Good for Beginners...
Beautiful and Useful.......2006-09-22
Architects work with light as one of the basic components of design. Unlike the more technical and morphological aspects of building, light is very difficult to learn and understand without direct experience. Knowledge of the nature and effects of light comes by seeing examples and thinking about them. This book provides the next best thing to being there.
Discussions of light usually tend to the poles of the technical or the mystical. "Designing With Light" approaches it as a medium and discipline. The book provides wonderful examples and also begins a necessary process of categorization to help build a basic 'vocabulary' of light and its behavior. Victoria Meyers is an accomplished architect whose work exhibits a sensitive handling of her topic. I look forward to Volume Two, in which her analytic eye and mind continues the difficult project of making knowledge of this 'ineffable' subject more systematized and communicable.

A Beautiful Design Book.......2006-05-16
Designing with light is a georgeous book. I love the title as well. It has amazing photos and it is stunning to look at. Every page is like a new adventure. It is one of the best design or architecture books I have ever seen. This book makes a beautiful coffee table book that you would love to share with your guests. The author shows a vast knowledge of architecture and the way that light aids in creating sophistication in design. I would highly reccommend this book for any artist's, architect's, designer's or anyone's collection for that matter. Bravo!
An Illuminating Read.......2006-05-10
I saw this book featured in the latest Newsweek special issue "The Good Life" and was intrigued to learn more about "Designing with Light" Kudos to Newsweek for discovering this beautiful and intelligent book. Architect Victoria Meyers (HanrahanMeyers Architects - hMa) has created a delicate balance, so rarely seen; educational content, and beautiful photography of ground breaking architectural work. Meyers takes the reader on a fascinating tour from the science to the history of light and as a tool by the worlds leading architects. I highly recommend this to all architecture enthusiasts, both layman and professional.

Good Review and Teaching Tool.......2007-04-04
This book offers a good review of the basics of stage lighting and design including information about the procedures that go into doing theatre lighting. This book also supplies more current information about projection and automated fixtures. Also, my boyfriend is the lighting designer of the show featured on the cover. Pretty cool. This is a great book and I know of many lighting design students who read it as a required text for their lighting classes in college. This is a good read for people wanting to learn about lighting design as well as refine their skills.

Good text for entry level designers and professionals alike.......1999-05-29
Well worth having in your collection. A good introduction to the art of lighting theatre productions, with good explanations and examples of the design process. Simple information on control systems and basic patching processes but quite useful colour theory chapter. Also covers luminaires and effects projection techniques. All in all a good text.

I purchased a new "used" book with this title, but authored by Wanda Jankowski, ISBN 0-86636-142-1, no print date but a copyright date of 1991. This book gives wonderful ideas for anyone who's just won the Lotto (with Powerball) and needs ideas for decorating and lighting their new multimillion-dollar mansion. It's utterly useless for those of us with more ordinary "how-do-I-light-the-bath" needs. I've tossed the book in the trash. Buyers beware.
Designing With Light: The Creative Touch.......2000-06-27
This is one of my favorite design books. It provides a great variety of different lighting options. Some of the pictures show the same room and how different light affects it. I recommend this to anyone interested in lighting design, or interior design.

The book was written for professionals who care about how people feel in the spaces they design, and focuses on the humanization of architecture. Taking a non-stylistic approach to design, Michel analyzes architecture from the perspective of how the users see their surroundings as they move through space. The reader will learn what pleases and what disturbs people based on how the human visual system responds to color, texture, pattern, and brightness. The book features principles of design for the student and professional, and is generously supported by illustrations and research. Michel unveils a groundbreaking luminance brightness rating system (LBR) and a nine-zone brightness scale to aid designers in previsualizing the appearance of surfacing materials at every stage of the design process, from schematics to development to refinement. Masterpiece of using Light in Architecture.......2007-04-05
Lighting has as much or more about how we feel towards a building, area, or room as anything else. In fact, we do not see a wall or a painting, we see the light coming from it. If that light is too bright, too dim, or the wrong color we see something different than we do under other circumstances.
This book is an explanation of what we see in things. It begins with how the eye works, how it changes with age and goes on to the nature of light, texture and spatial depth. From here he moves into the architectural area. First he talks about the different ways we percieve the things we see. Then he goes on to the Luminance Brightness Rating that gives a numerical relationship that allows for the comparison of different surfaces and other technical aspects of using light in architectural areas.
I would rank this as an intermediate level book aimed at the working architect or the advanced student.

"Although many of the works in this superb publication appeared at the time in the Illustrated London News, for most readers this will be their first opportunity to see them in colour. Indeed, several of the sketches have never before been published in their original form - notably William Simpson's drawing of Prince Alemayehou, which was executed only a few days after the death of his father, the Emperor Tewedros, and of whom very few images have been handed down to us. Readers are also treated to a number of fascinating tidbits, such as the methods practiced by publishers' studio staff to enhance landscape sketches with the addition of human figures, and many will be intrigued to learn of the `cut and paste' origins of the graphic cover used to illustrate John Pridham's musical composition commemorating the battle.
Professors Pankhurst and Northrup are to be congratulated not only for a succinct and readable presentation of the historical background, but for their insight into the relationship between Ethiopia and the outside world prevailing in the mid-19th century. Whereas previous writers have tended to portray events leading up to the `Abyssinian difficulty' through European eyes; the reader can now begin to see them in the Ethiopian context. It is a sad irony that it is only in the 21st century that we begin to see that Tewedros's cultural values had more in common with the pre-Renaissance world of Prester John than with post-industrial revolution Britain. Clearly the British government's outrage at the imprisonment of its consul, and Napier's subsequent refusal to accept anything less than total surrender - even after the release of the prisoners - would not have been anticipated or even understood by an essentially mediæval monarch.
