Timothy Beatley delivers description not analysis.......2007-03-25
Timothy Beateley did an excellent job describing European cities and their sustainability policies. Overall it is a solid, technical approach with detailed information about policy, institutions, research. But somehow he does not succeed in convincing me about appropriate tactics to enhance sustainability in cities. He just offers extensive, I must say, rather optimistic appraisals of European cities and their policies. Yes, European cities do have advantages compared with the avarage American city. A medium sized European city mostly has a compact urban form and does nut suffer from extensive urban sprawl. But Beatley fails to distinguish between good intentions and results in urban planning. I fear that mostly his descriptions are based on rather biased information, including mine, on the possibilities and realities of European planning. He bases his analysis on the charters with good intentions, policy documents and congresses. He seems to oversee the fact that even European cities do not succeed in reducing the ecological footprint. I would rather divert the attention towards the conceptions of the real possessors of power, the builders, the industrial entrepreneurs, the image makers. The selling of sustainability seems to me the most challenging issue. Policy makers have temporarily lost their interest and are not able to implement their well intended policies.

What exists is possible!.......2005-08-25
As a college student with a focus on planning and green design I found Timothy Beatley's book inspiring. So inspiring in fact that I am travelling to Europe this fall in search of solutions to urban issues of sustainability which can be used in the states. I agree with the reviewer who said that there are large differences in structure, funding and politics in Northern Europe but I strongly disagree with his dismissive assertion that those solutions are irrelevant or impossible in the United States. What exists is possible. Livable, walkable, sustainable cities are important for people everywhere and we should look for ideas anywhere we can get them.
As for Beatley's "slanted" case studies, he includes at the end of each chapter examples of similar initiatives and programs in American cities. Personally I don't think the author is scolding American cities for not being progressive so much as offering examples of what is possible. Are we capable of "Learning From European Cities?" Absolutely. Can they be adapted to the realities of American cities? Of course.
Ample introduction on how to make cities "Green".......2000-06-13
Beatley shows there is much to learn from the Europeans when it come to the ecological and environmental city planning. Although it would be hard to implement European planning practices on American soil, it brings a new, and beneficial perspective that many can use towards an incremental change.
Customer Reviews:
Many photos of the restored frescoes in great detail with fine articles.......2006-02-23
The huge project of the cleaning and restoration of the Sistine chapel has been completed for more than decade (of course it is continuous and ongoing). It was a huge project that aroused fiery controversy. Even though the ceiling had become almost completely obscured by centuries of smoke and repeated applications of varnish (early attempts to protect the treasured frescoes), some felt strongly that the restoration proposed would ruin the ceiling. In one way, it does make sense that the ceiling that generations had known was the work then on display. The yellowed color scheme and dark views were all that anyone living and the generations previous had known.
This book does not document the ceiling as it was, but does provide wonderful detail of how the process of restoration was decided upon, what was done, what was learned during the process, and page after page of glorious pictures of the frescoes. The articles are by well qualified scholars and discuss quite interesting aspects of the works including the use of assistants by Michelangelo, his colors and their use, those poses and clothing of the characters, the chapel itself, and much more. There is even a foldout section to see the entire ceiling.
This is a fascinating book for anyone interested in understanding the Sistine Chapel as it exists today. You can easily find pictures on the web contrasting how it used to look with how it looks today. To me, it seems obvious how wonderfully the restoration was done and how necessary it was. However, I can see how some would feel a sense of loss that what they had known for generations is now gone.
A Wonderful Book.......2000-03-28
As a student with two jobs I do not have much time for art. Recently I have taken an interest in the classics. I was at a bookstore one day and this book caught my eye:
The work of Michelangelo is wonderful. This book really brings to life this masters artwork in a way that is beautiful and breathtaking. The part I love most about this book is that before and after pictures are shown of Michelangelo's work (pre and post restoration). It really brings vibrant life and color to work that seems sometimes to be forgotten. Also lots of people think that Michelangelo was not very creative in his color usage, after seeing this book, you will truly see that he is a GENIUS. Even if you are not into art...this book will make you see art and especially Michelangelo in a different way. Get this book. You will not regret it.

Book Description
Published to controversial acclaim in 1977, The Assassination of Paris describes the transformation of the Paris of Raymond Queneau and Henri Cartier-Bresson; of quartiers of carpenters and Communists and country folk from the Auvergne; of dance halls and corner cafes. Much of Louis Chevalier's Paris faced the wrecking ball in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, as Georges Pompidou, Andre Malraux and their cadres of young technocratic elites sought to proclaim the glory of the new France by reinventing the capital in brutal visions of glass and steel. Chevalier sought to tell the world what was at stake, and who the villains were.
He describes an almost continual parade of garish and grandiose plans: some, like the destruction of the glorious marketplace of les Halles for him the heart of the city, were realized; others, like the superhighway along the left bank of the Seine, were bitterly and successfully resisted.
Almost twenty years later, we find it difficult to remember the city as it was. And while Paris looks to many much the way it always has, behind the carefully sandblasted stone and restored shop fronts is a city radically transformed—emptied of centuries of popular life; of entire neighborhoods and the communities they housed engineered out to desolate suburban slums. The battle over the soul and spirit of the city continues.
This book is not entirely about the loss of physical places. Or a romance about a world that never really was. It is a cautionary tale filled with lessons for all who struggle to protect the human scale, the diversity, and the welcoming public life that are the threatened gifts of all great cities.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful...BUT.......2001-12-11
Rizzoli, and the Vatican, have produced a beautiful volume; the colour reproduction, binding, and printing are first rate BUT it seems that no-one bothered to read the text before the book was printed. In a not very careful reading of the text I found a number of glaring errors that cast very serious doubt on the reliability of any information contained in this book. Thus, I cannot give this book more than 2 stars.
I have been in contact with Rizzoli about this matter and they have provided me with some corrected information that I will share on request.
Cost $250 to buy the back wall of the Sistine chapel.......2001-07-19
Yeah, maybe someone(nearly everynoe) will think this is an SO Expensive art book. But at first, there are so many details of the original work in this book, and more detail than you standing at the wall of the Sistine Chapel, even if you travel to Vatican, you can't see as clearly as see the pictures on the book; you can see the face of Ave Maria, the hand of Jesus, you will NOT see them with human-to-god view, but equal view. Second, print quality is nearly PERFECT. Third, the book had two volumes, one was filled with colourful illustrations, and the other is a bonus--the study of "the Last Judgement".
Book Description
Building forth upon recent developments in democracy theory that have identified multiple forms of legitimacy, this volume observes a EU-wide shift from output legitimacy to input and throughput legitimacy. Top down policy making is increasingly meeting local resistance. As a result, the importance for policy makers of enhancing the democratic legitimacy of their policy plans has increased.
In this volume, nine case studies are presented, seven case studies of protected areas in different countries (Belgium, Germany, Poland, Spain, Finland, France and the UK), and two case studies of protected species (the geese in the Netherlands, and the great Cormorant in Denmark and Italy). These case studies are followed by extensive comments. The volume opens with an introductory chapter on the problematic production of legitimacy in current European nature policy. It concludes with a chapter that situates the case studies within the wider EU environmental policy and political context.

Book Description
Examines key themes for the management of historic urban centers within a representative sample of centers in different European countries. The twelve historic centers that have been chosen are spread throughout Europe. They are diverse in character and the range includes small towns, cities and urban centers within cities. Some have been designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites or Cities, while others have recognition, or have been proposed as European Cities of Culture. They have all faced different problems and a variety of approaches have been utilized which are also examined.
For each of the historic area in the book the authors broadly cover a number of common themes: the policy and planning framework; management and regeneration action; environmental management; tourism and heritage management; and sustainability.

Customer Reviews:
Complete instructions for starting thangka painting .......2007-01-11
Excellent book on Thangka painting methods and materials. What I found after reading this book is that there are many similarities in painting Greek Orthodox Icons and that reminded me of something else that I had read in a magazine on spiritual subjects, that in the early days of Christianity when there were monks in hermitages in the desert outside Egypt there was a Tibetan monk or priest that went there and met these Christian monks and when he saw how they were trying to meditate he taught them the correct way to do that (the Buddhist way) and this is the reason that Orthodox Christian meditation is very similar to Buddhist meditation. And there was also in the article a photograph of an Orthodox Monastery from the Holy Mountain of Athos and this Monastery looked exactly like another famous Monastery in Tibet as another photograph from Tibet was showing. So to the author of the article it was evident that there was contact even from very early times between these two religions. Greek religious icons are painted on wood but they like the Tibetans use colors in a powder form and they also use the gold color. And in general there are many similarities. But asides from all that this is a very good book on Tibetan Thangka painting and it is highly recommended.
Book Description
This book is the only detailed description of the techniques and principles of the sacred art of Tibetan scroll painting.
Customer Reviews:
Must have!.......2001-10-20
This book is a must have for anyone interested in ancient Tibetan art and culture. It penetrates deep in to the tradition and lore involved in the creation of Thangkas.
It's even great on a technical level, giving us grids and proportion when painting Buddhas. The authors even explains how to create the pigments with authentic materials; as well as telling us where in the world to find them.
Indispensible resource.
The Ultimate ýHow toý book of Thangka Painting.......2001-04-04
This book assumes an interest in Thangka paintings. The book then proceeds to elaborate, step by step and in great detail, the process of creating one of these art works from the grinding of the color pigments to the finishing details with a brocade frame. If you are interested in this art form you couldn't ask for a better guide. Well written and thoroughly complete, it also includes drawings of any and every detail found in these paintings. If you are interested in creating a Thangka painting of your own this is the book for you.
