences in the predicted spatial extent of the conservative material resulting from the spatially varying diffusivity values within the study area were observed. Model predictions in terms of variance or size estimates of a diffusing patch were found to be more affected from using inaccurate diffusivity estimates, and less affected from using inaccurate current measurements. The largest errors occurred at Re>2 associated with changing diffusivity values, going up to as much as a 25-fold difference in variance estimates at Re=100. Very little effect on variance estimates due to varying velocity values were observed even at Re>2. This model was applied within the framework of constituent tracking to Corpus Christi Bay in the Texas Gulf of Mexico region.

Java Modeling in Color with UML--printed in color--provides four UML "archetypes" for common entities in business modeling. These have rather abstract names like the moment-interval. Each archetype is assigned a different color in UML. The book uses these four archetypes to model 61 domain-specific business components for manufacturing (including suppliers and inventory control), facilities management, sales, employees, and organizations, plus accounting and document management.

Similar in spirit to software-design patterns, these UML components are catalogued with short prose descriptions and illustrated with UML. The detail here is often impressive, though the type is necessarily small. (Fortunately, the CD-ROM contains all these diagrams--including Java source code--for use within your own designs.) The authors--all experts in UML--have done the heavy lifting here. The idea is to incorporate these components within your own projects.

Besides a catalog of expert components, this book describes the authors' Feature-Driven Development (FDD) software-design process. (While there is one UML standard, design processes still proliferate.) FDD touts good productivity with a minimum of overhead. The authors argue that it can be used productively within today's ever-shorter business cycles.

In all, this book features much more than just color-enhanced UML. It provides a foundation of UML (and Java classes on the CD-ROM) that can model most business problems. If you design with UML, you can surely benefit from this intelligent and visually savvy text. --Richard Dragan

                      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great Concepts but ..........2007-06-12

The book's UML diagrams are very necessary for understanding the book but the diagrams are illegible due to the use of miniscule font. The text of the book has a good font but half or more of the pages of the book are UML diagrams.

5 out of 5 stars It does stand the test of time.......2007-04-26

This is an excellent book. It is, however, terse and has taken me a long time to get to grips with its content and language. I have had to read several of the Coad books to 'get it' but it's finally coming together. I would recommend you read it in conjunction with (or maybe after reading) "Streamlined Object Modeling" by Jill Nicola (and would love to see her do a follow-up book). To those that say there is no Java in the title: look at the CD.
To be honest I think all the Coad books are good (the "Java Design" book is really good too and was my first contact with Coad's books), some are dated but still stand up. They do take a lot of the guesswork out of modelling.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the Java.......2003-10-18

Though "Java" is in the title, this book is not limited to Java, and, indeed, there are no Java code examples. Usage of UML, however is extensive. The book presents an approach to generalizing business components (modelliing patterns - referred to as archetypes) that really helps one to understand the structure and interaction of business components. I use this book as a regular reference. It includes a near-complete business component model through 12 compound components.

2 out of 5 stars Nice concept, but too limited to have staying power.......2002-05-06

I often test the utility of a book by one of two ways:

                      1) Did it expand my thinking?

                      2) Do I constantly refer to it after reading it the first time?

The seminal patterns book, Design Patterns - by Gamma et al, (also known as the GOF) passes both tests. This book does not.

I haven't had much use for this book since purchasing it in 1999. It seems Ironic, somehow, since enjoyed the Togethersoft UML refresher training I received in 2000.
Together/J, supports the UML methodology, and also supports for the these models outlined in the book.

That said, it's worth borrowing a copy to see for yourself. I'd also recommend downloading the current 'whiteboard' edition from Togethersoft.

Jeff Grayson borrowed my copy when he was working on a project to improve VIANT's software development methodology with the Rosetta project.

                      2 out of 5 stars quite unhappy.......2001-09-27

The text walkthroughs for each UML diagram (which is most of the book) is practically useless since it mostly only reiterates what one obviously sees on the diagram. I wished at least one set of these diagrams was carefully explained, then I might have gotten something out of it. You can read the book many times as I have, but I don't think it will really help you with addressing one or more modelling challenges you might have.

Software design patterns let developers reuse tried-and-true designs in new projects. For the state of the art in object design, consider Patterns in Java, perhaps the best book that Java developers have at their disposal for getting leading-edge pattern expertise in a convenient and well-organized volume.

The guide opens with background on pattern research, including the groundbreaking Design Patterns. This new title goes further, with 41 software patterns, all illustrated with UML diagrams and sample Java code. Early patterns, such as Delegation and Proxy, show how classes can work together without relying on inheritance. Next come creational patterns, such as the Factory and Builder patterns and the newer Object Pool pattern (which can be used to pool database connections for faster performance).

Subsequent sections move on to partitioning patterns, such as the Layered Initialization, as well as structural patterns, such as the Adapter, Facade, and Flyweight patterns. A section on behavioral patterns mixes older patterns such as the Chain of Responsibility and the Strategy with newer designs such as the Little Language and Snapshot patterns. The book closes with seven newer patterns for designing distributed and multitasked systems. --Richard Dragan

                      Book Description

"This is the best book on patterns since the Gang of Four's Design Patterns. The book manages to be a resource for three of the most important trends in professional programming: Patterns, Java, and UML."
—Larry O'Brien, Founding Editor, Software Development Magazine

Since the release of Design Patterns in 1994, patterns have become one of the most important new technologies contributing to software design and development. In this volume Mark Grand presents 41 design patterns that help you create more elegant and reusable designs. He revisits the 23 "Gang of Four" design patterns from the perspective of a Java programmer and introduces many new patterns specifically for Java. Each pattern comes with the complete Java source code and is diagrammed using UML.

Patterns in Java, Volume 1 gives you:

Bought this book for my nephew. His comment was "there are a lot of good parts, but you have to search for them."

5 out of 5 stars The 2nd edition is not that bad.......2006-08-26

I haven't seen the first edition of this book.

The examples are rather good and the diagrams are in UML. Compare it to diagrams in [GOF95] which are written in some wierd ancient notation.
Although the exampled are in Java this book is good for C++ devs. This books is the fastest way to understand design patterns.

5 out of 5 stars For learning design patterns..........2005-07-29

This book covers roughly the same territory as the GOF (Gamma, Helm, Johnson, Vlissides) book, only with simpler examples, in Java.

I found it easier to read than GOF; it gave me with a better overall understanding of the topic in general, and of specific design patterns. Grand's book may be slightly less valuable as a reference, however, when you need to actually use one of the patterns.

3 out of 5 stars May be helpful.......2004-06-22

The help this offers is for students who haven't learned a lot of languages yet. For them, the effort of picking Java sense out of C++ or Smalltalk may defeat the rest of the pattern discussion. For them, Java code samples and references to familiar Java library elements can make all the difference.

For the rest of us, this book has decidedly mixed value. The real problem is that Grand seems to equate the terms "desgin pattern" and "good idea". Design patterns are good ideas, at least in the right context, but not all good ideas are design patterns.

For example, delegation of responsibility is a good idea. It's the basis of any system decomposition. I have trouble justifying that as a design pattern - you may as well say that passing function parameters is a design pattern. It's just too broad. At the other end of the spectrum, Grand points to "marker" interfaces, Java interfaces with identities but not content, as a design pattern. Again, this is a useful but language-dependent hack. Ada or C# would have done the same things with attributes, and C++ could have done the same using marker fields or values in the class. Language tricks aren't patterns.

Still, many of Grand's patterns are good ideas. The "Object Pool", for example, is a common and useful pattern. It's closely related to two GoF patterns. It's like a Singleton, except there's more than one of them. It's like a Flyweight, except the units aren't distinguishable or shareable.

One real annoyance is the tendency of this Volume I to refer to necessary information in Volume II. If the author is going to create independently saleable units of book, they should be independently readable. I do not appreciate the implicit plug for the author's other work.

I use this book, but mostly for its bad examples. Think hard about whether this is the way to spend your budget for DP books.

1 out of 5 stars Beware - Spammer on Board.......2003-10-17

About every month or so I get spammed by this author touting his great seminars so I thought I'd give his book a shot. I guess you could say that he finally wore me down. Luckily I actually purchased the book used for $2 and still think I was royally ripped off.

The book begins poorly and gets worse. Specifically, the author definitely has a pension for patronizing his audience. He speaks as though he invented Patterns and is delivering them to the masses after bringing them down from the mountains inscribed on clay tablets.

Now, I'm not a guy to worry too much about a few typos here and there. After all, mistakes are made in code and text alike. However, the author's examples are not at all practical to the point of being useless and far too many of them flat out don't work!!

I'm not so much upset about the measly two bucks as I am about the several hours lost trying to decipher what the author meant and working through the typos. Anyway, hopefully this review will save someone else the time I lost.

Create more powerful, flexible applications using a new extension of the XML standard
Programmers are finding that the XMI extension of the XML standard provides a lot more flexibility in writing software for sharing data. Written by one of the principal authors of XMI, this book provides programmers with everything they need to know to best utilize this extension. The authors cover the basics first, detailing the essential concepts and explaining how XMI relates to XML and UML. Readers will then learn how to program with XMI, including how to express data in XMI, create XMI documents with Java, and merge documents. Samples of real-world XMI applications are also included throughout the book that show how IBM is using XMI with data warehousing and how to convert simple relational databases into XMI.
CD-ROM includes sample XMI source code and software tools for developing XMI and XML applications.

                        Book Description

Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a general-purpose programming language for specifying and visualizing complex software, especially large, object-oriented projects. Object-oriented programming is when a programmer defines not only the data type of a data structure, but also the types of operations/functions that can be applied to the data structure. Java is a general purpose programming language with a number of features that make the language well suited for use on the World Wide Web. Fully road tested from the authors own courses, Object-Oriented Design with UML and Java shows how considering the modeling and programming languages together from the start can be beneficial, shifting the emphasis away from detailed programming issues, and instead allowing the focus to fall on the analysis of the meaning and accuracy of the model. No prior knowledge of object orientation is assumed, though some knowledge of Java or other high level programming language is required.

                        * Integrates design and implementation, using Java and UML
                        * Includes case studies, exercises and a free software tool for hands on learning
                        * Bridges the gap between programming texts and high level analysis books on design

Great book, however we're using EclipseUML which seems to be more widely used now. It would be nice to be written with that program in mind. Also would be nice if it was converted to American English. Some analagies are hard to understand if you're not familiar with Brittish colloquialisms. Also, author uses Textio class to do outputs. Why not just use the System classes? Seems unnecessary to me and an extra level of confusion for beginners.
