Book Description
Rutgers University, from 1958 to 1972, was at the center of many new developments in the art world. Artists connected with Happenings and Fluxus created works that had a major impact in New York and abroad. A dozen years after Allan Kaprow's first Happening on Rutgers University's Douglass campus in 1958, George Maciunas (Mr. Fluxus) created his major late composition, Flux-Mass, in the same space, and Hermann Nitsch, the Viennese Actionist, presented his controversial Orgies-Mysteries-Theater. These radical shifts in art paralleled calls to rethink attitudes about race, sex, gender, and war during turbulent times in America's history.
Critical Mass chronicles this ephemeral work on the Rutgers campus and in New York City, and the innovations that grew from Bob Watts, Allan Kaprow, and George Brecht's "Project in Multiple Dimensions." With texts and performance scores by artiststogether with numerous photographs of the events and essays by art historians and critics Hannah Higgins, Jill Johnston, Susan Ryan, and Kristine StilesCritical Mass presents a vivid picture of this dynamic moment.
This volume is a companion to an exhibit at the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts, and at the Mason Gross Art Galleries at Rutgers University.
Book Description
Explores the roots and fruits of this radical art movement.
Here Emmett Williams turns cartoonist, in the footsteps of Lyonel Feininger, Rube Goldberg, and Ad Reinhardt. His pseudo-historical collage-drawings, digitally remastered by Ann Noel for this edition, are peopled with often-irreverent images of his real-life friends and colleagues. Williams, the oldest living member of Fluxus, assumes the role of know-it-all ringmaster in a three-ring circus that highlights the fanciful antics of the stars of Fluxus, Happenings, and Performance Art: George Maciunas, John Cage, Claes Oldenburg, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Joseph Beuys, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and Williams and Noel themselves.
On the left-hand pages, opposite each cartoon, are documents from the author's personal archives relating some of the amusing and unexpected things that really happened in Fluxus events over the years. 140 color illustrations.
Book Description
George Maciunas was the founding member and leader of the most radical and experimental art movement of the 1960s, Fluxus. Its members rejected the traditional systems of high art, practicing an extraordinary form of anti-art that encompassed everything from photography and pavement art to poetry and drama. Mr. Fluxus, the first biography of this key figure in twentieth- century art, reveals the story of an unorthodox, contradictory, and elusive genius. Maciunas attempted to rule Fluxus in totalitarian fashion, yet he laughed at himself and provoked others to laughter, poking fun at the incurable illnesses and painful realities that afflicted him throughout his relatively short life. What emerges from this collection of anecdotes and impressions, coaxed from many of his former Fluxus colleagues and from an array of friends and enemies, is an informative portrait of an inspiring crusader whose mission was to change the world, beginning with the world of art.
Customer Reviews:
A definitive depiction of the life and times of G. Maciunas.......1999-08-14
Emmett William's Mr Fluxus is a collective portrait of the founder of the Fluxus group. Maciunas was a typographer, visual designer, teacher and organizer. He was a constant source of ideas, and worked tirelessly to produce them. At various times now famous artists such as Beuyes, Ono and Paik joined a loose band of others. They participated in FluxFests, produced FluxGames and objects and sold them in FluxShops. His FluxHouses were among the seeds of today's SOHO. Among the ironies of his life , is that many of his ideas have led to financial success for others, while he lived a spartan life and suffered financial disasters. The book is a collective of anonymous quotes as Fluxus was a collective. The quotes are attributed at the end, but the form si sometimes confusing. Williams and Ay-O have produced a valuable document for scholars and art lovers. They had the advantage of being insiders with access to many who might not choose to cooperate, and to know many others who might be too obscure. They also spoke to artists while they were still alive about Fluxus. Al Hansen, Dick Higgins, Peter Moore and Dieter Roth are no longer available to us. The book presents George Maciunas in all of his complexity. Fluxus has had a role in the genesis of Performance art and Conceptual art. This book will help us remember him in his context.

A Flexible History of Fluxus Facts & Fictions
ASIN: 0520228677 |
Book Description
In this groundbreaking work of incisive scholarship and analysis, Hannah Higgins explores the influential art movement Fluxus. Daring, disparate, contentious--Fluxus artists worked with minimal and prosaic materials now familiar in post-World War II art. Higgins describes the experience of Fluxus for viewers, even experiences resembling sensory assaults, as affirming transactions between self and world.
Fluxus began in the 1950s with artists from around the world who favored no single style or medium but displayed an inclination to experiment. Two formats are unique to Fluxus: a type of performance art called the Event, and the Fluxkit multiple, a collection of everyday objects or inexpensive printed cards collected in a box that viewers explore privately. Higgins examines these two setups to bring to life the Fluxus experience, how it works, and how and why it's important. She does so by moving out from the art itself in what she describes as a series of concentric circles: to the artists who create Fluxus, to the creative movements related to Fluxus (and critics' and curators' perceptions and reception of them), to the lessons of Fluxus art for pedagogy in general.
Although it was commonly associated with political and cultural activism in the 1960s, Fluxus struggled against being pigeonholed in these too-prescriptive and narrow terms. Higgins, the daughter of the Fluxus artists Alison Knowles and Dick Higgins, makes the most of her personal connection to the movement by sharing her firsthand experience, bringing an astounding immediacy to her writing and a palpable commitment to shedding light on what Fluxus is and why it matters.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Experience.......2007-01-08
This book is probably the best "first resource" for learning about, and understanding Fluxus. Hannah Higgins had the unique experience of growing up as the daughter of two Fluxus luminaries, Dick Higgins and Allison Knowles. But in addition to having the advantage of a front row seat to the Fluxus experience, she has also written a thoughtful and well-researched book. The book contains some nice illustrations, and has a very readable, flowing narrative. While the writing style is not overly academic, it is also not a "coffee table" or picture book, and readers not used to college level language may find it difficult.
The Fluxus Experience gives George Maciunas due respect as a founder of Fluxus, and as the man who gave Fluxus its name - but Hannah's unique perspective gives much more credit (deservedly) to artists like Dick Higgins who continued to keep Fluxus vibrant and alive after Maciuanas died in 1978.
I would recommend this book to anybody interested in learning more about what Fluxus was, what Fluxus contributed to the world's creative culture, and how Fluxus continues to influence artists around the world today.
Now Fluxus Makes Sense.......2003-06-11
Finally, Fluxus makes sense and takes its rightful place as a tremendously important avant-garde movement with huge influence on art, artists and art history. Higgins makes a complex theoretical argument easy to grasp for the informed reader. I bounced from and moved through "Ah ha's" to "I didn't know that was Fluxus" to "I didn't know he/she was Fluxus" to "I get it now." The influence of Fluxus is now everywhere I look.

"Coffee cups can be more beautiful than fancy sculptures".......2000-06-19
"Long long ago, back when the world was young-that is, sometime around 1958- a lot of artists and composers and other people who wanted to do beautiful things began to look at the world around them in a new way (for them)." In the spirit of Fluxus is a great starting point for exploring a time when Art still occurred in movements. Fluxus was an exciting, and for some, a confusing period that looked at the objects in front of them as Art objects and asked why isn't it Art, why isn't this music? It exclaimed that the sound of one's shoe tapping on the surface of a puddle makes beautiful music that people take for granted and overlook.
This book provides a complete picture of a generation of creating that forever changed the face of Art, and the way one views Art. Packed with full size pictures of performance stills, reproductions of actual printed pieces that were freely handed out like flyers and Art exibition photos, it sucked me in and actually made me look around and really see. It is a well written book that is easily accessible and an enjoyable read.
Book Description
A biography of this leading member of the Fluxus movement.
George Maciunas (1931-1978) established strangely radical modes of presentation in the name of Fluxus. In his view the bulk of the conventional art businessmuseums, theaters, concert halls, opera houses, and publishersshould cease to exist. Traditional works of art were to be replaced by Fluxus. Art was to be so uncomplicated that it could be realized by anyone, anywhere. New pieces would have their copyrights protected and would be available for the price of a paperback.
Maciunas was a staunch opponent of personal enrichment and came up with spartan solutions for almost every life situation. Despite his tireless efforts, he never achieved his ultimate goal, and he died impoverished and in miserable circumstances. 100 duotone illustrations.
Book Description
Avant-Garde Performance and the Limits of Criticism looks at the American avant-garde during the Cold War period, focusing on the interrelated questions of performance practices, cultural resistance, and the politics of criticism and scholarship in the U.S. counterculture. It develops three case studies: the Living Theatre's influential production of Jack Gelber's The Connection, which subverted the historical and political assumptions of the War on Drugs, utilized cutting-edge jazz both formally and thematically, and inspired a generation of artists and activists to rethink the nature of community and communication; the earliest American performance art, namely the Happenings and Fluxus events, which responded in astounding ways to the avaricious movements of Cold War capitalism; and the Black Arts Movement, which brought about practical and theoretical innovations that effectively evade the conceptual categories of Euro-American philosophy and historiography.
Mike Sell's study is groundbreaking in its consideration of the avant-garde in relationship to a crucial but rarely considered agent: the scholar and critic. The book examines the role of the scholar and critic in the cultural struggles of radical artists and activists and reveals how avant-garde performance identifies the very limits of critical consideration. The book also explores the popularization of the avant-garde: how formerly subversive art is eventually discovered by the mass media, is gobbled up by the marketplace, and eventually finds its way onto the syllabi of college and university courses. Avant-Garde Performance and the Limits of Criticism is a timely and significant book that will become a standard reference for scholars in the fields of avant-garde literary criticism, theater history, critical theory, and performance studies.
"A provocative exploration of relations between the historical avant-garde and Cold War vanguard art and theatre. Sell's compelling historical and cultural narrative shows how the connections between the two exist at a very deep level of radical politics and aesthetics--an amazing concoction of rigorous scholarship, interdisciplinary learning, and progressive theorizing."
--Michael Vanden Heuvel, University of Wisconsin, Madison
"One of the most sophisticated, engaged, and engaging studies of the avant-garde in the United States that I've read-an important study that will raise the bar not only on scholarship of the Black Arts Movement, but on U.S. avant-gardism generally."
--James Smethurst, University of Massachusetts

An Excellent In-Depth Look at Fluxus.......2007-01-08
This book is a "must read" for the serious student of Fluxus. Owen Smith covers the difficult-to-define Fluxus movement with aplomb in this volume. Smith's effort has resulted in a work that gives a clear and mostly complimentary illumination to Fluxus without any overt biases or "axes to grind".
Smith's definition of Fluxus as an attitude, and his elaboration of that attitude within its pages, seems to be close to the perfect description of what Fluxus was and is.
By defining Fluxus as an attitude Owen Smith was able to get around the thorny issue of whether Fluxus died with George Maciunas, or continued on with artists like Dick Higgins and Ken Freidman through the 1990s - or for that matter whether Fluxus is alive and thriving "under the radar" to this day. Fluxus as an attitude is much tidier concept than Fluxus as a "movement" tied to a specific time, or as close-knit group of artists, or as some kind of formal/stylistic approach to art.
While this book is a necessary addition to the library of the seriously interested, it may not be the best introductory volume for the uninitiated, as it is quite detailed and dense with data. But I loved it, and if you are "into Fluxus" you probably will too.

WORKS OF TIMELESS VALUES AND TOLERANCE.......2004-02-28
Perhaps more than any other contemporary artist Norman Rockwell enjoys popular mass appeal with his warm scenes of Americana. His Saturday Evening Post covers, which he created for more than four decades, enchanted a generation, as he painted his particular visions of daily life.
His work bespeaks timeless values and tolerance, so much so that one of his ads was borrowed by an AIDS activist group to promote safe-sex awareness. What would Rockwell himself have thought of this? His son, Tom, said, "One of the things my father was associated with was tolerance. So I think it's fairly easy to know what he would have said."
Norman Rockwell by Montgomery.......2004-01-23
The work shows important illustrations for the Saturday Evening
Post, his wedding and the Art Director's Club. Famous illustrations; such as, the New Tavern Sign are depicted. An
illustration of "A Family Tree" is presented in full color
together with other famous renditions of the artist. The Spirit
of Education and the Airplane Trip are presented in full color.
These were famous presentations in the Saturday Evening Post of
the 1930s. There is a famous Christmas illustration from 1929
and the "Dreams of Chivalry". The famous "Golden Rule" is
presented together with "The Prom Dress" and "The Outing".
This is an important work for ownership by anyone interested
in the modern artwork of the previous century.
Intersting, fascinating and joyful........2000-05-03
I thought this book of Norman Rockwell's work was a fascinatining look into the typical/almost idealistic life of everyday embarrassing/comical/poignant situations which do commonly occur. The picture I enjoyed the most was "The Gossips" where upon I could imagine the tale behind the laughter and enjoy looking at the different facial expressions and that there was such a great twist to the tale. Thank you for such a great book!.
Small, but packed, well written. Defines and defends........1999-06-14
The book is small, but the illustrations still are reproduced extremely well. The essay alone is worth every penny. If you feel uneasy about your love for the work of Norman Rockwell, this book will give you the courage to like what you really like, without any more appologies. Buy it, read it, enjoy. You will, I guarantee.
