New Challenges in Superconductivity: Experimental Advances and Emerging Theories: Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop, held in Miami, Florida, ... II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1402030843 |
Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the 2004 University of Miami Workshop on Unconventional Superconductivity. The workshop was the fourth in a series of successful meetings on High-TC Superconductivity and related topics, which took place at the James L. Knight Physics Building on the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, Florida, in January 1991, 1995, 1999, and 2004. The volume includes high-quality papers on state of the art works on unconventional superconductivity. A key issue, discussed by many in the workshop, was how homogeneous the cuprates are. STM data, as well as other reports, showed that the cuprate superconductors (SC's) studied were inhomogeneous, especially in the underdoped regime; while experiments, like ARPES and magnetoresistance have established the existence of a Fermi Surface, at least above some doping level, in the cuprates. Other topics ranging from the pseudogap problem to pairing mechanisms are also discussed by various authors. In general, experiments show more convergence than high-TC theories. There is definitely no consensus on the high- TC mechanism, although two broad groups exist: those around the extended "Big Tent" homogenous scheme, and those who assume an intrinsic inhomogeneous state. Another division could be viewed between those who consider the high- TC mechanism to be essentially of an electronic-magnetic origin (with no role played by the lattice), and those who assign an important role to the lattice. There seemed to be a consensus in the workshop that MgB2 and the fullerenes are simpler SC's than the cuprates, while work on ruthenocuprates and the coexistence of SC and ferromagnetism provided new stimuli to research and understanding. Interest was drawn also by the new NaxCoO2•yH2O SC. Although this is a low-TC material, its physical properties have a similarity to those of the cuprates; thus research on this system seems to be important for the understanding of high TC SC. The volume gives a brief overview of many facets of present day superconductivity research and should be of great interest to all scientists and research students who work in the field of superconductivity or related subjects in condensed matter physics and material sciences.

Mathematical Modelling with Case Studies: A Differential Equation Approach Using Maple
Belinda Barnes , and Glenn R. Fulford Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0415298040 |
Book Description
Mathematical Modelling with Case Studies provides students with a firm grounding in basic modelling skills applicable to a wide variety of problems. The focus is on models involving differential equations, with the solution of differential equations as the primary technique used. The models considered relate to growth and decay processes, interacting populations, and heating/cooling problems, but the range of applications and mathematical techniques presented provide a broad appreciation of the scope of this type of modelling, while the skills developed readily transfer to many other areas. Within each modelling section of the book, the authors carefully consider the procedure for constructing a model, emphasizing a start simple, evaluate, and then extend process. They use flow diagrams and word equations and discuss the assumptions made, consequent limitations, and impact on the interpretation of results--a structured, detailed approach that has proved a successful learning strategy. Along with theoretical and computational tools for analysis, the authors also encourage graphical methods and integrate throughout the text MAPLE code and its ensuing results. The prerequisites for this text are minimal, including only a basic knowledge of calculus and fundamental computing skills. Thus the book is an excellent choice both for mathematics students and for those in the many other fields of study that require some expertise in modelling.

Applied Contaminant Transport Modeling
Chunmiao Zheng , and Gordon D. Bennett Manufacturer: Wiley-Interscience ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0471384771 |
Book Description
The challenges facing groundwater scientists and engineers today demand expertise in a wide variety of disciplines–geology, hydraulics, geochemistry, geophysics, and biology. As the number of the subdisciplines has increased and as each has become more complex and quantitative, the problem of integrating their concepts and contributions into a coherent overall interpretation has become progressively more difficult. To an increasing degree transport simulation has emerged as an answer to this problem, and the transport model has become a vehicle for integrating the vast amount of field data from a variety of sources and for understanding the relationship of various physical, chemical, and biological processes.Applied Contaminant Transport Modeling is the first resource designed to provide coverage of the discipline’s basic principles, including the theories behind solute transport in groundwater, common numerical techniques for solving transport equations, and step-by-step guidance on the development and use of field-scale modeling. The Second Edition incorporates recent advances in contaminant transport theory and simulation techniques, adding the following to the original text:
-An expanded discussion of the role of aquifer heterogeneity in controlling solute transport
-A new section on the dual-domain mass transfer approach as an alternative to the classical advection-dispersion model
-Additional chemical processes and reactions in the discussion of reactive transport
-A discussion of the TVD (total-variation-diminishing) approach to transport solution
-An entirely new Part III containing two chapters on simulation of flow and transport under variable water density and under variable saturation, respectively, and a third chapter on the use of the simulation-optimization approach in remediation system design
Applied Contaminant Transport Modeling, Second Edition remains the premier reference for practicing hydrogeologists, environmental scientists, engineers, and graduate students in the field. In 1998, in recognition of their work on the first edition, the authors were honored with the John Hem Excellence in Science and Engineering Award of the National Ground Water Association

Case Studies in Mathematical Modelling (Student Mathematical Library, Vol. 27) (Student Mathematical Library)
C. Sean Bohun , Samantha McCollum , and Thea van Roode Manufacturer: American Mathematical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821836501 |
Book Description
Mathematical modelling is a subject without boundaries. It is the means by which mathematics becomes useful to virtually any subject. Moreover, modelling has been and continues to be a driving force for the development of mathematics itself. This book explains the process of modelling real situations to obtain mathematical problems that can be analyzed, thus solving the original problem. The presentation is in the form of case studies, which are developed much as they would be in true applications. In many cases, an initial model is created, then modified along the way. Some cases are familiar, such as the evaluation of an annuity. Others are unique, such as the fascinating situation in which an engineer, armed only with a slide rule, had 24 hours to compute whether a valve would hold when a temporary rock plug was removed from a water tunnel.
Each chapter ends with a set of exercises and some suggestions for class projects. Some projects are extensive, as with the explorations of the predator-prey model; others are more modest.
The text was designed to be suitable for a one-term course for advanced undergraduates. The selection of topics and the style of exposition reflect this choice. The authors have also succeeded in demonstrating just how enjoyable the subject can be.
This is an ideal text for classes on modelling. It can also be used in seminars or as preparation for mathematical modelling competitions.
