Customer Reviews:
don't waste your money.......2007-03-22
The book is an absolute rip off! the content is not even close to be considered basic. It fails to provide any help whatsoever for running an instrument and/or to familiarize undergrad students with the technique. The images, drawings and graphs are of extremely poor quality and rarely helpful. If you are trying to learn about the technique, this book will leave you more confused and with more questions than answers.

Book Description
With a level of detection of one part in 1015, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a highly sensitive tool in a huge range of analytical applications. Development of the technology continues rapidly, further opening up the scope for this invaluable analytical technique. Despite widespread interest and usage, little has been written to describe the analytical techniques and instrumentation in a format accessible to both new and experienced users of the technique. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry Handbook provides a thorough description of ICP-MS instrumentation and techniques, giving the reader sufficient knowledge to approach the technique with confidence.

Book Description
The book starts with a detailed description of ICP-MS, including quadruple-based, sector-based and time-of-flight instruments. Instrumentation from existing manufacturers is described and compared to show their similarities and differences. Also, a review of the ICP-MS literature is carried out to outline both the strengths and limitations of the technique, whatever its brand, as well as what it can currently accomplish in terms of applications. Then, the book demonstrates how these limitations can be reduced and/or eliminated by combining various techniques with ICP-MS. Great detail is provided on each technique so that the reader can get a good understanding of it before carrying on to the instrumental requirements for its hyphenation to ICP-MS, and the resulting impact on the operation of the hyphenated instrument. Since this book is concerned with the ICP side only, which is fairly similar in all the instruments from the different manufacturers, the information should be useful to all ICP-MS users. The features and limitations of each technique are thoroughly discussed and illustrated with a review of the ICP-MS literature. Approaches which could be used but have not yet been tried with ICP-MS are also suggested. This is particularly true of flow injection techniques which are extremely flexible and have been used extensively in atomic spectroscopy and spectrophotometry. Many of the features of the technique have not yet been combined to ICP-MS, and one purpose of the book will be to point out potentially beneficial combinations.

Book Description
These fifteen essays explore the archaeological applications of an exciting new field of research in materials science. Since the first archaeometric uses of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) in the early 1980s, most applications have required the processing of solid samples with heat and/or strong acids. This is time consuming, expensive, and sometimes dangerous.
An alternative sample-introduction technique, laser ablation (LA), became commercially available in the mid-1990s. The coupling of laser ablation with state-of-the-art inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometers (ICP-MS) has resulted in the development of extremely sensitive microprobes capable of determining most elements of the periodic table. Already recognized as an invaluable technique in earth sciences, zoology, and botany, the use of LA-ICP-MS is being explored in archaeology.
Robert Speakman and Hector Neff bring together writings that specifically describe laser ablation, methods for data quantification, and applications. Originating in New World and Mediterranean sites, the materials whose analysis are described here include paints and glazes, ceramic pastes, lithics, human teeth and bone, and metals.

ICP Emission Spectrometry: A Practical Guide
ASIN: 1405135948 |
Book Description
The first edition of Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry and its Applications was written as a handbook for users who wanted a better understanding of the theory augmented by a practical insight of how best to approach a range of applications, and to provide a useful starting point for users trying an approach or technique new to them. These objectives have been retained in the second edition but a slight shift in emphasis gives the volume an overall perspective that is more forward looking. Structured into 11 chapters, the current edition is a thorough revision of the original, covering the principles of inductively coupled plasmas, instrumentation, methodology and applications within environmental analysis, earth science, food science and clinical medicine. Each chapter, written by internationally recognised leaders in their specific subject areas, provides enough detail to be useful to both the new and experienced users. Full account is taken of recent developments, such as high resolution instruments, novel detection systems and electrospray techniques. Written for all analytical scientists but particularly those involved in atomic spectroscopy and in environmental, geochemical, clinical or food analysis, this timely and informative book will be an essential reference in their use of inductively coupled plasmas to achieve their own scientific goals.

Description:
A ^2^3^4U and ^2^3^0Th determination method based on an extraction chromatographic separation on a flow injection system coupled to a quadruple ICP-MS was developed. Two-milliliter UTEVA (Eichrom Co.) cartridges were applied as separation tool and ^2^3^6U and ^2^2^9Th as spikes. Loading and washing steps were carried out in 3M HNO"3 solution and 0.05M ammonium oxalate applied to elute both uranium and thorium. The method was applied initially to the IAEA-327 soil reference sample and NIST SRM 4357 ocean sediment reference material, with the obtained ^2^3^4U and ^2^3^0Th concentrations in agreement with the reference levels. Samples from a deep-sea sediment core (2450m water depth) were analyzed and based on ^2^3^0Th/^2^3^4U dating, a mean sedimentation rate of 3.3cmky^-^1 was calculated. Samples from two sediment layers were also dated by ^1^4C-AMS and the observed ages agree with the ^2^3^0Th/^2^3^4U results.

Book Description
Geometric measure theory has become increasingly essential to geometry as well as numerous and varied physical applications. The third edition of this leading text/reference introduces the theory, the framework for the study of crystal growth, clusters of soap bubbles, and similar structures involving minimization of energy.
Over the past thirty years, this theory has contributed to major advances in geometry and analysis including, for example, the original proof of the positive mass conjecture in cosmology.
This third edition of
Geometric Measure Theory: A Beginner's Guide presents, for the first time in print, the proofs of the double bubble and the hexagonal honeycomb conjectures. Four new chapters lead the reader through treatments of the Weaire-Phelan counterexample of Kelvin's conjecture, Almgren's optimal isoperimetric inequality, and immiscible fluids and crystals. The abundant illustrations, examples, exercises, and solutions in this book will enhance its reputation as the most accessible introduction to the subject.
Customer Reviews:
Up-to-date reference........2000-05-04
This thin book (175 pages) provides the newcomer or graduate student with an illustrated introduction to geometric measure theory: the basic ideas, terminology, and results. The author has included a few fundamental arguments and a superficial discussion of the regularity theory, but his goal is merely to introduce the subject and make the standard text, "Geometric Measure Theory" by Federer, more accesible. This second edition includes updated material and references, corrections, and a new chapter on soap bubble clusters.
Its contents are: Measures, Lipschitz functions and rectifiable sets, normal and rectifiable currents, the completeness theorem, area-minimizing surfaces, the approximation theorem, regualrity results, monotonicity and oriented tanget cones, flat chains, varifolds, minimal sets, soap bubble clusters.
Includes excercises, plenty of illustrations, and extensive references.
Highly useful for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in analysis and geometry. The "next step" for fractal geometers.
If you want to buy it maybe it should be better to wait for the third edition to appear by June 2000.
