Book Description
With its fittingly dramatic design, Courbet and the Modern Landscape accompanies the first major museum exhibition specifically to address Gustave Courbet's extraordinary achievement in landscape painting. Many of these carefully selected works produced from 1855 to 1876--gathered from Asia,
Europe, and North America--will be new to readers.
The catalogue--which accompanies an exhibition at the Getty Museum to be held from February 21 to May 14, 2006--highlights the artist's expressive responses to the natural environment. Essays by the curators examine Courbet's distinctly modern practice of landscape painting. Mary Morton's essay
situates his landscapes in relation to his work in other genres, his critical reputation, and his role in establishing a new pictorial language for landscape painting. Charlotte Eyerman's essay investigates how later generations of nineteenth- and twentieth-century artists responded to Courbet's
example. The catalogue also includes an essay by Dominique de Font-Reaulx, curator of photographs at the Musee d'Orsay, on the relationship between Courbet's work and landscape photography of the 1850s and 1860s.

Book Description
"'This book,' Michael Fried's work opens, 'was written not so much chapter by chapter as painting by painting over a span of roughly ten years.' Courbet's Realism is a magnificent work and its very first sentence brings us up against the qualities of mind of its author, qualities that make it as impressive as it is. It allows us to reconstruct the keen eye, the commitment to perception, the gift of rapt concentration, the conviction that great paintings are not necessarily understood easily, and the further conviction that a great painter deserves to get from us as good as he gives. By drawing on these qualities, Fried achieves something out of reach for all but a handful of his colleagues. In his writing, art history takes on some of the character of art itself. It is driven by the same stubborn resolve to open our eyes."—Richard Wollheim, San Francisco Review of Books
Courbet's Realism is clearly a major contribution to the highly active field of Courbet studies. . . . But to contribute here and now is necessarily also to contribute to central debates about art history itself, and so the book is also—I hesitate to say 'more importantly,' because of the way object and method are woven together in it—a major contribution to current attempts to rethink the foundations and objects of art history. . . . It will not be an easy book to come to terms with; for all its engagement with contemporary literary theory and related developments, it is not an application of anything, and its deeply thought-through arguments will not fall easily in line with the emerging shapes of the various 'new art histories' that tap many of the same theoretical resources. At this moment, there may be nothing more valuable than such a work."—Stephen Melville, Art History
Book Description
Unsentimental realism
"I maintain," stated Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), "that painting is clearly a concrete art whose existence lies only in the representation of real and existing objects...." Courbet, who influenced and advised the fledgling Impressionists, was an outstanding representative of a naturalistic realism that highlights the contradictions and inequities in society. Revolutionary were Courbet's style, with dark hues and heavy brushstrokes, and choice of subjectdepictions the life of plain people treated in an unsentimental, down to earth manner. His influence was enormous during his lifetime; he was offered the cross of the Legion of Honor in 1872 but he refused it. A man always at odds with authority, be it artistic or political, Courbet became a member of the Paris Commune and was briefly imprisoned and forced to flee to Switzerland for the final years of his life.

I got this book out at a libray for a school report. I had it last minute and this book really saved me. It's got just about every aspect of Gustave Courbet's life explained in plain English. A great resource for a student or a teacher. A must buy for an art buff.

Great Ideas! .......2006-03-19
I teach 4th and 5th grade art, and on a very tight budget none the less. This book has wonderful ideas that I can either add to or shorten depending on my class level. It has given me great ideas and I am looking forward to trying more.
The Usbourne Book of Art Skills.......2005-06-10
An excellent, well explained art book, with beautiful and easy to follow illustrations. The book is a treasure chest of ideas suitable for the primary classroom. This book provides plenty of opportunities to explore the various strands of the visual arts field. A great resource for any teacher, parent or doting aunt.

Definitely for BEGINNERS............2001-12-25
I bought this book in order to find "new" and "unique" braids for my daughters hair. I was disappointed when it arrived. It really only contains instructions for common braids that I assume most are familiar with. I suppose my expectations were too high. This would be a good choice for someone who has never braided. The instructions are easy to understand, the photos are clear and detailed. If you are already familiar with a simple 3 strand braid and a french braid, don't bother purchasing this book. The other braids are just simple variations of the above mentioned.
Bad Book.......2001-06-11
This book said it would teach me everything I needed to knowabout hair braiding. Boy, was I wrong? Thanks to this ... book my sister (the one whose hair I braided following the instructions in this book) now has horrible knots in her hair that won't come out. Tomorrow mom is taking her to the salon so they can cut them all out. My sis's hair is going to have to be cut like all short. Thanks ... person for making me feel bad about ruining my sis's hair because you wrote [this]... book!!!
A Great Little Book.......1999-09-19
This is a great little book either for kids, or for kids and their moms, who want to try some new things with their hair. The book is loaded with photos and simple, clear instructional diagrams (all in color), which makes it GREAT for beginners. Most of the styles are fairly simple, but there are a couple that are more challenging, one which even reccomends an extra person to help hold some of the hair! The styles included are: Simple Braids, "Hippie" Braids (which incorporate embroidery floss), The Top Knot, Knotted Bunches, simple braids incorporating cords and ribbons, Princess Styles, Crossover Braids, Six Braids, Flipovers, Braids for shorter hair, Mini Braids, French Braids (both standard and "inside-out"), Crown braiding, The Five-strand Braid (very cool, I thought), The Rope Braid, and last, The Fishtail Braids (The single being exceptionally attractive). This book is perfect for people who are just getting started with styling hair.

Customer Reviews:
great for beginners.......2006-08-17
I love this book! The age range says it's for 4 to 8 year olds, but if your new to ballet it's helpful no matter how old you are. I'm 18 and kind of new to ballet and think it's one of the best ballet books I've read, even if it is a little short. It gives you an idea of what to expect at a class and the exercises are simple enough to do at home using a chair as a barre. My favouries are the battlement glisses and battlement tendus. The glisses really help to strenghten your legs and the tendus help to strengthen your arches.
ALWAYS supervise younger children! This is especially true when they are practicing arabesques and attitudes as these moves, unlike tendus, plies, and glisses, are harder to master. Also, anything on demi - pointe should be supervised as well since feet have a habit of curling in (like bananas). REMEMBER bad habits form fast! They are also hard to break. However, when you are confident that the child(ren) can perform the exercises properly on their own there is little need to continue to supervise as closely. While having a leotard is great no special equiptment is neccessary, but I personally recommend a hard flat floor(preferably wood, but tile or linolium will work, too) and wearing ballet slippers while performing these exercises - especially during the glisses and tendus - OUCH! I wear Bloch Dansofts because I like the full sole as it seems to make you work a little harder to arch your foot and it feels more like a pointe shoe, but any ballet slipper - full sole or the more common split sole - will work. Besides, they're pretty cheap and it sure beats killing your foot on the floor.
