Book Description

In 1999, historians at the Virginia Historical Society acquired three curiously bound volumes of drawings and documents created between 1821 and 1858 by a long -- and unjustifiably -- forgotten architect named Thomas R. Blackburn.
Further inspection revealed that these were, in fact, no ordinary documents, but a unique window onto the life of a distinguished builder and his revered master: Thomas Jefferson. In these extraordinary books, we find Blackburn, at first a young carpenter, engaged in the construction of Jefferson's famed "academical village" at the University of Virginia. He simultaneously embarked on an ambitious program of architectural study, guided, it appears, by Jefferson himself. The drawings he executed in the four decades that followed -- extraordinary ink and watercolor explorations of his many residential and civic commissions -- bear witness to his emergence as a mature and prolific architect in his own right.
In Jefferson's Shadow is a unique document of the relationship between an unknown but highly skilled country builder and the American statesman widely considered this nation's first gentleman architect. But it is also an indispensable resource on the little-understood practice of architecture in the early and mid-nineteenth century.

5 out of 5 stars little-known early American architect and his work and influence .......2006-12-02

Thomas R. Blackburn's recently discovered architectural drawings and related papers at the Virginia Historical Society provide a look at his "architectural education." Blackburn worked on the University of Virginia with Thomas Jefferson and afterwards went on to build notable buildings on his own in Virginia's Piedmont region and Shenandoah Valley. Among these buildings are the Western Lunatic Asylum and the John A. G. Davis House. The discovered drawings and related papers are reproduced, most one per page, in over 150 color plates following the 100 or so pages of biographical and evaluative text by Green, an architectural historian teaching and writing mostly on Virginia architecture. Overall, text and plates establish Blackburn as an important and in some ways seminal first-generation American architect who widened the geographical range of the classic architecture related mostly to Jefferson.

Book Description

Process is integral to every clay piece, and this volume follows the logic of the steps of creation. The beginning chapters explain the early steps such as clay preparation and the various techniques of making. Following chapters are devoted to the later steps of drying and firing. Also included are numerous glaze and clay recipes, using a range of widely available materials. Complex and large-scale work, always demanding special attention and specialized knowledge, is comprehensively covered.

The European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC) is an international studio dedicated to the ceramic arts, in all of their various forms. Drawn from the resources at the EKWC, this volume elucidates every aspect of the ceramic process, from wedging clay to packing kilns. This useful resource will be valuable to potters of every skill level. Extensively and vividly illustrated, the book demonstrates complicated techniques visually. In addition to the helpful diagrams, works produced at EKWC are used as examples of the methods described in the text, offering specific uses for procedures.

The Ceramic Process emphasizes the experimentation with materials and technique that is crucial to a potter's development and success. Ultimately, the reader will gain an understanding of every aspect--artistic as well as technical--of the creation of ceramic pieces.

This is not about the book, but about Amazon. Initially, the book arrived printed upside down in the binding and
with it cut badly with the tops of the pages missing. Following an email, Amazon reversed the charges and sent a new book which arrived in good condition. I would give Amazon high marks for addressing this problem.
The book itself is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Best buy for those serious about clay.......2007-01-24

Phenomenal book. It covers the entire ceramic process from the constituents of the clay to drying, firing and glazing or decorating. The descriptions border on the scientific but are written in such a way that you can pick the book up to read for leasure.

Within its pages you will find how to mix a clay for a specific purpose, how to support huge statues and keep small tiles straight. How to fire bisquit and how to glaze (in detail and with recepies, but this is not a glaze book) or decorate. Whether you want to cast 10 thee pots or make a lifesize sculpture of an giraffe you will find hints and tips on how to do it. Everything you need to take your ceramics over the edge.

The artworks that illustrate the book and are used as examples might not be to everyones taste (they come from a school for experimental ceramics afterall) but they fit the explanations perfectly.

If you are serious about your ceramics and want to buy one book that explains the process without specialising on only one type of application (tiles, pots, sculpture) look no further!

If you are new to pottery of sculpture the contents might be a bit daunting.

ASIN: 0834804425

Book Description

This practical and supremely useful manual is the first comprehensive, hands-on introduction to Japanese ceramics. The Japanese ceramics tradition is without compare in its technical and stylistic diversity, its expressive content, and the level of appreciation it enjoys, both in Japan and around the world. Inside Japanese Ceramics focuses on tools, materials, and procedures, and how all of these have influenced the way traditional Japanese ceramics look and feel. A true primer, it concentrates on the basics: setting up a workshop, pot-forming techniques, decoration, glazes, and kilns and firing. It introduces the major methods and styles that are taught in most Japanese workshops, including several representative and well-known wares: Bizen, Mino, Karatsu, Hagi, and Kyoto. While presenting the time-tested techniques of the tradition, author Richard L. Wilson also accommodates modern technologies and materials as appropriate. Wilson has gathered a wealth of information on two fronts—as a researcher of Japanese pottery and art history, and as a potter who has studied and worked for years with master Japanese potters. In his introduction, he provides a short history of Japanese ceramics, and in closing he looks beyond traditional methods toward ways in which Western potters can make Japanese methods their own. Richly illustrated with 24 color plates, over 100 black-and-white photographs, and over 70 instructive line-drawings, Inside Japanese Ceramics is indispensable for potters as well as connoisseurs and collectors of Japanese ceramics. Above all, it is an invitation to participate—to study, make, touch, and use the exquisite products of the Japanese ceramic tradition.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An essential guide for the potter or the collector........1999-04-07

This volume presents not only the "how-to" of Japanese ceramics, but broader considerations of their significance within the context of world ceramics. Richard Wilson has not only trained extensively with Japanese potters, but is also thoroughly familiar with the many historical ceramic types which form the tradition which continues today. Virtually no art potters today remain unaffected by the tremendous impact of Japanese ceramics, and Wilson's book provides the contemporary ceramist with a reference that is at once useful and inspiring. The text is clear and straightforward in the explanatory sections while at the same time conveying to the reader the fascinating historical and cultural context on which the many techniques are based. The color illustrations are first class, and the technical photographs, illustrations and diagrams are clear, easy to read and appropriately placed. As in his earlier volume, The Art of Ogata Kenzan, Wilson has taken great pains to ensure that his information is both accurate and as complete as possible. Eschewing past tendencies of Western ceramists to mainly focus either on the externals of Japanese pots or on a touchy-feely, pseudo-philosophical/religous approach, Wilson sees the essence of Japanese ceramics as intrinsically linked to production process and functionality. As he summarizes, "(The Japanese ceramics legacy) suggests... renouncing artistic individualism... and rededicating oneself to personal discipline and harmony with materials, processes, and the user community. It implies thinking about the pots as part of an ongoing process, a relaxed conversation with the world, rather than as a kind of personal decree." Through this book, Richard Wilson has provided a great volume of reference not only for those who "do" ceramics, but for those who love ceramics as well.

    Book Description

Kids will happily dig into the soft, malleable medium, exploring its possibilities. They’ll break the clay apart, rejoin it with water, try to model it into recognizable shapes, and cut out great big slabs to design. Pictures of professional sculptures, as well as objects created by kids, fill the book. Children will think it’s playtime—you don’t have to tell them they’re learning, too.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars hands-down the best.......2005-05-11

This book is extremely useful for classroom teachers and homeschooling families alike. It slowly and thoroughly works through the progression of skills from first using clay to creating finished sculpture. The chapters include information for teaching the skills, multiple examples of professional artwork that can be studied to view the technique at hand, tons of pictures of student work with the age of the student identified (very helpful for knowing how to set your expectations at a realistic level) and every chapter includes free exploration ideas as well as specific exercises.

    Chapters:

    Explorations
    Making Sculpture
    Sculpting in Relief
    Animals
    Heads and Faces
    Figures
    Improving Sculptures
    Finishing and Displaying Sculpture

I have taken classes with Cathy Topal; she teaches in the Education department at Smith College, helping prospective teachers learn how to teach art. The care and attention she has taken to laying out the exercises in this book clearly reflect this experience - she can think both like an experienced teacher of art and like a mentor to new teachers. This book is a valuable purchase for any art teacher or homeschool family and can be used with students from age 4 to high school level. It will grow with your child and can be used over and over to explore topics in more depth in subsequent years. I give it my very highest recommendation.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2005-11-11

The BEST book a beginner can get on glazing. Explains alot of the chemicals used in glazes and breaks it down for you (what they do etc). I would get this book before you get other glaze books.

5 out of 5 stars the ceramic glaze handbook.......2005-09-30

Very informative for beginner even. Well explained and pleasant to read. Like it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Only 1 remaining error on page 118.......2002-02-21

When I ordered the book, there was no reader's reviews. All three reviews appeared the next day after I ordered the book. I would not have purchased it if I had read those reviews. However, when the book arrived, I checked it against the corrections [website] and found that all but one error have been corrected (foot note for middle picture on page 118). There is no indication that the book in my hands is a second printing.

This book is well illustrated and extremely well organized for easy comprehension. The pictures of the test tiles for major colorants laid out in a modified 2 x Y factorial design is extremely informative. The format of having one illustration by each formula is the most inspiring and useful way of presenting the formulae. Get this book and Hopper's the Ceramic Spectrum if you want to start formulating your own glazes.

5 out of 5 stars The Ceramic Glaze Handbook.......2002-02-20

Our ceramics instructor and I (perennial student) found this book in a local library and our class loves it. We participate in a potter's guild situation, not an academic fine arts class, so the clear explanations in this book by Burleson help cut through the haze of what glazes are made of, how to take care of them, and how to experiment with them. We can't wait to get started.

        3 out of 5 stars Ok book...but...has errors.......2002-02-15

This is a decent book, but...there are a number of errors in it. Be sure and get the corrections from the publisher at:

        http://mercury.larkbooks.com/glaze/correct.pdf
        http://mercury.larkbooks.com/glaze/index.pdf

Other than that, it is a good book on glaze materials, mixing, and application. Includes a variety of recipies for use at various cone temps.

Updated info...the second printing has corrected the errors that I mentioned above.
