    4 out of 5 stars Geometric Tolerancing.......2001-06-30

I bought this book to do some studying on my own. I bought this book because it said it was a workbook and figured I could spend a night or two and get up to speed, but there are no answers in the back, so I am rather disapointed. The text portion is good. It is a lot nicer reading than the official ANSI 14.5 book! I recommend the text portion, but the workbook portion is about useless without the answers. I see in the preface that there is a separately available teachers guide with the answers, so buy that one instead if you aren't in a classroom environment.

            5 out of 5 stars Engineering and Design for today's ANSI/ASME/ISO standards.......2002-04-18

This book describes it all, gives the rules of the road for the changes that have occured in the last number of years in ANSI callouts, Geometric Tolerancing, ASME, and ISO practices. I've been in this business since '76 on the drafting board, and since '86 with CADD (Computer Aided Drafting & Design) and have watched the skills of knowing how to draft (a distinct language of its own) and the elements of design and engineering fall by the wayside in general as the focus now by our educators and companies is more about learning to and running a CADD program, making a picture than following the skills and practices of drafting, design, and engineering. Students today need to get back to "walking" (learning drafting) before they "run" with a CADD program. This book addresses what is necessary to create drawings and design the parts as they should be. I highly recommend it to anyone conscientiously wanting to really learn to do the job right and/or to hone their skills.

3 out of 5 stars Exhaustive theory, but inaccurate exercises.......2001-01-18

As an all-inclusive reference on Drafting theory and practice, this is as good a book as any. However: Having used it as a teaching text, I found an inexcusable number of mistakes in the end-of-chapter exercises. The dimensions simply don't stack up! My advice: Go over them yourself first, time permitting, before assigning them to your classes. Perhaps (hopefully) this has been/will be corrected in later editions. Also: Board drafting is a dying art. Thus, while opening chapters on theory and sketching methods should be retained, more emphasis must now be placed on CAD (not "CADD"); specifically, 3D CAD and downstream processes.

                Book Description

The only book available today that covers military and commercial aircraft landing gear design. It is a comprehensive text that will lead students and engineers from the initial concepts of landing gear design through to final detail design. The book provides a vital link in landing gear design technology from historical practices to modern design trends, and it considers the necessary airfield interface with landing gear design. The text is backed up by calculations, specifications, references, working examples, and nearly 300 illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars This book is essitial if you design landing gear.......2004-04-08

I have been an aerospace for over 25 years and within the last couple of years have been working on landing gear specifically. This book is on every shelf of anyone who has anything to do with landing gear. That is why I purchased it. The small price you pay for this reference bible will be paid for over and over again as you refer to its insights and knowledge contain within its pages. It outlines everything from bushings to complete landing gear system and everything in-between. With the knowledge in this book it will give you an excellent base to start from and an excellent reference for years to come. If I could give it 10 stars I would. You will not be disappointed with your purchase

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Design Guide for Landing Gear.......1998-09-04

Currey addresses almost all of the aspects of landing gear design. From basic gear geometries to dynamic analysis of the shock strut - the descriptions are clear and the illustrations accurate.

With this book alone its possible to design a complete landing gear - well almost. Stress analysis, computer dynamic analysis and manufacturing processes are not covered in great detail in the book, nor should they be.

Currey accurately describes what's involved in the preliminary design stages of landing gear.

                Book Description

Begins with the history of interpreting in Europe and Australia, then looks at how it is done today, and what lies ahead. The different modes of interpretation are explained; there are tips for beginners such as how to overcome stage fright, what to do if you miss something, booth behaviour and microphone manners, how to become a graceful scapegoat, economise your voice and make delegates laugh as well as how to deal with Australianisms. A chapter is devoted to conference organisers, another to protocol and etiquette, after-dinner speeches and press conferences, as well as the duties, responsibilities and ethics of the profession, how to improve your performance, working for radio and television and the special requirements, gravity and complexity of court interpreting and its great rewards. The bodies that make up UN and EU are detailed and the languages they use. Finally a comprehensive bibliography is given with suggestions for further reading.

2 out of 5 stars Useful info hidden by sloppy editing and repetitiveness.......2007-07-08

This should have been a much better book. The author is clearly a highly experienced and competent conference interpreter, but this written guide to her profession was sorely in need of some serious editing before it was put on sale to the public. _Conference Interpreting: Principles and Practice_ is full of typos and repetition (e.g. the same sentence twice on one page, a paragraph repeated verbatim in different chapters), and it's sometimes unnerving how Ms Taylor-Bouladon leaves us hanging with incomplete examples/anecdotes. For example, she stresses the importance of body language, illustrating it by the supposed difference in meaning between a Spaniard pointing to his eye and a Frenchman doing the same thing -- but then fails to tell us what that difference is!

Being an interpreter myself, I found some useful and entertaining information here, but the poor presentation would probably make this book not as interesting to people new to the subject (its main target market). I would recommend that students and beginning interpreters try James Nolan's _Interpretation: Techniques and Exercises_ instead.

                    Product Description

Teaching World Languages for Social Justice: A Sourcebook of Principles and Practices offers principles based on theory, and innovative concepts, approaches, and practices illustrated through concrete examples, for promoting social justice and developing a critical praxis in foreign language classrooms in the U.S. and in wider world language communities. For educators seeking to translate these ideals into classroom practice in an environment dominated by the current standards movement and accountability measures, the critical insights on language education offered in this text will be widely welcomed. The text is designed as a sourcebook for translating theory into practice. Each chapter includes the theoretical base, guidelines for practice, discussion of the relationship to existing practices in the world language classroom, suggestions for activity development (which can be integrated into a professional portfolio), illustrative examples, questions for reflection, and additional suggested readings. Teaching World Languages for Social Justice is a primary or supplementary text for second and foreign language teaching methods courses and is equally appropriate for graduate courses in language education or educational studies.

                                Book Description

As the term "whole language" becomes more widely used, it seems to become less clearly understood. Among whole language educators, there is a concern that this philosophy is in danger of being increasingly misunderstood and misapplied. Moreover, there is concern that this reform movement will be curtailed because practices that are contrary to a holistic philosophy are being promoted in the name of whole language. The aim of this book is to demonstrate that whole language is good education that can help to develop literate citizens and lifelong learners.

Understanding Whole Language is directed toward teachers and teacher educators, and also school administrators. Because classroom teachers have been so active in developing and promoting whole language, many administrators feel left out; they have heard much about holistic, child-centered teaching and the impact it has had upon teachers and children but they may not understand the principles that underlie whole language practices. Professor Weaver stresses that the whole language philosophy can be applied to create educational reform at the school system level, but that this process requires a sustained, long-term effort by all parties involved.
