This volume is the proceedings of the first CPE conference in the new millennium and the thirteenth in a well-established series of conferences on Chemistry for the Protection of the Environment, first established in 1976. With support of the U.S. EPA, the series of conferences provides an opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange of ideas among international specialists, from diverse fields and backgrounds, on the chemical aspects of environmental protection. Over the years, the CPE conferences have gathered participants from more and more countries, and the scope of interests have been broadened. Held in Hilo, Hawaii, this was the first of these international conferences to take place in the United States. The Organizing Committee attracted to the conference a wide range of talented scientists and engineers who have useful ideas to contribute on how to clean our environment.

Any pollution control or pollution cure action today must take into consideration not only one element of the environment, like water, air or soil but also proper environmental handling and related problems. In all cases, chemical processes play a highly significant role. In recent years there has been a shift from wastewater technologies and pollutant monitoring problems to environment management and solid wastes issues. This book provides a forum for chemical scientists and engineers who are dedicated to the worthy mission of making a cleaner, healthier world for everyone.

The central goals of Chemistry for the Protection of the Environment are to improve technology transfer and scientific dialogue, thereby leading to better comprehension of and solution to a broad spectrum of environmentally related problems.

            Book Description

Classical numerical methods such as Boundary Element Methods (BEM) have now evolved to a mature state and can provide accurate and reliable predictions in such areas as stress analysis, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. This maturity, coupled with increasing computer power, means that engineers are now able to tackle simulations of complex character. In particular, the interaction and coupling of different fields and their integration in the overall system analysis and design process can be attempted.

This book features a collection of chapters contributed by researchers currently involved in addressing a range of applications of the BEM to coupled field problems. It also illustrates the trend of employing a variety of solvers, each best suited to the task at hand, in order to tackle coupled multi-phenomena problems encountered in engineering analysis and design.

              Book Description

This volume is a collection of papers presented at the IABEM International Symposium on Boundary Integral Methods for Nonlinear Problems, held at Pontignano (Siena, Italy) on May 28-June 3, 1995 and co-sponsored by IUTAM.
The symposium was organized with the intention of creating an opportunity for mathematicians and engineers working on nonlinear problems to communicate with each other and exchange experiences in the use of boundary integral methods.
The spirit of the symposium is clearly reflected in the papers collected in the volume. Some mathematical issues of boundary integral methods for the solution of nonlinear problems are examined in depth. In addition, several applications to fluid and solid mechanics and heat transfer problems are presented.
Within the vast literature on boundary integral methods, this volume is probably the first dedicated specifically to nonlinear aspects. It gives the reader a wide overview of the broad class of applications where boundary integral methods represent a very appealing tool for the analysis of nonlinear problems.

                Book Description

One of the major achievements in fluid mechanics in the last quarter of the twentieth century has been the development of an asymptotic description of perturbations to boundary layers known generally as 'triple deck theory'. These developments have had a major impact on our understanding of laminar fluid flow, particularly laminar separation. It is also true that the theory rests on three quarters of a century of development of boundary layer theory which involves analysis, experimentation and computation. All these parts go together, and to understand the triple deck it is necessary to understand which problems the triple deck resolves and which computational techniques have been applied. This book presents a unified account of the development of laminar boundary layer theory as a historical study together with a description of the application of the ideas of triple deck theory to flow past a plate, to separation from a cylinder and to flow in channels. The book is intended to provide a graduate level teaching resource as well as a mathematically oriented account for a general reader in applied mathematics, engineering, physics or scientific computation.

                  Book Description

During the last two decades the boundary element method has experienced a remarkable evolution. Contemporary concepts and techniques leading to the advancements of capabilities and understanding of the mathematical and computational aspects of the method in mechanics are presented. The special emphasis on theoretical and numerical issues, as well as new formulations and approaches for special and important fields of solid and fluid mechanics are considered. Several important and new mathematical aspects are presented: singularity and hypersingular formulations, regularity, errors and error estimators, adaptive methods, Galerkin formulations, coupling of BEM-FEM and non-deterministic (stochastic and fuzzy) BEM formulations. Novel developments and applications of the boundary element method in various fields of mechanics of solids and fluids are considered: heat conduction, diffusion and radiation, non-linear problems, dynamics and time-depending problems, fracture mechanics, thermoelasticity and poroelasticity, aerodynamics and acoustics, contact problems, biomechanics, optimization and sensitivity analysis problems, ill posed and inverse problems, and identification problems.

                    Book Description

Boundary element methods relate to a wide range of engineering applications, including fluid flow, fracture analysis, geomechanics, elasticity, and heat transfer. Thus, new results in the field hold great importance not only to researchers in mathematics, but to applied mathematicians, physicists, and engineers. A two-day minisymposium Mathematical Aspects of Boundary Element Methods at the IABEM conference in May 1998 brought together top rate researchers from around the world, including Vladimir Maz'ya, to whom the conference was dedicated. Focusing on the mathematical and numerical analysis of boundary integral operators, this volume presents 25 papers contributed to the symposium. Mathematical Aspects of Boundary Element Methods provides up-to-date research results from the point of view of both mathematics and engineering. The authors detail new results, such as on nonsmooth boundaries, and new methods, including domain decomposition and parallelization, preconditioned iterative techniques, multipole expansions, higher order boundary elements, and approximate approximations. Together they illustrate the connections between the modeling of applied problems, the derivation and analysis of corresponding boundary integral equations, and their efficient numerical solutions.

                      Book Description

Wave propagation in poroelastic and viscoelastic solids treated by the Boundary Element method in time domain is the topic of this research book. A novel boundary element formulation has been presented based on the Convolution Quadrature Method. Because in this time-stepping formulation only Laplace domain fundamental solutions are needed this method can be effectively applied to a plenty of problems, e.g., anisotropic or transversely isotropic continua. So, this method combines the advantage of the Laplace domain with the advantage of a time domain calculation. Here, wave propagation phenomenon in viscoelastic as well as poroelastic half spaces are considered. The Rayleigh wave as well as the slow compressional wave in the poroelastic solid is discussed.
