Power Spectral Density is widespread used in electronic engineering books as the Fourier Transform of correlation functions. However this definition seems rather mysterious and not very well connected with the intuitive idea of power, specially for stochastic processes.

This books gives the definitions, proofs and motivations behind Power Spectral Density. It rigorously establishes the bridge between "engineers intuitive concepts" and mathematical laid-down definitions.

Although it introduces Lebesgue and measure theory, the first chapters of the book are not intended to mathematicians, so it only deals with those fundamental results which will be needed further in the book. In following chapters one readily get a great insight into the concepts and connections between those split worlds of engineering and mathematics. The exposition is clear even in the case of stochastic processes, where the Power Spectral Density is clearly definded as a statistical average power.

For those engineers aware of the gaps and flaws of engineering books and who can't turn a blind eye to mathematics, this is a must have book.

Spectral Analysis and Its Applications is an excellent source for professionals with intermediate time-series statistics skills. It clearly outlines and demonstrates the methods necessary to carry out sound spectral analysis of time-series data and how to use this data for modelling purposes. It is also a great aid and reference for anyone who needs the means to triumph over inexperience and under-education in time-series debates. Four years out of graduate school, I need this book again; I wish I'd bought it sooner.

            Book Description

In order to study discrete Abelian groups with wide range applications, the use of classical functional equations, difference and differential equations, polynomial ideals, digital filtering and polynomial hypergroups is required. This book covers several different problems in this field and is unique in being the only comprehensive coverage of this topic. It should appeal to graduate students and researchers in harmonic analysis, spectral analysis, functional equations and hypergroups.

              Book Description

Graph theory is an important branch of contemporary combinatorial mathematics. By describing recent results in algebraic graph theory and demonstrating how linear algebra can be used to tackle graph-theoretical problems, the authors provide new techniques for specialists in graph theory. The book explains how the spectral theory of finite graphs can be strengthened by exploiting properties of the eigenspaces of adjacency matrices associated with a graph. The extension of spectral techniques proceeds at three levels: using eigenvectors associated with an arbitrary labeling of graph vertices, using geometrical invariants of eigenspaces such as graph angles and main angles, and introducing certain kinds of canonical eigenvectors by means of star partitions and star bases. Current research on these topics is part of a wider effort to forge closer links between algebra and combinatorics. Problems of graph reconstruction and identification are used to illustrate the importance of graph angles and star partitions in relation to graph structure. Specialists in graph theory will welcome this treatment of important new research.

                Book Description

This book presents limit theorems for nonlinear functionals of random fields with singular spectrum on the basis of various asymptotic expansions. The first chapter treats basic concepts of the spectral theory of random fields, some important examples of random processes and fields with singular spectrum, and Tauberian and Abelian theorems for covariance function of long-memory random fields. Chapter 2 is devoted to limit theorems for spherical averages of nonlinear transformations of Gaussian and chi-square random fields. Chapter 3 summarises some limit theorems for geometric type functionals of random fields. Limit theorems for the solutions of Burgers' equation with random data via parabolic and hyperbolic rescaling are demonstrated in Chapter 4. Lastly, Chapter 5 deals with some problems for statistical analysis of random fields with singular spectrum. Audience: This book will be of interest to mathematicians who use random fields in engineering or other applications.

                  Book Description

This work presents some classical as well as some very recent results and techniques concerning the spectral geometry corresponding to the Laplace-Beltrami operator and the Hodge-de Rham operators.
It treats many topics that are not usually dealt with in this field, such as the continuous dependence of the eigenvalues with respect to the Riemannian metric in the CINFINITY-topology, and some of their consequences, such as Uhlenbeck's genericity theorem; examples of non-isometric flat tori in all dimensions greater than or equal to four; Gordon's classical technique for constructing isospectral closed Riemannian manifolds; a detailed presentation of Sunada's technique and Pesce's approach to isospectrality; Gordon and Webb's example of non-isometric convex domains in R n ( n>=4) that are isospectral for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions; the Chanillo-Trèves estimate for the first positive eigenvalue of the Hodge-de Rham operator, etc. Significant applications are developed, and many open problems, references and suggestions for further reading are given. Several themes for additional research are pointed out.
Audience: This volume is designed as an introductory text for mathematicians and physicists interested in global analysis, analysis on manifolds, differential geometry, linear and multilinear algebra, and matrix theory. It is accessible to readers whose background includes basic Riemannian geometry and functional analysis. These mathematical prerequisites are covered in the first two chapters, thus making the book largely self-contained.

                    Book Description

This text constitutes a revised edition of the book published in French by the `Presses Polytechniques et Universitaires Romandes' in 1991. It contains a comprehensive treatment of the theory of random vibration of linear structures subjected to stationary or nonstationary excitations.
The book consists of three parts: Chapters 1 to 4 review the theory of random processes; Chapters 5 and 6 analyse the response of linear structures to various classes of random excitations. Illustrative examples are taken from various fields of structural engineering, such as boundary layer noise, along wind response of buildings or the seismic response of multi-supported structures. The spectral description of nonstationary oscillatory processes and the response of linear structures to nonstationary excitation are treated in Chapter 8. The third part is devoted to the failure modes by threshold crossing and random fatigue; classical results for fatigue under uniaxial loading are extended to biaxial stress fields. The final chapter is devoted to the discrete Fourier transform.
This book will interest structural analysts and research engineers dealing with structures in a random environment. It can also be used as a textbook for a graduate course in random vibration. The text is supplemented by 81 problems.

                      Book Description

This volume deals with structure theorems and models for finite and countable families of self-adjoint operators which satisfy commutative, noncommutative, Lie and more general relations. Such families are studied because of their relation to mathematical models of quantum systems in theoretical physics, representation theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras, (in particular, `large' Lie algebras), and representation of infinitesimal objects of these supergroups and superalgebras. The methods employed are those of commutative and noncommutative probability theory. For mathematicians and physicists whose work involves spectral theory, Lie algebras and probability theory. The book will also be of use to those interested in mathematical models of quantum systems.
