    Book Description

Chiral Chromatography Thomas E. Beesley Advanced Separation Technologies Inc., Whippany, New Jersey, USA Raymond P. W. Scott Chemistry Department, Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA and Chemistry Department, Birkbeck College, University of London, UK Analytical techniques based on separation processes, such as chromatography and electrophoresis, are finding a growing range of applications in chemical, pharmaceutical and clinical laboratories. The Wiley Separation Science Series provides the analyst in these laboratories with well-focused books covering individual techniques, so that they can be applied more efficiently and effectively to contemporary analytical problems. The different enantiomers of a drug can exhibit widely different physiological activity in degree and nature. As a result, the separation and identification of enantiomers is now a very important analytical problem and chiral chromatography is the natural technique to apply to the resolution of such mixtures. Chiral Chromatography provides the reader with a basic understanding of the nature of chromatographic separations and relates the principles specifically to the separation of enantiomers. The following information is included:
    * chiral separations involving both gas and liquid chromatography
    * descriptions of the apparatus used for both techniques
    * detailed discussion on the retention mechanism that results in chiral selectivity
    * the structure and synthesis of a wide range of chirally active stationary phases used in both gas and liquid chromatography
    * preparative applications for large scale purification of enantiomers
    * applications of capillary electrophoresis and capillary electrochromatography.
In addition to the above, a large number of examples of the separation of both commercially and physiologically interesting chiral mixtures are given, as is a detailed discussion on the mechanism of selectivity of each example. Thomas Beesley was founder and is the CEO for a leading manufacturer of chiral stationary phases and has published papers on TLC, HPLC and chiral separations involving cyclodextrins. He has also coauthored papers with Daniel W. Armstrong, an expert on modern cyclodextrin columns. Raymond Scott has worked in the field of separation science for over 40 years and has contributed extensively to the development of both gas and liquid chromatography publishing over 160 papers on the subjects.

                      Book Description

The geometry of curves has fascinated mathematicians for 2500 years, and the theory has become highly abstract. Recently links have been made with the subject of error correction, leading to the creation of geometric Goppa codes, a new and important area of coding theory. This book is an updated and extended version of the last part of the successful book Error-Correcting Codes and Finite Fields. It provides an elementary introduction to Goppa codes, and includes many examples, calculations, and applications. The book is in two parts with an emphasis on motivation, and applications of the theory take precedence over proofs of theorems. The formal theory is, however, provided in the second part of the book, and several of the concepts and proofs have been simplified without sacrificing rigour.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Goppa Codes.......2000-05-07

This is the best book I've seen explaining Goppa codes and their mathematical background. The explanation of algebraic curves is much easier to follow than the other two books I know of on this topic, "Algebraic Function Fields and Codes" by Stichtenoth and "Algebraic Curves over Finite Fields" by Moreno. In fact, even if you aren't especially interested in Goppa codes, this would be a good book from which to learn the basics of algebraic curves.

The book has one of the few treatments of algebraic curves that explains them first concretely as zeros of a polynomial f(x,y), and then more abstractly as a function field, a finite extension of K(x).

                        Book Description

Algebraic geometry is often employed to encode and decode signals transmitted in communication systems. This book describes the fundamental principles of algebraic coding theory from the perspective of an engineer, discussing a number of applications in communications and signal processing. The principal concept is that of using algebraic curves over finite fields to construct error-correcting codes. The most recent developments are presented including the theory of codes on curves, without the use of detailed mathematics, substituting the intense theory of algebraic geometry with Fourier transform where possible. The author describes the codes and corresponding decoding algorithms in a manner that allows the reader to evaluate these codes against practical applications, or to help with the design of encoders and decoders. This book is relevant to practicing communication engineers and those involved in the design of new communication systems, as well as graduate students and researchers in electrical engineering.

                        Book Description

In this tract, Professor Moreno develops the theory of algebraic curves over finite fields, their zeta and L-functions, and, for the first time, the theory of algebraic geometric Goppa codes on algebraic curves. Among the applications considered are: the problem of counting the number of solutions of equations over finite fields; Bombieri's proof of the Reimann hypothesis for function fields, with consequences for the estimation of exponential sums in one variable; Goppa's theory of error-correcting codes constructed from linear systems on algebraic curves; there is also a new proof of the TsfasmanSHVladutSHZink theorem. The prerequisites needed to follow this book are few, and it can be used for graduate courses for mathematics students. Electrical engineers who need to understand the modern developments in the theory of error-correcting codes will also benefit from studying this work.

                        Hi,

I tried to read this book as I wanted to understand Bombieri's
proof of Weil's Theorem (Reimann hypothesis for function fields over
                        finite field)
For me this this book was very hard to read- I spent alot of time trying to
understand the first chapter-and did not get far.
The book is far from self contained and contains some errors
I think that this is far from inevitable- as there
are books who explain Bombieri's proof- the new vesion of
Schmidt's book equations over finite fields, and I think Stichentoff's
book algberaic function fields and codes- that are much more
                        accesible

Maybe this book has advantages that I currently cannot
appreciate- but If you're in a situation like mine-someone
that has undergraduate and partial graduate knowledge of
math , and you want to understand Bombieri's proof
and some concepts from function fields and algebraic geometry
                        - I recommend you look elsewhere

4 out of 5 stars Informative, oddly organized.......2001-10-28

This is really two booklets put together, one for mathematicians and one for computer scientists or electrical engineers, with the more accessible one put second. Throughout, the method is very algebraic, as opposed to geometrical. The author explains that he wants to require as little geometry as possible. And this book assumes you have your own motivation for the material. So it gives few examples or explanations until after the theorems are proved. Probably the best source for introductory examples and geometric motivation for Zeta functions on finite fields is chapters 7, 10, and 11 of Ireland and Rosen's CLASSICAL INTRODUCTION TO MODERN NUMBER THEORY.

Moreno's chapters 1-4 aim at math grad students. Chapters 1-3 prove the Riemann-Roch theorem for curves on finite fields, and then use it to give Bombieri's proof of the Riemann Hypothesis for those curves. The treatment is on the level of Hartshorne's ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY and often refers to that book for an alternative account. But Moreno's book is just on dimension one, and only over finite fields. So he proves the Riemann Hypothesis for this case by page 69, while Hartshorne gives the proof as an exercise on page 368. Ireland and Rosen prove only some special cases, notably the case of elliptic curves on their page 302.

Chapter 4 continues the first three, with a very long and attractive discussion of L functions and exponential sums on these curves, with applications in number theory. I have not learned this material yet but I'll tell you this is the most encouraging treatment of it I have seen.

Chapter 5, which is over one third of the book, does not assume the earlier chapters. It aims at computer scientists interested in the theoretical limits on efficiency of Goppa codes and practical ways to approach those limits. Here are much more elementary explanations of the methods used in earlier chapters. It explains the "birational" viewpoint where a curve is studied by way of the field of rational functions on it, and in fact that field takes on a life of its own. The original curve is forgotten and "points" are defined to be "discrete valuation rings" of any function field. Moreno explains how, in clear cases, these correspond to the points of geometrical curves. But, as a key example, "points" at infinity are automatically included on this approach, even if you do not include them in the geometric curves. He explains what the Riemann-Roch theorem actually says about curves. This chapter does not give complete proofs, and indeed it cites other books for the proof of at least one theorem that was already proved in chapter 1.

You can learn a lot from this book but you'll have to dig for it.

                        Book Description

This book has two objectives. The first is to fill a void in the existing mathematical literature by providing a modern, self-contained and in-depth exposition of the theory of algebraic function fields. Topics include the Riemann-Roch theorem, algebraic extensions of function fields, ramifications theory and differentials. Particular emphasis is placed on function fields over a finite constant field, leading into zeta functions and the Hasse-Weil theorem. Numerous examples illustrate the general theory. Error-correcting codes are in widespread use for the reliable transmission of information. Perhaps the most fascinating of all the ties that link the theory of these codes to mathematics is the construction by V.D. Goppa, of powerful codes using techniques borrowed from algebraic geometry. Algebraic function fields provide the most elementary approach to Goppa's ideas, and the second objective of this book is to provide an introduction to Goppa's algebraic-geometric codes along these lines. The codes, their parameters and links with traditional codes such as classical Goppa, Peed-Solomon and BCH codes are treated at an early stage of the book. Subsequent chapters include a decoding algorithm for these codes as well as a discussion of their subfield subcodes and trace codes. Stichtenoth's book will be very useful to students and researchers in algebraic geometry and coding theory and to computer scientists and engineers interested in information transmission.

5 out of 5 stars an introduction to Goppa codes.......2003-08-22

Coding theory is fundamental to make digital transmission technology work efficiently and usually uses Reed-Solomon codes. The "natural" extension of those codes is to consider riemann surfaces over finite fields.

The theory is developped from scratch and does not assume any knowledge of algebraic geometry. The author gave a proof of the Hasse-Weil bounds using the Zeta function. In parallel the theory of linear codes and Goppa codes is introduced from the beginning.

While the author do not consider the geometry of riemann surfaces, having a knowledge of riemann surfaces over C can help a lot.
This short book should be considered as a very nice introduction to geometric goppa codes.

                            Book Description

When information is transmitted, errors are likely to occur. This problem has become increasingly important as tremendous amounts of information are transferred electronically every day. Coding theory examines efficient ways of packaging data so that these errors can be detected, or even corrected.

The traditional tools of coding theory have come from combinatorics and group theory. Since the work of Goppa in the late 1970s, however, coding theorists have added techniques from algebraic geometry to their toolboxes. In particular, by re-interpreting the Reed-Solomon codes as coming from evaluating functions associated to divisors on the projective line, one can see how to define new codes based on other divisors or on other algebraic curves. For instance, using modular curves over finite fields, Tsfasman, Vladut, and Zink showed that one can define a sequence of codes with asymptotically better parameters than any previously known codes.

This book is based on a series of lectures the author gave as part of the IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute (Utah) program on arithmetic algebraic geometry. Here, the reader is introduced to the exciting field of algebraic geometric coding theory. Presenting the material in the same conversational tone of the lectures, the author covers linear codes, including cyclic codes, and both bounds and asymptotic bounds on the parameters of codes. Algebraic geometry is introduced, with particular attention given to projective curves, rational functions and divisors. The construction of algebraic geometric codes is given, and the Tsfasman-Vladut-Zink result mentioned above is discussed.

5 out of 5 stars Concise introduction to algebraic geometric codes.......2004-11-06

The book gives an overview of algebraic coding theory. The first chapter introduces error correcting codes, the Hamming distance, Reed-Solomon codes, and concludes with a brief exposition of cyclic codes. The second chapter discusses some upper bounds on the minimum distance of a code such as the Singleton and Plotkin bounds.

The second theme of this book are algebraic curves. Chapter 3 contains the basic definitions and some examples of algebraic curves. The concept of a nonsingular curve is explained in Chapter 4. This chapter also contains a half page explanation of the genus of a curve. The Riemann-Roch theorem is finally covered in Chapter 5.

The two themes come together in Chapters 6 and 7. These chapters discuss the basic principles of algebraic geometry codes.

This little book gives the reader a first taste of an intriguing field. The most surprising part is how much is covered in so few pages [the main text without appendices has 44 pages]. The explanations are always accessible for undergraduate students of mathematics, computer science, or electrical engineering. The prerequisites are some knowledge of abstract algebra, but most material is reviewed in the appendices.

It is a lovely little book that is written in a lively style. The book nicely complements the typical college courses on coding theory. If you want to get an idea what algebraic geometric codes are and you want a quick answer, then this is the book for you.

                              Book Description

This book provides a self-contained introduction to the theory of error-correcting codes and related topics in number theory, Algebraic Geometry and the theory of Sphere Packings. The material is presented in an easily understandable form.
This book is devoted to geometric Goppa codes; the recently discovered areas which combines Coding Theory, Algebraic Geometry, Number Theory, and Theory of Sphere Packings. It has an interdisciplinary nature and demonstrates the close interconnection of Coding Theory with various classical areas of mathematics. There are four main themes in the book. The first is a brief exposition of the basic concepts and facts of error-correcting code theory. The second is a complete presentation of the theory of algebraic curves; especially the curves defined over finite fields. The third is a detailed description of the theory of elliptic and modular codes, and their reductions modulo a prime number. The fourth is a construction of geometric Gappa codes producing rather long linear codes with very good parameters coming from algebraic curves, and with a lot of rational points.
The aim of the book is to present these themes in a simple, easily understandable manner, and explain their close interconnection. At the same time the book introduces the reader to topics which are at the forefront of current research.
