This book is a tremendous disappointment. Don't be misled by its title, it is NOT a survey of the molecular electronics field. Instead, it's based on the very particular technology and experience of Prof. Tour and his colleagues.

The book's contents are primarily: (a) a very brief commentary on the nanotechnology business, based on Prof. Tour's experience, (b) a description of particular technology of Prof. Tour's start-up, and (c) detailed chemical synthesis protocols for compounds relevant mainly to Prof. Tour's company's technology. Part (c) is by far the longest segment of the book.

I was benchmarking for a possible VC investment in this field around the time this book was written. Prof. Tour's company was among those I looked at (albeit without any direct interaction with the company or Prof. Tour himself). On that basis, I'd suggest that his description of his start-up experience might not be particularly enlightening for others. The fact that it's described in a turgid and pompous style doesn't help, either.

This is one of the greatest scientific monographs ever written. If you are not interested in the material, that's your business, but if you are a quantum chemist or trying to become one, this is the book you must read. This book covers all of the fundamental material in the field using the modern notation and avoids preserving poor presentations of basis topics which have been kept in other books alive for the sake of history. Each of the authors is a master in his craft and they have spent an extraordinary amount of work to make a book which exceeds all reasonable standards for quality. I won't reiterate the contents of the book since the Table of Contents is quite explicit but it's fair to say each chapter is one of the best presentations of its subject available.

The only weakness of this book is that it was meant to be volume one of a two-volume set, but for various reasons, the second volume has never been published. Thus, the authors did not cover their specialty, molecular properties, which is sad given a good book on that topic is missing from the literature. The price is not a weakness because this book is worth every penny of it's list price.

If you want less book for less money, these authors have contributed to the ESQC (European Summer School in Quantum Chemistry) Lecture Notes, which can be obtained from Amazon (an older version) or from Bjorn Roos at Lund University, for less than half of the cost of this book. Some of the introductory material in this book is reproduced there in an essentially identical form.

If you have already studied Szabo's Modern Quantum Chemistry then next step is studying this book.
It is very detailed and goes deep into the electronic structure theory.
It starts with the second quantization and goes on explaining the standard models Hartree-Fock, MCSCF, CI, Coupled-cluster, Moller-Plesset perturbation theory.
This is The Book on electronic structure.
Congratulations to Trygve Helgaker, Poul Jorgensen and Jeppe Olsen for this beautiful exposition of the electronic structure theory.

Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins.......2001-06-04

On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.

Serious Excel 2000 Problem.......2001-04-12

The text book is great. I have many of Winston's other books and they are all great. The Palisade stuff works just fine. However, the StatPro Addin that accompanies this text does not work with MS Excel 2000. I contacted the IT guy that the authors directed me to--he was stumped. He just gave up and suggested I return my book for a refund because he could not figure out it out. Again, the book is great but the StatPro Addin sucks!

I find the text and software a useful set of tools. It assumes familiarity with basic statistics and Excel, and builds on them to develop a powerfull ability to analize data and make decisions from it. I experienced no trouble with the software install or operation.

I have found this book to be very useful with practical examples and case studies. I felt that as an engineer I needed to know how to use software(to save time)along with the formulas that work in it.This book satisfies that, using a very common software EXCEL..what could be better than this.
I strongly recommend this book for a high level course in statistics.

Good for first edition.......2002-05-10

I used this textbook for a course in statistics. I must say that it was better then the first time that I had taken statistics 5 years ago. The book uses one or two data sets per chapter that helps you focus your thoughts while learning the different techniques. A nice feature about this book that wasnt available 5 years ago is the Excel and Minitab examples which saves a lot of time that is ordinarly spent on copious number crunching. I would have given the book 5 stars, however I found some obvious errors in the book that should have been edited out before the release. Good starter book for sats.

I have a large library of math texts from many years in school and I have never read one that was so much fun. This book is really interesting and practical. Finally a statistics book that does more than scare the wit out of somebody. I would highly recommend that more professors choose this book for their students.

Excellent beginner and expert book for Applied Statistics.......2007-02-11

I have used this book in my classroom for the last 3 years and found it very illustrative and simple for students to comprehend statistics. It covers theory with practical examples and therefore keeps it 'real' for students. I have used other books in the past, but students found them theoretical and 'brain show-offs' by authors who really did not care for student comprehensions unless they were math majors. This book is far different and even beginner students can easily relate to the hundreds of practical examples that the author provides.

The Excel examples are easy to follow and my science students usually pick up many practical models from these examples. The regression covered at the beginning level in Chapter 3 is fully covered in multiple regressions in Chapters 17 &18 in a way that makes it easy to teach...

Of the 40-60 stats books I have in my office, this is by far my favorite....
